[Bug 1388957] [NEW] Evolution delays GNOME session quit
Public bug reported: Logging out of a Unity session while Evolution is running blocks log out for approx. a minute. There is no windows decoration, therefore manual closure of Evolution is not possible. Killing the running Evolution process from TTY will lead to an immediate log out. How to reproduce: Login to a session to start Evolution. Wait until there is no more activity in Evolution (that may block application termination). Log out from the session by me-menu or from terminal `gnome-session-quit --logout' What is expected: Evolution should terminate and the login screen should be displayed. What happens instead: The windows decoration disappears on all open windows. No launcher or panel, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. After 1 minute Evolution quits and the login screen appears. This is stock Evolution 3.10.4-0ubuntu2 from 14.04.1 LTS (am64 3.13.0-39-generic) but was present in 12.04 and still is in 14.10 (the latter with intact windows decoration however). [Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion
@Darko: this may lead to problems in non-standard environments??? Excuse me, but ANYONE able to create non-standard environment is probably able to use any ubuntu cd, super grub, system rescue cd, or what ever and get the system online. There are easy to handle bootloaders other than GRUB2 around that we need to take care of during an update. Under no circumstance these should be overwritten thus making automatic installation procedures difficult. The upgrade as it is now is very comfortable in this respect. However for a long-term solution I vote for Erick's idea #3, i.e. leaving Grub where it is during an update. This may need two different operation modes of the installer, one for updates only, and one for fresh installs (or repair). -- Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion
@Erick: sadly, this report is getting more and more off-topic. I doubt any dev will find the time to go through all of this. The overall relevance of this bug is also questionable as almost exclusively people are affected that work for at least months on Ubuntu and are very happy with it. Again, I 'd like to point out that this is neither a bug in grub2 nor in the installer but rather in the way inexperienced users are misled by insufficient help during the grub installation process. The installer simply does what you tell it - so what's buggy about this? Sure it would be nice to not have to tell it anything at all but this may lead to problems in non-standard environments where at least Ubuntu must always be bootable after an upgrade. Those Users that are unable to restore the Windows boot record are to my experience most likely affected by a bug in the Windows repair tools that in rare instances are unable to correctly restore a single byte in the affected boot sector. I do agree however that the issue is there and needs some urgent action. We still see many people every day that are affected and need help from the support forums. As any constructive ideas are missing here I'd like to point again on my suggestion made earlier in bug #571893: Please change the help text from the grub installer so that it really helps the inexperienced and warns from possible side-effects. I do believe this would be sufficient for now. And, at least the issue should be mentioned in the release or upgrade notes. -- Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion
@Erick: Sorry if my point has been misinterpreted. Of course I did not overlook your constructive and very precious ideas in the initial post. I should have written 'further' ideas instead of 'any', sorry for that. However from then on the postings basically come down to me toos and complaints with only minor discussions on the solutions you suggested. Still IMHO, your idea #2 is sure not the best but the the easiest and safest way for a quick solution. Maybe not even the amount of text needs to increased. What about: It is recommeded to install Grub2 to the MBR (e.g. /sda) of the disk where Ubuntu resides. Installing Grub to partitons (e.g. /sda1) is usually not a good idea as it may lead to problems booting other operating systems in a multi-boot environment @Nicolò: Sure, your suggestion is exactly what we expect how it should be handled. However, I'm not shure how fast this could be implemented as it needs changes to the code with further testing needed. -- Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What happens instead: Avahi-daemon discovers new services only after performing a manual restart by typing 'sudo restart avahi-daemon'. Once a discovered service is stopped and thus no longer available on the net it is still resolved with a .local device name to other applications. How to reproduce: 1. Boot the computer without the external local device (here an Apple AirportExpress) running. 2. Switch on the external local device and wait until ping to this device is possible. 3. Avahi does not resolve the .local name. 4. Type 'sudo restart avahi-daemon' in a terminal. 5. The local device will be recognized and a .local name will be resolved. 6. Switch off the device. 7. The .local name will still be resolved from the non-existent device. 8. When typing 'sudo restart avahi-daemon' again, the device disappears. 9. Switch on the external device, and then it will be discovered automatically as should 10. Switch off the external device and unfortunately it is still there. Maybe this bug is also related to bug #116984. To add a suggestion that can be included very quickly and easily and may well be sufficient to unexperienced user: #5: Change the help text from the tickbox when asked where to install grub: It should recommend unexperienced users to keep the default setting rather than mislead users to install GRUB to all of them (Drives a meant but this could easily be misinterpreted to partitions as well). The note at the bottom on partition boot records should be changed to a clear warning that other OSs may not be able to boot if Grub is installed to their boot partition record. [Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid
@Henri: no my problem is not really solved. It appears that I accidentally installed grub in the Windows partition. This eventually messed up the MBR/Partition block. So far we were unable to restore it indicating that some additional problem exists, maybe unrelated to grub. The Grub update would not be able to do anything as it only affects the way how grub is installed during an update (i.e. not asking when grub resides in one partition only). It's definitely not a bug in grub but rather in the way the installer misleads us to install grub in wrong places. -- Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571893 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As from this thread in the german ubuntu forum: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/windows-7-bootet-nach-ubuntu-update-nicht/ there is evidence that this is not really a bug from grub but from the way the installer performs the upgrade. If Grub2 is already installed on your system: * keep the current version of grub rather than choose the maintainer's version. * if you manually install Grub take care not to install grub to the Windows partition. [Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid
I agree, there are more and mroe reports on this bug around. For some people there is a workaround by fixing the MBR with testdisk (as decsribed here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector). However this does not work for me. BTW I can mount the Windows partition from Lucid and data seem to be fine there. The issue came up when performing a network upgrade to Lucid LTS from Karmic on May 1st. Lucid runs fine but other OSs won't boot despite being listet in Grub's menu. I therefore agree that it's not bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570765. @Wetson, @Henri: your're welcome. Unfortunately on my system testdisk says that backup and boot sectors are identical thus refusing to correct the problem. No idea of how this broken MBR found it's way to the backup. I definitely did nothing else before trying testdisk. It seems I need to rebuild the MBR from the Windows Disk now. All users now have PA running properly. -- [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523460 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 523460] [NEW] [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio 1) Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kernel 2.6.31-19-generic GNOME 2.28.1 2) Pulseaudio 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478 3) User1 updates 0.9.21 to 0.9.22 from ubuntu-audio-dev ppa 4) On logon pulseaudio is running fine but exclusively for user1. User2 is getting the following errors: pulseaudio[2030]: protocol-native.c: Denied access to client with invalid authorization data. pulseaudio[2030]: protocol-esound.c: Kicked client with invalid authorization key. When starting pulseaudio manually from a terminal the errors stop and audio is fine until logoff. Re-installing PA 0.9.22 by user2, or deleting ~/.pulse have no effect on this odd behaviour. ** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523460 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 116984] Re: Applications can't connect to avahi-daemon until avahi is restarted once.
Similar or same (?) issue here on Karmic 9.10 am64 using avahi for pulseaudio-streaming to an AirportExpress. Avahi needs a restart of avahi-daemon or restart of network-manager (both works) to resolve the airport.local device. -- Applications can't connect to avahi-daemon until avahi is restarted once. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116984 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
