No, but I may have had problems with the rename during a previous
upgrade. When I looked at the server there was quite a mess of squid
versus squid3 named directories. What is the release history for squid
versus squid3 naming?

[Bug 1414507] Re: rsyslog hangs if setuid during logging process causes further logging

2015-01-25 Thread Stephen Parry
I found a workaround that shuts libnss up; the following settings in
/etc/ldap.conf were:

nss_initgroups_minimum_uid 0
nss_initgroups_ignoreusers root

I changed:

nss_initgroups_minimum_uid 30

then used usermodify to shuffle the syslog user uid (it was 120ish):

usermodify -u14 syslog
groupmodify -g14 syslog

I then re-populated nss_initgroups_ignore_users using:

service libnss-ldap restart

giving:

nss_initgroups_ignoreusers
bin,daemon,games,lp,mail,man,news,proxy,root,sync,sys,syslog,uucp

This shut libnss_ldap up and stopped the log from hanging.

[Bug 1414507] [NEW] rsyslog hangs if setuid during logging process causes further logging

2015-01-25 Thread Stephen Parry
Public bug reported:

I have a server which uses slapd and libnss_ldap based authentication through
nsswitch.conf as per the manuals. After upgrading to 14.04 we lost our logging
altogether; syslog was un-installed. After first installing syslog-ng I
switched to using rsyslogd. The server hung consistently on boot. After several
days of debugging, I have finally identified how and where the problem
manifests.
When any process starts logging, rsyslog setgids and setuids as specified in
rsyslog.conf. The setgid generally works OK (it is already running that group
id) the setuid calls nss which then attempts to contact LDAP. LDAP is not yet
running and cannot at that point in the startup. nss then tries to log a
warning re-entering back into rsyslog. This locks up rsyslog, the calling
process and any subsequent calling processes. boom.

In the attached apport I have simulated what happens using the logger
command with rsyslog running but slapd stopped.

[Bug 1216840] [NEW] webdavs files not acccessible to POSIX apps

2013-08-26 Thread Stephen Parry
Public bug reported:

Mounting webdavs share via GVFS (in my case using gigolo), remote file system
should be accessible via gvfs-fuse at /run/user/username/gvfs/. Instead just
get input/output errors when listing and reading files.
Steps to reproduce:
Use gigolo to connect to remote DAVS file storage using Actions - Connect,
Actions- Open
Check connectivity via gvfs:

gvfs-ls davs://remoteu...@www.somesite.com/somepath
gvfs-cat davs://remoteu...@www.somesite.com/somepath/somefile.txt

In my case, these work fine. Now try:

ls -l
/run/user/localuser/gvfs/dav\:host\=www.somesite.com\,ssl\=true\,user\=remoteuser/somepath
cat
/run/user/localuser/gvfs/dav\:host\=www.somesite.com\,ssl\=true\,user\=remoteuser/somepath/somefile.txt

Get these errors:

ls: cannot access
/run/user/parrysg/gvfs/dav:host=www.mainscreen.com,ssl=true,user=parry2sg/files/test.txt:
 Input/output error
:
:
cat:

[Bug 1156138] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source fails to build on lowlatency kernel [FATAL: modpost: GPL-incompatible module wl.ko uses GPL-only symbol '__rcu_read_unlock']

2013-07-24 Thread Stephen Parry
OK, I have spent quite a while bashing my head against this brick wall
now, trying to suss out why the lowlatency kernel build chokes, whilst
the generic does not. I suspect it is heavily buried somewhere either in
the compiler flags or in the deeper headers.

This is what I have found so far: if you compile low latency, as soon as
wl_cfg80211.c includes an invocation either to rtnl_lock or rtnl_unlock
(a fairly essential thing to do), the compile adds a U symbol for the
__rcu_read_lock and __rcu_read_unlock. Remove the all the rtnl_lock and
rtnl_unlock calls and the rcu symbols vanish too. Under generic they are
never there; it relies on whatever module defines rtnetlink to request
those symbols. The rtnetlink.h header is identical tween the two and
there is only minimal #if stuff, none of which seems to relate to low
latency stuff.

any ideas anyone?

2013-07-24 Thread Stephen Parry
Dug deeper, got more answers, but also more questions: rcupdate.h is heavily
conditional on PREEMPT causing __rcu_read_lock/unlock to be extern rather than
inline.
However, this leaves the most fundamental question of all: why are some
functions OK to call from non-GPL code but others not? should these functions
be marked as OK to call?

2013-07-22 Thread Stephen Parry
It would help if the Broadcom's brcmsmac developers would pick up the
pace a little and get something into the kernel that is stable,
effective, open source and supported. I only tried switching back to iwl
because brcmsmac is both deaf and drops out frequently on my BCM4313
chipset.

Not to mention it's taken them until literally the last six months to
get AP mode in.

It would win Broadcom so much goodwill (a real first) if they supported
the project to full fruition.

[Bug 582809] Re: Synaptics Clickpad touchpad buttons are not working

2011-08-03 Thread Stephen Parry
I can confirm that the i386.deb posted here works on my HP tm2 2050
under Natty, except for the disable double tap and LED.

Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 7.4, id: 0x1e0b1, caps:
0xd04773/0xe4/0x5a0400

Is there anything more I need to do to get the disable / LED function
working please?

Also recent mainstream kernel updates appear to have broken what support
I had under Lucid for the same machine. Previously I had right click
(right down on the lowest edge of the touchpad) now I don't; so but for
the efforts of you guys here, this bug is getting worse.

Thanks for everyone here's efforts in attempting to fix this.

