[Bug 285517] [NEW] Radeon HD 3300 not recognized

2008-10-18 Thread Steve K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The Radeon HD 3300 device onboard my Asus M3A78-T is not recognized by
the ATI driver in Intrepid. It's working with FGLRX (with it's own set
of bugs).Hopefully it is just a case of a missing device ID?

[Bug 285517] Re: Radeon HD 3300 not recognized

2008-10-18 Thread Steve K
Also, it seems to confuse Intrepid's beta installer. It attempts to
load the ATI driver for the card and the X server just exits repeatedly
and never goes into failsafe mode, essentially breaking the graphical
install on this hardware.

[Bug 150379] Re: Nautilus built-in search doesn't work if tracker is disabled

2007-12-29 Thread Steve K
Nuts. The fix mentioned above only lasted for a few hours - today Nautilus
search is dead again. But I do think that my adventure defines the bug at
hand as a Tracker, not a Nautilus problem.
It may also be useful to know that about the same time these problems started
here, the Amarok collection indexer died - it now loops continually, tying up
system resources and making the program unusable - may or may not be related.

[Bug 150379] Re: Nautilus built-in search doesn't work if tracker is disabled

2007-12-28 Thread Steve K
My Nautilus installation's search feature was dead as a doorknob.
Thanks to this thread, it works again: I uninstalled and purged
Tracker, bounced my terminal just to make sure, then reinstalled Tracker
and its related packages. Bingo: Nautilus search is working correctly
now. I also added a similar comment to Bug 247286 over on Bugzilla -
looks like the same problem.

Tracker was running before I started this repair. I imagine something
was wrong with a config file somewhere.

[Bug 105188] No sound still in Feisty 7.04

2007-04-10 Thread Steve. K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Reported this problem initially as bug 74677.

I am being told that the fix has been released for this bug, but despite
asking how to apply it, no-one has told me. I assume therefore that the
'fix' was in the latest kernel for 7.04. If so, then it doesn't work for
me and so I am filing another bug.

Many thanks.

Do I have to do anything or would the update sort the problem?

[Bug 95887] Touchpad vertical scroll laggy in Herd 5 Feisty

2007-03-25 Thread Steve. K
Public bug reported:

Following a large update yesterday 24/3/07 my touchpad vertical scroll
has become laggy. It moves slower than it used to and only works in
small increments. I have checked this in both Beryl and Metacity, as
well as Firefox, Opera, Nautilus, and OOo Writer, so it does seem like
an issue with the touchcpad rather than an application. I have also
tried booting into an old Kernel but this doesn't seem to make much
difference. Several other people have reported this in the ubuntu
forums.

[Bug 83420] Feisty herd 3 doesn't boot from Live CD

2007-02-05 Thread Steve. K
Public bug reported:

Feisty herd 3 (ubuntu) doesn't load on LiveCD. It just hangs on the boot
splash screen.

Am running a Toshiba Equium L20-197 and using the i386 ISO image.

Tried this by burning the image to a CD and also DVD - the DVD attempt
to load gives some information (since no boot splash image). It gets to
'udevet-event [4780] Run Programme /sbin/modprobe abnormal exit' - the
DVD then stops - then about 20-30 secs later flicks back into life - a
couple of lines of text appear, then it hangs completely with 'etho0
link is not ready'.

