[Bug 1860390] Re: Dell XPS 13 (9360) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep (suspend to ram)

2022-03-09 Thread Steve Kroon
I have the same issue on a Dell Latitude 5420 - and I can not use the
workaround described in the question - writing to /sys/power/mem_sleep
seems to be prohibited, even for a root user:

$ ls -als /sys/power/mem_sleep
0 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Mar 3 17:16 /sys/power/mem_sleep
$ sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
bash: /sys/power/mem_sleep: Permission denied

[Bug 1473060] [NEW] Error message: BUG In pixman_region32_init_rect: Invalid rectangle passed error in evince

2015-07-09 Thread Steve Kroon
Public bug reported:

This is pretty much the same bug as reported for debian at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=728678 . I'm not sure
how the Ubuntu and Debian bug trackers interact (if at all), so
reporting here as well. (I've tried confirming the bug there, but not
sure if they'll accept a package with ubuntu in the confirmation
version...)

Summary:

running evince on some pdf files, including
http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/downloads/pdf/maps/BedStuy_ExpStuyHeights_DESIGNATION_FINAL%20MAP.pdf
causes the following error messages to be output to the console a number of

[Bug 1296270] Re: Have to login twice after suspending

2015-02-17 Thread Steve Kroon
Ok, I installed and tested the new kernel, and I have not yet had this
issue. [However, booting back into the old kernel after that also did
not trigger the behaviour for me again, either. (It has always been
sporadic on my machine.)] If I get the behaviour back on either kernel,
I will try to update here.

I got redirected here by a System program problem detected dialog

expect I should instead be redirected to bug #1289083, but that is
marked as a duplicate of this.

@Joseph I am still experiencing this. (Sorry, I must have missed my

How do I test the kernel referred to - do I just download the two
relevant .deb's and install them? Also, should I use the generic or
lowlatency version?

[Bug 1294636] [NEW] anki version in precise repositories (1.2.9) is no longer supported

2014-03-19 Thread Steve Kroon
Public bug reported:

When starting Anki (version 1.2.9) for the first time in Precise, I am prompted
to click on Download to get started. Doing so
leads to a deck saying this version is no longer supported. (Trying to
download this deck leads to a dialog with the following error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/share/anki/ankiqt/ui/getshared.py, line 190, in accept
self.curRow[R_ID])
TypeError: %d format: a number is required, not unicode
)

It seems one can still create and import decks, but downloading is a
dead end.

[Bug 1070867] [NEW] No don't know/irrelevant options when using apport for reporting samba bugs/crashes

2012-10-24 Thread Steve Kroon
Public bug reported:

Original post about this at: http://askubuntu.com/questions/202029/keep-
getting-smbd-errors-but-apport-asks-questions-i-cant-answer .

When I get smbd crashes on my system, apport tries to handle the
reporting, but starts off by trying to ask questions. I can't
sensibly/usefully answer these questions. For example, the first
question asks:

How would you best describe your setup?
-I am running a Windows File Server
-I am connecting to a Windows File Server.

Since I am doing both, I have no idea which to choose. In any case, selecting
one leads to the next question:
Did this used to work properly with a previous release?
-No
-Yes

But I never tried to use Samba in a previous release, so I can't
seriously answer this.

After picking an option here, I get more questions in a similar vein.
Surely there should be I don't know/I haven't tried options, even if
they simply mean apport tells you that you can't submit a useful bug
report.

[Bug 848605] Re: session-installer crashed with AlreadyCalledDeferred in callback()

2012-07-19 Thread Steve Kroon
I got referred to this bug by my system. Before that, Rhythmbox had
prompted me if I wanted to install plugins, and it was trying to install
them. This failed with the error message below. Other possibly
relevant information: at the time this happened, the Update Manager was
open (but not active - i.e. not downloading/installing updates).

Error message:

session-installer (Window Title)

There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that
allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package
management related tasks.

Details:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message
bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the

[Bug 818518] [NEW] Natty installer crashed

2011-07-30 Thread Steve Kroon
Public bug reported:

When running the Natty installer on my computer (with option replace
existing operating systems), I get the message installer crashed
during the installation (after querying my time zone and keyboard, while
copying files, I think). It asked me to include my syslog and partman
files, which I will attach to this report. After clicking close on
the installer crash message, I get another message saying that an
unrecoverable error was encountered, and that a desktop session would be
launched for debugging/reinstall. However, there seems to be something
wrong with the screen refresh in that session, making it pretty much
unusable. I could determine that a popup window with title Open
Location was spawned, but I could not see the text in the window. In
the end, I copied the syslog and partman files off the machine via the
network.

