[Bug 1954635] [NEW] subiquity crashes when attempting advanced network/disk configuration

2021-12-13 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Subiquity for 20.04 crashes and a system install attempt fails when
attempting to do an install with a complex network or disk
configuration.

When attempting an install with a semi-complex configuration (e.g.
multiple network interfaces bonded together using LACP or multiple
partitions with LVM, tmpfs, and swap), the installer will crash and
fail.

I am attempting an automated install using ISOs generated by the scripts
at https://github.com/covertsh/ubuntu-autoinstall-generator and I am
attempting to use the daily Ubuntu ISOs downloaded by that script. The
user-data file that is attached fails with the current Ubuntu ISO
download; however, it works with a daily ISO download that I made on
2021-12-03, so it appears that something broke on or after that date.

[Bug 1954582] [NEW] activation-mode directive not recognized in user-data file

2021-12-11 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Using daily update image for 20.04
Placing activation-mode in the netplan section of the user-data file results in
an error about an unknown token. After the automated install fails and you get
dumped to a shell, no changes to files in /etc/netplan are needed to make the
netplan try or netplan apply commands work without error.

Documentation on this token are at https://netplan.io/reference/ (and
elsewhere).

[Bug 1934735] Re: package gitolite3 3.6.11-2 failed to install/upgrade: installed gitolite3 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2021-12-09 Thread Todd Taft
It looks like the root cause of this issue is that the post-install
script uses the mktemp command when the current user is root and the
default Ubuntu configuration sets $TMPDIR to /tmp/user/uid# so the
temporary file that gets created is in /tmp/user/0. Later, the script
switches to the gitolite3 user and tries to read the file that was
created with mktemp (as the gitolite3 user, but that read fails because
the gitolite3 user doesn't have permission to navigate the parent
directories of the file. Changing permissions on the parent directories
is a security problem, so the best solution is probably to set the
$TMPDIR environment variable to some world-readable directory, such as
/tmp, at the start of the post-install script. So, a one-line addition
to the debian/postinst script probably fixes the issue.

[Bug 1932525] Re: This bug is back on my pc - bug #1722481 Systemd Sync twice at shutdown

2021-12-09 Thread Todd Taft
I am seeing something similar on 20.04. If my network fails and I have
any network filesystems mounted (including nfs3 or nfs4 via autofs or
iSCSI via fstab) when I issue a shutdown or reboot command, then I am
likely to have a 10+ minute delay after the console displays that it has
reached target shutdown. The console will then cycle through displaying
information about each filesystem, such as the fact that the system is
trying to unmount it, the unmount failed, and it is now forcibly killing
processes. While I have not looked at the source, the timing of the
console messages would imply that the process to unmount filesystems and
kill processes is single-threaded, as there is a significant delay as it
goes through this process with each filesystem. After it has cycled
through all filesystems, it then slowly cycles through each filesystem
again. Unfortunately, the logging system has already shut down by the
time any of this happens, so I have no logs in journald or syslog to
submit in relationship to this issue.

Can the process be fixed to only cycle through each filesystem once, and
also to attempt to do multiple filesystems simultaneously so that, at
worst, I only have to wait through one timeout cycle? I could possibly
see a reason that you might need to wait the timeout multiple times in
the event of nested remote filesystems (e.g. if every level of
/dont/try/this/at/home was a different filesystem on non-local disk),
but that is not the configuration that I have.

[Bug 95925] Re: debsecan should be either adjusted (for ubuntu) or removed

2021-12-04 Thread Todd Taft
The unofficial database proposed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debsecan/+bug/95925/comments/12
appears to work. It's at least a major improvement on the current
situation.

I'd suggest that Ubuntu officially adopt the server-side tool and that
appropriate updates are made to the defaults distributed with the
package so that writing manual overrides to SUITE and SOURCE are not
needed in /etc/default/debsecan to get usable results.

[Bug 1953212] [NEW] easygit homepage returns 404 error

2021-12-03 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

The project homepage listed in easygit packaging returns a 404 error.

The package info as shown by apt, aptitude, etc. lists a URL that
returns a 404, and the upstream-source listed in

[Bug 1952164] Re: cups.path repeatedly goes into systemd failed state

2021-11-24 Thread Todd Taft
Discovered this was a system-wide problem, not specifically related to cups.
Backup program was holding open a very high number if inotify watches and this
was causing issues for other programs (including cups).
Solution was to add a conf file in /etc/sysctl.d that set a higher value for
fs.inotify.max_user_watches than the default (and then force a reload).

