2024-05-14 Thread Steffen
@toniopelo I don't know about others but I'm inclined toward waiting for
Ubuntu 24.04.1 because of my personal experience. I was eager to upgrade
to Ubuntu 24.04 for unrelated reasons but reverted to Ubuntu 22.04.4 due
to experiencing display/GPU issues that I didn't have before.

In order to avoid removing vital packages when installing the proposed
package(s) on Ubuntu 22.04, I installed the following packages together:

sudo apt install gir1.2-mutter-10/jammy-proposed libmutter-10-0/jammy-

[Bug 1970066] Re: removing firefox snap after fresh 22.04 install with (encrypted) ZFS breaks APT, snapd

2022-04-23 Thread Steffen
I have found that installing a snap (e.g. chromium) on the first boot
without removing a snap (firefox) first also bricks the system, leaving
the user without any working web browser since firefox also stops
working.

[Bug 1970066] Re: removing firefox snap after fresh 22.04 install with (encrypted) ZFS breaks APT, snapd

2022-04-23 Thread Steffen
I was the one who originally had this issue and tried to get help on
IRC, so I can confirm that this happens on my system as well with ZFS
(encrypted) when running "snap remove firefox" during the first boot.

I decided to reproduce it again in order to submit my information but
"apport-collect 1970066" suggested that I create a separate report.

When I then ran "apport-bug snapd" it failed (see attached screenshot)
with a FileNotFoundError.

When I then tried to let apport-collect send my info anyway then it also
failed:

[Bug 1950071] Re: failed to create shim: OCI runtime create failed

2022-01-10 Thread Steffen Köhler
A user on github found a solution for this problem. THX to SCIF.
https://github.com/containerd/containerd/issues/6203

It seems docker.io installed runc once in the past in
/opt/containerd/bin/runc/. This old version there and the regular
(newest) one in /usr/bin/runc/ let us non-nvidia-runtime-users ran into
this problem.

With a "whereis runc" it is possible to check if there is a second runc-
runtime. If so, it helps to delete this very old version under
/opt/containerd/bin. After deleting this version for me everything works
perfect again, even with the latest version of docker.io on ubuntu
18.04.

[Bug 1950071] Re: failed to create shim: OCI runtime create failed

2021-11-13 Thread Steffen Köhler
I get the exact same error with docker.io (20.10.7-0ubuntu5~18.04.3) on
Ubuntu 18.04.06 running on ESXI.

But! I don´t use the nvidia runtime. It is not installed anyway. My
runtime is runc.

When I use docker.io (20.10.7-0ubuntu1~18.04.2) everything works fine,
and I can start any container without having error response "docker:
Error response from daemon: failed to create shim: OCI runtime create
failed: container_linux.go:348: starting container process caused "error
adding seccomp filter rule for syscall clone3: permission denied":
unknown."

For finding a solution I completly changed from docker.io to the latest
docker-ce. But nothing changed. Same error. So I went back to docker.io
(20.10.7-0ubuntu1~18.04.2) to keep my containers running.

Of course, the newer version pulled the fix (of my colleague) from

But it is still available in bionic and it was not working ever since
although it would be just adding the simple fix!

[Bug 1877000] Re: libjfxwebkit not present in the package for Focal amd64

2020-07-15 Thread Steffen K.
I can confirm this bug and that debian is not affected. I installed the
debian package (also had to install libjpeg62-turbo) as a workaround and
now the file libjfxwebview.so is there and javafx applications with
WebView do work. IMO this should be marked as very important, show
stopper or something, since it probably affects most of all JavaFX
applications, which is very unfortunate for an LTS release.

[Bug 1735981] Re: Huawei ME936 mobile broadband can't connect

2019-11-09 Thread Steffen Neumann
Hi, just want to update that the problem still exists under 19.10 live system.
I couldn't test whether the 77-mm-huawei-net-port-types.rules fix works,
since I only have a live-USB system where I can't add the file early enough.

How do we get the Modem Manager people to decide whether the above described
workaround is a proper fix that should be upstreamed ? Anything how we can help
?

