[Bug 238859] Re: Can't switch keyboard layout using java applications

2009-04-25 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Found problem with SCIM caused problem with me.
As I don't need Japanese input for netbeans I disabled by adding the following
line in the netbeans starter script:
---
export XMODIFIERS=''
---
If you use SCIM, you can easy find with search the other bug reports with more
details.
With this I don't need AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit any more.

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2009-04-11 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
I had a little time and could finally try the patches:
Good news! It works!

Additionally:
* I compiled a single patch out of the 4 patches, that directy apply with
current stable Ubuntu (intrepid) package 1.5.2
* created a pre-build debian package from latest Ubuntu source package
(Intrepid)

Just check it out here:
http://linux.pengin.de/#keyboard

It would be really cool if this could be added to the standard package.
Hope Bryce can pick it up.

Have fun!

You find this here:

I assume these patches will fix the problem, BUT have not tried it and
as I`m without access to my linux box the next 2 week, it would be great
somebody here facing the problem could give it a try.

[Bug 288859] Re: Need Pipe-A quirk for 855 and earlier chipsets (like 1014:0513)

2009-01-06 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
I wonder my XV Saturation / Contrast could be integrated into the next version
of the Ubuntu Intel driver package.
Got several reports this helps. So far I have provided pre-compiled packages
beside the source patch (on http://linux.pengin.de/#xvattr ), but I'm now
running on Intrepid and I get asked for Hardy packages.

See this discussion:

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2008-11-23 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
I currently don't have access to my Linux box, but got interesting reply from
Peter Hutterer:

On Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:52:10PM +0900, Thomas Fritzsche wrote:
after upgrading to xserver 1.5.2 using the new evdev + hal I'm observing
that I receive an additional layout group.
The gnome keyboard indicator is showing this as ?? and using the
 libxklavier test program I get:

The German and Japanese Layout-Group is in my setup, but the system added an
additional Group 0 with name -??
I already read though your blog (http://who-t.blogspot.com/), but could not
find anything explaining such a odd behaviour.

I added a lot of description and logfiles to a bug report at this link:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/283128

I'm not using Autologin (that was causing trouble in other case). There are
a lot of devices coming up with evdev/hal, but all have de,jp assigned
 (lshal).
What could causing such a problem? What can I do to avoid this problem?

Sounds similar to 14373 (fixed with commit ae986d1c73d), and could have a
similar cause.

Especially comment 18 hints at that
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/283128/comments/18

Do you have the above commit in your tree?
Is there a difference between the output of xkbcomp -xkb :0 - before and
after it occurs?

Cheers,
 Peter

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2008-11-22 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
I did a little bit more testing:
* this additional ?? layout group first to be not displayed after restart, if
I click on the keyboard indicator I just get the expected layouts. However the
moment I press first key the system seems to add this layout ?!
* For test purpose I added the extra keyboad/mouse section to the xorg.conf,
but this time with:
  Option AutoAddDevicesno
in the ServerLayout section. Beside the fast this seems to mix up the special
character (like volume up/down etc.).
The issue doesn`t happen without hal detection.
* I enhanced the HAL fdi file mentioned in about bug:
...
  device
match key=info.product contains=Video Bus
  remove key=input.x11_driver/
  remove key=info.subsystem/
  remove key=input.device/
  remove key=info.category/
/match
  /device

This seems to avoid a video device is added as keyboard, but other than this
there seems to be no improvement ??-layout group still appears.

I wonder about the patches mentioned here from Peter Hutterer:

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2008-11-21 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Here some observations and I'm wondering you guys have the same:

* Even I get these strange layouts with ?? I can still switch the keyboard
via keyboard (in my case ALT-SHIFT)
* In the first seconds after start I have sometimes sometimes everything seems
to be fine (no ?? and short time later I suddenly have ?? in the keyboard
indicator.
* If I use the command:
setxkbmap de,jp -variant nodeadkeys -option grp:alt_shift_toggle
(my setting is for German/Japanese keyboard)
I can restore the settings (means ?? layout disappears.
* If I add this comment in System-Settings-Sessions it does not help (after
restart I get ?? layout. If I start terminal and issue this command manual it
work.

My impression:
-- This event causing ?? layout happens a view seconds after gnome start.
That's why the session setxkbmod is not effective.
If could be these new HAL hardware detection is responsible, but I'm not sure
how to turn this off... using a keyboad section in xorg.conf file was not
helpful.
But it looks like a kind of overwriting situation.

I checked a little the program source and it looks like:
* gnome-applets: package contains this keyboard indicator
* libgnomekbd: is called by gnome-applets
* libxklavier-3.7: is called by libgnomekbd
and in libxklavier are the direct calls to get keyboad information.

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2008-11-21 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
More research:
I installed and compiled source package of libxklavier:
apt-src install libxklavier
apt-src build libxklavier

in the subfolder libxklavier-3.7/tests I now get test_config and
test_monitor some tools to see a little whats going on.

If I run test_config -g the issue get's fixed, but I can see in the log there
is a
3rd layout group (beside the desired 2 (German / Japanese).
I attached the output.

I run this again (now issue is fixed and log shows only 2 layout
groups).