In my case, this seems to work:
echo "fs.inotify.max_user_watches=131072" >> /etc/sysctl.d/999-local.conf
sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/999-local.conf

Note that this solution may cause other issues on systems with low
memory.

[Bug 1951920] [NEW] revise dependencies of munin to accept either munin-node or munin-node-c

2021-11-22 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

On a 20.04 system, attempting to install the packages munin and munin-
node-c with aptitude fails, as munin recommends munin-node, but munin-
node and munin-node-c conflict. Since both munin-node and munin-node-c
provide the same function, the recommendation of the munin package
should be adjusted to recommend either munin-node or munin-node-c.

Expected result:
aptitude install munin munin-node-c does show any conflicting dependencies.

Acutal result:
# aptitude install munin munin-node-c
...
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
munin-node-c : Conflicts: munin-node but 2.0.56-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) munin-node [Not Installed]

 Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
2) munin recommends munin-node

[Bug 1940603] Re: postfix/smtpd: fatal: no SASL authentication

2021-09-19 Thread Todd Taft
That change to the file does seem to prevent the error, and I appreciate
the help with my immediate problem. I'm still wondering if having the
program crash as it did without generating a very useful error message
is desirable behavior.

2021-09-09 Thread Todd Taft
Any more info you need? I was trying to follow the official Ubuntu
server guide ( https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/mail-postfix ) with only a
few deviations for things like a different location for SSL files. Are
there more problems with that guide? Earlier in this item, you
suggested moving authenticated connects off of port 25l but that doesn't
happen in thus guide.

[Bug 1940603] Re: postfix/smtpd: fatal: no SASL authentication

2021-08-25 Thread Todd Taft
I didn't think the sasl2-bin package was needed, but someone else
suggested I try adding it.

Even with the settings that I had, shouldn't I have seen some messages
from the server on the telnet connection? (e.g. remote mail server
connecting to send mail to an address where this system is the final
destination, so no authentication is attempted) If I telnet to port 25
on other servers, I get a 220 message, and then it waits for some
command. On this system, I get no message from the server, and the
connection is closed within about a second.

[Bug 1940603] [NEW] postfix/smtpd: fatal: no SASL authentication

2021-08-19 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to setup a combination IMAP/SMTP server using Dovecot and
Postfix on a 20.04 system. After attempting to setup SASL
authentication for postfix, the system fails with a postfix/smtpd:
fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms whenever any SMTP connection is
attempted (either via a program like Thunderbird or telnet localhost
25). I'm trying to use the guide at
https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/mail-postfix, but even with some of the
debug settings enabled, I'm still not seeing a more useful log message.
What's wrong?

My configuration:

I'm having a similar issue on Ubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo P340, which is a

battery operation without an external UPS. I'm attaching a copy of

[Bug 1938672] [NEW] Incomplete information in AppArmorProfiles web documentation

2021-08-02 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

The table of profiles on the page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/AppArmorProfiles does
not have any of the footnote entries for 20.04 or 20.10. Since these
footnotes are present in the table for earlier versions of Ubuntu, it
implies that there have been multiple changes to AppArmor profiles in
20.04.

Example: The table shows that an AppArmor rule set exists for Apache2.
For 18.04 (and earlier) releases, the table footnotes indicates that
these rules are not enabled by default. The lack of footnote entries in
the 20.04 (and later) release columns suggest that the AppArmor rules
are enabled by default. However, even after installing the apache2 and
libapache2-mod-apparmor packages, aa-status indicates that no AppArmor
rules are enforced for Apache. Lengthy comments at the beginning of the
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.apache2 file indicate that this is the intended
behavior, and thus the table on the page mentioned in the first
paragraph is incomplete.

Similar issues exist for multiple other table entries (Firefox,
rsyslogd, etc.).

This is being reported as a bug because the wiki page is marked as
immutable.

[Bug 1936273] [NEW] apt not respecting Ignore-Files-Silently directive

2021-07-14 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

I have a configuration management system that stores a backup copy of
files that it updates with a suffix based upon the date that the file is
updated (.-MM-DD)

In Ubuntu 20.04, I have added a file 00ignore to the /etc/apt/apt.conf

The contents of the file are one line:

The system appears to read the file, but doesn't seem to process it, as
apt and related programs still spit out warnings.

[Bug 1908090] Re: ubuntu 20.04 kdump fails

Are you sure you have this bug filed against the correct package?

