[Bug 1759286] Re: Thunderbird shows large overlay emojis whilst downloading mail

2018-04-12 Thread Tom Gelinas
It's still a brutal rendering bug for usability. We shouldn't have to
use a PPA for the rest of the beta cycle, the Ubuntu release packages
need bug reports. If Canonical wants people to do proper testing, issues
like this are a major hindrance. Giant emojis on top of my email make me
take the beta out of my workflow. Otherwise it's looking fine, but
really this is worth updating the current package for.

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2014-06-08 Thread Tom Gelinas
Zwylicht, thanks for the information, I will definitely use that for
fine-tuning.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks
X.Org settings are easily set with Quirks, which can be distributed with
Ubuntu. Simply submit a patch and explain the reason. For examples, please see
the files @ /usr/share/ubuntu-drivers-common/quirks/ .

Touchpads definitely need some extra configuration in the Linux
environment, we need to properly document these quirks.

[Bug 1138577] Re: banshee-extension-streamrecorder hangs banshee on startup

2013-09-05 Thread Tom Gelinas
Does merely installing this package cause banshee to hang, or must the
extension be enabled first? It is not installed by default, but neither
is Banshee. If this bug isn't solved, the package should be removed from
repositories, it is a serious usability problem. I'll test this later
this week.

Has anyone reproduced this on another distribution?

2012-10-23 Thread Tom Gelinas
I've removed all my X11 quirks and tested 304.60, the backlight controls
seem to work. They're still really buggy, but no effort is needed to get
them working. Packages meant for Ubuntu 12.04 arr available here:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates?field.series_filter=precise
. Please let me know if I was sloppy in testing this, but I think it's
fixed.

Brendan Donegan: There are no show-stopping bugs with the open-source
drivers, but there are some features that are unsupported, such as HDMI
audio support, clocking adjustments, VDPAU support. Those last 2 have a
significant impact on battery life, but the machine's still usable. The
T510's certification makes sense to me, thanks for responding!

2012-10-18 Thread Tom Gelinas
Not to say that /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been deprecated, but: The X11
Quirks files are a quick way to fix backlight control issues. I have
smashed/replaced my LCD panel since reporting this bug, and no longer
hear a buzzing noise when changing brightness while forcing the
proprietary NVIDIA driver to control brightness.

For X11 quirk-related documentation, please read /usr/share/ubuntu-
drivers-common/quirks/lenovo_thinkpad , and also
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks .

You can make a new quirk file that applies to your laptop. This sucks,
but anyone can submit a patch. (Bad answer). Good luck!

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2011-11-01 Thread Tom Gelinas
The nvidiabl driver now detects ThinkPad T510s with model 4313CTO. This
will not allow gnome-power-manager to control the backlight, but at
least the keys will worksort of. With autodetected values,
brightness can be turned down all the way, but can only be set to a
proper maximum by switching to a VT and turning the brightness down a
notch. If anyone would like to play around with backlight values, the
instructions below will get them set up. nvidiabl's source can be
modified to work with other ThinkPad models as well.

ACPI backlight control must be set to vendor, the thinkpad_acpi module's
brightness controls must be disabled and the brightness keys must be
bound using acpi events.

ACPI backlight controls can be set to vendor by setting
'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=acpi_backlight=vendor' in
/etc/default/grub and then running update-grub.

thinkpad_acpi's brightness controls can be disabled by creating
/etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf and adding the line options
thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=0.

nvidiabl source can be obtained from
https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl , then installed by dkms. The
scripts nvidia_backlight_down.sh and nvidia_backlight_up.sh should
be copied from the scripts folder to /etc/acpi.

Then the brightness keys can be bound to those scripts by
creating/filling the following files:

/etc/acpi/events/lenovo-4313cto-brightness-down
event=video LCD0 0087
action=/etc/acpi/nvidia_backlight_down.sh

/etc/acpi/events/lenovo-4313cto-brightness-up
event=video LCD0 0086
action=/etc/acpi/nvidia_backlight_up.sh

ACPI events were determined using acpi_listen.

Alternately, there are .deb packages that install nvidiabl via dkms available
from https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl/downloads . Currently only
4313CTO models have backlight support by default, but it's only a matter of
adding PCI IDs and some basic detection stuff. That stuff can be passed when
the module is loaded, check the docs for details.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2011-07-03 Thread Tom Gelinas
I have linked this bug to Ubuntu Hardware Certification.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-certification/+question/163597

Hopefully they will treat this bug with respect. Switching between text
mode VT and a Nvidia-proprietary powered X server is not stable!

[Bug 788540] Re: [Thinkpad T410s] Mute indicator gets out of sync

2011-05-26 Thread Tom Gelinas
So long as the mute button LED is lit, the speakers cannot output any
sound. It is possible to mute with the hardware button, unmute in
software and be able to use headphones without the speakers being used
if the headphones are accidentally unplugged. The speaker mute button
functions before any operating system is booted. It would be a good idea
to compare the functionality in Windows if someone has a chance,
including with the connexant audio utility.

