[Bug 1237390] Re: stap fails with 3.5/3.8 kernels in precise

2013-10-15 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Chris, thank you! A few comments:

1) I don't know if I have advertised this already but if you care about
systemtap in ubuntu I could really use some help. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemtap/+bug/1144040

2) If new kernels are uploaded to old ubuntu releases would it be
possible to also upload new systemtap releases there? Backporting will
fix some issues but sometimes new kernels come with fully new features
that an old systemtap won't be able to use.

[Bug 1237390] Re: stap fails with 3.5/3.8 kernel in precise

2013-10-10 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
I would have backported these but I did not know that it was possible to
upload new packages to precise since it has already been released. Can
you maybe handle such backports in the future or give some guidance?

This might be debian bug #706817 that was fixed in systemtap

To confirm, please paste the output of

ls -ld /sys/kernel/debug

Thanks!

[Bug 1203590] Re: [MIR] systemtap

2013-07-25 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
I'd also like to understand the motivation behind this but meanwhile you
should note that most of the security vulnerabilities can only be
exploited by users that have been added to the privileged stapusr group.
Just installing the package does not make you vulnerable.

[Bug 824105] Re: systemtap does not work out of the box on natty

2013-07-22 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Michael, thanks for triaging systemtap bugs. I'd really appreciate if
somebody could triage these Ubuntu specific usability issues which I
don't hit since I mostly use Debian. (See also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemtap/+bug/1144040 )

Regarding this particular bug, systemtap 2.1-1~experimental1 added a
patch where any failure of 'stap' will point the user directly to
README.Debian:

$ stap -v -e 'FOO'
parse error: expected 'probe', 'global', 'function', or '%{'
saw: identifier 'FOO' at input:1:1
 source: FOO
 ^
1 parse error.
Pass 1: parsed user script and 91 library script(s) using
92232virt/25348res/2608shr/23300data kb, in 100usr/20sys/120real ms.
Pass 1: parse failed. [man error::pass1]
Tip: /usr/share/doc/systemtap/README.Debian should help you get started.

Do you think this is prominent enough for users to notice?

[Bug 106957] Re: Systemtap should require kernel debug information

2013-03-08 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
systemtap 2.1-1~experimental1 in debian now instructs users to see
README.Debian every time stap fails. README.Debian then asks them to run
the stap-prep command that installs all the required headers and
debugging symbols. This has been tested on both Debian and Ubuntu.

[Bug 1144040] [NEW] systemtap co-maintainer/tester for ubuntu wanted

2013-03-04 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm one of the people who maintain systemtap in Debian. I care about
Ubuntu a bit but I don't use Ubuntu almost anywhere so I don't tend to
use systemtap on Ubuntu either. Since systemtap heavily depends on
kernel versions this means that I often can't reproduce the bugs on
Debian.

In Debian we have RFH (request for help) bugs that can be used to
recruit new people to work on a package. I don't know what the practices
in Ubuntu are but if you are interested in systemtap on Ubuntu and have
some extra time could you consider helping us out? Simply triaging bugs
and testing new systemtap versions on Ubuntu would go a long way. This
is also a good opportunity to learn about Debian packaging and/or kernel
debugging.

[Bug 824105] Re: systemtap does not work out of the box on natty

2012-08-07 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
README.Debian describes how you can install the debug symbols. I don't
know how this could be automated. You can have more than one kernel
installed and only want debug symbols for one kernel.

If the documentation does not help you, consider running

http://lindi.iki.fi/lindi/systemtap/diagnose-error-cases.bash

and reporting its full output here.

[Bug 1000268] Re: please consider letting non-admins create ubuntu installation USB stick

2012-05-28 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Sorry to ask again but is there some specific area of code that you'd
like to be reviewed more carefully? I think I found at least a few
security bugs. For example it does not check that the file that the user
wants to write to the USB stick is actually something that the user can
normally access. This means you can tell it to write /etc/shadow to your
USB stick.

[Bug 1000268] [NEW] please consider letting non-admins create ubuntu installation USB stick

2012-05-16 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Public bug reported:

This is a wishlist bug. Currently

http://www.ubuntu.com/download

nicely describes how a user can create Ubuntu installation USB stick
using usb-creator. What it does not mention is that you need to be an
admin to create the USB stick since
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/com.ubuntu.usbcreator.policy has
auth_admin_keep set.

This is unfortunate since it means that users can not create Ubuntu
installation USB sticks on computers where they do not have admin
privileges (think university class rooms, libraries, work places where
people are not given root privileges to their desktops).

Please consider if this could be relaxed to at least to allow local
users to create such installation media.

[Bug 853567] Re: This package is not based on release tar available from github

2011-09-19 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
They don't match since orig.tar.gz is created from upstream git tag.
This should probably be documented in debian/README.source. Reasons
included

1) upstream does not sign tarballs so they don't have much extra value
2) having upstream history in Vcs-Git is very useful

As git usage patterns for packaging change I'm open at re-evaluating
this position.

[Bug 787953] Re: foxtrotgps crashed with SIGSEGV in ___vfprintf_chk()

2011-05-31 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
I looked at the disassembly of

  void XMLCDECL
  xmlGenericErrorDefaultFunc(void *ctx ATTRIBUTE_UNUSED, const char *msg, ...) {
  va_list args;

 if (xmlGenericErrorContext == NULL)
  xmlGenericErrorContext = (void *) stderr;

  va_start(args, msg);
  vfprintf((FILE *)xmlGenericErrorContext, msg, args);
  va_end(args);
  }

on amd64. It seems that xmlGenericErrorContext is
(*__xmlGenericErrorContext()) and seems to evaluate differently in the
three calls that are made here. The first two return the same value but
the third returns a different value. This causes vfprintf to get NULL as
the first argument even though the code appears to guard against that.

The implementation has

void * *
__xmlGenericErrorContext(void) {
if (IS_MAIN_THREAD)
return (xmlGenericErrorContext);
else
return (xmlGetGlobalState()-xmlGenericErrorContext);
}

and it seems that IS_MAIN_THREAD evaluates to zero on all three cases.
xmlGetGlobalState(), however, returns first 0x7fffe4019170 and then
0x7fffe4019540. Both have sane data but of course only the first one is
updated to refer to stderr, the second one has xmlGenericErrorContext
set to zero.

xmlGetGlobalState looks very complicated, I can't immediately see why it
would return different value for the same thread during the same
function call.

Anyways, if I apply

to libxml2 I do not see the crash anymore.

I doubt the bug is in libxml2 itself but this information might help in
any case. I suspect some threading bug in foxtrotgps.