Yours,
Steffen

[Bug 1850550] Re: megaraid_sas driver in linux-modules-4.15.0-66-generic prevents server with "Cisco UCS C3000 RAID Controller for M4 Server Blade" from booting

2019-11-01 Thread Steffen Higel
We were pointed at a newer firmware for the RAID controller 29.00.1-0356
(it wasn't immediately clear that this was available for our generation
of blade), and the system boots properly on both 4.15.0-66-generic and
5.0.0-23-generic.

I think that this should be closed.

[Bug 1850550] [NEW] megaraid_sas driver in linux-modules-4.15.0-66-generic prevents server with "Cisco UCS C3000 RAID Controller for M4 Server Blade" from booting

2019-10-29 Thread Steffen Higel
Public bug reported:

TLDR: system with rare LSI controller stopped booting when we upgraded
to kernel 4.15.0-66-generic.

The controller is a Cisco UCS C3000 RAID Controller for M4 Server Blade
with 4G RAID Cache, which Cisco tell me is a dual chip Broadcom 3316
ROC. To my knowledge, it is only used in their 56 disk 4U storage
server, so is probably not the most common of devices.

The controllers is running the latest firmware from Cisco (29.00.1-0110,
from 2015). It has 1 RAID1 VD and 56 drives exposed as JBODs.

Two different systems (16.04) with this controller went down for
automatic reboots last week and failed to come back up. The BMC notified
us that the RAID controller was in a faulted state, so we initially
assumed a hardware failure, but this turned out not to be the case.

The previous kernel version (4.15.0-65) boots fine. This also happens
with kernel 5.0.0-23 after we moved one up to 18.04.

On booting, we get dumped back to an initramfs prompt, and dmesg shows
some concerning stuff from the megaraid_sas driver:

At this point, booting fails, presumably because the boot device has
disappeared.

I’m not sure that if the “FAULT state” message is true. The devices
comes up fine without error when we reboot on the pervious kernel
version, and the device logs (storcli /c0 show termlog) doesn’t indicate
any issues when the system successfully boots. The battery is fine. The
only hint we see in the terminal logs is:

We noticed that the following changes in that kernel update:

- scsi: megaraid_sas: Fix combined reply queue mode detection
- scsi: megaraid_sas: Add check for reset adapter bit

I’m not sure if this is a firmware issue, or a bug in the driver, but
we’re effectively stuck on 4.15.0-65 for now.

Just ran across this bug because of a console-setup upgrade on a chroot-ed
Xenial (installed via debootstrap, exported via nfs for PXE boot, upgrades
always installed via chroot-ing on server). Whole upgrade process hangs at
"Preconfiguring packages ...".
Set "console-setup console-setup-linux keyboard-configuration" on hold for now.

[Bug 1811545] [NEW] Immediate resume from suspend when wifi enabled

2019-01-12 Thread Steffen Neumann
Public bug reported:

Hi,

on a current and update 18.04.01 my
Acer TravelMate P648-M/BAD40_SL, BIOS V1.21 07/21/2017
resumes immediately from suspend.

I can successfully enter suspend if I set laptop into flight mode.

This symptom only appeared the last few days,
earlier the same system suspended just fine.

There are no differences in /proc/acpi/wakeup
with and without flight mode.

=> What other debugging information would be needed
to figure what caused the resume with wifi enabled ?

Yours, Steffen

[Bug 1773457] Re: Full-system encryption needs to be supported out-of-the-box including /boot and should not delete other installed systems

2018-12-03 Thread Steffen Seeber
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1514120 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514120

I would like to support this bug report from the perspective of a security
oriented, pragmatic user, likely the kind of which there are plenty out there.

Ubuntu's great success has been and will be based on how user friendly it is,
and an overwhelming majority of the people who are looking at security just
want their whole system encrypted. Also in dual boot scenarios. Windows for
general purpose, Ubuntu for security relevant tasks such as banking or
sensitive administration. A wide-spread usecase.