2011-04-22 Thread Tom Gelinas
Sorry, thought I already replied: No, nvidia's bug reporting system
sucks. It doesn't even use HTTPS for login and they don't seem to pay
attention to Linux bugs. Someone like an OEM or big developer will need
to pick this up if it's going to be fixed, I think.

[Bug 602568] [NEW] Compiz Negative Plugin Toggle Screen Negative hotkey conflicts with Indicator Applet messaging menu hotkey

2010-07-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

In Ubuntu 10.04: The Compiz Negative plugin sets the toggle screen
negative hotkey to Super+m, but this key combination is already bound
to the Ubuntu Indicator Applet's messaging menu. Pressing Super+m will
raise Indicator Applet's messaging menu from the panel, and Compiz's
negative plugin is unaffected. Compiz's Toggle Screen Negative hotkey
should not be bound to Super+m in a default Ubuntu installation.
Compiz's negative plugin probably has no reasonable alternative to
Super+m, so that hotkey should not be enabled.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-05-31 Thread Tom Gelinas
NVIDIA's 256.29 beta driver is available from this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates .
The issue is not solved, and I didn't expect it to be. Again, the bugs for both
NVS *100m series and FX 880M have been reported to the NVIDIA developers @
nvnews.net, the links to those threads are in the description of this bug (bug
562005).

** Description changed:

The brightness controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M or Quadro FX
880M GPUs work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but
not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. It is
possible to force the NVIDIA driver to control the backlight by adding
[Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] to the Devices
section of xorg.conf . While this allows the backlight to be controlled,
the increments are inconsistent and often result in a buzzing noise from
the LED backlight on Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and W510s. Since this did not
occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something is
  wrong.

This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and
W510 with NVIDIA NVS 3100m and Quadro FX 880M chipsets, respectively, via
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510
- The issue is discussed on the nvnews.net forums at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . An NVIDIA developer
has said he will investigate the issue.
+ Because this issue is related to NVIDIA's proprietary video driver, this
issue can only be solved by them. An NVIDIA developer has said he will
investigate the issues, which are discussed on the nvnews.net forums at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . For future reference,
the latest NVIDIA drivers can be found in the Ubuntu X-Swat X updates PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

2010-05-26 Thread Tom Gelinas
lshal output seems to be identical when the nvidia driver is forced to
control the backlight. I agree, the nvidia driver is probably passing
the wrong number of brightness levels. Thanks for the link to bug 7779,
i'll play around wth that script later.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-05-24 Thread Tom Gelinas
Delyan, are you able to force the NVIDIA proprietary driver to control
the backlight? You can do this by adding

Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1

to the Devices section of xorg.conf and then restarting. Also, does
your backlight emit a buzz or humming noise when the brightness has been
changed using the NVIDIA drivers?

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Has anyone used this on Debian with absolutely no issues?

My understanding is that gpointing-device-settings has a plugin for
gnome settings daemon

Interesting settings can be found with gconf-editor at /apps/gnome/peripherals
. The priority for loading plugins is found at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device and also in the keys of
other plugins.

It seems that gpointing-device-settings stores settings in a way that conflicts
with gnome's regular configuration, ie. it uses different keys to store the
same settings, or it stores a setting in a way that affects many other
gnome-native settings. gpointing-device settings stores settings in
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad , while gnome
stores them at /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad . I suppose it becomes a
little complicated with the trackpoint, since gnome probably sees it as just
another mouse.

Maybe we should play with the priority of these gnome-settings-daemon plugins.

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Additionally, /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings has a list of
keybinds (obv.) and XF86TouchpadToggle is only listed there, nowhere
else in gconf. Before installing gpointing-device-settings,
XF86TouchpadToggle would toggle the touchpad and display a notification
using notify-osd. This broken after installing gpointing-device-
settings, and I can't get it back after uninstallng it. I suppose this
is a per-user issue, but I haven't found a configuration file in my home
folder or gconf a key that would cause this.

Has gpointing-device-settings ever worked in perfect harmony with gnome,
or has it always been a little wonky? The method it uses for storing in
gconf seems a little weird, but I think these priorities settings at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins will allow us to find workarounds
here. Please report back if you get something working!

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
I'm using Debian's 1.5.1, but using gconf-editor to set
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device/priority to 8 and
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse to 9 has allowed gpointing-
device-settings to have precedence over gnome's default mouse settings
app. Settings are now persistent.

I still haven't gotten XF86TouchpadToggle to work, i've tried setting
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keybindings to 7, tried disabling the
gpointing-device-settings plugin, and tried uninstalling libgpds and
gpointing-device-settings. Nothing worked. I'd really appreciate it if someone
could explain how the XF86TouchpadToggle binding works by default in Ubuntu
Lucid.

Hopefully this solution is reproducible!

