I don't understand why such a silly limitation is hard coreded into a utility that other developers are supposed to use. Is there a better place we can appeal this decision? Timeouts ought to be controlled by apps and if apps abuse them, it should be brought up with the app developer. Is notification spam really such a problem that this is necessary? Also, I noticed this error occurs even when autologin is enabled. The artifacts will remain at the top of the desktop, and the display crashes to the lightdm login screen if you press enter. I tried this with alpha two a few days ago. When I activated the secondary monitor, x would not start. This time the bulletproof x did start though. There should at the very least be a warning with a yes/no prompt and then have the user type in the root password one more time to finalize it. This at least prevents anything rash from happening. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg The new xorg does not properly detect and configure my second monitor. I am using a Dell laptop and a NEC lcd monitor. When I access Screens and Graphics program, it detects only one generic monitor with a resolution of 640X480. I found this strange because my laptop monitor was running and xrandr said it was properly set to 1280X800. Update to the problem. This is a copy of my response on the devel discuss mailing list where I was also asking about this. Well I got it [Screens and Graphics] to detect both monitors for a little bit. At first all it would show was my secondary monitor (which was not activated) when I pressed detect. After I set the correct resolution and restarted the x server, It showed a second monitor which I presumed to be my laptop's monitor. After I set that resolution, I tried to reset the x server again and got the following error: /etc/gdm/failsavexserver: line47 [: too many arguments warning: could not retrieve EDID because set-edid is not installed (1): error: this program does not know how to configure the 10 shared/default-x-server doesnt exist.
