[Bug 574342] Re: GIMP set as default pdf viewer

2019-04-10 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello. The file mimeinfo.list apparently overrides mimeinfo.cache which
seems to be recreated upon installing/upgrading packages.

Creating the following file:

[Default Applications]
application/pdf=okularApplication_pdf.desktop

as mimeinfo.list under ~/.local/share/applications/ or /usr/share/applications/
(as per user or global requirements) helped for me.

Source: https://www.ryananddebi.com/2014/09/29/linux-fixing-pdfs-
opening-in-gimp-in-firefoxzotero/ which refers to
https://wiki.debian.org/MIME

I confirm that this works for me on Kubuntu Bionic LTS with latest
updates.

[Bug 1558331] Re: message "The repository is insufficiently signed by key (weak digest)" is poorly worded

Sorry for the noise due to my previous comment #86. It is unrelated to
this bug and it was because I was not generating the appropriate SHA256
lines in the Release file. Sorry again.

[Bug 1558331] Re: message "The repository is insufficiently signed by key (weak digest)" is poorly worded

2016-06-07 Thread Shriramana Sharma
I have my own local repo and am getting this error for it whenever I try
to do apt-get update. I even recently updated the key I use to sign it
to RSA/RSA 2048/2048 and also add the two lines in ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf:

cert-digest-algo SHA256
digest-algo SHA256

as recommended at http://askubuntu.com/a/776599/170127. However I still
keep getting this error. Please advise as to what I have to do to stop
getting this error.

Confirmed on 4.2-RC1. Same workarounds still work. BTW I also checked on
Fedora 22 which has kernel 4.0.4 (admittedly lesser version but) which
means it's not Ubuntu specific anyhow.

[Bug 1255428] Re: 8086:0116 [Lenovo IdeaPad Z570] LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2015-07-08 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello. I downloaded the latest kernel 4.1.1 for the Trusty LTS that I am
using and even there the behaviour is the same. Again the workarounds I
previously mentioned still work.

Now I'm not an expert but I really don't think this is a kernel bug at
all because if the Xorg conf entry is there then the kernel seems to be
perfectly capable of sending the requisite commands to the LCD firmware
to adjust its brightness upon user hitting the hardware key. I don't
have any pre-Saucy installations to test whether those versions
automatically had the entry, or whether some change in the kernel or
Xorg or elsewhere started requiring the existence of this conf file in
order for the desired behaviour to be restored. So possibly you should
be investigating why the Xorg conf file is no longer put in there by
default by the installer or such...

[Bug 1406233] [NEW] kdev-python package should be made to align with upstream's kdevelop-python

2014-12-29 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

Upstream has recently added a package kdevelop-python containing the Py
3 plugin for KDevelop. When Kubuntu inherits this, we see two packages
kdev-python for Py 2 and kdevelop-python for Py 3. Obviously, the naming
situation is less than optimal. I have submitted an upstream bug asking
for the kdevelop-python package to be renamed to kdevelop-python3 since
it applies to Py 3 only. See https://bugs.debian.org/774141

Kubuntu should also align with upstream in the sense that the kdev-
python should be renamed kdevelop-python once upstream moves the Py 3
plugin to kdevelop-python3. In fact, it would seem that kdev-python i.e.
the Py 2 plugin need not be packaged separately downstream at all, and
should instead be done upstream.

[Bug 1316384] Re: After upgrade from Lubuntu 13.10 to 14.04, color customization is ignored

2014-09-15 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Apparently it's one of those things that GCC permits whereas Clang does
not: I had my default compiler set to Clang, and setting it back to GCC
allowed the compilation to proceed without problems.

I thus backported the 0.4.9.2+git20140410-0ubuntu2 version from Utopic
to Trusty and now my new color settings are preserved, but I have to
ensure that the iGtk line mentioned above is removed. (It is not
regenerated at next login/reboot).

Upstream Debian reports this fixed with further upstream (core gzip)
version 1.6 -- thankfully the gzip developers decided to include this
directly: http://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=7623.

