[Bug 1613317] [NEW] Unable to upgrade to 16.04 Xenial Xerus, upgrade process rejected on "unable to disable sources" or similar.

2016-08-15 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

I was prompted with a request to upgrade to 16.04 from 14.04, and I
agreed. It downloaded the files for step 1, and then failed on the
second listed step. The failure message suggested filing a bug against
the release upgrader via `ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core` and I
did, and here we are.

[Bug 1417751] [NEW] Frequent hard-drive writes, perhaps 2 every second.

2015-02-03 Thread Tchalvak
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 607560 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607560

Public bug reported:

Recently multiple hard-drive writes started happening on a continuous
basis, even while my desktop is just sitting idle and not in use.
Running sudo iotop gives frequent writes multiple times a second
(perhaps 2 per second on average).

Running sudo iotop -obtqqq for 30 seconds or so gives the following
frequent offenders:

[Bug 949468] Re: Right click paste menu item is greyed out

Hi, while this bug is mentioned in the linked duplicate bug, the
behaviors described in the main body of the bug are different. I don't
know whether that merits keeping this open, but it's certainly confusing
to have a duplicate that involves completely different behavior,
especially since that duplicate is supposedly expired.

[Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken

2012-10-18 Thread Tchalvak
I made a screencast of this bug in action here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggZLUY4JgHEfeature=youtu.be

Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Here is my full ubuntu and nautilus version info.
cat /proc/version
cat /etc/issue
uname -a
Linux version 3.2.0-31-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.6.3

x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 3.4.2

This issue also occurs with the rename right-click option, which appears
greyed out as if the option is disabled, though renaming is still possible. I
just tested closing all nautilus windows to try to restart nautilus, and the
problem is gone for now once I do that.

[Bug 979285] [NEW] Unity in Oneiric Gedit does not let gedit act as active, causes opening of new documents when trying to return to gedit window.

2012-04-11 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Oneiric, I am running gedit.

Version:
cat /proc/version
cat /etc/issue
uname -a
Linux version 3.0.0-17-generic (buildd@roseapple) (gcc version 4.6.1

Set up:
Open gedit
Create/edit some files
Have multiple file tabs open in a single session of gedit

Switch to firefox
Want to switch back to gedit using the unity left sidebar

Expected behavior:
Gedit icon in unity sidebar should have active triangle on it's left.
Clicking gedit should show the last text document that I was working on.

Actual, buggy behavior:
Gedit icon in unity sidebar does not have an active triangle near it.
Clicking on the gedit icon successfully opens the active, existing window of
gedit, but it also opens a new tab with an untitled document, moving the focus
away from the tab with the document that was actually in the process of being
edited before switching windows.

This makes it very hard to continue editing when switching back to the
gedit window is so disruptive.

[Bug 701179] [NEW] Rythmbox icon does not open menu correctly from notification bar in Ubuntu 10.10

2011-01-10 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I click the rhythmbox icon in the notification bar, instead of
showing the useful play/next/previous, quit options in a dropdown, it
shows a uselessly shortened menu with no menu text.

Essentially, a left-click only highlights the notification icon and
displays a broken shortened dropdown menu. Right click works as normal.

This also means that:
When you open the rythmbox application, it just shows as the notification icon,
which is unusable.
When you close the rythmbox application it minimizes to the notification bar
instead of actually closing, rendering it unusable.

The only workaround is to open rythmbox twice for force access to the
actual window.

[Bug 574154] Re: Lost panel in NBR after 10.04 upgrade

2010-08-10 Thread Tchalvak
Apart from the issue with the gnome-panel, which I don't have, I have
the same symptoms after an upgrade to 10.04. The windows don't maximize
or minimize, and the chrome containing the close/minimize/maximize is
unavailable. Holding down alt to try to move a window fails to work,
the window switcher app doesn't register any windows being open, and
changing focus by clicking on a window does not move it to the top.

Changing visual effects to a higher level and back down brings the
window chrome back, for at least the duration of a single reboot.

[Bug 282323] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-03-16 Thread Tchalvak
I believe that apport files don't get attached unless you create the bug
report as a new bug, at which point it automatically attaches all the
relevant files.

More to the point, my experience with reporting any bugs here on launchpad is:
Report bug with information.
Someone comes along and asks you to do a backtrace on a bug crash that already
occurred.
Someone then comes along and marks the bug as invalid for lacking information.

Conclusion:
According to the bug maintainers, there's essentially no point in apport bug
reporting unless you jump through the complicated hoops of doing a backtrace as
well. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace
As far as I can tell, no-one even makes use of posted apport bug information,
they always request Backtraces, implying that even if you have apport report a
bug... ...you would then have to make that crash reoccur -while actively
running a backtrace program- before anyone is going to even look at it.

[Bug 325266] Re: Firefox does not set cookies for http://localhost

2009-02-23 Thread Tchalvak
Yeah, just spent a long, long while debugging this problem to try to
allow local webdevelopment (that localhost address totally screws over
cookies) on firefox.

I'm now running firefox 3.0.6 in intrepid ibex, does anyone know of a
workaround to fix this issue? Force upgrade to a newer FF version
somehow? Modify a firefox conf file? Modify the host file somehow?

