[Bug 1870514] Re: update containerd:amd64 1.3.3-0 stops docker daemon

2020-12-01 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
We have seen this on a bionic (18.04) and xenial (16.04) hosts. Does
this definitely not impact focal as well?

(For anyone who comes across this one of the upstream issues
(https://github.com/docker/docker-credential-

away if `pass` package is also installed and this seemed to make the

I think this is documented as not working when you are using systemd in
the file itself:

$ cat /etc/default/docker
$ head -8 /etc/default/docker

#
# THIS FILE DOES NOT APPLY TO SYSTEMD

[Bug 1836022] Re: Cannot start containers after docker.io update

2019-07-10 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Further information:
Doing things like docker stop will hang and won't actually stop the running
container (but won't spit out an error message or exit with a non-zero return
code). docker kill fails to change the state of the system in a similar way.

In my case restarting the docker daemon just left all the old containers
running we were forced to reboot the machine in order to recover.

I agree with @anatoly.borodin - in fact the commit
https://github.com/docker/docker-credential-

https://github.com/docker/docker-credential-

same fix. It's a crying shame that @aidanh010 filed this with a link to
a fix last year but then it was somehow forgotten about...

[Bug 1813003] [NEW] Invalid free while running docker build

2019-01-23 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem:
Running docker build generates a warning that an invalid free was performed.

Steps to reproduce:

Expected results:
Docker container to be built without errors

Actual results:
An error is produced while the container is being built:

like a ready candidate for backporting (and given how widespread this issue is
this is the course of action I would recommend).

[Bug 1738427] [NEW] Segfault if crontab is owned by a user who cannot be found?

2017-12-15 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem
It appears that cron will go on to crash if it finds a crontab owned by uid who
does not map to a valid user.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a crontab with an Active Directory user set up via SSSD?
2. Switch AD domains so user's uid is entirely different?
3. Wait for cron to try and run the old user's crontab?

Expected result:
Error in the journal?

Actual result:
Error in the log file and cron segfault?

How reproducible is the issue?
It has happened twice so far before the crontab was removed.

I see this issue too. It is easy to get with a 4.4 kernel if you have an
SSD hooked up to the Windows host and then you connect the SSD to the
Hyper-V VM via the SCSI controller in passthrough mode. Error messages
will look like this:

[Bug 1713984] Re: started raise network interfaces - times out

Wild guess: this might be because you have only one network interface
that is set to use DHCP but the DHCP server is set not to return any
routers. See https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/3752 for this
type of scenario.

[Bug 1717143] [NEW] glusterfs-common depends on architecture specific version of psmisc

2017-09-13 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem:
While trying to install the 32 bit version of glusterfs-common on a 64 bit
system (for testing purposes) on Ubuntu 14.04 on Travis (which only provides 64
bit environments) I ran into the following:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

glusterfs-common:i386 : Depends: psmisc:i386 but it is not going to
be installed

I only need glusterfs-common for the includes and the libraries but I
don't see an easy way out of the above quandary short of a full
chroot/docker etc unfortunately. My only thought was: should the psmisc
dependency be of an any/all type?

I contacted Patrick Matthäi who was listed as the Debian maintainer
about this and he recommended that I contact the Ubuntu team.

** Affects: glusterfs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1703440] Re: xenial fio 2.2.10 randwrite: "random" data NOT random, highly compressible -> highly misleading output

2017-08-15 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
@fmyhr:

After grovelling through the fio commits I've come across
https://github.com/axboe/fio/commit/1e7f82e20c088e3f564ad24e37bb873b7ac37d3a
which says old versions of fio had problems reaching compressability
targets with large (above 64k) blocksizes which matches this launchpad
bug's scenario where the block size is 512k. The said commit has a fix
and is in fio 2.2.12 and later. Zesty has 2.16-1 so this (and many other
issues) should be fixed from that Ubuntu release onwards. I can't
comment on whether someone will do a backport to Xenial but at least fio
is an easy compile...