Can we _please_ have the Debian package downstream in Lucid? I've wasted
several hours bashing my head against a brick wall because I assumed
when came to upgrade to Lucid that the Ubuntu maintained package would
work.

[Bug 625546] [NEW] touchpad clickpad button area wrong on hp tm2

2010-08-27 Thread Stephen Parry
Public bug reported:

The touchpad on the HP tm2 2050 laptop is a synaptic clickpad type. When trying
to use the left right and middle 'buttons', only a very narrow strip of the pad
along the bottom edge responds correctly - the boundary between the 'pointing'
area and the 'buttons' appears to be approximately 700 units too low. Having
looked briefly at the code, I have come to the conclusion that either:
a) The value for YMIN_NOMINAL in synaptics.c is too low for this touchpad -
i.e. this touchpad does not comply with the Synaptic documentation.
b) There is a low level hardware initialization option for the touchpad
controlling the boundary between the two areas that has not been set correctly.
using
option psmouse proto=imps
Forces the touchpad into ps2 mouse mode which removes this problem, but then
prevents the touchpad from being further recognised as a touchpad and
configured in any way, e.g. to turn off tap to click.

[Bug 574046] Re: shares-admin doesn't see NFS and SMB installed (no support for Upstart jobs)

2010-08-16 Thread Stephen Parry
Am I right in thinking that Nautilus shares are effectively 'user level'
and hence are only available whilst that user is logged in, whereas
shares-admin edits /etc/samba/smb.conf, providing 'system level' shares?
If this is so then it makes a stronger case for having shares-admin or a
replacement working. I've managed by manually hacking smb.conf before,
but it is a pain...

[Bug 290498] Re: linux-rt restricted to one CPU

2009-05-30 Thread Stephen Parry
Hi,
Here are my experiences of using Realtime Dutchman's 25th May build for about
36 hours:
Firstly, I am running with a different installation order from RTD:
1. Install 9.04 studio (all multimedia options) - reboot
2. Install all updates - reboot
3. Add workaround for clash involving snd-hda-intel driver and my system (see
below) - reboot
4. Install headers
5. Install image - reboot.
6. Enable memlock 50% nice -99 via @ - System - Administration - Ubuntu
Studio Controls - Reboot

My acpi works infinitely better with kernel than it did without!

I have not dared enable wireless yet in any shape or form because the
iwl3945 driver seems yet again to be very broken. I will try this later.

So far, my system:
- Boots
- Reboots
- Shuts down
- ~0% idle CPU
- realtime Jack
- captures and plays back audio (jack, audacious, audacity, ZynAddSubFx)
- suspends, resumes and hibernates (caveat - some processes exit)

* IT DOES THESE RELIABLY *

This is 100% improvement on the stock studio realtime kernel.

My snd-hda-intel needs a tweak to alsa-base.conf and the volume controls, but
this is nothing to do with this realtime kernel; it's been a problem with my
system at least as far back as hardy:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m27 enable_msi=0 probe_mask=1
Unmute the capture channel in the standard volume control / alsa mixer.
For those interested, without this JACKD watchdog timeouts trying to open the
capture channel.

My system is as follows:
Dell Inspiron 9400 / E1705, 1GB memory, Core Duo 1.8GHz, Intel 945GM graphics,
SigmaTel HDA, Intel 3945ABG wireless.

2009-05-30 Thread Stephen Parry
Hi all, just to direct your attention to the discussions here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-rt/+bug/290498;

Realtime Ducthman has compiled and made available a build of the rt
kernel which seems to work very well (see copy of my latest post below),
resolving the iowait issues and such; it's worth a look.

[Bug 270226] Re: ubuntu studio splash screen corrupts consoles on boot

2008-10-30 Thread Stephen Parry
Having studied #63558 a little more closely, this is much worse than the
original bug. The original bug only affected the Ctrl-Alt-F1-F6 VT
screens. This bug actually affects the main GUI screen (Ctrl-Alt-F7) as
well, rendering the system unusable. This should be Importance HIGH.

[Bug 270226] [NEW] ubuntu studio splash screen corrupts consoles on boot

2008-09-14 Thread Stephen Parry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash-theme-ubuntustudio

When booting a fresh install of ubuntu studio 8.04.1 Hardy on Intel
945GM graphics chipset (driver=agpgart-intel module=intel_agp), 2 out of
3 times the splash screen (0.18) corrupts all consoles, preventing
further use of the system. Disabling the splash screen or replacing it
with the standard Ubuntu splash removes the problem. This seems to be a
manifestation of an earlier bug #63558, which was corrected in the main
Ubuntu splash.

[Bug 63558] Re: Latest usplash leaves my consoles corrupted

2008-08-22 Thread Stephen Parry
I wish to add that I am experiencing this problem in UbuntuStudio
distribution of *HARDY*. I get one in three reliable boots, other two
all VTs are corrupted until shutdown. I have Intel Mobile 945GM using
the new standard kernel driver (not i810) at 1920x1200. It does not seem
to affect the vanilla Ubuntu Live CD, only studio with its custom
splash. The problem goes away if I edit out splash from menu.lst

2008-08-02 Thread Stephen Parry
I can confirm the following additional information regarding this problem:
- The problem is still present in Hard Heron (8.04)
- The problem also affects molecules when run standalone and -root
- The problem still occurs when run with option ForcePCIMode true in X
configuration.
- the X log file contains the following confirming (?) the ForcePCIMode option:

- My lspci -nn output is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro
Ultra TF [1002:5446]
- There are other duplicate reports of this bug, some recent, (#231949,
#190580, #72672, #72942)
- I attach my xorg.conf
This problem is pretty ripe by now, will somebody please fix it?
If any further information is still required, please let me know and I _will_
supply
