[Bug 1063095] [NEW] system crashes on resume from suspend

2012-10-06 Thread Tony B
Public bug reported:

The system suspends properly when I select suspend from the power
menu, or when I close the lid on my laptop. However, when I try to
resume by pressing the power button or opening the laptop, the system
seems to start resuming properly, and a cursor appears on a black
screen, but then a few seconds later a black and white pattern appears,
with the cursor still visible and movable. This screen does not go away,
and the system does not appear to be responsive (other than the ability
to move the cursor), not even going into a soft shutdown from a press of
the power button. To recover from this, I have to force a hard shutdown
of the computer, and reboot that way.

At sporadic intervals the audio in all applications gets hung up and
skips like a broken record player. This has been observed in Google

Re: [Bug 579665] Re: [Acer Aspire 5315] Overheating triggers shutdown

2012-04-20 Thread Tony B
*Dear Christopher Penalver*

*
*I thank you for your email and must apologise for this slow reply: I have
recently been travelling and away from an internet connection.*
*
*
*The overheating issue has very recently disappeared as mysteriously as it
came. I'm now using the Kernel 3.2.0-2-486 - and it seems to have solved
my problem.*
*
*
*I hope this is of use to other Linux users.*

Tony B, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This
bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
 recently. As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementASPM a
patch has been issued to address overheating. Can you try with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
  Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.
This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

 Thanks in advance.

 Bug description:
  Dear Ubuntu people,

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, but I had the same problem with 9.10. Both of
these systems were installed on a partition.
Previously, I used Ubuntu 9.04 without problem, but this was NOT
 installed on a partition.
My laptop came with Windows Vista pre-installed: I do NOT experience this
 problem when running Vista.

  (1) After a few minutes from a cold start, my laptop overheats and
automatically shuts down. The Core Temperature Sensor indicates that it
shuts down at 100 deg C. Other temperature sensors do not report any
 abnormalities.
  (2) If I re-boot IMMEDIATELY, the cooling fan starts and the Core temp
quickly drops to approx 45 deg C, and I can run my laptop all day without
 any problems.
  (3) If I fail to re-boot immediately, or if I restart my computer before
the sensor indicates at least 95 deg C, the computer will again suddenly
shut down within only a few minutes due to overheating.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5315, but I've seen lots of posts on
various forums. Toshiba computers seem also prone to this problem
when running Ubuntu - and I have noted that Acer computers use Toshiba
  fans.

Everything I've read follows the same trend:
  (a) it seems that, when everything is cold or only warm, Ubuntu fails to
instruct the fan to run, so it doesn't.
  (b) if the computer is already hot when it's switched on, the fan works
perfectly. Presumably the computer has a separate thermostat to control
this, since we know that Ubuntu isn't switching it on.

I'm sure this has been reported millions of times before. It is a
major problem, and certainly one which prevents people recommending
  Ubuntu to others.

  Thanks regards,
  Tony

Re: [Bug 579665] Re: [Acer Aspire 5315] Overheating triggers shutdown

2011-12-08 Thread Tony B
Hello Haengcho

I'm glad you managed to update your BIOS successfully. However, this is a
risky procedure and shouldn't be necessary.

In any event, although it solves your problem, you haven't actually cured
the bug - merely ensured that it no longer affects your computer.

Regards,
Tony

I'd also like to thank everyone for all the valuable info... it really

I don't hold out much hope that this problem will ever be solved. To be

I'm now running LinuxMint 9, with the same overheating problems. And
 I've
had the same experience with LinuxMint Debian Edition (I dropped that o/s
because of update issues, but am contemplating trying it again as
apparently their updates now work ok).

It would be nice to find a cure, but, in the meantime, I hope my

No problem, I figured the master report for this bug needed an update

this gets addressed eventually, as your workaround would suggest that a
BIOS update may not entirely be necessary.

Re: [Bug 579665] Re: [Acer Aspire 5315] Overheating triggers shutdown

2011-12-07 Thread Tony B
I don't hold out much hope that this problem will ever be solved. To be
honest, I'd almost forgotten about other users, thinking that it might be
just a quirk of my machine.

I'm now running LinuxMint 9, with the same overheating problems. And I've
had the same experience with LinuxMint Debian Edition (I dropped that o/s
because of update issues, but am contemplating trying it again as
apparently their updates now work ok).

It would be nice to find a cure, but, in the meantime, I hope my workaround
is of assistance to others.

