[Bug 1645015] [NEW] Area select will not save screenshot when invoked via keyboard shortcut

2016-11-26 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

start gnome-screenshot with key combination Ctr+Shift+PrtScr
watch cursor change to section cross

What happens instead:

selected area flashes black
gnome-screenshot will not open

Taking an area screenshot works as expected when invoked from a running
instance of gnome-screenshot.

[Bug 1509559] Re: Lack sensitivity mouse option

2015-12-26 Thread Takkat
Confirming this with using a `Microsoft Wireless Desktop 2000` dongle in
an USB 3.0 port on Ubuntu 15.04.

Fixed it by plugging in a spare wired mouse, or a Logitech dongle. We
can then adjust mouse speed as expected. Settings made there will affect
the MS desktop too.

[Bug 1388957] [NEW] Evolution delays GNOME session quit

2014-11-03 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

Logging out of a Unity session while Evolution is running blocks log out
for approx. a minute. There is no windows decoration, therefore manual
closure of Evolution is not possible. Killing the running Evolution
process from TTY will lead to an immediate log out.

How to reproduce:
Login to a session to start Evolution.
Wait until there is no more activity in Evolution (that may block application
termination).
Log out from the session by me-menu or from terminal `gnome-session-quit
--logout'

What is expected:
Evolution should terminate and the login screen should be displayed.

What happens instead:
The windows decoration disappears on all open windows. No launcher or panel,
mouse and keyboard are unresponsive.
After 1 minute Evolution quits and the login screen appears.

This is stock Evolution 3.10.4-0ubuntu2 from 14.04.1 LTS (am64
3.13.0-39-generic) but was present in 12.04 and still is in 14.10 (the
latter with intact windows decoration however).

[Bug 1320020] Re: [Inspiron 1470, Realtek ALC272, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2014-08-08 Thread Takkat
From above mentioned reports on Ask Ubuntu people reported that
avoiding hibernation or fast-boot of Windows succeeded in resolving the
issue.

It may therefore rather be an issue with inappropriate hardware shut
down from the Windows hibernation process than an issue of the Ubuntu
sound system.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1310845 ***

Thank you for linking to the workaround for disabling suspend.

Please note however that this bug here is not about completely disabling
suspend (we know how to do that). It is all about just disabling the
suspend menuitem in the session indicator for users who should not suspend
accidentally.

Re: [Bug 581350] Re: Cairo-Dock Applets are invisible in openGL mode

2014-01-08 Thread Takkat
Thank you for getting back to this. Unfortunately we switched to Nvidia a
while ago so I will be of little help in further investigating this
ATI-related issue. Sorry for that.

2014/1/8 Christopher M. Penalver christopher.m.penal...@gmail.com

Takkat, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
 /daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
 would not be helpful.

 Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 995235] Re: After a reboot headset does not autoconnect

2012-05-19 Thread Takkat
Autoconnecting operates as expected when the external device is powered
on later, i.e. after a reboot completed. If the device was already
powered on we need a signal (e.g. `Play') from the device to trigger
autoconnection.

This indicates that the scanning and autoconnecting features of Bluez
are fully operational. There is no bug here.

[Bug 995235] [NEW] After a reboot headset does not autoconnect

2012-05-05 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

After a reboot my headset always is `disconnected' until connected
manually by using the gnome-bluetooth panel applet.

How to reproduce

- Pair a Bluetooth headset and connect it sucessfully
- Switch off the device / or unplug the USB adapter
- Switch on the device / or plug in the USB adapter
- Observe that the headset is auto-connected as expected
- Reboot the computer (with plugged in USB adapter and headset turned on)
- Device is recognized but in `disconnected' state

What is expected

- Headsets should auto-connect after a reboot

Additional information: uncommenting `AutoConnect=true' in audio.conf
does not make a difference.

[Bug 686859] Re: Bootloader install failed cannot be closed

We can confirm this with Natty 11.04 amd64 final on /ext4. The
installation stops with failure to install Grub to /sda. The installer
textbox choices e.g. install to /sdb or cancel the installation had no
effect. After a reboot we performed a reinstall with Grub manually set
to /sdb without issues.

[Bug 523460] Re: [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment

2011-04-21 Thread Takkat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 433654 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433654

Unplugging the external speakers from line out and a reboot fixed the
issue here. A simple power off of the external speakers was not
sufficient!

This indicates that at some place unknown to us the hardware information
for external devices attached to the internal sound card may not be
restored correctly for all users. This may lead to problems launching
pulseaudio daemon after login in a multi-user setting.

[Bug 695419] [NEW] [regression] Bluetooth audio devices are not connected

2010-12-29 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

A known Bluetooth headset is not connected any more in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Security and recommended Ubuntu updates were installed last on Dec 22
2010. Before that the device worked as it should.