Confronting them with exceptions such as an unencrypted /boot partition,
disabling encryption in dual boot scenarios or any other unnecessary
complications will just lower Ubuntu's acceptance in an increasingly
security aware user world.

Academic discussions about whether or not encryption has been designed
for tamper resistance just misses the point. Fact is that it does
increase it. Think of someone who breaches my Windows installation, and
discovers the parallel Ubuntu installation. They either just see one big
chunk of random data, or they see a clear-text /boot partition they can
play with. This is one unnecessary attack vector, no matter how easy or
hard it is to use.

I do not remember a single argument in this whole history against /boot
encryption that mentions a real disadvantage of the functionality. Yes,
there may be alternatives. No, it does not make a system perfectly safe.
But it helps, and not implementing it is like not implementing RAID
because one wants to force users to create backups.

[Bug 1788356] Re: python3-pip cannot be installed (Xenial)

2018-08-27 Thread Steffen Seckler via ubuntu-bugs
Hmm, I also am not able to reproduce this problem on other xenial systems.
Seems like the package lists were somehow broken.

I suppose xenial-updates was once activated and at some point was
deactivated again. That would definitely explain the error.

[Bug 1788356] [NEW] python3-pip cannot be installed (Xenial)

2018-08-22 Thread Steffen Seckler via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Hi,
on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install python3-pip

fails with

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 python3-pip : Depends: python-pip-whl (= 8.1.1-2) but 8.1.1-2ubuntu0.4 is to
be installed
Recommends: python3-dev (>= 3.2) but it is not going to be
installed
Recommends: python3-wheel but it is not going to be installed

this seems to be happening, because the wrong python-pip-whl is
specified for python3-pip.

The python-pip package, however, is fine:

sudo apt show python-pip
[...]
Depends: ca-certificates, python-pip-whl (= 8.1.1-2ubuntu0.4), python:any (<<
2.8), python:any (>= 2.7.5-5~)
[...]

so apparently python-pip and python3-pip can currently not be installed
together in ubuntu 16.04 (over apt).

fix:
fix dependencies

workaround:
sudo apt install python3-setuptools
sudo easy_install3 pip

In general I can confirm the above described behaviour for my fresh

- shortly after reboot I can't reproduce the problem too
- after a couple of days of notebook standby/wakeup you suddenly see during

[Bug 1780263] [NEW] Desktop icons are resized with nautilus icon size

When icons in nautilus (icon view mode) are increased, the icons on the

them disappear on the screen when icon size is increased. Icon size on

[Bug 1763454] Re: bpf_map_lookup_elem: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request

2018-04-19 Thread Steffen Neubauer
For us the importance of this issue would be High instead of Medium (not
sure if there is an objective definition somewhere, could not find it).
Reason is that we rely on BPF quite heavily in our infrastructure and
servers just crash pretty much immediately once we install the current
kernel version and reboot.

At some time in 2018 we will learn OpenPGP and alongside this we will be able

[Bug 1735981] [NEW] Huawei ME936 mobile broadband can't connect

2017-12-03 Thread Steffen Neumann
Public bug reported:

Hi, I have an Acer Travelmate P648 with a Huawei ME936
internal USB mobile broadband card, and can't connect.
This didn't work in 17.04, and still does not work in 17.10.

The USB device is successfully connected,
ModemManager gets as far as "Simple connect state (8/8): All done"
During the setup ModemManager complains with "Couldn't find associated cdc-wdm
port for 'net/wwp0s20f0u9c2'"

DHCP tries to get a configuration, but " dhcp4 (wwp0s20f0u9c2): request timed
out".
IP6 is set to "automatically" in the network settings for this configuration.

and finally connection fails with
"device (ttyUSB0): state change: ip-config -> failed (reason
'ip-config-unavailable', internal state 'managed')"

I checked that there are enough credits left in my account with the
provider.

Any ideas what else to check ?

Yours,
Steffen

[Bug 1727772] [NEW] Update to 2.1.1

2017-10-26 Thread Steffen Hemer
Public bug reported:

Just realised that although work at http://jung.sourceforge.net seems to
have stopped 7 years ago with version 2.0.1 which ever since is also the
state of this package, there is ongoing work at
https://github.com/jrtom/jung with version 2.1.1 from more than two
years ago.