[Bug 1703440] Re: xenial fio 2.2.10 randwrite: "random" data NOT random, highly compressible -> highly misleading output

2017-08-14 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Something else to bear in mind is that because you aren't using direct=1
(see http://fio.readthedocs.io/en/latest/fio_doc.html#cmdoption-arg-
direct ) there's nothing (other than size) stopping your I/O being
entirely cached in RAM thus creating unrealistically fast speeds. Worse
still, there's a good chance that ZFS doesn't support O_DIRECT so you
won't be able to use direct=1 even if you wanted to. To try and combat
this you will have to write/read an area at least twice the size of your
RAM (2 GBytes is likely too small). I know you get fast SSDs but doesn't
3GByte/s seem unusually high? :-) The usual telltale sign that your I/O
is being cached in RAM is that the minimum latency is 0ms - if you ever
see that you will know you're suffering/benefiting from OS caching.

You also need to look at the contents of a file after fio does randwrite
rather than its preallocation. It's worth pointing out your blocksize is
giant at 512k and you went for a slightly poorer but computationally
cheaper random number generator and turned off hitting every block once.

I have to admit I'm baffled as to why a later fio would perform
differently but as you suggest perhaps it's down to a bug that has been
fixed.

Lim:

The output you included says otherwise:
testlog: (g=0): rw=read, bs=4K-4K/4K-4K/4K-4K, ioengine=sync, iodepth=1
fio-2.1.3

I guess the main points are: Can this still be reproduced and if so can
what were the steps? Further, can it still be reproduced with stock fio
on Ubuntu 16.04 or later or with the latest handbuilt fio (2.99 at the
time of writing) on Ubuntu 14.04?

Without the above I don't think this can progress usefully...

[Bug 1605209] Re: Missing libtalloc2 version dependency

2016-10-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Closer inspection shows that the problem is the *version* of libtalloc2
installed - the samba packages already have a dependency on libtalloc2 itself
but only require 2.0.4~git20101213 or newer. The problem occurred because the
version of libtalloc wasn't upgraded but Samba seemingly requires it. The
currently installed version is:
libtalloc2 2.1.0-1

Here is what it could have been upgraded to:
libtalloc2 2.1.5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1

so it looks like the ABI changed. As such, the required libtalloc2
version should be updated on packages linking against libtalloc 2.1.5...

[Bug 1611945] Re: /dev/disk/by-path not properly populated for (e)SATA port multiplier disks

2016-08-11 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
A quick search digs up that the path is created by this:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/09541e49ebd17b41482e447dd8194942f39788c0/src/udev/udev-builtin-path_id.c#L349
. This code in that region was added in
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/ba86822db70d9ffd02ad78cd02b237ff8c569c7a
but doesn't account for the fact that there may be multiple targets (each
serving up a different ATA port 1)... Prior to that it doesn't look there was
anything to build ATA paths at all? Additionally if my analysis is correct then
this affects HEAD systemd-udev too.

I guess it would be good to know what the paths looked like back in
12.04 (perhaps they were SCSI based?) and whether you get any paths of
that style on a system like 14.04 or 16.04.

I guess it would also be good to have the same output for different disk

Just a quick note: using
sudo -s
or
su -
before using service will work around the issue.

[Bug 1605290] [NEW] Please add --system to initctl calls from service

2016-07-21 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem:
If the user is using the service command they are almost certainly trying to
control system daemons but can wind up looking at only user session daemons.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install KUbuntu 14.04.
2. Graphically log in as a regular user.
3. Run
service ufw status

Expected result:
To be told whether the ufw service is running.

Actual result:
status: Unknown job: ufw

How reproducible is this problem:
It happens every time.

Additional information:
The issue arises because UPSTART_SESSION is set which makes initctl think it
should use a user session. If UPSTART_SESSION is cleared away (which happens
when using sudo) then this problem isn't encountered when using the service
command. However, if the user just uses su then the UPSTART_SESSION can be
inherited and even though the user is root they can't find the services they
are expecting. One way round this would be to make the service command always
use the system session because it's highly unlikely someone is using it to
access user sessions.