At a glance, it looks like you should file it against linux-meta (see

kexec-tools "provides tools to load a kernel into memory and then "reboot"
directly into that kernel using the kexec system call, bypassing the normal

[Bug 1933711] [NEW] defining tmpfs /tmp in autoinstall config fails

2021-06-26 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Attempting to creat a tmpfs /tmp partition with the Ubuntu 20.04
autoinstaller fails with the error: __init__() missing 1 required
positional argument: 'device'

The relevant section of the user-data file I'm attempting is:
- id: tmpfs1
  type: mount
  spec: "none"
  path: "/tmp"
  options: size=4194304
  fstype: "tmpfs"

This section is copied directly from
https://curtin.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/storage.html (changing the
path).
The full file is attached.

Autoinstall succeeds if all of the lines listed above are deleted.

I'm using the daily ISO autoinstall image downloaded using the script at
https://github.com/covertsh/ubuntu-autoinstall-generator .

[Bug 1917304] [NEW] Firefox bookmark separators not showing in budgie

2021-03-01 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.2, bookmarks separators do not appear within
Firefox bookmarks menu.

This issue is being logged against Budgie, rather than Firefox because
it does not appear in other variants of Ubuntu 20.04.2 (e.g.
"standard"/GNOME, Ubuntu-Mate, Lubuntu)

How to reproduce:
Launch Firefox
Go to Customize
Make sure Menu bar is enabled
Save settings
Go to Bookmarks - Show All Bookmarks
Verify that the bookmarks menu area shows several bookmarks/folders and
separators (create them if they don't exist.)
Open the Bookmarks menu and see that no separators appear

Versions installed:
budgie-desktop-environment 0.13.7
ubuntu-budgie-desktop 0.65
firefox 86.0+build3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

Problem is still present in 18.04
The unison-all and unison-all-gtk have no real content. The only thing in them
is the copyright file and a changelog file that indicates that old versions
were removed. This contradicts the package description which says that it
install multiple supported versions in order to sync with older systems.

[Bug 1224723] Re: Clamscan finds CVE-2013-2465 in openjdk-6-jre-headless

2013-09-30 Thread Todd Taft
CVE-2013-2465 is a CVE against Java, although it is against Oracle Java.
It's not immediately clear to me whether or not this vulnerability is
also applicable to openJDK. Can you confirm that this vulnerability
does not apply to openJDK (or that it is already patched in this
version)?

Labeling the file as a virus is probably incorrect, but my concern was
that it represented an unpatched security vulnerability.

Most of the other files in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security
/ubuntu-cve-tracker/master/view/head:/README.virus have obvious reasons
that they would constitute false positives (e.g. they are samples of
exploits/viruses), but I don't see an obvious reason why this particular
file would be a false positive. If this really is a false positive,
then I would suggest that it's a bug in the clam database, since that
means that it is detecting a Java security problem where none exists.

[Bug 1162119] [NEW] nagios not expanding wildcards correctly

and a hostgroup defined like this in a file in /etc/nagios3/conf.d:
define hostgroup {

then, nagios will include host array001 in the hostgroup array2w even

[Bug 1156678] [NEW] acroread not updating mozilla plugin version number correctly

2013-03-18 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Version updates to Adobe Acrobat reader are not being reported correctly
to Firefox. Although aptitude shows that I have version 9.5.4-1precise1
installed (as does Help-About Adobe Reader within Adobe Reader), when I
go to tools-AddOns-Plugins in Firefox, the system reports that I have
Adobe Reader 9.4 installed. Additionally, external browser plugin
checkers (e.g. https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ ) report that I have
version 9.4.0 installed.

To reproduce this, it seems to be necessary to have installed an older
version originally, and then upgraded using aptitude (or equivalent).

Even if I remove the acroread package and then re-install it, Firefox
and the external browser plugin checkers only report that I'm running
version 9.5.0 and not 9.5.4.

[Bug 1026139] Re: NFS client readdir loop

2013-03-11 Thread Todd Taft
I'm still seeing this bug in Ubuntu 12.04 (using static (i.e. non-
automounter) mounts).

Redhat claims to have fixed this bug with kernel release 2.6.32-279.el6
(for RHEL 6) and 2.6.18-348.el5 (for RHEL 5). Can their fixes be ported
to the Ubuntu kernel tree?

