[Bug 1241589] Re: ubuntu 13.10 unable to boot on live usb (busy box - initramfs)

2013-10-26 Thread Tomi Parviainen
I had the same problem, but I was able to install 64-bit Ubuntu Studio
13.10 from DVD to (PNY 120GB) SSD after I removed my secondary HDD
(Samsung Spinpoint F1 640GB) power+SATA cables. After installation I put
the cables back and now the system works with both drives connected to
PC.

My PC setup:
- MB: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
- HDD1: PNY 120GB SSD (SSA2S120GC2DE08-TA / SSD9SC120GEDE)
- HDD2: Samsung Spinpoint F1 640GB SATA (HD642JJ)
- RAM: 2 X G.Skill 4GB DDR3-1600 (F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ)
- Graphics: Palit GeForce GTS250 - 1GB DDR3 Green Edition (NE3TS25NFHD02)
- DVD: Samsung SH-S223B/BEBE
- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 905e (HD905EOCGIBOX)

[Bug 996245] Re: [Gigabyte MB: GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB, ALC898] No sound from headphone/line-out jacks

2013-05-10 Thread Tomi Orava
I've got a copy of modified alsa-driver-1.0.25-5.17rc9-1.tar.bz2 that is
supposed to get this audio working.
However, I was unable to get any real results after my tests even after I
patched the patch_realtek.c.

I took take Z77X-UD5H specific patch and applied to change into 3.8.6
kernel:

I can of course also deliver the full alsa-drivers package to somebody for more

[Bug 1076288] [NEW] Radeon driver starts freezing and dies

2012-11-08 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Problem began playing a dvd with xbmc on dual screen setup. Everything
was fine, until I moved the mouse trying to get to the playback
controls. Then picture froze and after every few seconds the screens
blinked off and back again, with some temporary graphical glitches. This
persisted until I kill -9:ed xbmc, after which things seemed to
normalize. Trying to open a new window caused the same blink again, but
very slowly the terminal appeared. When the glitches didn't go away, I
tried restarting lightdm, but it only managed to stop, not start again.
However the console was still working.

After a while, "start lightdm" did work again.

[Bug 811281] Re: ath9k driver randomly disconnects and can only reconnect by reloading the module

2012-07-23 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Based on Laurent's comment, this bug does still appear in current
versions of Ubuntu, which is what was asked from me in March. I couldn't
answer that, because I thought nothing will ever happen, and switched
away from Ubuntu on my laptop last winter. I also won't be installing
Ubuntu just to confirm this bug on new releases.

Laurent, I guess you just have to file a new bug, as stupid as that
feels. Just like I did after #461769 was closed.

[Bug 921236] Re: [12.04 Xorg, xserver 1.11.3] Dual monitor, after entering password, mouse pointer stuck on LHS of screen, no desktop.

2012-07-05 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
This is still happening with xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.7.0-0ubuntu1.2

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47281. At least the

[Bug 995636] [NEW] Space, arrows and j/k stop working randomly

2012-05-06 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Sometimes all the other key commands to scroll a document apart from pg.
up/down stop working. Mouse wheel still works. This is unrelated to the
fullscreen bug, as entering fullscreen is not needed to trigger this,
and entering/exiting fs doesn't return the functionality. Nor does
opening any menus etc.

Hints appreciated how to debug this better, since there are no obvious
steps to reproduce this.

[Bug 972250] [NEW] "This GPT partition label has no BIOS Boot Partition"

2012-04-03 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

On a system installed with 11.10 and upgraded to 12.04 last week, today
grub fails to apt-get upgrade with this error in /var/log/apt/term.log:

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: This GPT partition label has no BIOS Boot
Partition; embedding won't be possible!.
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be
installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are
UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: non-sector-aligned data is found in the core file.

The system has luks+lvm as installed by 11.10 alternative installation
cd, and indeed seems to have GPT but no BIOS partition (system is
running BIOS on Asus F1A75V-PRO motherboard).