This is related to bug #1318679 and there are reports of this problem
scattered over the place (see bug #1367214 ,
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/30568905/ubuntu-when-upstart-service-
is-run-with-user-root-it-returns-unknown-job ,
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26137834/starting-docker-as-daemon-
on-ubuntu , http://serverfault.com/questions/282433/status-unknown-job-
smbd , http://unix.stackexchange.com/q/120050 ...). I personally saw it
when trying to install samba after using su to become root.

Version information:
Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
sysvinit-utils 2.88dsf-41ubuntu6.3

** Affects: sysvinit (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1605209] [NEW] Missing libtalloc2 dependency

2016-07-21 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem:
Samba crashes if libtalloc2 is not installed when a share is accessed by a
non-Linux system.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install KUbuntu 14.04.
2. Get a root terminal up and type
apt-get update
apt-get install samba
3. Add the following to end of /etc/samba/smb.conf :
[tmp]
   path = /tmp
   browseable = yes
   read only = no
   guest ok = yes
4. Run
service smbd reload
5. Connect to the share using something other than Linux (e.g. Windows 7
Explorer, Windows 2012 Explorer, OS X 10.9.5 Finder).

Expected result:
Contents of /tmp to be displayed.

Actual result:
The client hangs because the samba server has core dumped.

How reproducible is the issue:
It is reproducible every time.

Additional information:
Connecting to the share using Linux (e.g. using smbclient or Nautilus on
another system) always works without issue.

Looking in /var/log/samba/cores shows are core with the following backtrace:

between X starting and the intel i915 graphics kernel module being

[Bug 1250875] Re: Lightdm sometimes fails to auto login

2016-04-24 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I've just seen this on Ubuntu 16.04 on an EeePC and in one start up
configuration it always happens and autologin always fails.

It seems to be highly dependent on what else is happening as lightdm is
starting. When the problem occurs looking at the lightdm log shows that
it is trying to log using a normal PAM lightdm session rather than an
autologin PAM session. This leads to failure because the account being
authenticated has a password and no password is being passed to PAM and
the user is intentionally absent from the nopasswdlogin group.

Attaching /etc/lightdm/lilghtdm.conf, /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log and
PAM's /var/log/auth.log .

Changing component. I'm also seeing this on 16.04 trying to use a
WF-3520 printer - it learns about the epson-inkjet-printer-201212w deb
from Epson but the deb can't be installed because xenial no longer has
an lsb package:

[Bug 745608]

2014-02-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Screenshots and logs for linux.testing.mara...@gmail.com are on a system running
Kernel 3.11.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu
xorg-intel 2:2.99.904-0ubuntu2
SNA is on: intel(0): SNA initialized with Eaglelake (gen4.5) backend
Chipset is a Q45/Q43.

linux.testing.marantz:
I've add you to the CC list of this bug report so you will see a reply. It is a
good practice to do this otherwise you will miss followups...

It is unlikely that the bug you are seeing is the one filed here as your
chipset is not an i915 series and you are using SNA on a recent
kernel+xorg. I would strongly urge you to open new bug, attach one of
your screenshots, your xorg and dmesg logs and then report the versions
of your kernel, xorg and xorg intel along with steps on how to reproduce
the issue in a comment.

[Bug 403303] Re: power manager reports 1% battery even though it is full on Asus Eee PC netbook

2014-01-04 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Rob Smith:
This is an old (and resolved) issue - generally speaking issues that have been
fixed and haven't seen activity for years won't see helpful/friendly followups
when you post to them...

It has been explained that this is an Asus based problem

Pretty much. Whoever wrote the BIOS in the EeePC 701/900 followed the
non-rechargeable battery part of the ACPI spec even though the battery
is rechargeable (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15979#c4 ).
This is bad in all sorts of ways...