Additionaly I run this tool on Failesafe session (without gnome) and I get 3
(!!) layout groups.
This seems to indicate it's not gnome setup but something with the initial
X-keyboad setup.
I don't know what's wrong configured here, but somehow this settings seem to
overwrite.
My Xorg.conf currently doesn't contain keyboard config.
/etc/default/console-setup
[..]
XKBMODEL=pc105
XKBLAYOUT=de,jp
XKBVARIANT=nodeadkeys

XKBOPTIONS=lv3:ralt_switch
[..]
(setting this manual with setxkbmap seems to fix this as written above, so I
guess it's fine).

This is a QWETY keyboard but with German layout I use as QWERTZ.

2008-11-01 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
I have the same issue here after upgrade to Intrepid (8.10) using German and
Japanese keyboard layout (Thinkpad T61).
After X restart I suddenly have extra layout showing by keyboard indicator with
text ??.
I can open the keyboard indicator applet doing some dummy changes and the
additional layout disappears (until next x-start etc.)

Didn't found anything but there are several other layout problems out currently:

Hi Simon,
thanks for the output. I can see you have a different chipset and/or driver in
use, e.g. the max saturation value should be 1023 if it's the same
driver/chip but in your case it's 8191. Sorry this patch can't work then.

2008-06-20 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
@Conn: I tried this, but I can't reproduce it. With me it stays constant
on 511 after the first call.

[Bug 238859] [NEW] Can't switch keyboard layout using java applications

2008-06-10 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Public bug reported:

I'm working in international environment German/Japanese and need to
switch the keyboard layout during application usage (simply my keyboard
doesn't provide all necessary keys in one layout). I'm using the gnome
keyboard indicator applet for this and it pretty good for me.

However this doesn't seems to work for any java applications. System seems to
stay with whatever you selected as default and I have not find a way to change
the layout.
I notice this when using netbeans development environment and I found the same
behavior can be seen also in other Java applications (e.g. Java Console). So I
guess it's a general Java issue.
As I couldn't find anything with google of the search here, I posted this
ticket. Any help is highly welcome.

** Affects: sun-java6 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-06-06 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Hi Arne,

thanks so much for the comment! You are absolutely right, deinstalling the
Chinese fonts is just a workaround.
For the moment at least it works. :-)
Indeed I had a look at the documentation of this XML format that time, but I
thought this takes at least 1-2 hours reading the docs. I understand this XML
gives you all possibility to define you preferences, but I wished there is a
simple dialogue to maintain at least a simple list of preferred fonts.
(maybe a future release :-))

I think I'll probably give it a try when I have a little time, because the
default choice of Japanese fonts is quite bad. (There is anyway only a little
number of good Japanese fonts available.)
Linux is not very popular here in Japan.
Greetings from Tokyo,
Thomas

I uploaded pre-build patched version 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13. However apt-
src makes compiling as easy as installing an pre-build package.

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST/XV_SATURATION to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma/contrast)

2008-06-02 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
@GFree: I see you use unpatched driver. Since you use not totem but video
player that seems to keep the default values (I think at least VLC is doing
like this) this should be fine.
Actually the intel driver is mapping this to the neutral setting for
contrast/brightness/saturation. (according to HW register specification)

If you have personally other preferences (the blacks are not back enough
etc.), then please adjust the parameters to to your favourite setting,
that's what they should be used for.

However I would oppose changing the driver defaults to anything else
than neutral. Actually on my system I'm satisfied with the results.

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST/XV_SATURATION to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma/contrast)

2008-05-27 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Totem-player display setting has a button reset to defaults and here with me
this sets the color slider to pretty much exactly 50%. Remaining differences
(rounding) are not visible.
Don't know details of totem, but guess it stores default setting. So as the
scale is not adjusted to have neutral setting on 50% it should be fine once you
have used button reset to defaults.

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-05-16 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Hi Arne Goetje,

I was happy the fontconfig-voodoo -f -s ja_JP worked for me first. However
then I notice that the German Umlaute: (ÜÖÄßüöä) doesn't work any more.
Is there a way to tweak the system to display German and Japanese character
correct.
I now run fontconfig-voodoo -f -r to remove the Japanese setting, because
Romanji text looks really ugly with it. (looks like it's using Japanese font
for Romanji text with it.

Any ideas? Is there a way to find out what Chinese font is always
causing problem and remove them all from the system?

Have a nice day!
Thomas

[Bug 219931] Re: Japanese font switching issue

2008-05-16 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Ok I answered my own question:
I just tried myself. I removed all fonts that look like Chinese font. As
written above, I also removed the fontconfig setting with fontconfig-voodoo -f
-r, not it looks better with Japanese and German.
I set the status back... Have a nice day!

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST/XV_SATURATION to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma/contrast)

2008-05-09 Thread Thomas Fritzsche
Hi MacAdam,

yes, the the l was missing in the link. Patch is for the driver so not
depending on the player software.
At least the issues I suffered here was not showing up with some player because
these players doesn't adjust the xv attributes. The defaults value provided by
the X driver was OK, so no issue there.
Just totem does has this settings and tries to set to neutral when started
(50%), but the intel driver uses this parameter differently.
I changed i830_video.c file that is e.g. used with my i965 chip. I hope
this helps everybody having a similar chip. I tested smplayer and
totem-gstreamer here, but I don't have any issues with these programs (any
more).

Does it work for you?

Thanks,
Thomas
