Installing vlan_1.9-3ubuntu10 solved my vlan interface issues too
(introduced by upgrading from Xubuntu 13.10 to 14.04), thanks Tom!

Re: [Bug 389467] Re: sudo dumpcap will not write output files to ~/

2011-06-14 Thread Sune Bredahl
The more i read about this, the less i like (or understand) the
wireshark implementation/integration in Ubuntu. If you are only using
wireshark for analyzing capture files, then fine. But if you are
actually using these tools for capturing packets, then Ubuntu will not
make your life easier.

No such thing as a "launch wireshark as root" menu item. And if you
try to use the terminal instead (having learned that wireshark as root
is pure evil), then you will discover, by trial and error, that you
cannot really write capture files to your own home folder, even with
sudo. Secure? Sure. User friendly? No.

However, I'm very pleased to read that this can be fixed by running
dpkg-reconfigure, and then adding yourself to the wireshark group, but
this should really be the default behavior.

2011-06-14 Thread Sune Bredahl
Thanks for your explanation on this issue, it certainly seems to be "by
design" but maybe i will contact the upstream people as you suggest.
Other unixes do not seem to share this "sudo wireshark" bug/feature so
it would be nice if Linux played along too.

[Bug 389467] Re: sudo dumpcap will not write output files to ~/

2011-06-13 Thread Sune Bredahl
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: wireshark-common

dumpcap from wireshark-common (wireshark 1.07 release) will not write
its output to ~/ (with sudo).

  $ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test.cap
The file to which the capture would be saved ("/home/sune/test.cap") could
not be opened: Permission denied.

  whereas

  sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /tmp/test.cap
  File: /tmp/test.cap
  Packets: 3

  or even

  sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /home/test.cap
  File: /tmp/test.cap
  Packets: 3

  work fine!

(sudo is needed for packet capturing, so it does not make sense to
invoke dumpcap as a normal user.)

I can replicate this issue on three different ubuntu 9.04 installations
(server x86, desktop x86, desktop x64).

Hope you can take a look at this, thank!

[Bug 389467] Re: sudo dumpcap will not write output files to ~/

2011-06-13 Thread Sune Bredahl
Yes the problem still exists in 11.04:

$ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test.cap
[sudo] password for sune:
The file to which the capture would be saved ("/home/sune/test.cap") could not
be opened: Permission denied.

What DOES work, however, is this:

$ touch ~/test.cap
$ sudo chown root:root ~/test.cap
$ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test.cap

I will run apport-collect, thanks

[Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2011-01-14 Thread Sune Bredahl
I had the same problem in xubuntu 10.10 and the solution was to "sudo
apt-get remove gnome-settings-daemon", not sure why that component is
installed in an xfce environment? I guess this is not a solution for you
guys here though...

Oh yes, I have the dreaded x58 + corei7 + nvidia 470gtx + SSD combo...

2011-01-14 Thread Sune Bredahl
Did a reinstall and my own solution from #11 did not work this time :-(

However I removed gnome-settings-deamon (sudo apt-get remove gnome-
settings-daemon) inspired by comments from bug #649809 and that has
solved the problem!

Not sure why that deamon is needed on XFCE anyway?

[Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-10-17 Thread Sune Bredahl
I have almost the same problem in Xubuntu (Bug #652731) but here it is
"xfsettingd" not running (which means appearance settings cannot be
changed).

However if I boot from the live cd, everything works and xfsettingsd is
running as it should. I use the nvidia non-free driver also, but the bug
persists if i deactivate it so I'm not sure if it is releated.

2010-10-15 Thread Sune Bredahl
Yes i have a core i7 (930) and Nvidia GTX 470.

I wonder if this is a concurrency issue of some sort, eg. xfsettingsd
being loaded too early? This would at least explain why the (slow
booting) live cd does not have this bug on my PC. Anyway the solution
described in #11 has solved the problem for my part.

I just did a fresh reinstall of Xubuntu 10.10 RC, and yes the problem is
that 'xfsettingsd' is not running for some reason. You can fix this by
adding 'xfsettingsd' to your "Application Autostart" group in the xfce 4
settings manager.

I notice now I have something called 'xsettingsd' running in the
background, and if i kill it, the original problem returns i.e. changes
made through xfce4-appearance-settings have no effect. The only remaning
question is why 'xsettingsd' wasn't running beforel but somehow
recovered after I did the python removal thing.