Why can't Debian/Ubuntu see the battery correctly

They can if you use a kernel with a workaround in it (2.6.35 -stable or
later see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15979#c50 ) - i.e.
this issue will appear fixed to you in Ubuntu 10.10 and later. If you
know how to compile your own kernels you can fix this on Ubuntu 10.04
(or earlier) by installing a 2.6.35 or later -stable kernel or
backporting the patch but don't even attempt to do this if you don't
know what you're doing! Since Ubuntu 10.04 is not supported on desktops
anymore moving to a later Ubuntu (or another recent distro) is by far
the best option.

but Xandros Linux (and Windows XP) can

I believe Xandros's GUI battery program had been hardcoded to understand
the faulty information and correct for it but it's been years since I
last had Xandros around to boot it. For Windows XP I don't know how the
battery is read internally - perhaps the way its ACPI battery reading
was written happened to cope with this particular type of bad battery
information (and if BIOS testing only happened against Windows then no
one would know it was being done wrong until it was too late).

[Bug 1255073] Re: dpkg --foreign-architecture does not work

2013-11-28 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Nik.Th:
Closing this invalid is not the right approach. I'm not (necessarily) asking
for --add-architecture - I'm asking for what is documented to work. If
--foreign-architecture is not going to be implemented it should be removed from
the man page. Implementing it or updating the man page are both valid
approaches.

[Bug 1255073] [NEW] dpkg --foreign-architecture does not work

2013-11-26 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug reported:

Description of the problem:
Trying to use dpkg --foreign-architecture results in an error message.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Run
sudo dpkg --foreign-architecture i386

Expected result:
Foreign architecture i386 to be added to dpkg.

Actual result:
The following error message is printed:
# dpkg --foreign-architecture i386
dpkg: error: need an action option

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !
root@ubuntu:~#

How reproducible is the problem?
It is reproducible every time.

Additional information:
Here is what the man page says for --foreign-architecture:
ACTIONS
[...]
   --foreign-architecture architecture
Add architecture to the list of architectures for which
packages can be installed without using --force-architec‐
ture, in addition to the architecture dpkg is built for
  (i.e.: the output of --print-architecture).

So because it is in the ACTIONS section it is itself an action option
(like --print-foreign-architectures).

Version information:
Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
dpkg 1.16.1.2ubuntu

I've tested linux-image-generic:amd64 3.8.0.30.48 running on Windows
2012 and the BUG/backtrace has gone.

Brad:
Your comments may have been a bit overly automated as the tags in this bug
already contained verification-done when you added your comment (so you in turn
set verification-done). Although your comment didn't mention it, I've changed
verification-needed-raring to verification-done-raring so hopefully the right
thing will happen.

[Bug 1180419] Re: Ringtail on Hyper-V causes BUG: scheduling while atomic

2013-06-21 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I'm seeing this too and its highly reproducible (just click Action -
Shutdown in Virtual Machine Connection). It causes the VM to hang and
for its disks to go offline (network connections will fail too). For
those searching the net, my backtrace is attached (for anyone else
wondering how to get such a backtrace set up COM1 to use a named pipe
(e.g. ubuntu) in Hyper-V Manager, connect to the pipe using a program
like Tera Term and add console=ttyS0,115200n8 to grub).

To me this looks like the issue that was fixed by
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/2027361/ which seems to be part of
the patch series mention in https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/1/23/570 . This
patch is not in 3.8.13 stable kernel (
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/log/drivers/hv/hv_util.c?h=linux-3.8.y ). The patch did go
mainstream eventually
(https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/hv/hv_util.c?id=3dd6cb497198a0533a2530b6a345c60c9a29b9bc
in the 3.9 kernel (git describe --contains
3dd6cb497198a0533a2530b6a345c60c9a29b9bc returns v3.9-rc1~124^2~27).

Fedora 18's 3.8.9-200 kernel has the same problem as Ubuntu Raring's
3.8.9.0-19 kernel but Fedora 18's 3.9.6-200 does not have this issue.

