[Bug 584243] Re: IPv4 addresses come sorted before IPv6 ones if you ask libc in teredo environment.

2010-05-23 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
Yes, this is intentional behaviour, teredo addresses have lower
reliability than native v6 mechanisms and in general lower than ipv4, so
it makes sense to give them lower priority too.

| Apparently there is a regression in the ath5k driver affecting my card.

That is another bug than this one; _please_ don't clutter this bug with

| ipv6.disable=1 does not make any difference for me in Lucid (I haven't
| tested that with karmic, since the eglibc in karmic-updates fixed it)

That's interesting, since eglibc does iterate over configured network
interfaces and only sets seen_ipv6 if you have a non-IPv4 address which
is also not loopback

This suggests it's taking another code path from what I was assuming
from reading the code.

| Matthias Klose [2010-04-16 0:16 -]:
| There's a eglibc testbuild prepared; it's tested to install and survive
| a reboot; if you want to test it, please add to /etc/apt/sources.list:
|
|deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-toolchain/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
|
| Makes no difference here. Is that still the same patch as
| local-ipv6-lookup.diff in karmic-updates?

It's a somewhat simplified version which I believe should have worked,
but apparently doesn't.

2010-04-14 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
]] Matt Giuca

Hi,

| I understand that this is pretty much a bug in the *routers*, not in
| Ubuntu. The reason it's reported here on Launchpad and not in a thousand
| routers is because you're planning to implement a workaround in Ubuntu,
| right?

Yes (to both questions).

| What you are saying is, if I switch to another DNS server, then it *may
| not* be the same bug, but it *might* be (if my router is ignoring IPv6
| DNS requests, but the other DNS server is good). But it could be other
| problems with my router's DNS server besides IPv6.

If it works fine with Karmic and works fine with Lucid with IPv6
disabled, but is slow at resolving DNS with IPv6 enabled, that is this
bug. If it's slow with IPv6 disabled, that's really interesting as
well.

| But if I disable IPv6 entirely, and the bug does not go away, then it is
| not this bug. (I haven't been able to disable IPv6 yet).

In grub, add «ipv6.disable=1» after the line with loads the kernel (this
one presumably ends with «quiet splash»).

Can you include the output of running «ip a» in your reply as well?
Preferably both before and after disabling IPv6.

Medium importance as this really impacts productivity in many-users-

Re: [Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-04 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
]] Martin Pitt

| Ah, Tollef shed some light on this. Ubuntu's glibc up to early Karmic
| had a patch applied which disabled unnecessary IPv6 DNS lookups
| (http://err.no/patches/glibc-only-lookup-ipv6-if-it-makes-sense.diff).
| This was dropped in Karmic to fix some IPv6 lookup issues (bug 239701,
| bug 374674), but also caused this regressions.
|
| Mithrandir| so I suspect somebody should take my patch, refine it so it
| doesn't just reject v6 addresses (try again after processing if there no
| hits, allowing ipv6 then, or something like that)

If you want to emulate a broken DNS server (regardless of whether you
have access to one), add something like the following iptables rule:

sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 53 \! -f -m u32 --u32 0 22
0x3C @ 8 11 0x1F = 0 0 22 0x3C@ 17 0xFF @ 18 0xFF @ 21
 0xFF = 0x1c -j DROP

then try to look up sixxs.net or any other second-level domain. It does
not matter whether this actually has records or not. Assuming you
don't have any IPv6 address with scope = site, this should be slow on
9.10 and fast on 7.04 through 9.04. If you have any IPv6 address with
scope = site, it will be slow on all variants. (The reason for the
two-level limitation is due to limitations in the u32 classifier.)

[Bug 235983] Re: odd behaviour with overly long lines in irssi

2009-10-24 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
I can see the same bug. You need to turn off screen's folding of long
lines, typically by pressing C-a r, then it's trivially reproducable.
You can get rid of it again by pressing C-a r. It looks like something
in screen isn't repainting the line correctly when something fills the
complete line, or something along those lines.

(I'm on hardy, real HW vs virtualisation does not have anything to do
with it)

[Bug 230703] Re: Casper only scans vfat filesystems for cow files

2008-06-02 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
This is a really, really bad idea; it can easily cause data loss in the
following scenario:

Machine hibernates, user boots an Ubuntu live CD which then proceeds to
scan all partitions. Doing this causes the journal of the root
partition of the suspended system to be replayed. Later, the hibernated
system is resumed without it noticing that the journal having been
replayed. This causes file system corruption.

It was done in Debian, for reasons beyond me, but I decided to merge it
in in Ubuntu as well to make merges from Debian easier later on.

(And I have uploaded a fixed package for this bug just now.)

