That is failing with 4.17.0-9, the kernel is cosmic, as well. Does that
contain that same unprivileged-mknod change?

Thanks.

The number of processes (in systemd, tasks).

The command below works for me.

Now, should we change the default on our test systems? Running under
systemd-run does not look like a good option.

[Bug 1789436] [NEW] pmtu.sh fails on 4.18 kernel

2018-08-28 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

pmtu.sh is a network selftest that was introduced on 4.17. It is
currently failing on 4.18. After revert of ccd740cbc6 "vti6: Add pmtu
handling to vti6_xmit.", it passes.

The fail is in the nature of holding netdevices refcounts, so some
network operations start hanging, including the loading and removal of
network modules.

[Bug 1788603] Re: libvirt fails with failure to open mount namespace

2018-08-23 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
So, investigated this into an apparmor difference between 4.17 and 4.18.
This is due to commit 338d0be437ef10e247a35aed83dbab182cf406a2
("apparmor: fix ptrace read check").

libvirtd here is using only trace, and not read. The patch below for
libvirtd apparmor policy fixes it for me.

[Bug 1788603] [NEW] libvirt fails with failure to open mount namespace

2018-08-23 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

$ virsh start cosmic-i386
error: Failed to start domain cosmic-i386
error: internal error: child reported: Kernel does not provide mount namespace:
Permission denied

Happens with 4.18 only, 4.17 is fine.

27013 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/proc/27012/ns/mnt", O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES
(Permission denied)

Opening a self or parent mount namespace works fine as tested with cat
/proc/self/ns/mnt and cat /proc/self/$$/mnt. Still investigating.

Just manually giving acpi_rsdp parameter to kexec will make it work, so
it should be automatically given despite the xloadflags not being
present in bzImage.

[Bug 1787596] [NEW] kexec can't give acpi_rsdp parameter to efi boot

2018-08-17 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

When doing kexec on trusty, it will look for the xloadflags on the
bzImage, but won't find it on trusty kernels. That will break kexec on
EFI systems, requiring acpi_rsdp parameter to be given manually.

[Bug 1765660] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 [ briggs ]: "ipcs" command fails with error "invalid structure member offset" in crash prompt.

2018-08-07 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- Some analysis won't be possible on new kernels (hwe-edge on xenial, for
example; or the standard bionic kernel).
+ Some analysis won't be possible on new kernels. In this case, ipcs command
could not be used with the bionic GA kernel on ppc64le.

  [Test Case]
The ipcs command has been run after the fix was applied to crash, on a live
amd64 system, with success.

  [Regression Potential]
- Analysis of crashed kernels will require that the crash file be moved to a
system where crash doesn't have the regression. The patch, however, should
touch only the broken command, and has been tested.
+ New crash versions may have bugs and some commands not work with older
kernels. The smoke test helps a little, but more testing may be desirable.
+
+ In case of regressions, analysis of kernel dumps will require that the
+ crash file be moved to a system where crash doesn't have the regression.
+ But live analysis won't be possible in that case.

[Bug 1785686] Re: makedumpfile not able to use compression in trusty kernel 3.13 (fallback to 'cp')

2018-08-07 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
For the record, Guilherme and I concluded that when dumping a kexec
kernel, there may be leftover memory from the previous kernel which
causes the dump to be corrupted. That was after I ran some tests that
showed that when booting a 3.13.0-137, kexecing a 3.13.0-85, then
dumping, the dump would contain 3.13.0-137 versions. And Guilherme
confirmed that kexec was used to boot kernels once in a while during the
tests.

As the test results from Guilherme include boots with kexec and without
it, and the results were not consistent, the suggestion is that multiple
dumps be taken only when cold booting a 3.13 kernel, using makedumpfile
shipped from trusty-updates. And that those be verified with crash.

Cascardo.

This was about analyzing a 4.13 kernel on xenial, which meant a linux-

Can you verify the fix with a linux-hwe kernel?

[Bug 1785686] Re: makedumpfile not able to use compression in trusty kernel 3.13 (fallback to 'cp')

2018-08-07 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
I managed to create successful compressed dumps with trusty makedumpfile
Version: 1.5.5-2ubuntu1.6, with both a linux-3.13.0-137 and a
linux-3.13.0-85. That was on an amd64 kvm system.