[Bug 745608]

2012-04-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I can confirm that the issue is still occurring (and is reproducible
within 30 seconds using the original steps) in the Fedora 17 and Ubuntu
12.04 betas (which are using v2.18 and v2.17 of the intel driver). The
DebugWait option still resolves the problem too. None of the other
options (DebugFlushBatches or DebugFlushCaches true, Tiling false)
resolve the issue.

Using xorg-edgers ( https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa )
and sarvatt's intel-sna branch ( https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive
/intel-sna ) also resolves the issue.

[Bug 429370] Re: Eduroam randomly disconnects

2011-11-15 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I have seen this behaviour in Oneiric on an 802.11 wired network.

On Windows, the network connectivity instructions explicitly tell us to
disable Enable Fast Reconnect. The wpa_supplicant in Oneiric will not
read a configuration file by default added using just -c. Further, it
will not read a configuration file set on the command line using -c
unless an interface is also set using -i. Even after all this was done,
it went on to use fast_reauth anyway because it was a wired interface
and it tried to communicate to the interface using wireless extensions.
In the end the wpa_supplicant DBus service needed to be started with
-ieth0 -Dwired -c pathtoconf and the configuration file specified
fast_reauth=0. This really DID disable fast_reauth, working around
whatever problem this particular network has...

[Bug 66238] Re: rev doesn't expect input in current locale's charset

2011-10-15 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Hi Joseph,

I can say with certainty that this is not going to be an kernel bug -
locale related stuff HAS to be at the library or application level
because the kernel has no awareness of how to reinterpret things
according to the locale.

However, since you have requested upstream kernel testing I'll see what
I can do.

[Bug 745608] Re: [915GM] font corruption on Intel GMA900

2011-09-01 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
(Subscribing dpsenner to this bug)

Dominik:
It's cool when you find a bug report that might help you fix a problem isn't
it? :-)

Speaking as a random person on the Internet (I don't work for Canonical,
Intel etc), it's very unlikely that you can have a bug's priority raised
by asking (although subscribing/marking a bug as also affecting you is
useful as it makes it clear how many people are interested in a given
bug). The general reason is that while the bug may be massively
disruptive for you, there are finite resources to go into fixing
problems. If more people are seeing another issue just as major or more
significant in some manner, then it is likely the resources will be put
into solving that issue.

Of course, I would like to see this particular bug resolved too :). If
this turns out to be your issue (your card's id looks the same as others
that see this issue so chances are high), you can read further
discussion in the upstream bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36326 .

To answer Ferry's question about why the fix works: one of the Intel
developers mentioned that this era of graphics cards have constraints
related to tiling and DebugWait disabled tiling entirely (but another
issue meant that Tiling false did not disable tiling(!)). It was
only in later versions of the X drivers that tiling was actually used
tiling, so that's why users with old Xorgs don't see this issue.

[Bug 820881] Re: [i945] Heavy screen and font corruption on GMA950

2011-08-05 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
tabbernuk:
There is speculation that your issue is tiling related and you would need the
_kernel_ patch from
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=e28f87116503f796aba4fb27d81e2c3d81966174
to resolve this issue (it was included in the 3.0 kernel)... I'm not quite
sure how you can easily test out this patch without touching the rest of your
system though.

[Bug 745608] Re: [915GM] font corruption on Intel GMA900

2011-08-04 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
tabbernuk:

Hmm it sounds like you have different bug to that described here (e.g.
you see corruption in things other than text). I would suggest opening a
separate (new) bug report (and then post a link to the new report here)
because if the bug I see is fixed your issue can remain open if it
continues...

[Bug 745608] Re: [915GM] font corruption on Intel GMA900

2011-08-04 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
tabbernuk:

I recommend filing a new bug report using
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+filebug . While your issue looks similar to this bug report, you
are seeing corruption in things that are not glyphs so your issue is
different to this one...

Please post a link to your new bug report back here though!

Does the workaround described in comment #40 reduce the problem for you? You
may also want to test out the updated package in Bug 803012 ...