You need to use apt-get autoremove to remove unused packages from the
system; this is in any case not a bug in emacs, but would be in either
apt or whatever package management tool you are using.

[Bug 185263] Re: -mlong32 is an unknown option

2008-01-23 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
* indigoviolet

| Unfortunately, the gcc I got with Ubuntu 7.10 says that -mlong32 is an
| unknown option. Probably that happens because programs compiled with
| this convention will need to be loaded with a special version of libc.

Not only would you need a different libc, you would have to have _all_
other libraries compiled with this same other ABI. I suspect you
would have to get support into the kernel as well for it.

If you really want to do this, it would probably be better to approach
AMD and Intel with the suggestion of defining such an ABI; this is not
something Ubuntu can reasonably do (and I'll therefore mark this bug
as «Won't Fix»).

This sounds like you have your LFS entry inside the:

### BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST
## lines between the AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST markers will be modified
## by the debian update-grub script except for the default options below

[...]

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

[Bug 184364] Re: Forced mysql (and other) dependencies in dovecot

Re: [Bug 184364] Re: Forced mysql (and other) dependencies in dovecot

2008-01-22 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
* J. Javier Maestro

| Perhaps a possible course of action is to offer several dovecot-auth
| packages, with a default dovecot-auth-filesystem or whatever that uses
| the basic password auth, and then other dovecot-
| auth-{pgsql,mysql,ldap,...}. Then, there would be dovecot-auth-full for
| those who need several of those installed at the same time.

In order to save about 3MB of disk space? I don't see any point in
the maintenance overhead.

| I see it kind-of-like the apache2-mpm-worker and apache2-mpm-prefork,
| when one is installed, it uninstalls the other, etc. I don't know if
| this kind of packages are common, but I know that I would love to have
| them without having to manually recompile the src.

-mpm-worker and -mpm-prefork are not possible to combine into one
package in any sane way and have very different performance and
feature characteristics, so the comparison doesn't hold.

In general, the policy is for packages to be compiled with all
features enabled rather than being able to turn features on and off.
The one big exception to this is X support where quite a few packages
exists both with and without X support.

[Bug 86480] Re: UVF exception : dcraw 8.39 - 8.61

2007-09-18 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
The last suggestion from David in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=431883#60 seems fine to me. Ideally, I'd like the
wording to be even clearer than it is that dcraw is under the GPLv2 or
later (or at the distributor's option, a list of other licences).

I'm also naively assuming that the licence here is for dcraw as a whole,
not particular to single source files. (In the latter case, we need to
make sure the GPLv2 (or another free licence) is ok for all source
files.)

[Bug 129951] Re: usplash doesn't parse the default config file

2007-08-22 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
From sscanf(3):

A directive is one of the following:

   ·  A  sequence of white-space characters (space, tab, newline, etc;
see isspace(3)). This directive matches any amount of white
space, including none, in the input.

so if you are seeing problems due to this, it's something else than the
parser not behaving due to spaces in the configuration file.

[Bug 131559] language names are lowercase

2007-08-10 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

In the tracker preferences, it shows my language as norwegian, while
it should rather be Norwegian (upper-case).

Another option would be to remove the language option completely, since
I have expressed a preference to what language I use in my environment
variables.

Yes, this is a nice theory. In practice, it means you will get mail
from angry users that you have hacked their web site, etc. We tried
it in Debian, and we did get those kinds of mails for quite a while.

I would rather recommend keeping the «It works» page.

[Bug 122103] creates ~ even when nautilus has ~ as the Desktop

2007-06-25 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs-gtk

I have configured nautilus to treat ~ as my desktop (through a gconf
preference). xdg-user-dirs-gtk does not seem to pick this up and
creates a ~/Desktop directory for me when I log in.

Re: [Bug 20999] Re: Upgrades fail with a message about Old queue files present

2007-06-05 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
* Tomi Junnila

| Note that if MailMan fails the upgrade (so that it can be retried), this
| will fail upgrading from edgy to feisty.

Yes.

| The presence of shunted messages should not fail the upgrade, a better
| option would be to hold until the user can manually handle the
| situation, then continue directly.

That is not possible to do based on how dpkg works. The reason for
failing is you can then fix the problem by unshunting or deleting the
messages. Later, you might well not be able to unshunt them, since
the on-disk format is not stable.

[Bug 118615] Re: sudo cd DIR doesn't work

2007-06-04 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
Correct, this is fundamental to how UNIX works. cd has to be built
into the shell, while sudo is not. If you want to do this, you should
spawn a shell using sudo -s or sudo -i and then run the commands you
want, including cd.

so marking as fix released. As Thijs writes, it requires manual
intervention to fix this.