So, this tells me this is system dependent, and we need more information
on its configuration, and all the help and data we can gather to debug
this, as it's likely we won't be able to easily reproduce it.

[Bug 1765660] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 [ briggs ]: "ipcs" command fails with error "invalid structure member offset" in crash prompt.

2018-08-07 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Sorry about the lying in the regression potential. It probably referred
to a previous backport attempt, that only applied the respective patch.
As we discussed a few months ago, kexec/kdump/crash would be backported
because of their relationship with the linux package, and its siblings
linux-lts, linux-hwe, etc. That doesn't mean we shouldn't or can't test
the packages more thoroughly. That's why I introduced ADT support to
kdump, and would like to work on more testing for those packages. Right
now, I can do more manual testing for this, and add my results to the
bug.

Thanks for bringing this up.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1785211] [NEW] Cosmic update to 4.17.12 stable release

2018-08-03 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.17.12 upstream stable
patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
   kernel as well.

[Bug 1783877] Re: ltp-syscalls: sgid inheritance for non-directories behavior changed

2018-08-02 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
So, this won't be "fixed" in the kernel, as it has security
implications.

The ltp test has been fixed to ignore this specific behavior. It has
been committed already to ltp, so closing on the test side as well.

3c87ef2961dedb10d1f674c6a530e00dbab8ec1b ("open|creat: skip S_ISGID
check on files created by non-group members") is the ltp commit.

[Bug 1765660] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 [ briggs ]: "ipcs" command fails with error "invalid structure member offset" in crash prompt.

2018-08-02 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Okay, so Manoj was confused as he looked into a linux commit, while we
are talking about crash here. That explains the confusion. On the IBM
side, it seems to have been closed either because the fix has already
landed on cosmic, or because of the ppa test.

Cascardo.

[Bug 1765660] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 [ briggs ]: "ipcs" command fails with error "invalid structure member offset" in crash prompt.

2018-08-02 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Yeah, this doesn't sound right. Bionic has 7.2.1-1, while the fix has
been applied to 7.2.2-1. The verification mentioned on comment #7 was
against a ppa.

We can't ask IBM to properly verify it on bionic until we get this
package on -proposed. Let me move the task back to In Progress.

Thanks.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1778844] Re: ISST-LTE:PNV:Ubuntu180401:Witherspoon:woo: After triggering crash, kdump is not working and system enters into initramfs state

2018-07-27 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Ah, I see what you meant about the PHB. The two new attached logs are
not at all similar to the original ones, maybe pointing to an unrelated
problem.

As for the sosreport, the /sys/ directory is missing almost everything
that I would need to debug this. So, I need any other form of collecting
/sys/. Maybe just tar czf lp1778844_sys.tar.gz /sys/.

Cascardo.

[Bug 1778844] Re: ISST-LTE:PNV:Ubuntu180401:Witherspoon:woo: After triggering crash, kdump is not working and system enters into initramfs state

2018-07-27 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Hi, Hari.

The sosreport should be enough. I sent that message without an updated
view of the bug, so did not notice the attachments. They came on the
same day I asked. Just realized now that they are present. Let me look
at them.

Now, if kdump works with MODULES=most, then the PHB initialization could
require a module that is not in the initramfs. I know some Intel systems
require their vmd module that adds a new PCI domain. Is there some new
pci host module these days on these new Power systems?

Regards.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1783881] [NEW] ltp-syscalls: msgstress03 fails because systemd limits number of processes

2018-07-26 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

As systemd limits the number of processes, this test will fail because
it can't fork enough processes. That is limited to when the test is run
after logging as user 1000, then running sudo. I guess that logging as
root may not cause this to happen.

[Bug 1783877] [NEW] ltp-syscalls: sgid inheritance for non-directories behavior changed

2018-07-26 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

ltp syscalls open10 and and creat08 try to create an sgid executable
file inside a sgid directory owned by a group whose members do not
include the process user.