Well, I do experience tearing even with disabled compositing and GL
output. Sure, it's much better than all the other options, and tearing
happens exclusively in the top 50 pixels of the screen, but it does
happen. It's clearly visible using the videos from youtube (downloaded
using youtube-dl and played with mplayer -vo gl).

[Bug 894693] [NEW] Suggested package "firmware-linux" does not exist

2011-11-25 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

xserver-xorg-video-radeon suggests to install firmware-linux, which does
not exist. Bug #565482 was marked not fix, because the suggestion
already exists in Debian. However this is not a bug in there, since that
package does indeed exist in Debian, but not in Ubuntu. The correct
package in ubuntu is linux-firmware, which combines the debian packages
firmware-linux-free and firmware-linux-nonfree (firmware-linux is a
metapackage that pulls in both of the real packages). linux-firmware is
crucial because without the radeon microcodes, using the radeon driver
would be impossible (see
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#Missing_firmware).

The problem hasn't manifested because many people have linux-firmware
already installed due to other dependencies. However I do not believe
that is a proper reason to leave the dependencies of this package broken
in purpose, especially when this is trivial to fix. For example people
running their own custom kernels wouldn't have the firmware package
pulled in at all (and please don't go and say that only power users do
that and power users don't matter).

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-09-07 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I'm now getting the same errors in dmesg, in fact I'm not doing anything
and there's just more and more (seems like two errors every two
seconds). *But* there's no zero sized files under .Private so I no
longer can even remove them and cannot get rid of the erros even
temporarily...

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-09-01 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I tried "cat /dev/zero > zerofile" since heavy writing / disk exhaustion
seemed to be related to the problem. And sure enough, after the empty
space went to zero, same errors appeared again to dmesg. After deleting
the zerofile I logged out and tried to login, but it failed. Then I
tried to shutdown cleanly, but it failed. After a hard reboot the disk
space had been freed, and the .Private contained again zero length
files. The perm trick reveals that zeroed files include gnome applet
files and other stuff that logically could have been written into
without user action. All of them are now completely unreadable due to
input/output errors.

I'd say that ecryptfs is still extremely dangerous to use due to data
corruption problems in a common scenario, writing too much. It simply
cannot be offered to users without any kind of warning that this
happens.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-09-01 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I have deleted (again) the unreadable files, but I think a week is
unreasonably short time to verify the fix, as this bug does not have a
certain way to reproduce. Also I don't see how it makes sense to remove
the fix AND close the bug without verification leaving it certainly not
fixed.

Re: [Bug 810665] Re: marquee text in webpage makes commenting slow

2011-07-15 Thread Tomi Halonen
Hi, thank you for replying, yes I tested today and didn't notice much of
improvement with new profile, with no extensions.

The thing is that browsing generally is annoyingly faster with Chrome
and/or Windows 7 with Firefox. There seems to be this strange lag with
FF and linux systems.

Yes it could be related to spellchecker also but when I tested without
it the difference wasn't noticible. But for example in this page:
http://www.iltasanomat.fi/
.. the scrolling and commenting can be S-L-O-W. But not all the time,
maybe it's related to some internal services in Ubuntu/linux that makes
browsing crawl sometimes.

In generally, this occasionally lag is quite annoying and affects the
usability and preferring this system.

[Bug 810665] [NEW] marquee text in webpage makes commenting slow

2011-07-14 Thread Tomi Halonen
Public bug reported:

When there is marquee or scrolling text in certain webpages and there's
also possibility to comment the webpage, typing text comes very very
S-L-O-W under these pages. This problem is somehow related to linux OS
and Firefox. This is a real achilles knee -type problem, which should be
investigated for better usability in linux systems overall like Ubuntu.

2011-05-22 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Today removing and modprobing the driver wasn't enough, had also to
restart NetworkManager (the wireless applet in the panel just kept
saying "device not ready" until I did that).

The initscript now checks the defaults file, but the defaults file
itself should have at least a comment about this option. But I suppose
the actual problem is now fixed and released.

