[Bug 2000798] Re: cannot connect to K380 bluetooth keyboard

2024-05-03 Thread Tomislav
I revisited this and have apparently found a way to work around it.

The keyboard can be reset, which I understand to mean that it forgets
pairing information. The following sequence of keys resets it:

o

o

b

You should see all 3 lights turn on, signalising that the reset was
successful. After that, I paired the keyboard with my phone and both of
my laptops without issue, including the laptop that refused to connect
to the keyboard for the last year or so. (What a relief!)

As a reminder, to pair device #1 to the keyboard, press and hold F1 for 3 s,
until the light starts to blink. Then connect to the keyboard from device #1,
enter the confirmation code and you're done: repeat for the remaining 2 devices.

[Bug 2055289] [NEW] Bless saying "the file has been changed on disk" when no changes have been made

2024-02-28 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Observed:
- opened a binary file, 6-7MB in size, local filesystem; searched for a
pattern, navigated using the scroll bar and the "file changed" message appears
without any obvious reason
- the info bar cannot be closed/hidden by clicking "ignore"
- the info bar does not go away by clicking "reload"
- after that, bless cannot be shut down using -F4 or clicking the 'x'
window button (bless can be closed normally until the "file changed" message
appears)

Expected:
- no "file changed" message appears until there are changes in the file
- the info bar disappears when clicking ignore or reload
- Bless can be closed via the usual means, like any other application

Reproducibility:
- 6/6

Workarounds:
- can close bless using kill -9
- can reopen the file, but the message reappears shortly

[Bug 1888505] Re: Two-finger touchpad zoom extremely sensitive

2020-11-17 Thread Tomislav
I'm sorry about that: I misunderstood you.

It's good that you commented, because I installed LO 7 from snap and
it's still broken. I open Calc, a new spreadsheet, scroll up or down,
sometimes it works, sometimes it stalls and then starts working again. I
open Draw, hold and scroll on the touchpad (two-finger scroll)
and Zoom in/out is extremely sensitive.

[Bug 1888505] Re: Two-finger touchpad zoom extremely sensitive

2020-11-17 Thread Tomislav
@Sebastien

I don't have an easy way to boot 20.04 for the moment and I'm unlikely
to upgrade to 20.04 any time soon. As for a snap, that might work,
although it feels a bit like a zero-sum game: you can have a working
touchpad or normal root filesystem access, but not both...I'll see what
I can do, thanks for the suggestions!

2020-11-16 Thread Tomislav
@Sebastian, thanks for the clarification, the tag seemed a bit

In the meantime, I've dug up that the bug has in fact been fixed
upstream, although how/when/if that might trickle down to Ubuntu 18.04

@Adolfo Why low priority?

@Martin, @Iain why "wontfix"?

Is it a matter of reporting the bug elsewhere or a matter of touchpads

[Bug 1888505] [NEW] Two-finger touchpad zoom extremely sensitive

2020-07-22 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Open Calc ->  +

Expected behaviour: document viewpan zooms/unzooms at a reasonable speed

Observed behaviour: document viewpan zooms/unzooms from maximum zoom in
to maximum zoom out in maybe 10-15% of the height of the touchpad, i.e.
it is unusably oversensitive.

Also affects Draw and Writer, 100% reproducible. Other apps (Firefox, Eye of
Gnome/Image viewer) behave as expected (very usable zoom/unzoom sensitivity).

[Bug 1888504] [NEW] Two-finger touchpad scroll broken

2020-07-22 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Run Calc -> drag two fingers up, down, left or right slowly.

Expected behaviour: content pans in the direction of movement

Observed behaviour: no effect on viewport, sometimes at all, sometimes
after a sufficiently long drag, the viewport jumps/snaps to a different
part of the document, as if the entire "accumulated" movement happened
at once

The behaviour is easily reproducible in Calc and Draw, but does not
happen in Writer. Other applications (e.g. Firefox, Nautilus, GVim...)
work as expected, scrolling smoothly as fingers slide along the
touchpad.