This should be considered to be updated. I will have a look at our local
libjung package (containing the JAI classes) but I guess it is far less
effort for the package maintainers here/at debian to do so.

Regards

Steffen

Today again stumbled over this problem after initramfs-tools had an

annoying: can some one backport the mentioned fix from 0.122 ???

[Bug 1717257] Re: [bug / patch ]patch for glibc 2.26 to avoid errors in compiling with CUDA(NVCC)

2017-10-10 Thread Steffen Röcker
I've found several bug reports and am sure that the problem stems from
clang-3.8 being built with libstdc++-7-dev and not properly supporting
__float128
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=678033

Google patched gcc by hiding _GLIBCXX_USE_FLOAT128 from clang:
https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2012-05/msg00672.html

There also seems to be a simple typedef workaround:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13525774/clang-and-float128-bug-error

I had to patch /usr/include/c++/7.2.0/bits/std_abs.h
in order to compile cupy from source with CUDA8.
#if !defined(__STRICT_ANSI__) && defined(_GLIBCXX_USE_FLOAT128) &&
!defined(__CUDACC__)

2017-10-10 Thread Steffen Röcker
I can confirm the compilation problems with CUDA8.
Perhaps the correct package should be clang-3.8 since it's used by nvcc and is
incompatible with libstdc++-7-dev.

[Bug 1701005] [NEW] sporadic defunct of network-manager after standby

2017-06-28 Thread Steffen Kühn
Public bug reported:

ubuntu version: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS

network-manager version: 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

After the dist-upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 the network-manager seems to be
dead sometimes after returning from the standby. I am not completely
sure that it is really the network-manager but

sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart

helps. After that, the WLAN is available again. The bug occurs only in 1
of 10 cases.

The Debian package of this MUA (i maintain the code of) has been

Debian Woody and do not really know about the alternate mechanism.

It is definitely not a problem of the MUA itself, who tries more

You could try to place a mail symbolic link into your $PATH before

[Bug 1673250] [NEW] Internal HUAWEI Mobile Broadband Module not showing up as USB device

2017-03-15 Thread Steffen Neumann
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I am running an Acer P645 with internal USB UMTS modem.
The modem works using a 16.04.1 live USB stick,
but not on the installed on-disk 16.04.2.

Below is the lsusb -v in from the live-USB where the UMTS modem works,
first the USB Hub usb2, then the Huawei device. The information
from the running system where the modem does not show up is attached through
apport.

I also have access to dmesg on both systems, see further below
for the successful case. I also tried to copy kernel and modules
from the live-USB to the hadr disk, booted successfully,
but still nothing in lsusb. I also tried a few times to use

for i in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/[uoex]hci_hcd/*:*; do
  echo "${i##*/}" > "${i%/*}/unbind"
  echo "${i##*/}" > "${i%/*}/bind"
done

for resetting the bus, still the same.

I would welcome some suggestions what to test, if there could be
a firmware issue blocking the UMTS, if teh modem could be blacklisted
(how do I check that ?) whether udev or systemd could be a problem,
whether there could be a missing package in the HDD installation (which?!)
or if UEFI in the boot chain ("sdhci: Secure Digital Host Controller Interface
driver")
could cause an issue.

Or if it makes sense to manually run usb_modeswitch (how?)
without the device even be in lsusb ?

Yours,
Steffen

Yes, it is for logwatch and not bind.
No, it is not upstream.

I'll send it to upstream then and post the relevant link/bug id here.

Well, your problem report isn't very detailed, i don't know.
I don't have Apple Mail around, let alone on iOS. Could very well
be an Apple Mail bug, then? I really cannot tell you, i even use
my own CA storage when i can, and never touched KeychainAccess.app
or whatever the name was/is. Yes, i have imported certificates
into Firefox once.