[Bug 330454] Re: error: duplicate REP tables used

2009-11-10 Thread Steve Kroon
Thanks. I have, since upgrading to Karmic, overwritten the en_ZA affix
file with the en_GB copy. To me, both solutions are cludgy. What
should happen is that an update should be issued which does this (and
anything else that needs to be done at the same time) for the user.

This is to give the user peace of mind that the problem has been fixed
correctly. [For example, if you hadn't posted about update en_ZA.dic, I
wouldn't have known that also needs updating.]

It might be worth noting that in comment #34, I pointed out that
kpackagekit itself was prompting me originally, but the update-notifier
component wasn't. Perhaps that component doesn't call the gnome stuff
if it's not invoked from within kpackagekit?

@Leo, James

I installed the policykit from James' PPA, and the bug is still there
(i.e. update-notifier tells me I don't have privileges, rather than
prompting for username and password.

However, I found out that when I run update-notifier-kde on the command-
line, at the stage where I usually get this error message, there is a
prompt for user information on the command line. Filling that in works,
and the upgrade goes through. Here's a transcript:

[Bug 291135] Re: Out of date java 6 plugin installed

2009-07-09 Thread Steve Kroon
Erm - can't see how to edit my previous submission:

I meant: How are users supposed to know to _reinstall_ (the package)

[Bug 291135] Re: Out of date java 6 plugin installed

2009-07-08 Thread Steve Kroon
I see the status of this bug is Fix released, but what is the fix?
[The comments just say it has been fixed in Jaunty]

I still have the problem in Jaunty with Java freezing Firefox-3.0.11 and
firefox-3.5b4pre (e.g. The Java test page at
www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml causes a freeze). I am using
the most recent Java as far as i know - from about:plugins:

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_13-b03

File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_13

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2009-07-08 Thread Steve Kroon
@Leo: Regarding your query 1: the bug is still there in update notifier.
I basically repeated the process in my comment above today, and got the
same behaviour. [I have the remember this password options
unchecked].

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2009-07-06 Thread Steve Kroon
Update: after reinstalling, I clicked on my Update notifier icon, and
got the bug. I then quit update notifier, and ran KPackageKit from the
menu. There, clicking on apply all available updates gave me a login
prompt. So I've got different behaviour between kpackagekit and
updatenotifier (which seems to be a component of kpackagekit to me).

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2009-07-06 Thread Steve Kroon
I'll followup on Item 1 as soon as the update notifier pops up again (my
system is currently up to date).

As for item 2, I'm still waiting for feedback on the certificate issue I
get when I add the repositories.

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2009-07-03 Thread Steve Kroon
OK. I reproduced the bug, and as with others, I get this error message:

Authentication as an administrative user is required.
The following users qualify as administrative users: skroon
Select user: Failed to obtain authorization for
org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.
Authentification error : org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply : Message did not
receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

Nothing was output to my ~/.xsession-errors , however.

I also ran polkit-auth as below, which didn't seem to have any problem:

skr...@mania:~$ polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update
Attempting to obtain authorization for org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.
Authentication as an administrative user is required.
The following users qualify as administrative users: skroon
Select user: skroon
Password:
Keep this privilege for the session or always? [no/session/always]?
no
Successfully obtained the authorization for
org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.

Finally, this problem went away for some reason on my second try
yesterday, but has since come back. Not sure why.

@James: when adding your repositories above and running apt-get update,
I get the following at the end:

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty Release: The following signatures
couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY
EB6DA76C6591493A
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

(Ironically, it's recommending running the currently running program to
fix the problem).

I'm hesitant to continue before sorting these warnings out.

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2009-06-24 Thread Steve Kroon
OK - I believe this may be the same problem: in Kubuntu's Software
Updates - KDE Control module, when I click on Apply all available
updates, I get the error message You don't have the necessary
privileges to perform this action.

Running sudo aptitude safe-upgrade works fine though.

Running polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update
prompts for a username and password, asks whether it should keep the
privilege, and then outputs Successfully obtained the authorization for
org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.

I still get the same error message in the Software Updates window,
though.

Please let me know if you want any other info.