[Bug 1888239] [NEW] cannot change default application to open XML files

2020-07-20 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

.xml file -> right click -> Properties -> Open With -> Related
Applications -> GVim -> "Set as default"

Expected behaviour: GVim shown as the "Default application" (instead of
Firefox, as is currently the case)

Observed behaviour: Firefox remains the default application

select "Text editor" instead, Firefox still remains the default).

[Bug 1887161] [NEW] sound does not switch to bluetooth speakers automatically after connecting

2020-07-10 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

I connect to a bluetooth speaker.

Observed behaviour: connection established, but sound still continues to
come from the built-in speakers and when looking at available sound
outputs in the gnome-control-center, there are no new outputs.

Expected behaviour: connection established, sound output switches to BT
speaker automatically, new sound output device visible in sound settings

Workaround: disconnect and reconnect a few times, after which everything
seems to work

The BT speaker is a actually the F900 2 Channel Amp Bluetooth Amplifier
feeding regular wired speakers behind it.

[Bug 1887160] [NEW] failed to connect to bluetooth speaker

2020-07-10 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Opened gnome-control-center, bluetooth section. A previously paired
device (speaker) listed and shown as disconnected. Clicked on it, got a
pop-up window for that device, clicked "connection".

Observed: the connection switch was flipped from "off" to "on" and back
in an instant.

Expected behaviour: the switch stays moves to "on" and after a slight
delay the connection is established.

Workaround: try several times in a row, until getting the expected
behaviour.

[Bug 1886642] [NEW] Error on graph run: "The xterm executable '' is missing."

2020-07-07 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Created a simple model with a file source and waterfall sink to check a
recorded signal's frequency. When I ran the model, I got the following
error:

The xterm executable '' is missing.
You can change this setting in your gnuradio.conf, in section [grc],
'xterm_executable'.
(This message is shown only once)

xterm is installed and "which xterm" says that it's at /usr/bin/xterm .
GNU Radio should detect xterm when being installed, set the necessary
setting and run without errors.

Also, the error message seems to be misleading (targetting a different
distribution?): I don't have a gnuradio.conf, but I do have a
/etc/gnuradio/conf.d/grc.conf which will probably do the trick.

In other words, a manual workaround is to edit grc.conf as suggested in
the error message, but a user should not have to do this.

[Bug 1873086] Re: sound stutters when playing on a bluetooth receiver

2020-04-18 Thread Tomislav
@Daniel Thank you, will see where I get with

sudo modprobe ath10k_core btcoex_enable=1 bt_ant_diversity=1

as seems to have been suggested under the related bug.

Will try 5GHz and disabling WiFi, but the latter can obviously only be a
temporary diagnostics step.

[Bug 1873086] [NEW] sound stutters when playing on a bluetooth receiver

2020-04-15 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

I can play via bluetooth from my laptop or my mobile phone. I have a set
of bluetooth headphones and bluetooth speakers.

Any combination of output with the smartphone as the player works, which
is as it should be.

Any combination of output with the laptop as the player is miserable:
sound stutters, sometimes randomly, sometimes seemingly when I touch the
laptop or come close to it...had similar or identical problems with a
previous Ubuntu laptop. Bluetooth audio seems to be in very bad shape.

[Bug 1670041] Re: Poor performance of Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac (rev 32) (Killer Wireless 1535)

2020-04-07 Thread Tomislav
Is there anything a Ubuntu 18.04 user (upgraded from the preinstalled
Dell XPS Ubuntu 16.04) can do without manually replacing kernels and
possibly compromising laptop bootability?

This is what I'm currently running:

$ uname -a
Linux dell-desktop 4.15.0-91-generic #92-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 28 11:09:48 UTC
2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is what iwconfig claims:

$ iwconfig
lono wireless extensions.

wlp2s0IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"AndroidAPCC99"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: 66:89:F1:8F:8C:99
  Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
  Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Power Management:off
  Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-24 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:51 Missed beacon:0

In practice, I get up to 20 Mb/s UL/DL when communicating with an FTP
server on my phone (both my laptop and the phone support 802.11ac).
Another laptop easily reaches 50 Mb/s in the same scenario.