Of course there could be a S-nail bug: can you use the shown
openssl smime(1) commands on your target platform and re-verify it
is all working also there? Maybe we find something subtle, then
i would like to fix it? Otherwise i am out of ideas -- except
there were quite some fixes since v14.8.9, not to talk about .6,
what you say. Not directly OpenSSL related, but of course
indirectly content could be different, and possibly Apple Mail
doesn't like what it sees when it decodes the content, though
i personally never have seen any message which would trigger those
problems (thinking about commit [ba29651], for example).
Would you be willing to check against v14.8.14, whether the
problem is solved there? Download from

  https://www.sdaoden.eu/downloads/s-nail-latest.tar.xz

for example, simply "make all" and then use ./s-nail from within?
That would be nice.

Thank you, and ciao

2016-11-09 Thread Steffen (Daode) Nurpmeso
Hi.
I'll bring it all together here, in the meantime i have subscribed
my poor I to Ubuntu, too...

Sven Neuhaus <sven-launch...@sven.de> wrote:
 |I added these two lines to the .mailrc file on both machines:

Yes, sorry, that was a typo, it is smime-xy.

 |Also I replaced the content type, as suggested.
 |
 |The problem remains.

and

 |I tried both your suggestions:
 |
 |a) change the content type back to application/x-pkcs7-mime
 |b) add "set mime-cipher=aes256" and
 | "set mime-sign-message-digest=sha512"
 | directives to the .mailrc
 |
 |The issue remains: I can decrypt the mails sent via heirloom-mailx but
 |not those from s-nail.

That seems to be a very tough problem, then. ^.^

 |Are there any command line tools that let you analyze the smime.p7m

..and..

 |I had a quick look at cc-test.sh.
 |
 |The S/MIME test seems to be: encrypt an email with s-nail and decrypt it
 |with s-nail and check if they are identical.
 |
 |That does not check a lot.
 |
 |Are there any other command line tools to analyze S/MIME mails?

That is quite funny, indeed yesterday evening i thought about
extending the test and adding calls to openssl itself, i.e., the
command line application. We don't do much, Gunnar Ritter, the
original author, practically followed 1:1 the popular book on
OpenSSL programming ("Network Security with OpenSSL", Pravir
Chandra, Matt Messier, John Viega, O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00270-X).

But you will find that using the command line application just
works fine on S/MIME mails generated by S-nail, e.g.,

  < ENCRYPTED-FILE
openssl smime -decrypt -inkey tkey.pem |
  openssl smime -verify -CAfile TRUSTED-FILE-STORE

But i have extended the test and credited you for that:

[Bug 1640190] Re: S/MIME encryption broken

2016-11-08 Thread Steffen (Daode) Nurpmeso
Hello,

i am the maintainer of S-nail and i responded to the question of the
poster as archived at

  https://sourceforge.net/p/s-nail/s-nail/message/35479133/
or
  http://www.mail-archive.com/s-nail-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00530.html

It follows a copy of the answer:

I don't think there is an issue on our side, S/MIME is tested via
cc-test.sh in the distribution.
I wouldn't exactly call the bug report detailed, your setup must
be different from what the bug report states, i.e., more complete.
Have you read the manual ("Signed and encrypted messages
with S/MIME")?

Compared to Heirloom mailx the S/MIME support has been actualized
a little bit regarding the standard RFC 5751. E.g., if you
replace the line

  Content-Type: application/pkcs7-mime; name="smime.p7m"
with
  Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-mime; name="smime.p7m"

then maybe that fixes the problem, though unlikely because other
MUAs use this one exclusively for some time.

More likely the culprit is the upgrade of the *smime-cipher*[1]
from des3 (DES EDE3 CBC) to aes128 (AES-128 CBC). If i recall
correctly Heirloom used 3des for the name, so if you have set the
cipher to 3des then this could also be it.
You now can also fine-tune the message digest by setting the
*smime-sign-message-digest*[2] option, i.e., more backward
compatible:

  set mime-cipher=des3 mime-sign-message-digest=MD5

More forward compatible

  set mime-cipher=aes256 mime-sign-message-digest=sha512

  [2] https://www.sdaoden.eu/code-nail.html#_437