And indeed in Trusty (actually since Saucy, but I hadn't noticed it) I
have this option to keep me happy! :-)

$ cat EOF  foo
 Test
 EOF
$ echo $( foo)
Test
$ echo $( fo[TAB]o^C
$ echo $(cat fo[TAB]o^C

Simply put, once I start a command substitution with $( I am not able to
use the [TAB] completion in Trusty any longer while this was working
file in Saucy. I hope this can be fixed soon since it really hampers use
of the command-line. Thanks!

[Bug 1255428] Re: 8086:0116 [Lenovo IdeaPad Z570] LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2014-02-16 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello Christopher. I did the update just now and nothing has changed.
Here's the output you asked for:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
45CN38WW
10/21/2011

BTW as I already mentioned, I wonder if you are looking for the problem
in the wrong place. I filed this bug against the kernel since I did not
know where exactly else to file it and the hardware hotkey is not
working.

But as I said, if I manually adjust the contents of
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness the actual display
brightness does change.

The problem is only that I am not able to change the brightness via the
keyboard hotkey as well as the power applet.

[Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2014-02-07 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello Christopher. Sorry for the delay. I am having problems downloading
the daily images but I trusted with Alpha 2, and the bug persists there.

And I did not test the mainline kernels since as noted earlier, even
with the Saucy kernel, if we directly write to
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness then the brightness does
change, so even the default Saucy kernel is clearly capable of telling
the hardware to change its brightness.

The problem lies probably in that the GUI as in the power management
applet popup and the keyboard hook which should handle the pressing of
the physical brightness keys on keyboard are somehow not able to modify
the /sys/class/backlight/* file or so.

With the existing setup, I have having to sudo to modify the
/sys/class/* file, so perhaps the process running the GUI popup or the
keyboard hook does not have the relevant permissions to change the
/sys/class/* file.

[Bug 1255428] [NEW] LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Saucy, on my Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 with Intel HD
Graphics 3000, it is no longer possible to control the LCD brightness
using the hardware brightness control keys. Likewise for the KDE power
management settings or the battery icon on my Kubuntu Plasma tray. (I
don't use GNOME/Unity.) Until Raring I did not have this problem.

There is a workaround available from
http://askubuntu.com/questions/362894/changing-the-brightness-stopped-
working-in-13-10-saucy-salamander i.e. doing the following command on a
terminal:

echo 150 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

where 150 is on the scale of 0 to whatever is given within
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness.

Based on this I wrote a GUI which however needs to be run using
sudo/kdesudo/gksudo. I have attached it.

Bug #1241745 also relates to the same problem on Saucy but apparently
relates to an NVidia driver and I was asked to track this as a separate

[Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Shriramana Sharma
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected saucy

** Description changed:

After upgrading to Saucy, on my Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 with Intel HD
Graphics 3000, it is no longer possible to control the LCD brightness
using the hardware brightness control keys. Likewise for the KDE power
management settings or the battery icon on my Kubuntu Plasma tray. (I
don't use GNOME/Unity.) Until Raring I did not have this problem.

There is a workaround available from
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/362894/changing-the-brightness-stopped-
working-in-13-10-saucy-salamander i.e. doing the following command on a
  terminal:

  echo 150 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

where 150 is on the scale of 0 to whatever is given within
  /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness.

Based on this I wrote a GUI which however needs to be run using
  sudo/kdesudo/gksudo. I have attached it.

- Bug #1241745 also relates to the same problem on Saucy but apparently
- relates to an NVidia driver and I was asked to track this as a separate

[Bug 1241745] Re: [regression] Changing the screen brightness does not work anymore in 319.xx

2013-11-26 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Sorry for the extra post, but people using Intel might find this
workaround useful:

$ sudo -i
$ echo 150  /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Source: http://askubuntu.com/a/363806/170127

The maximum value is available in
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness

2013-11-26 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Same problem with laptop as discont -- IdeaPad Z570. The graphics system
is Intel HD Graphics 3000, not NVidia. Should the bug really be filed
against the nvidia package?