I'm able to use 127.0.0.1 as a workaround for now, but I'd prefer to
have it all fully working if there's already an upgrade or file-editing
solution available out there.

[Bug 332102] [NEW] Upgrade to Jaunty Alpha 4 killed display/resolution settings, required reconfiguration before desktop was reachable.

2009-02-20 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I ran the upgrade to Jaunty Alpha 4, new features came up like the
notification-daemon, but when I restarted, my X configuration on this
Dell dimension C521 with a 22 inch LG monitor using the restricted
Nvidia Driver (I believe) was improperly configured. On startup, a
window popped up on an otherwise black screen saying something like Your
screen configuration has been changed to a low resolution.

I had to fallback to a recovery kernel and choose the option to
reconfigure display settings or the like in order to even get the
desktop to load properly, which led to it currently displaying at
800x600 resolution.

As for the nvidia driver, there doesn't seem to be an option to enable
that driver choice again in the system preferences or administration for
jaunty.

As for the nvidia driver, there doesn't seem to be an option to enable
that driver choice again in the system preferences or administration for
  jaunty.

[Bug 130786] Re: [gutsy] NetworkManager Feature Request - manually trigger ssid scan

2009-02-18 Thread Tchalvak
The latest developer comment about slow rescans is as follows:

Comment #8 from Dan Williams(NetworkManager developer, points: 18)
2008-01-23 22:31 UTC [reply]

r3262 of the stable branch fixes some deficiencies of the scan algorithm. NM
will scan every 20 seconds for 2 minutes, then bump the scan interval up every
120 seconds thereafter. If the device is deactivated, NM will bump the scan
interval back to 20 seconds for 2 minutes, then up to 120 seconds thereafter.
If the user interacts with the NM applet, NM will bump the scan interval back
to 20 seconds, and immediately scan if no scan was done in the past 20 seconds.
This should fix many of the complaints about the speed of updating.

The other issue might be the driver; some drivers (especially mac80211 based
ones in recent kernels like ipw4965) are still buggy and don't report complete
scan results when asked to scan. You can test this by executing (as root)
/sbin/iwlist wlan interface scan and seeing how many APs you get back, and
comparing that against how many you expect to get back. If the driver is
broken, then NM certainly isn't going to work very well.

I think that those changes are probably a great solution to the issue,
so I've asked which version of NetworkManager includes those changes,
and will make note of that here when I get a response.

[Bug 130786] Re: [gutsy] NetworkManager Feature Request - manually trigger ssid scan

2009-02-08 Thread Tchalvak
Official gnome documentation says that simply clicking the network
manager applet should cause a rescan, but that often does not occur
(often after returning from suspend state), so I think that may be a
true bug that the upstream developers might actually want to fix.

[Bug 192270] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()

2009-01-15 Thread Tchalvak
I've been using Flash 10 since the moment it became available, which I
think was even before Intrepid, so I don't think that this problem is
solved simply by 10 (I'm using flashplugin-nonfree:
10.0.15.3ubuntu1~intrepid1 and nspluginwrapper: 1.1.2-0ubuntu1 and the
problem has occurred more than once for me in that time). Now I'm
waiting for it to occur again with the debug symbols package installed
to lend more details to this bug, so I'd like to keep it open a bit
longer.

I believe that I've found the source of this in a firefox extension
(autoHideStatusBar) which does something weird like use an extra
(usually invisible) firefox window to work. That'll teach me not to
file bugs that involve firefox while I still have extensions enabled for
it.

[Bug 315852] [NEW] Multiple firefox icons in compiz window managing plugins when only one firefox window is open.

2009-01-10 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

While using firefox with compiz running, plugins like scale and ring switcher,
which show window thumbnails and window icons for open windows, will show
multiple entries for firefox, when there is only one firefox window open.
Only one of these windows will have a thumbnail, and selecting one of the icons
for windows will access the main firefox window again, leaving the other
firefox icons still visible in scale and ring switcher, and unable to be closed
(presumably) without closing the main firefox window.

This will often happen after firefox has opened subwindows like the
downloads window or add-ons window, but persist even after those
subwindows have been closed.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-18 Thread Tchalvak
This is all because the ability to unsecure and secure individual items
living in keyrings is not granular enough/not available. Wireless
passwords are a security non-issue, mine is: kurogane. Wireless
passwords (and quite likely other such keyring-ed passwords) need to be
easily passed to an unsecured category so that constant, daily
connections to a wireless network do not require inputting a password
each and every single time.

In a related accessibility problem, with a dark theme it fails to change the
text of dropdown menus (all the other chrome pretty much seems to work) the
light colored text suggested by the system. As a result, you get dark
dropdowns with dark text when using a dark theme (in ubuntu 8.10, Gnome 2.24,

[Bug 220263] Re: Bad Firefox integration with dark themes

2008-12-12 Thread Tchalvak
I added a more appropriate firefox/mozilla bug report to this launchpad entry:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=437366
Which seems to describe not only the exact problem that I've detailed in the
png image above, but also they've been looking at possible solutions, and it's
had comments from people looking to fix the problem within the last year so
there's probably the place to make a comment if you've got one.
