[Bug 1539300] Re: unity-system-compositor crashed on rethrow with no usable stack trace

2017-04-04 Thread Stephen M. Webb
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1531787 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531787

Marked this as a duplicate of bug #1531787 because they're effectively
the same (not very useful) stack trace, with the difference being due to
ARM EABI vs. x86 API in the C++ runtime library. I notice that this bug
only occurs on ARM, and #1531787 only occurs on x86.

[Bug 1676931] [NEW] logs are not included in bugs automatically reported to Ubuntu using apport

2017-03-28 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Public bug reported:

When a crash in unity-system-compositor is automatically reported to the
Ubuntu bug tracker using the apport tool, additional information should
be included to make analysis easier.

At the very least, /var/log/lightdm/unity-system-compositor.log should
be included.

[Bug 1675364] Re: [Regression] xmir applications fail to render

2017-03-23 Thread Stephen M. Webb
It seems the difference between my two test machines is that one one I
had logged in to Unity 7 previously, and that left gnome-session-binary
running. After a reboot to kill all systemd --user units, konsole now
hangs on both test machines.

It looks like this problem is in konsole, which requires gnome-session
to be running in order to function normally.

[Bug 1662400] Re: ubuntu-app-test fails to launch apps at all [CRITICAL **: Unable to get PID for 'ubuntu-app-test' application]

2017-03-22 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The silo does not help for me. Mir applications fail to connect, but
not with the error described in this bug. Instead I get various errors
about being unable to connect to the Mir server, which vary depending on
the test client used.

Further investigation shows connections to the Mir server are failing
with the error "Error processing request: Invalid prompt session" when
the proxy socket is used, but if the regular MIR_SOCKET value is forced
the connection succeeds.

I had to use strace to glean the actual connection failure message since
it gets swallowed somewhere in the Mir client.

[Bug 1671731] Re: [xmir] closing an app while a child window is opened leaves an Xmir process opened eating 100% CPU

2017-03-20 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This is simple to reproduce. The application has disappeared from the
screen but continues to run.

It looks like qtmir is closing the window (as requested) but no word
gets out to the actual process (ie. there is no session management).
I'm suspecting the Unity 8 lifecycle for desktops is not in place yet.

Here's a snippet from $HOME/.cahe/upstart/unity8.log.

[Bug 1672231] Re: Phablet couldn't create container for puritine apps

2017-03-13 Thread Stephen M. Webb
I'd recommend you *don't* use Terminal App for container creation.

The error messages look like a problem in the archives to me. On that
hardware the chroot back end is being used which run debootstrap from
the http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports archives. The "Couldn't
download package" errors sound like the index files at the archives do
not match the actual packages somehow. The "Failed to create container"
message indicates the debootstrap failed.

I'm suspecting this problems is caused by the Vivid archives getting
messed up.

[Bug 1672231] Re: Phablet couldn't create container for puritine apps

2017-03-13 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Are you creating the container using the Terminal App? There is a known
bug in the terminal app
https://bugs.launchpad.net/libertine/+bug/1605354 you may be running in
to. Try using ssh (even from the terminal app) to get around
confinement.

Basic creation of a container on the M10 should just work on shipped
images. Is this a custom Xenial image or a supported Ubuntu Touch
image?

[Bug 1668700] Re: Blank default scope in unity8-deb

2017-03-02 Thread Stephen M. Webb
How does unity-scope-mediascanner2 have anything to do with an empty
dash in Unity 8? Adding it does not make the Dash have any content, so
it does not appear to be a relevant for for this bug.

[Bug 1668429] Re: X apps fail to launch with failure to open display (no Xmir running or no access to it)

2017-02-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The log shows Firefox is being run natively under Unity 8 (no Xmir).
Firefox is known to not be built natively for Mir, so it's not a
surprise that it it not start.

Assuming that an Xmir instance should be launched just in case for any
and all applications run under Unity 8 was purposefully disabled to
prevent unwanted empty black windows from covering the screen.

because the usual Gnome session daemons are not run in the non-Gnome

[Bug 1300925] Re: Unity 8 Desktop Preview session does not show (most) installed apps

2016-10-28 Thread Stephen M. Webb
#1608342 is about surfacing apps that can run natively on Mir under
Unity 8. This bug is about surfacing X11 applications under Unity 8.
They're separate problems with different solutions. In the case of
native applications, an entry in the .desktop file should indicate Mir
compatibility. No such entry should invoke the containerless Libertine
launcher and an appropriate Mir client such as XMir or a Mir terminal
emulator.

[Bug 1613708] Re: [regression] Xmir: Some buttons are unclickable after rotating the screen

2016-09-14 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Updated debdiff after adding new changelog and backporting to Mir 0.21.

** Attachment removed: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

** Attachment added: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1613708/+attachment/4740857/+files/debdiff

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

XMir clients do not have their input transform matrix modified properly
when the screen dimensions and orientation change (ie. rotation).

This shows up primarily on Bq M10 tablets which rotate on startup.

  [Test Case]

Install XMir on a device that supports screen rotation. Connect a
client (using Libertine is the easiest way to do this). Attempt to use
direct or indirect pointer input on the right side of the screen. The
  bug is it does nothing.

  [Regression Potential]

This change affects only the XMir server. There is potential that XMir
functionality is compromized but mainline x.org functionality is
  unaffected.

This XMir patch update is pulled directly from Ubuntu current
development release "Yakkety Yak" where it has been in production for
more than 6 weeks without apparent regressions.

  [Other Info]

The patch update also includes bugfixes for bug #1617925, bug #1617932,
  and bug #1591356.
+
+ This patch differs from the patch in Ubuntu "Yakkety Yak" to compile
+ with Mir 0.21. The only functional difference is an extra message
+ logged when run against Mir 0.24.

[Bug 1620324] Re: Virtual keyboard on Xapps using Qt4 don't work

2016-09-08 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Apps not using Qt5 or GTK+3 (and a handful of other toolkits) are
unlikely to work with the OSK. The fundamental assumption in most X11
applications is that there is a physical keyboard attached to the
system.

In order to support redirecting OSK input through the Linux kernel
uinput system for full support, we would either need to completely
rewrite Maliit and considerable portions of the Unity 8 input stack or
choose an alternative OSK for Desktop Applications. In either case we
would lose the ability to position the keyboard on the screen
appropriately for the content.

I would suggest the simplest solution is to stuck with the original
restriction which was that full desktop application support will require
a physical keyboard and your experience will be reduced without meeting
that requirement.