Cheers,

[Bug 83420] Re: Feisty herd 3 doesn't boot from Live CD

2007-02-05 Thread Steve. K
Ok, so a strange thing happened. It turned out that I hadn't checked the
integrity of the discs (it was late!). The DVD was fine, but still hung at the
same place; the CD had an error on it so I burned a new copy. This also stopped
at the same series of error messages. I had to split the screen shot into 3 so
I could get the focus on the text- I've attached shot 1 here and the other 2
will follow in add-on messages
Anyway, so it sat there and I decided to try ctrl-alt-F2 (had to do this on a
xubuntu install to kill a process for installing japanese dictionary) and the
system took me to the terminal, beeped, and continued to boot up!
So I managed to get to the desktop - though there was an error about being
unable to start HAL waiting for me. From there I could have a poke about - but
unfortunately couldn't get online, since my wireless card wasn't detected (Edgy
does it fine - its an inbuilt one, so not a USB extra or anything) - although
'lo' was reporting sending and recieving packages (strange since my system is
encrypted, so maybe it was using a neighbours?). Also, couldn't get in to set
up my network since it was telling me that I didn't have permission to
configure system settings. And cicking the hardware box in the control centre
just flashed the box up really quickly before killing it again.
So - a strange experience. Here's shot 1 anyway.

Several hundred times a day is not not that often. It is
a gross malfeature, a major speed bump for non-technical users
and a constant source of irritation.

Sometimes when I click on a jpg file, I can actually see the
dialog change from Open with GQview to ... nothing. It's

A couple of hundred times a day is not not that often. It is
a gross malfeature: A major speed bump for non-technical first
time users (supposedly the target audience for Ubuntu), and a
constant daily irritation for the rest of us.

User to computer: Open jpg files with GQView.

Computer to user: Do you think you f***ing own me?

User to Ubuntu: Hey, this thing is broken.

Ubuntu to user: Tell someone who cares.

[Bug 19101] Re: nautilus's clever anti-hax0r detection is really dumb

2006-12-25 Thread Steve K
Does anyone have a work-around handy, for disabling this entire
security feature?

In my web searches, I find nothing about how to turn it off.
What I do see, are instances of the same error message
reported in numerous forums. The problem is normally
misinterpreted by the local geeks and gurus in these forums,
as an application level problem or (most commonly), a
missing filesystem permission on an executable file. The
real bug looks and sounds too much like deliberate sabotage
to seem possible.

I certainly don't need it, it's nothing but an annoyance to
anyone who pays attention to where the files on his or her
system came from. This feature adds nothing but extra time
and motion to the simplest and most frequently used task on
the desktop. I am seriously thinking about the time/effort
tradeoff in switching from Gnome to KDE on account of it.

Clueless newbies also don't need it, unless someone thinks
it's a good idea to protect them from hypothetical hostile
content by disabling the only file-open method they know
about. (Insert famous quote about unplugged computer
encased in a cube of concrete here.)

:o/

[Bug 76960] Mono crashed when closing Firefox

2006-12-23 Thread Steve. K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mono

After shutting down firefox I got crash report on Mono (don't know what this
is).
Am unable to open the crash report file though (well, can open it but then
AbiWord or whatever editor I try to use to cut and paste it here crashes as
well). If you can tell me how to send you the file then I gladly will,
otherwise seems I'm stuck.

Sorry.

[Bug 74677] No sound in Feisty 7.04

2006-12-06 Thread Steve. K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-live

I have no sound in Feisty 7.04 (for some reason I had to choose 'dont know'
from the menu option since it would recognise 'Feisty 7.04'!!
Anyway - my sound works fine with the headphones so this is a bit strange.
Not sure if this is a bug, but wanted to report it to someone, since I also
have no sound in Edgy 6.10, and nor on the live Cd of Dapper.

Am running a Tecra A8 with intel / Realtek ALS262 soundthing.

All Alsamixer settings are correct - the PC is picking up the modules
etc. (clearly since the headphones work), and I've tried everything in
the wiki-HOWTO on snd-hda-intel stuff.

Was really hoping that Feisty would give me sound - but was not to be!

Best,

Steve

[Bug 74677] Re: No sound in Feisty 7.04

2006-12-06 Thread Steve. K
Sorry - I mean that there is no sound at all from the speakers -
although the headphones work fine. given that its a pain to sit there
with headphones on - to all intents and purposes this means that I
effectively have 'no sound'.

Hope this helps but if you need more details - lspci etc. then please
let me know.