That used to work up to commit 0fa3ecd87848c9c93c2c828ef4c3a8ca36ce46c7
("Fix up non-directory creation in SGID directories").

This was backported to 4.17.9 and so affects the current kernel in
cosmic proposed, and breaks such ltp tests.

This affects only ppc64el. My guess is the reason is the page size. In

[Bug 1783201] [NEW] Cosmic update to 4.17.9 stable release

2018-07-23 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.17.9 upstream stable
patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
   kernel as well.

   git://git.kernel.org/

TEST CASE: TBD

The following patches from the 4.17.9 stable release shall be
applied:

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1778844] Re: ISST-LTE:PNV:Ubuntu180401:Witherspoon:woo: After triggering crash, kdump is not working and system enters into initramfs state

2018-07-20 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
I have managed to test kdump and initramfs with MODULES=dep on an
emulated nvme, using qemu. Both worked just fine. The sysfs tree seems
reasonable too, in respect to how initramfs finds the necessary modules.

So, I would really need the specific details on that failure case, that
is, the sysfs tree and all the rest I requested in the previous message.

Thank you.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1778844] Re: ISST-LTE:PNV:Ubuntu180401:Witherspoon:woo: After triggering crash, kdump is not working and system enters into initramfs state

2018-07-16 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
As we use MODULES=dep for kdump initrd, that might fail to include the
proper modules. It would be a bug on initramfs-tools-core.

Can you change /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf to have MODULES=dep
instead of MODULES=most and run mkinitramfs -o /tmp/initrd.img `uname
-r`, then send me output?

Also, I need the data usually collected for kernel bugs. /sys/ at least
comes to mind, but also complete dmesg after normal boot and some other
important files to detect root mountpoint, like /etc/fstab,
/proc/cmdline and /proc/mounts.

Thank you.
Cascardo.

There are quite a few commits (all available upstream) that are needed for
crash tool to work fine. I think the right thing to do here would be to use
the latest crash tool version 7.2.0 to go with the kernel update. Also, the
below commit would be needed on top of 7.2.0 crash utility:

there is more progress on that.

[Bug 1746088] Re: [Ubuntu 16.04.4] Unable to analyze the vmcore generated by kdump on 4.13.0-26-generic kernel

2018-06-19 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
I have been working on the backport for this to xenial, but in order to
do so, we are taking care of some build failures on the latest version
that we are going to add to cosmic. I'll update when there is more
progress on that.

Regards.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1776967] Re: glibc pkeys test fail on powerpc

2018-06-15 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Florian, thanks for the heads-up and for pursuing this. I read some of
the links pointed out in that bug, and I see there is much to improve
yet, and 4.17 might not have the best pkeys story for powerpc. Maybe we
should just disable that test in the meantime.

About the particular problem we saw here in our case:

FAIL: misc/tst-pkey
original exit status 1
error: ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/tst-pkey.c:200: pkey_alloc: No space left on
device
error: 1 test failures

Running this on a system I got hold onto, I got the same issue.

Likely, this is due to pkey_disabled from
arch/powerpc/include/asm/pkeys.h:mm_pkey_alloc, which would be the case
as in arch/powerpc/mm/pkeys.c:pkey_initialize:

if (!pkey_mmu_enabled() || radix_enabled() || !pkeys_total)
static_branch_enable(_disabled);
else
static_branch_disable(_disabled);

I don't think EINVAL should be returned instead. Returning ENOSPC in
such a case seems reasonable, and any pkey code should be able to handle
that case. So, one more thing to fixup in the tests expectations.

Cascardo.

[Bug 1772024] Re: linux 4.13.0-42.47 ADT test failure with linux 4.13.0-42.47 (nbd-smoke-test)

2018-06-14 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ nbd-server will crash when a client connects to it, if it was started without
a server name. It may also leak fds if fork fails.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Running the server with an empty config file and an image on the command
line, and then starting a local client will crash the server. After the fix, it
doesn't crash anymore, and a filesystem may be created and used after that.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The fix also implies a small package change, to use quilt. It has built just
fine and many tests have been run on top of those packages and no failure
seemed to be the result of those userspace changes, but known failures in the
kernel driver.
