It's good to know (and, frankly, a bit surprising) radeonhd works for
some of you, however understand that it is not one of the drivers we
 actively support at this time.

[Bug 264462] Re: Radeon Driver fails to load on 2 Sep daily [ATI HD3870]

2008-10-03 Thread Stefan Carslöv
I've just tested the Kubuntu 8.10 Beta Live CD (i386) and there is no change.
The monitor goes to sleep when the driver loads and only wakes up if I switch
to vt1. If I switch back to vt7 the monitor goes blank again.
This happens in both normal and safe graphics mode. I checked the Xorg.0.log
and the same driver loads in both modes.

I think this bug should be tagged Critical and be targeted for the final
release. It's a potential show stopper for a lot of people out there who
got a recent ATI card.

The solution would probably be to load the radeonhd for the R6xx/R7xx
cards by default.

[Bug 277361] Re: unable to load ati restricted driver in Ubuntu 8.10

2008-10-03 Thread Stefan Carslöv
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 264462 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264462

This shouldn't be at duplicate of bug #264462. This bug talks about the
restricted driver (eg. fglrx) and #264462 is about the open source radeon
driver.
In Clueless xorg.conf it says 'Driver fglrx ', and not 'Driver ati '

Also the affected package should be xserver-xorg-video-fglrx instead
of xserver-xorg-video-ati

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2008-09-18 Thread Stefan Carslöv
I too got this bug and haven't found a solution yet.

   Dist: Kubuntu 8.04.1 Fully upgraded
Graphics card: PowerColor (ATI) HD3870 SCS3
Tested drivers: fglrx 8.3 through 8.9

Symptoms: When switching user the screen goes black and the system is totally
unresponsive, including the keyboard. Not even caps-lock trigges the caps-lock
light. The only thing that works is the reset button and to hold the
powerbutton until it shuts down. Shutdown or restart works without problem (I
have fixed the problem with atieventsd, see bug 118605).
If i use the vesa or radeonhd drivers everything is ok. But then I got no 3D
acceleration, which I think would be nice...

This bug is really annoying to me, as we are switching users a lot on
this computer. It started when I bought this card. I got a ATI X600
before, and that didn't suffer from this bug at all.

Anything else I could provide to help solving this bug, or at least get
it triaged?

[Bug 264462] Re: Radeon Driver fails to load on 2 Sep daily

2008-09-06 Thread Stefan Carslöv
I'm confirming this bug in Kubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5 Live CD.
I'll see the exact same behaviour and I too got an ATI HD3870.

For your information I have also seen the same on Kubuntu 8.04 when trying the
latest xserver-xorg-video-ati from https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive
(xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.9.0+git20080820.1cf7a549-0ubuntu0tormod~hardy)
The latest RadeonHD-driver (xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd -
1.2.1+git20080816.76272c54-0ubuntu0tormod~hardy) from the same place works
though.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-08-04 Thread Stefan Carslöv
Since my last comment I have bought a new card, a HD3870. With my old
card (X600) everything worked flawless after the changes to
/etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh but now I got a hard-lock (have to power
cycle) when I logout of KDE or try to swap user. Shutdown and restart
works correct though. I have tried Catalyst 8.3 through 8.7 with the
same result. After some extensive search and testing I found that
disabling AIGLX by adding:

Section ServerFlags
Option AIGLX off
EndSection

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf resolves that situation. This is a complete
different bug though, as I can reproduce it with or without atieventsd
running. But this could be a solution to you people who still got
lockups when logging out.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-04-13 Thread Stefan Carslöv
I had the same problem on my up to date Kubuntu 8.04 Beta. The problem
is that /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh can't locate a file. It's got the
wrong path.

In /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh change this line:
   XDM_AUTH_MASK=/var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A$1*

to:
   XDM_AUTH_MASK=/var/run/xauth/A$1*

This solved the black screen hanging on logoff for me.

I'm not quite sure what to change if you're using Gnome, but I suspect it's
this line:
GDM_AUTH_FILE=/var/lib/gdm/$1.Xauth