The device can be browsed using 'sdptool browse MAC' but does not show
up in in the bluetooth-applet drop down menu and is not shown in bold
letters from the properties menu. Scanning for new devices also does not
see the device thus re-pairing is not possible. Connecting the device as
audio sink to PulseAudio fails (device not listed).

By running 10.10 in VirtualBox on the same hardware the headset was
connected as usual, proofing that there is no hardware defect.

[Bug 586229] Re: Avahi services are not updated

2010-10-10 Thread Takkat
MacOS should work fine with Bonjour (which is not Avahi). Thanks @Ivan
for your workaround. That was ok for me too in respect of initial
startup but it does not resolve the IMHO quite serious issue when Avahi
still resolves names of devices that are no longer present. I wonder,
why so few people seem to be affected.

[Bug 586229] Re: Avahi services are not updated

2010-10-10 Thread Takkat
When thinking of filing an upstream ticket I came across these:

http://avahi.org/ticket/280
http://avahi.org/ticket/229

where it is made clear that Avahi cannot see vanishing services if they
don't send a proper good-bye. Won't fix, of course. IMHO however the
default time-out for inactive services to disappear seems to be rather
long.

restart avahi-daemon - even if the device has long gone.

didn't see anything related to this admittedly unrecognised bug.

Same her on Lucid 10.04 LTS. Maybe this is all related to improper
handling updates of available services. My recent report (Bug #586229)

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-06-10 Thread Takkat
@Darko:

this may lead to problems in non-standard environments??? Excuse me,
but ANYONE able to create non-standard environment is probably able to
use any ubuntu cd, super grub, system rescue cd, or what ever and get
the system online.

There are easy to handle bootloaders other than GRUB2 around that we
need to take care of during an update. Under no circumstance these
should be overwritten thus making automatic installation procedures
difficult. The upgrade as it is now is very comfortable in this respect.

However for a long-term solution I vote for Erick's idea #3, i.e.
leaving Grub where it is during an update. This may need two different
operation modes of the installer, one for updates only, and one for
fresh installs (or repair).

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-06-09 Thread Takkat
@Erick: sadly, this report is getting more and more off-topic. I doubt
any dev will find the time to go through all of this. The overall
relevance of this bug is also questionable as almost exclusively
people are affected that work for at least months on Ubuntu and are very
happy with it.

Again, I 'd like to point out that this is neither a bug in grub2 nor in
the installer but rather in the way inexperienced users are misled by
insufficient help during the grub installation process. The installer
simply does what you tell it - so what's buggy about this? Sure it would
be nice to not have to tell it anything at all but this may lead to
problems in non-standard environments where at least Ubuntu must always
be bootable after an upgrade.

Those Users that are unable to restore the Windows boot record are to my
experience most likely affected by a bug in the Windows repair tools
that in rare instances are unable to correctly restore a single byte in
the affected boot sector.

I do agree however that the issue is there and needs some urgent action.
We still see many people every day that are affected and need help from
the support forums.

As any constructive ideas are missing here I'd like to point again on my
suggestion made earlier in bug #571893: Please change the help text from
the grub installer so that it really helps the inexperienced and warns
from possible side-effects. I do believe this would be sufficient for
now. And, at least the issue should be mentioned in the release or
upgrade notes.

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-06-09 Thread Takkat
@Erick: Sorry if my point has been misinterpreted. Of course I did not
overlook your constructive and very precious ideas in the initial post.
I should have written 'further' ideas instead of 'any', sorry for that.
However from then on the postings basically come down to me toos and
complaints with only minor discussions on the solutions you suggested.

Still IMHO, your idea #2 is sure not the best but the the easiest and
safest way for a quick solution. Maybe not even the amount of text needs
to increased. What about: It is recommeded to install Grub2 to the MBR
(e.g. /sda) of the disk where Ubuntu resides. Installing Grub to
partitons (e.g. /sda1) is usually not a good idea as it may lead to
problems booting other operating systems in a multi-boot environment

@Nicolò: Sure, your suggestion is exactly what we expect how it should
be handled. However, I'm not shure how fast this could be implemented as
it needs changes to the code with further testing needed.

[Bug 586229] [NEW] Avahi services are not updated

2010-05-27 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour:

Avahi-daemon discovers services when they become available in the net.
When a service stops it is removed from the list of services and .local
devices are no longer resolved by avahi.

What happens instead:

Avahi-daemon discovers new services only after performing a manual
restart by typing 'sudo restart avahi-daemon'. Once a discovered service
is stopped and thus no longer available on the net it is still resolved
with a .local device name to other applications.

How to reproduce:

1. Boot the computer without the external local device (here an Apple
AirportExpress) running.
2. Switch on the external local device and wait until ping to this device is
possible.
3. Avahi does not resolve the .local name.
4. Type 'sudo restart avahi-daemon' in a terminal.
5. The local device will be recognized and a .local name will be resolved.
6. Switch off the device.
7. The .local name will still be resolved from the non-existent device.
8. When typing 'sudo restart avahi-daemon' again, the device disappears.
9. Switch on the external device, and then it will be discovered automatically
as should
10. Switch off the external device and unfortunately it is still there.