Too bad that there is no ETA for this fix...

[Bug 1246415] [NEW] ibus should depend on gir1.2-gtk-2.0

2013-10-30 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu Saucy and I have installed ibus with a few input
methods. However, I was unable to run ibus-setup either from the tray
icon or a terminal.

While trying to run ibus-setup from the terminal I was getting the
error:

$ ibus-setup
ERROR:root:Could not find any typelib for Gtk
Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py, line 29, in module
from gi.repository import Gtk
ImportError: cannot import name Gtk

By googling I got the link http://askubuntu.com/questions/48663
/software-sources-requires-gtk-2-and-wont-run-on-11-04 which is somewhat
related and based on a suggestion in that page I did

$ sudo apt-get install gir1.2-gtk-2.0

after which I have tried ibus-setup to get the ibus-setup window but
with a warning:

$ ibus-setup
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/overrides/Gtk.py:49: RuntimeWarning: You
have imported the Gtk 2.0 module. Because Gtk 2.0 was not designed for use
with introspection some of the interfaces and API will fail. As such this is
not supported by the pygobject development team and we encourage you to port
your app to Gtk 3 or greater. PyGTK is the recomended python module to use with
Gtk 2.0
  warnings.warn(warn_msg, RuntimeWarning)

Since it is not possible to use ibus without enabling any of the input
methods using the setup window, this should be considered a high
priority bug for ibus.

Please fix this. Thank you.

[Bug 1191673] [NEW] dvipng crashes even for simple input

2013-06-17 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu Raring, with versions as below:
texlive-base: 2012.20120611-5
dvipng: 1.14-1build1

I have this simple document foo.tex:

\documentclass[16pt]{article}
\usepackage{amsmath,amssymb}
\usepackage{breqn}
\pagestyle{empty}
\begin{document}
$ \infty $
\end{document}

I do latex foo.tex and I get the .dvi files with no problems. Then I do:

dvipng -T tight -D 150 -bg Transparent -fg Blue -O 0cm,0cm foo.png
foo.dvi

I get this:

This is dvipng 1.14 Copyright 2002-2010 Jan-Ake Larsson
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

gdb says there are no debugging symbols so I couldn't try that.

Due to this dvipng problem I am not able to use SymPyPrt
(https://github.com/scios/IPyXt) on IPython2/3:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sympy/WzwS3578TuU/sZAYDcFQ8cIJ

I did not have a problem with using SymPyPrt on Kubuntu Precise of last
year, and I thought dvipng has practically not changed in Raring since
Precise:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=dvipngsearchon=namessuite=allsection=all
except for a new build. The changelog
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/d/dvipng/dvipng_1.14-1build1/changelog
says the new build is for some kpathsea transition.

The upstream author reports that this works in Linux Mint and thinks it
could be some kpathsea problem:
http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/dvipng/2013-06/msg1.html.
Surely in Kubuntu Precise there was no problem.

I'm not sure about Quantal since I never used it (directly came
Precise-Raring). However I would imagine the same problem exists there
because the dvipng version is the same.

Please fix this, thank you!

[Bug 1191673] Re: dvipng crashes even for simple input

2013-06-17 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Turns out that the bug is partially topstream and partially in the
Debian packaging. See
http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/dvipng/2013-06/threads.html
especially
http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/dvipng/2013-06/msg4.html.

The program as it stands depends on latex-xcolor, however the author
intends to later on make it only a recommends and not a dependency.
Until such time, it should be added as depends.

I have hence changed the bug title and linked to the upstream Debian bug
I reported.

Thanks.

[Bug 1186328] [NEW] llvm-dev should depend on binutils-gold

2013-05-31 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

I am using Kubuntu Raring 64-bit. I have recently started using Clang
for my C/C++ compilation work.

-O4 option in Clang means link-time optimization via LLVM, which
requires LLVMgold.so, which obviously requires gold. However, currently
llvm-dev which provides LLVMgold.so doesn't depend on binutils-gold.