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
jilgoosbee, are you able to use the XF86TouchpadToggle (FN+F8) when
using gpoining-device-settings? Are you able to disable the trackpad in
gpointing-device-settings and have the setting persist?

gpointing-device-settings and gnome-mouse-properties (Gnome's default mouse
preferences app) have 2 different methods/gconf keys they use for disabling
scrolling or the touchpad. gpointing-device-settings uses
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad/off , which
can be set as 0 for On with tapping and scrolling, 1 with tapping and scrolling
disabled and 2 with the entire touchpad disabled. gpointing-device-settings
also has separate keys for toggling vertical/horizontal scrolling and tapping.
| gnome-mouse-properties uses
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled to disable the touchpad
(which I assume is bound to XF86TouchpadToggle because there is no option to
disable the touchpad in gnome-mouse-properties). It also has its own separate
keys for toggling scrolling/tapping.

How can these conflicting settings be reconciled? Is this really what
these priorities settings at /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins are
meant to do? If so, it seems it only happens at load-time, but gnome-
mouse-properties tries to reassert control over these functions at
certain times.

with gnome-mouse-properties, ie. you haven't disabled horizontal

[Bug 560205] Re: vertical scrolling not working in 10.04

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Sorry if I was hasty with that, I reverted it. In Bug 489830 the
settings are still shown in gpointing, they just are inconsistently/non-
persistently applied. Could you ever apply gpointing's settings in
Lucid, or did it stop working as soon as you upgraded from Karmic? Do
you have trackpad scrolling enabled in gnome-mouse-properties aka
System-Preferences-Mouse Preferences?

You should try making a new user account using System- Administration
- Users and Groups and see if the preferences work for that user.

[Bug 488856] Re: gnome-mouse-properties should allow touchpad edge scrolling AND two-finger scrolling

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
I believe gpointing-device-settings may allow you use both side-of-pad
and two-finger scrolling, but I can't test it.

Does anyone know if there are plans to integrate gpointing-device-
settings and gnome-mouse-properties?

[Bug 577250] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon XF86TouchpadToggle actions do not work when gpointing-device-settings is installed

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gpointing-device-settings

By default, Ubuntu will disable touchpads via gnome-settings-daemon when
XF86TouchpadToggle (Fn+F8 on ThinkPads) is pressed, and this is
accompanied by a notify-osd notification. This no longer functions when
gpointing-device-settings is installed, and the functionality does not
return when gpointing is uninstalled. This occurs with gpointing-device-
settings 1.3.2 and Debian's 1.5.1 package.

Gconf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled is
normally toggled by XF86TouchpadToggle. The touchpad can always be
toggled by using this gconf key, but the keyboard button that
corresponds to XF86TouchpadToggle does not function on machines that had
at some point installed gpointing-device-settings.

I don't know if this is a bug of gpointing or gnome-settings-daemon.

[Bug 532374] Re: Lenovo Thinkpads with Core i5 and i7 suspend/resume (with kernel oops) once then fail horribly on next suspend

2010-04-26 Thread Tom Gelinas
Lanoxx, please look 1 post above yours, which refers to the bug report
for x61s. https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/569882 . Nobody
without an i5/i7 Thinkpad is affected by this particular bug.

** Description changed:

- This happens identically with both Thinkpad T410 and T510 models (intel
- integrated graphics, nvidia discrete graphics). The first
- suspend/resume completes successfully. The second suspend appears to
- work, but when waking, a few LEDs flicker, but the laptop stays
- suspended (moon LED on the lid stays lit, LED around power button
- continues to pulse). Pressing the power button again causes a reboot
- (no other buttons seem to do anything in this state).

2010-04-17 Thread Tom Gelinas
Again, I apologise for wiping out other people's attachments. Just to
make sure I didn't confuse anyone: this bug is NOT solved and Lenovo has
not yet released a BIOS update that addresses this issue. RSS Feeds for
Lenovo Thinkpad software updates can be found here:

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
I can now force the nvidia driver to control the backlight. I don't know
why it didn't work before, I did 2 hard reboots and the setting didn't
take effect. Regardless, the nvidia's backlight controller is still less
effective than the one used by nouveau or in a text mode VT. The nvidia
driver's backlight control should not be force-enabled by default
because it changes the brightness in inconsistent increments and causes
a buzzing noise to emanate from the LED backlight. This noise is at
different frequencies according the the level of brightness, and
sometimes ceases for a fraction of a second while the backlight is
changing from one brightness level to another. Is there anything I can
do to give a comparison of the brightness levels passed by nouveau
driver or in a text mode VT? I'd assume there is something in Sysfs.

What is the difference between how a text mode VT or nouveau change the
backlight brightness, compared with how nvidia does it? Gnome should be
forced to use a non-nvidia method by default.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
Also, dmesg reports that thinkpad_acpi's backlight controls are not
enabled, so it is certainly not controlling the backlight in the VT:

thinkpad_acpi: This ThinkPad has standard ACPI backlight brightness control,
supported by the ACPI video driver
thinkpad_acpi: Standard ACPI backlight interface available, not loading native
one.