Maybe this bug is also related to bug #116984.

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-05-08 Thread Takkat
To add a suggestion that can be included very quickly and easily and may
well be sufficient to unexperienced user:

#5: Change the help text from the tickbox when asked where to install
grub:

It should recommend unexperienced users to keep the default setting
rather than mislead users to install GRUB to all of them (Drives a
meant but this could easily be misinterpreted to partitions as well).
The note at the bottom on partition boot records should be changed to a
clear warning that other OSs may not be able to boot if Grub is
installed to their boot partition record. I would suggest someting like
In dual or multi boot installations make sure to NOT install Grub to
your Windows or other OSs boot partition.

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-06 Thread Takkat
@Henri: no my problem is not really solved. It appears that I
accidentally installed grub in the Windows partition. This eventually
messed up the MBR/Partition block. So far we were unable to restore it
indicating that some additional problem exists, maybe unrelated to grub.
The Grub update would not be able to do anything as it only affects the
way how grub is installed during an update (i.e. not asking when grub
resides in one partition only). It's definitely not a bug in grub but
rather in the way the installer misleads us to install grub in wrong
places.

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-05 Thread Takkat
As from this thread in the german ubuntu forum:
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/windows-7-bootet-nach-ubuntu-update-nicht/
there is evidence that this is not really a bug from grub but from the way the
installer performs the upgrade.

If Grub2 is already installed on your system:
 * keep the current version of grub rather than choose the maintainer's
version.
 * if you manually install Grub take care not to install grub to the Windows
partition. In that case Windows will fail to start.

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-02 Thread Takkat
I agree, there are more and mroe reports on this bug around. For some
people there is a workaround by fixing the MBR with testdisk (as
decsribed here:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector).
However this does not work for me. BTW I can mount the Windows partition
from Lucid and data seem to be fine there.

The issue came up when performing a network upgrade to Lucid LTS from
Karmic on May 1st. Lucid runs fine but other OSs won't boot despite
being listet in Grub's menu. I therefore agree that it's not bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570765.

I also attach my grub.cfg for comparison.

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-02 Thread Takkat
@Wetson, @Henri: your're welcome.

Unfortunately on my system testdisk says that backup and boot sectors
are identical thus refusing to correct the problem. No idea of how this
broken MBR found it's way to the backup. I definitely did nothing else
before trying testdisk. It seems I need to rebuild the MBR from the
Windows Disk now.

As Henri pointed out this bug should be of great concern to the
developers. It was always a great difference to Windows that Ubuntu
respects other OSs.

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-02 Thread Takkat
To add to troubles: Fixing the MBR using bootfix from the Windows-CD
resulted in a totally corrupted partition table. Too bad as /home was on
the same hard disk. Luckily using testdisk I was able to restore the
partitions.

However Windows still won't boot from GRUB2.

@ Daniel T Chen: Thank you for linking to [bug:433654].

Maybe there are reasons that there is a different issue here:

 * starting ''pulseaudio'' after gdm works fine even when other users are
logged in
 * Igor's workaround (removing 'Use audio device' for all users) doesn't work
here
 * we never had problems before updating to 0.9.22
 * problem started the minute we updated
 * Before that sound was always fine for all users (even when multiple users
are logged in)

[Bug 523460] Re: [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment

2010-02-19 Thread Takkat
Still, when user1 logs in first after reboot, user2 will not have PA
services automatically (even after logoff of user1).

Only when user2 logs in first, then for both users PA runs as expected.

Any idea of how to fix this?

Hmm, ConsoleKit. Good idea, thank you. Didn't think of it as usually
only one user at a time was logged in here.

Booting with user2 first (instead of user1 that usually starts work on
this machine) made the trick. All users now have PA running properly.

[Bug 523460] [NEW] [regression] Pulseaudio 0.9.22 needs to be started manually in a multi-user environment

2010-02-17 Thread Takkat
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

1)
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kernel 2.6.31-19-generic
GNOME 2.28.1

2)
Pulseaudio 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478

3)
User1 updates 0.9.21 to 0.9.22 from ubuntu-audio-dev ppa

4)
On logon pulseaudio is running fine but exclusively for user1.
User2 is getting the following errors:

pulseaudio[2030]: protocol-native.c: Denied access to client with invalid
authorization data.
pulseaudio[2030]: protocol-esound.c: Kicked client with invalid authorization
key.

When starting pulseaudio manually from a terminal the errors stop and
audio is fine until logoff.

Re-installing PA 0.9.22 by user2, or deleting ~/.pulse have no effect on
this odd behaviour.

Similar or same (?) issue here on Karmic 9.10 am64 using avahi for

Avahi needs a restart of avahi-daemon or restart of network-manager