[Bug 241604] Re: Maximum zoom in Evince is 400%

2018-02-04 Thread Tomislav
@Timothee What is ridiculous is making comments which sound very much
like entitlement, while expecting other people to do all the work for
free. Sure, this is a nuisance, but obviously not a very big one,
otherwise there would be more pressure and willingness to get it sorted
out. If it was that much of a problem for me, I'd take a look at the
code and propose a patch: sounds simple enough to do, but it's not
important enough to me.

As it is, "I'm going to switch to Windows and Adobe because I can't zoom
in more than 400% in a PDF" is a completely bizarre threat. If that's
all it takes, you'll be switching between operating systems faster than
socks, in which case, it doesn't matter anyway. Otherwise it's just
lashing out, which again doesn't matter (at best) or is counter-
productive (at worst).

[Bug 1594591] Re: Bluetooth audio isn't working properly!

2017-04-13 Thread Tomislav
I encounter sound over bluetooth stuttering as well. Ubuntu 14.04,
bluetooth in A2DP mode. I get the vague feeling that the stuttering gets
worse when the system is active, but sometimes it's the CPU, sometimes
the WiFi...sometimes no obvious reason.

I'm 3m away from a receiver in line of sight, FWIW.

Also, issue #1594939 sounds like it might be related.

Notice that in my case, it says "Xorg Tainted", where Gábor sees "Xorg Not

[Bug 1570484] Re: Resuming from suspend on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 4th gen does not work reliably

2017-02-24 Thread Tomislav
I also encounter random failures resuming from suspend on 14.04
("4.4.0-64-generic #85~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 20 12:10:54 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux"). Latitude E5570, fresh install (as of a
week ago). No blinking caps lock, though.

I just cycled through suspend-resume several times and it worked well,
so it's intermittent. I tried to switch to the first virtual terminal
(--F1) and restart (--) assuming it was just
the screen, but nothing happened, suggesting that it's not screen-
related. Haven't checked dmesg yet, though, but I will next time it
happens.

I also registered one "Unclaimed register detected after reading
register" event in /var/log/kern.log, but I don't believe it's related
as my machine froze a number of times this week, yet this event is
present in kern.log only once, 5 days ago.

[Bug 1590590] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Dell Latitude E7470 Ultrabook

2017-02-17 Thread Tomislav
Affects E5570 as well. I'm running a fully updated 14.04 machine (kernel
3.19.0-30-generic) and will try to make do with the nice workaround from
bagl032 (comment #30), but would very much appreciate a proper patch of
the LTS kernel because 1) the workaround doesn't work perfectly and 2)
I'd hate to have to upgrade the entire (LTS release) OS to get a driver
bugfix.

[Bug 225505] Re: Pidgin's auto-reconnect does not always reconnect

2016-03-01 Thread Tomislav
FWIW, I fail to see how this is seen as a "low priority" issue as people
forget that pidgin is disconnected (every other application that I use
reestablishes its connections automatically) and cannot be reached
during this time. The only way I see an issue could be more pressing is
if the application didn't work at all.

[Bug 939335] Re: Missing options to run at critical battery level as hibernate and suspend [Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2]

2015-12-05 Thread Tomislav
Critical low power behaviour appears to me to be completely broken:

- "hibernate" option shown in the menu, but disabled - why would it be shown if
not selectable?
- "shutdown" option available: what possible reason could the user have to shut
down the system when the battery is critically low? There will likely be loss
of information anyway (unless the user has a chance to save any files being
edited...?)...
- "suspend" option missing: it has been mentioned that "suspend" is actually
the default behaviour, but it doesn't work.
- "do nothing" option missing: why shouldn't it be possible to say "give me
every last particle of charge the hardware can deliver" when e.g. surfing the
web, listening to music, reading a book...?

I am reporting this on 14.04.

