[Bug 1736116] Re: [SRU] Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2018-03-13 Thread Stephan Springer
I can confirm that virtualbox 5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 and
virtualbox-ext-pack 5.1.34-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 work on Xenial with the
Linux Kernel 4.13.0-36 without any freeze. I cannot test the other
packages or those on Artful at the moment.

Thanks for the effort to fix this!

I'm experiencing this freeze with Linux 4.13 on the host and Windows as
the guest. But the freeze happens when the guest starts booting, so I
don't think the guest system matters much.

[Bug 1736116] [NEW] Host freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2017-12-04 Thread Stephan Springer
Public bug reported:

This is a spin-off of bug 1729568. With Kernel 4.13 (from linux-generic-

using VirtualBox. A black boot window pops up right before the freeze.

Sorry, the computer still freezes completely in the moment when I click

when running a 4.13 kernel on the host. It still works on a 4.11 kernel.

Do I need to do anything else besides installing the three packages

I could only install virtualbox-guest-dkms-hwe, virtualbox-guest-utils-
hwe and virtualbox-guest-source-hwe, not virtualbox-guest-x11-hwe due to
dependency conflicts. I hope that's not a problem …

I can't boot into 4.13 at the moment, so I'll report on that later.

With kernel 4.11 it works. See comments #7 and #9.

Actually, there are two bugs here:
 * Build for 4.11 fails, see bug 1713638 (patch included there).
 * Build for 4.13 fails: I can confirm that, but a different patch is needed. I
personally can't run this kernel yet because of that bug.

Lots of similar bugs have been reported, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bugs?orderby=-date_last_updated=0
(for different kernel versions, including also 4.4 and 4.10).

Linked from here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=228110

But maybe it is even fixed upstream already.

Forget my last comment, Wifi does not work correctly with kernel 4.11.

I had to switch back to kernel 4.10 to get a working bcmwl (and Wifi)
again.

2016-06-28 Thread Stephan Springer
Martin Pitt committed some fix in October 2015, but apparently that did
not solve this bug, or only partly.

What's the correct way to handle this? Reopen this bug or open a new one
referring to this one?

This still happens for me, too (Ubuntu 16.04), and the workaround from
#50 fixes it.

[Bug 1503159] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT

2015-10-20 Thread Stephan Springer
Yes, the system is definitely unusable. The screen is black for about 30
seconds, and then the login screen appears.

Obviously, all running programs have been stopped, which means a
potential data loss.

Today it happened two times in a row, both times when Shift-clicking on
the “Reply” button at an e-mail in Thunderbird.

In the last three weeks while on Wily I've had this crash five or six
times.

This also occurred on a Lenovo Edge E130 and an Acer Aspire V.

Simply running «sudo dpkg --configure -a» fixed it for me, but update-
manager still didn't finish properly. I had to clean up the packages and
reboot by hand.

[Bug 1270257] Re: NetworkManager failed to function after suspend and resume

2015-07-12 Thread Stephan Springer
Reconnecting wifi worked fine here until the system upgrade to 15.04
(vivid). Since then, after suspend and resume wifi does not work almost
always.

No wifi networks are shown in the network manager menu then, and I have
to either switch networking completely off and on again, or select
“connect to hidden nework…” and choose the desired SSID there. This is
really annoying, and I'm thinking about switching to another distro
because of this (and bug 1268257).

But this happens only on an Acer Laptop, not on another one from Lenovo.

$ lspci -v -s 4:0.0
04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device e04b
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
Memory at b350 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: access denied
Kernel driver in use: wl

Have I found the correct bug report, or should I file a new one?

Is there any better workaround than the mine?

[Bug 1295909] Re: Unity spread trigger ruins windows and freezes desktop

2015-05-04 Thread Stephan Springer
I've had problems with window spread before, too, but only on a laptop
with Nvidia graphics. On another one with Intel graphics, it works
flawlessly.

Anyways, after upgrading to vivid, I tried to enable window spread using
unity-tweak-tool again, and I got that freeze plus (after a while) crash
again. But this time, it was so bad that I could not even log in any
more. Afer entering my password, and after a second or so, I was always
presented with a completely white (or light gray) screen, and after a
mouse click, there was the login screen again. A reboot did not help,
either.

So after removing some config files in my home directory also did not
help, I removed all nvidia-* packages. Now I could log in again, and
finally I had a chance to switch window spread off again! (By the way,
it still crashes.)

I also got many apport crash popups after being able to login again
(Xorg, compiz, apport).

I guess I was hit by multiple bugs at once. Do you need any additional
information?

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2013-04-22 Thread Stephan Springer
aptitude_0.6.6-1ubuntu1.2_amd64 from precise-proposed fixes this issue
for me.

I checked by trying to install wine. The dependency resolution only
grumbles about one “recommends” which can't be resolved, which is
probably okay. Before it would try to remove (almost?) every package
installed.

formerly this bug hit me after (almost?) every reboot.

Thanks!

[Bug 1135474] [NEW] Enable global menu in Emacs

2013-02-28 Thread Stephan Springer
Public bug reported:

Due to bug 673302 global menus are currently disabled for Emacs in

In my opinion, the underlying bug about incorrectly displayed dynamic

[Bug 879838] Re: Keyboard Layout Germany Neo 2: Mod4 does not work if used as secondary keyboard layout

2013-02-14 Thread Stephan Springer
This bug annoys me, too, and I've seen it in Oneiric (11.10) and Precise
(12.04). I guess it is present in Quantal and Raring, too.

I have configured “German Neo 2” and “German eliminate dead keys”
layouts, and whatever I choose as the secondary layout does not work
correctly. Only the primary layout works as expected.

If Neo is the secondary layout, both Mod4 keys are completely ignored,
so instead of layer 4 and 6 I get layer 1 and 3, respectively. (See http
://neo-layout.org/ for details.)

If “Qwertz” is the secondary layout, I can't type “”, “” and “|”,
because the left one of the two Neo-Mod4-keys is dead. This makes
working on the command line rather impossible.

My workaround is to select Neo as the primary layout, and if someone
else (unfamiliar with Neo) needs to type on my keyboard, I have to
change the primary layout.

[Bug 1051169] Re: Keyborad Layout Chart has missing keys on NEO2 layout

2013-02-14 Thread Stephan Springer
The attached screen shot shows quite well what is missing. On the left
you see the actual layout preview, and on the right you see the correct
layout with circles around the items missing on the left.

See http://neo-layout.org/ for a complete layout overview. Hover over
“Ebene 1” to “Ebene 6” to see the different layers and which key(s)
activate them.

[Bug 1111293] [NEW] Translation wrong in “help pwd”

-Pprint the physical directory, without any symbolic links