[Bug 652731] Re: Appearance settings do not work in Xubuntu 10.10 RC

2010-10-06 Thread Sune Bredahl
A little update:

Yesterday uninstalled python (apt-get remove python) which turned out to remove
tons of other stuff as well.
After reboot, I now invariably get the "ubuntu running in low graphics mode"
error. But when I do a login in via console, and then run startx, my desktop is
perfecly normal and my "apperance settings" bug is gone! I even get the
hibernate/suspend option back when i logout which was also missing before.

So in effect, it seems I have traded one problem for another, but this is
certainly much better. It's only a minor
nuisance to do the console login + startx myself.

Currently I'm manually reinstalling packages (using "apt-cache rdepends
python") so hopefully I will encounter the package that is the cause of
these problems.

I have updated to the nvidia 260.19.06 drivers (Bug #629910) which seems

xfce appearance settings still do not take effect. The actual xfce
component involved is xfce4-appearance-settings (not xfce-settings-

[Bug 652731] [NEW] Appearance settings do not work in Xubuntu 10.10 RC

2010-09-30 Thread Sune Bredahl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The (xfce4-settings-manager) appearance settings are broken in my
Xubuntu 10.10 RC installation. This impacts all setting in the
"Appearance" GUI (style/icons/Fonts/Settings) - changing any settings
have no effect whatsoever. Also the desktop is very sluggish (may not be
related though). I also had this bug in the beta release. Other settings
in xfce4-settings-manager seem to work fine.

There are no issues when i run directly from the live cd, everything
works fine in that scenario.

Update and correction: browsing using my keyboard does NOT give the
problem (as I wrongly reported). so it relates only to the mouse
interaction on the folder.

[Bug 544433] [NEW] thunar unable to browse folders in "detailed view"

2010-03-22 Thread Sune Bredahl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar

in freshly installed xubuntu 10.04 beta1, i am unable to browse into
subfolders in Thunar if "view as detailed list" is selected.

For example, when i launch Thunar, it opens in say "/" and I am succesfully
able to browse (using mouse or keyboard) into
say "/etc". However if I browse back again to "/", then suddenly it does not
react to mouse-clicking on any folder name.
This issue only relates to "detailed" view - icon and compact view work fine.

Also the right-click folder context menu (open, open in new windows etc)
is lost when this occurs.

In my .xsession-errors i get stuff like:

(Thunar:1339): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_window_type: assertion
`GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

but I cannot tell if it relates to the problem.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: wireshark-common

dumpcap from wireshark-common (wireshark 1.07 release) will not write
its output to ~/ (with sudo).

- $ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test1.cap
+ $ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test.cap
The file to which the capture would be saved ("/home/sune/test.cap") could
not be opened: Permission denied.

  whereas

- sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /tmp/test1.cap
+ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /tmp/test.cap
  File: /tmp/test.cap
  Packets: 3

  or even

- sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /home/test3.cap
+ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /home/test.cap
  File: /tmp/test.cap
  Packets: 3

  work fine!

(sudo is needed for packet capturing, so it does not make sense to
invoke dumpcap as a normal user.)

I can replicate this issue on three different ubuntu 9.04 installations
(server x86, desktop x86, desktop x64).

Hope you can take a look at this, thank!

[Bug 389467] Re: sudo dumpcap will not write output files to ~/

2009-06-19 Thread Sune Bredahl
It may (or may not) be related to this 'tshark' bug reported (and
apparently fixed) in wireshark 0.99 some years ago;

[Bug 389467] [NEW] sudo dumpcap will not write output files to ~/

2009-06-19 Thread Sune Bredahl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wireshark-common

dumpcap from wireshark-common (wireshark 1.07 release) will not write
its output to ~/ (with sudo).

$ sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w ~/test1.cap
The file to which the capture would be saved ("/home/sune/test.cap") could not
be opened: Permission denied.

whereas

sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /tmp/test1.cap
File: /tmp/test.cap
Packets: 3

or even

sudo dumpcap -i eth0 -w /home/test3.cap
File: /tmp/test.cap
Packets: 3

work fine!

(sudo is needed for packet capturing, so it does not make sense to
invoke dumpcap as a normal user.)

I can replicate this issue on three different ubuntu 9.04 installations (server
x86, desktop x86, desktop x64).

Hope you can take a look at this, thank!

/Sune

[Bug 217789] Re: Realtek ALC888 low sound

2009-04-19 Thread Sune Bredahl
I can confirm the issue still exists in Jaunty release candidate (amd64)
which I installed this morning.

I have Abit IP35 Pro board with onboard Realtek ALC888.

Note that only the rear audio jack has very low volume - the front audio
jack has normal volume. However, in my case, the front connector is very
noisy as the mobo audio connector cable picks up static so is is really
not an option for quality audio.