[Bug 1507224] [NEW] mplayer keyboard controls don't work with audio files

2015-10-17 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Observed keyboard hotkey behaviour:

- don't work with audio files with regular users or using sudo
- work perfectly with video files with regular users
- don't work with video files when using the -novideo option

Expected behaviour:

- should always work, for all types of (supported) files

Other notes:

- up to relatively recently (1 month?), everything was fine
- it may have something to do with window focus (mplayer creates a new window
for video files...)
- the following messages are always displayed, regardless of the -novideo
option:

"Cannot open file '/home/tna/.mplayer/input.conf': No such file or directory
Failed to open /home/tna/.mplayer/input.conf.
Cannot open file '/etc/mplayer/input.conf': No such file or directory
Failed to open /etc/mplayer/input.conf."

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit.

[Bug 1507224] Re: mplayer keyboard controls don't work with audio files

2015-10-17 Thread Tomislav
Forgot to add: this affects 2 machines and no custom keyboard hotkey
mapping was performed on either. Also, apparently, the mapping files are
only present in the mplayer package, but I'm using mplayer2 which
doesn't install them, presumably because it doesn't need them. But then,
the error messages seem to suggest otherwise.

[Bug 1272725] Re: [Upstream] LibreOffice Calc Format Cell Dialog is sometimes unusable

2015-09-04 Thread Tomislav
I don't have an upstream user account, so please don't mind me
commenting here:

Judging by upstream comments under #73115, a solution was supposed to be in
place for version 4.2.3.
I am running LO 4.2.8.2 (on Ubuntu 14.04) and I see the issue still present:
unpredictable transparent cell format windows when opend using the context menu.

Opening the format window using Ctrl-1 hadn't occurred to me before, but
it seems to reliably get around the issue. Thanks for the tip!

Still, this is quite a serious issue because if my own experience is
anything to go by (struggling with it for maybe a year now), a lot of
users may be getting a bad user experience for a long time...

[Bug 1230231] Re: gnome-sound-recorder does not record

2014-11-19 Thread Tomislav
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1157654 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1157654

Confirming:

'Record from input' offers only one option: Master
'Record as' offers no options: it is blank.

Although I'm a technical user, I must say that although the above
comments suggest it is a configuration issue, I don't see anything wrong
in sound settings. Whatsmore, it just used to work before I upgraded my
system from 12.04 to 14.04.

In short:

- sound recording should just work
- is there a temporary workaround I could use?

[Bug 354183] Re: devede stops immediately with conversion failed error

2013-02-08 Thread Tomislav
There is a simple enough workaround:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libav/+bug/969444/comments/10

As one of the users in the other bug report concluded, the workaround
worked for me but this should be fixed at the repository level. Users
should not be required to Google bug fixes.

[Bug 1018371] [NEW] Unable to open multiple files in Firefox from Nautilus at once

2012-06-27 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

Selected a number of XML files in Nautilus, open with - Firefox and
Firefox opens 3 out of 4 files. The 4th is missing and I see no pattern
in which file fails to open.

When I select just the missing file, I can open it in Firefox without a
problem. Also, the problem is not reproducible from the terminal
(firefox *.XML) so I imagine it has something to do with Firefox.

Not a big issue, but 100% repeatable: I don't imagine it should be
difficult to reproduce.

[Bug 1015790] Re: cannot resume from hibernate

2012-06-26 Thread Tomislav
@Joseph: it would be easier to do something like that if I had another
machine I didn't need as much to try it out on, but I do not. Maybe
someone else will come along with the same problem, but in a better
position to try out the latest kernel.

[Bug 1015791] Re: cannot configure machine to suspend below a battery threshold

2012-06-26 Thread Tomislav
@Patrick:

tomislav@tasha:~$ gnome-power-manager
gnome-power-manager: command not found
tomislav@tasha:~$

Apparently, it is not the same application. I can trigger it using the
Power icon in the System settings window.

I should also add that I appear to get better results by using dconf-
editor: under org-gnome-settings-daemon-plugins-power I was able to
tweak power settings to a degree...not sure yet if I've managed to
configure the machine to suspend when it has less than X% of battery
left