Please observe the following session transcript:

[samjnaa:~/bn/c/llvmgold-test] cat increment.c
int increment ( int a ) { return a + 1 ; }

[samjnaa:~/bn/c/llvmgold-test] clang -O4 -c increment.c -fPIC -Wall

directory

[samjnaa:~/bn/c/llvmgold-test] sudo apt-get install binutils-gold

The following NEW packages will be installed:

[samjnaa:~/bn/c/llvmgold-test] clang -O4 -shared -o increment.so -fPIC

[samjnaa:~/bn/c/llvmgold-test]

So evidently llvm-dev requires binutils-gold to be there for it to be
usable. Therefore please make it so that llvm-dev depends on binutils-
gold.

Two other points:

1. I'm not very clear about why LLVMgold.so is placed in llvm-dev
instead of something like llvm-gold-plugin -- but I'll leave the
decision to the maintainers.

2. This is probably an upstream Debian bug but since I don't use that
distro I am reporting it here. Please take it upstream if appropriate.

Hi -- it's not clear to me what you mean. Where would the gold linker
go? Would it go into the binutils package itself? Would we have to
install llvm-dev to use clang -O4 or not?

[Bug 1184658] [NEW] python3-sphinx is not usable on Raring

2013-05-27 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

Please refer to my thread at the upstream mailing list:
https://groups.google.com/d/topic/sphinx-dev/FHgjgSYPYaU/discussion. It
is not possible to use python3-sphinx on Raring for the simple reason
that in Raring python3-sphinx is at v1.1.3 but python3 is at v3.3.1 and
apparently one requires python3-sphinx v1.2 to use sphinx on python3 =
3.3: see https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sphinx-dev/FHgjgSYPYaU/LffSg_-
qCVEJ

It doesn't seem as if this can be fixed on raring unless raring-updates
can get python3-sphinx. I submit this bug to keep track of this.

[Bug 1155216] Re: Unable to umount isodevice

2013-04-26 Thread Shriramana Sharma
I tried installing Kubuntu Raring Beta 2 and Raring final using ISO
loopback, but it gave this error saying /isodevice could not
unmounted, and while it lets me select the timezone, keyboard layout
etc, the installation doesn't really seem to progress because the
progress bar reads Detecting filesystems for a long time. I suppose if
installation is progressing it should say unpacking this/that etc.

I am now going to try installing using my USB drive -- too bad I
couldn't use the HD-install method which I have been using for three
years now.

[Bug 1033765] [NEW] fontforge should be updated to 20120731 version

2012-08-06 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

Hello. There has been a fontforge 20120731 release:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=29620722
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=29625605

Please update the Ubuntu fontforge package to this latest version. As
per the second message, the b-version is the one to be used as the first
version does not build on 64-bit systems.

BTW can we just remove the 0.0. from the versioning and have the
release date as the version like it is seen upstream?

Thank you.

P.S.: I have reported this upstream but have filed it here anyway for
the record. Have linked to the upstream bug too.

2012-05-05 Thread Shriramana Sharma
I'm sorry I should have explained that. See bug #994664, but curiously
on my father's system with BCM4312, the output of rfkill list all is
like the output reported here and not the one reported there. But then
again, bug #990222 shows this bug with BCM4313 too, so this is really a
generic Broadcom-related bug. I'm marking that as a dup of this one too.

[Bug 903422] Re: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices

2012-05-01 Thread Shriramana Sharma
I have a Sony Xperia Neo V which I recently upgraded to ICS and I have
upgraded my Kubuntu installation to Precise. If it is true that the
problem has been fixed by the latest release uploaded to Precise as
per comment #24 please tell me from a vanilla installation what packages
should I install to enable Precise to read my SD card via MTP protocol.
The curious thing is that Ubuntu has always read my MP3 player (also on
MTP) without my needed to install any specific packages, so I wonder why
I have to install now only?

[Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Navid, please cease and desist from making unhelpful comments. I myself
would like to see this bug fixed soon, and I also do not have enough
C-knowledge to contribute a patch, and I do occasionally post hello can
anybody please fix this bug kind of comments to bug reports, but at
least I try to stay polite and *request* something of the developers who
obviously have a particular skill which I don't. It is my experience
that more often than not, developers are quite polite and at least
explain why the bug can't be fixed soon or something like that.

Now my polite request: can any of the kind developers fix this bug
please? I'm sure with your skills it would be a simple job if someone
just allocated a small amount of time to it?

After upgrading my Kubuntu system to Oneiric, the ibus stopped working
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/854333) so I'm falling back to
XIM which IMHO is much cleaner even if not context-sensitive. So I would
really like to see this soon. Thanks! :)

[Bug 780040] Re: wifi softblocked atheros ar9285 cannot unblock ideapad z570

2011-09-13 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello and thanks for this suggestion, but two questions on your post at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/836865/comments/13:

1. You say to push the rfkill hotkey several times -- is the rfkill
hotkey the same as the Fn+ sequence on my laptop that is supposed to
turn wireless on and off?

2. You say to try to find out which register tells us the *real* rfkill
status -- what is a register in this case?

[Bug 780040] Re: wifi softblocked atheros ar9285 cannot unblock ideapad z570

2011-07-27 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Now here's something weird. In comment #31 I had reported that by
running the 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu repo kernel I had no problems.

Actually it's like this. Once I have booted using the mainline 2.6.37-6
kernel, *then* even if boot using the 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu kernel (but NOT
if I do so using the 2.6.38-8 kernel) the wireless is still working. I
tested this on another installation of Natty where directly upgrading to
the 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu kernel doesn't solve the problem without using the
2.6.37-6 mainline kernel.

Crazy...

Hello -- just yesterday I have done the apport-collect stuff. At that
time you had asked us to do it and then change the status to new which
I did. Now your script again automatically marked it incomplete and
asks us once more to do apport-collect and then change the status to
confirmed. Please clarify whether you really want us to run apport-
collect once more. I have now changed the status to confirmed though.

[Bug 812210] [NEW] KDE file picker called by GTK applications throws false Overwrite warning

2011-07-18 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Public bug reported:

I am using Kubuntu Natty. My LibreOffice automatically comes with KDE
integration in the form of the libreoffice-kde package which provides a
KDE file picker. I have also installed firefox-kde-support to allow my
manually installed Firefox to use the KDE file picker. Both these GTK
applications when integrated with KDE show this error:

1. Create a temporary directory just for testing: mkdir /tmp/foo
2. Open a webpage in KDE or a file in LibreOffice.
3. Open the Save As dialog -- you should get the KDE file picker.
4. In the Name box enter /tmp/foo and press Enter.

Actual Result:
It throws a warning asking whether I want to overwrite /tmp/foo. This warning
is out of place because /tmp/foo is a directory and my typing it into the
address field and pressing Enter is clearly telling the dialog box to open that
directory in the folder pane. This is how the Save As box of *all other KDE
applications* handles it.

Expected Result:
Other KDE applications (I tested Kate and Okteta) do NOT throw such a warning
as they detect /tmp/foo is a directory and simply open it in the directory pane.

I am filing this bug against the source packages kmozillahelper and
libreoffice.

[Bug 780040] Re: wifi softblocked atheros ar9285 cannot unblock ideapad z570

2011-07-18 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Hello people. Now have added requested information. Further I have now
upgraded my kernel to latest 2.6.38-10 and retested the bug by removing
the extra lines I added to rc.local.

Apparently the unloading of the wrongfully loaded acer_wmi module is
still required (whether on the terminal or via rc.local) but does fix
the bug on the new kernel so it is not necessary to go to the mainline
2.6.37-x kernel.

However, obviously the acer_wmi module should not be loaded on a Lenovo
IdeaPad laptop so the bug still does exist.

Observe:

[samjnaa:~] uname -r
2.6.38-10-generic
[samjnaa:~] rfkill list all
0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no

Now I throw the wireless switch to off then:
