Initially the dragging of an icon from dash to the launcher works.
However, once I have removed an icon from the launcher, dragging to the
launcher stops working. Mysteriously, it later starts working again,
and I can once again drag to the launcher!

[Bug 480037] Re: Closing laptop lid crashes Ubuntu

2009-11-18 Thread Stephen Hall
Hi Leann,

Thanks for this, all done as suggested. Unfortunately however, the
utility does not write anything to /var/crash and so I have been unable
to gather any data.

It appears that as soon as the laptop lid is closed, all activity ceases
immediately and so the contents of the crash are not written to the log.
I've had a dig around to see if there's anything that I can change to do
it and saw that the LKCD utility is not designed to gather helpful
information in the case of a hardware caused panic.

I'm fairly sure that the crash is caused by the video because I can get
around it with nomodeset.

Thanks again.

[Bug 480037] [NEW] Closing laptop lid crashes Ubuntu

2009-11-10 Thread Stephen Hall
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to Karmic.
On both my Dell Latitude X300 and Dell Latitude D400 closing the laptop lid
causes some sort of panic. I expect the laptop to standby, but in actual fact
the screen goes black - apart from the mouse pointer which is fixed, but
visible - and the laptop is entirely unresponsive to any and all keystrokes.
The only way out is to hard reset by holding the power button down.

Searching bugs led me to try disabling KMS using the nomodeset option.
This restores the correct functionality as I used to see in Jaunty.
Another suggested option is to set ForceEnablePipeA in X, but without
an Xorg.conf file in Karmic, this is not an option.

Particularly a problem when performing upgrades via aptitude. Problem
completely solved by specifying Opendns as my DNS servers. I do not

[Bug 93968] Re: ubuntu-desktop is dependant on too many things

2007-05-05 Thread Stephen Hall
I am coming across the same problem in many cases. Tried to uninstall
gaim, but nautilus-sendto depends on gaim, and ubuntu-desktop depends on
nautilus-sendto. Surely these should be recommends rather than
dependencies.