[Bug 1086151] [NEW] Nagios utils.pm has wrong default path to rpcinfo

2012-12-03 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

In the file /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/utils.pm , the default path to the
rpcinfo command is specified as /usr/bin/rpcinfo . In more recent
versions of Ubuntu (e.g. 12.04), the rpcinfo command has moved from
/usr/bin/rpcinfo to /usr/sbin/rpcinfo . The default path in

change. Some commands, such as /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_rpc won't

[Bug 772158] [NEW] samba force group option fails

2011-04-27 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Running x86_64 version of Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
samba version: 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.5

The force group option is not working. If I specify a group to be
forced on a share, new files/directories created by users connecting to
this share do not get this group set.

smb.conf section:
[example]
  path = /srv/example
  read only = no
  guest ok = no
  valid users = +group1
  force group = +group1

If a user creates a new file/directory in this share, the UNIX group for
the new entry is the user's default UNIX group, not group1.

I see this error in the client log on the samba server:

[Bug 670789] [NEW] libpam-afs-session gives user membership in nonexistant group

2010-11-04 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-afs-session

Using libpam-afs-session 1.7-2 on x86_64 version of Ubuntu 10.04.1

When I have this module in my PAM stack and I authenticate as a user
with an AFS identity (and get a token), I get added to a group that
doesn't exist, as reported by the id and groups commands:

$ id
uid=648(taft) gid=200(bioinf)
groups=200(bioinf),2693(csbio),2694(csbioadm),1103439836
$ groups
bioinf csbio csbioadm groups: cannot find name for group ID 1103439836
1103439836

1103439836 is not a group (or gid number of a group) that is defined
anywhere on my system. If I comment out pam_afs_session.so from the
common pam stack files, I don't see this behavior.

Since the default Ubuntu /etc/bash.bashrc file runs the groups command,
every time that I login as a user with an AFS identity, I get the above
error message (groups: cannot find name for group ID 1103439836) before
my first shell prompt.

Note that the number of the non-existent group is not always the same.

[Bug 668436] [NEW] apparmor missing entry for some ssl ca cert files

2010-10-29 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

The default apparmor profile in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/ssl_certs
is missing entries for the /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla directory.
Many of the files in the /etc/ssl/certs directory (which apparmor allows
access to) are actually links to files in the /usr/share/ca-
certificates/mozilla directory. Apparmor currently denies access to the
files that are in the /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla directory.
This access would be needed if you wanted to run a SSL service (e.g.
ldaps) and your SSL certificate were signed by a public CA and the
public CA's certificate were in the /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla
directory. A default Ubuntu install puts most public CAs in the
/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla directory, and just has soft links to
the files from the /etc/ssl/certs directory.

Proposed addition to /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/ssl_certs file:
/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla r,
/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/* r,

[Bug 652479] Re: pam-afs-session cannot be managed by pam-auth-update

2010-10-12 Thread Todd Taft
Installing the 1.7-2 version from Debian testing fixed the problem for
me. I second the proposal to resync with Debian.

[Bug 652479] [NEW] pam-afs-session cannot be managed by pam-auth-update

2010-09-30 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-afs-session

OS:
Running 10.04.1 on amd64 platform.
Software versions:
libpam-runtime: 1.1.1-2ubuntu5
libpam-afs-session: 1.7-1build1

The pam-afs-session module cannot be managed by pam-auth-update. When I
have libpam-afs-session installed, and I run pam-auth-update, I don't
see any options to configure AFS PAM support. I suspect that this is
because this package does not place an entry in /usr/share/pam-configs.
One effect of this problem is that, even after installing this package,
an AFS ticket is not obtained at login unless the system administrator
manually edits the files in /etc/pam.d.

[Bug 605149] [NEW] Upgrade to cups-bsd_1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2 hangs during preseeded install

2010-07-13 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

When my system runs aptitude -y full-upgrade during an preseeded
(automated) install, the upgrade to the cups-bsd package hangs the
upgrade. The system is installing the 64-bit version of 10.04.

The aptitude upgrade is run from a script called by the late_command
string in the preseed file (d-i preseed/late_command)

The last message in the install log before the hang is:
Preparing to replace cups-bsd 1.4.3-1 (using
.../cups-bsd_1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb)

If I do a ps, I get the following processes (not counting the aptitude/dpkg
commands) related to the cups upgrade:
/bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/cups-bsd.prerm upgrade 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2
/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontentd /usr/sbin/update-inetd --pattern
cups-lpd --disable printer

If I kill the second process (it's a child of the first), then things
continue on.

Running this command on a live (normal booted) system works, as does
running this upgrade from a live system.