[Bug 778943] [NEW] man directories not created with proper permissions

2011-05-07 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: man-db

My user has strict umask, so normally everything is created without any
permissions for group or others. Using sudo, some man directories seem
to be created root:root rwx-- while they should be rwx-r-x-r-x.
Installation assumes that the default permissions are "right" and does
not make sure the dirs are accessible (excerpt from apt):

Setting up man-db (2.5.9-4) ...

[Bug 777733] [NEW] Quirk for 2-button mouse Logitech Marble Mouse (trackball)

2011-05-05 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Had to modify X11 configuration as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#2-button%20Mice, since this trackball
doesn't have more than two buttons and middle button emulation is
essential for copy&paste.

Couldn't find lsinput with apt, so cannot attach the output but will
attach dmidecode output.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-04-12 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
While it doesn't seem to be the focus of this bug, the relevant bugs
have been marked as duplicates of this one.

I'm running 2.6.38-8 in Natty beta, and still getting a lot of

Apr 12 14:46:32 puppy-ubuntu kernel: [31106.234038] Valid eCryptfs headers not
found in file header region or xattr region
Apr 12 14:46:32 puppy-ubuntu kernel: [31106.234047] Either the lower file is
not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext
passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO

so it would seem that either the patch hasn't fixed this, or #372014 is
not actually a duplicate.

[Bug 576744] Re: Unable to modify brightness when the screen is locked

2011-04-02 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
I'm not what is required to raise the importance of the bug, but this is
much more major usability problem than just "low". Given a non technical
user, the screen is just black without any hints on what the user can
do. This is equivalent to the system just plain crashing or freezing. A
more clever user might attempt to write the password blindly, and even
try pressing the caps lock if the first attempt doesn't work, but this
is just unacceptable.

It's even worse in natty, where the brightness goes to zero when
removing the power cable, even if all relevant settings are disabled in
power management GUI.

[Bug 670028] Re: cplay stops playing when !shell is used

2011-03-03 Thread Tomi Pieviläinen
There shouldn't be a version that stops playing when shell is used. The
version 1.49 does have a bug that crashes the cplay when !shell is used,
but this is fixed now. Note that if you have a long running external
command, then cplay won't progress to the next track if it's still
waiting for the shell to finish.

Assuming this report is about the crash using shell. If the long running
command is the problem for you, please reopen. But note that the shell
isn't meant for such use and it will be given quite a low priority.

[Bug 681928] Re: GRUB cannot boot into MAC OS X

2011-01-08 Thread Tomi Juntunen
Have you tried installing Ubuntu using rEFIt? Link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation
(the dual-boot section)

Before installing, read these topics before installing. It explains a
possible reason for this problem and a workaround by installing the
bootloader to the same partition as Ubuntu instead of replacing the
Mac's own bootloader. After this you can either use rEFIt to boot into
Mac OS X or Ubuntu, but I've seen discussions that some people who have
created the partition for Ubuntu using Bootcamp, go to the boot menu by
using the 'option' key and selecting the Windows icon, but I haven't
tried that myself.

[Bug 623039] Re: mythfrontend crashes on starting playback of some DVB recordings

2010-08-24 Thread Tomi Junnila
I installed the autobuilds (after backing up the DB) on the frontend
machine (the one I reported this error from, originally, and the one
using nvidia-current), and both recordings that were causing problems
earlier now worked ok. I've not had a chance to extensively test many
previously-working recordings, except to test that two others played ok
for the first minute or so at least.

I next upgraded the backend computer to autobuilds (0.23) also, but
won't be able to test that one until late. It is still recording ok at
least, and I don't really anticipate any problems since the crashes
appeared in exactly the same manner on both computers.

[Bug 623039] Re: mythfrontend crashes on starting playback of some DVB recordings

The same crash occurs also when other video renderers (VDPAU, OpenGL)
are used, and whether or not OpenGL vsync is enabled.

A gut feeling says the crashes occur only on recordings with DVB
subtitles, but this is not necessarily true -- the two recordings I
found which cause the crash were both on channels with DVB subtitles,
but some other recordings from the same channels seem to work ok.

MPlayer (2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu16) is able to output the raw
MPEG2 file without subtitles, using both "-vo gl2" and "-vo vdpau".