No problem, I figured the master report for this bug needed an update
since a couple users have reported the same issue recently. Hopefully
this gets addressed eventually, as your workaround would suggest that a
BIOS update may not entirely be necessary.

 Title:
[Acer Aspire 5315] Overheating triggers shutdown

 Status in NULL Project:
  Invalid
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

2011-12-06 Thread Tony B
Hello Phil. V

Thank you for taking the trouble to keep me up-to-date.
It seems this bug isn't going to get fixed.

I've also heard that a BIOS update might well solve the problem, but
everything I've read suggests that this is not for the faint-hearted. I
understand that fluctuations in electricity will affect the procedure and,
since our power supply here often cuts out without warning 2 or 3 times a
day, I'm certainly not going to risk it.

In the meantime, I'll continue to use my work-around, which is:

1. Boot up laptop and wait until the desktop is displayed.
2. Close laptop lid and wait approximately 10 seconds until the system goes
into suspend mode (on my Acer, the light showing that the laptop is
switched on changes from steady green to flashing red).
3. Open laptop lid, type password to come out of suspend. And, hey
presto, everything works ok with no overheating issues.

Thanks again for your response,
Regards,
Tony

2010-11-01 Thread tony b
Hi Fabio or To whom it may concern: I'm always having a problem with many
Linux Distro, sometimes Ubuntu - installing the Broadcom WLAN adaptor - it's
difficult to install for a first time linux user - Is there a graphical fix
to install this or any harware, because internet access out-of-the-box, is a
big deal. I have a HP-mini 1030nr netbook with Broadcom WLAN.

Also, I'm having compatibility issues with Start-up disk creator: after
successful creating Ubuntu and other Linux Distro, it wont load on start-up.
Ubuntu Distro is OK, most of the time. But, other Distro wont work on
start-up - It's hard to find a Live usb creator to run on Linux - most are
for Windows.

And the Lubuntu Distro-Maverick, will not install properly - no applications
loaded, after install.

Out-of-the-box and graphical install of hardware and fixes, is very
important to non-professional users, like me. Thanks alot for all your good
work - I love Linux!

[Bug 579665] Re: Overheating triggers shutdown

2010-10-14 Thread Tony B
I've recently discovered that I can make my overheating laptop problem
disappear. And this, in turn, solves the premature shut-down problem.

I noticed that, if I close the lid of my laptop, it goes into suspend-
mode. And the fan starts up correctly when I open the lid and continue
working, even if the laptop wasn't warm when I initially shut the lid.

So my new Start-Up routine is:
1. Boot up laptop and wait until the desktop is displayed.
2. Close laptop lid and wait approximately 10 seconds until the system goes
into suspend mode (on my Acer, the light showing that the laptop is switched
on changes from steady green to flashing red).
3. Open laptop lid, type password to come out of suspend. And, hey presto,
everything works ok with no overheating issues.

This certainly works for me, I hope this simple procedure is of some
assistance to others.

Cheers,
Tony B

[Bug 579665] Re: Overheating triggers shutdown

** Description changed:

  Dear Ubuntu people,

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, but I had the same problem with 9.10. Both of these
systems were installed on a partition.
Previously, I used Ubuntu 9.04 without problem, but this was NOT installed on
a partition.
My laptop came with Windows Vista pre-installed: I do NOT experience this
problem when running Vista.

  (1) After a few minutes from a cold start, my laptop overheats and
automatically shuts down. The Core Temperature Sensor indicates that it
shuts down at 100 deg C. Other temperature sensors do not report any
abnormalities.
  (2) If I re-boot IMMEDIATELY, the cooling fan starts and the Core temp
quickly drops to approx 45 deg C, and I can run my laptop all day without any
problems.
  (3) If I fail to re-boot immediately, or if I restart my computer before the
sensor indicates at least 95 deg C, the computer will again suddenly shut down
within only a few minutes due to overheating.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5315, but I've seen lots of posts on various
forums. Toshiba computers seem also prone to this problem when running
Ubuntu - and I have noted that Acer computers use Toshiba fans.

Everything I've read follows the same trend:
  (a) it seems that, when everything is cold or only warm, Ubuntu fails to
instruct the fan to run, so it doesn't.
  (b) if the computer is already hot when it's switched on, the fan works
perfectly. Presumably the computer has a separate thermostat to control this,
since we know that Ubuntu isn't switching it on.

I'm sure this has been reported millions of times before. It is a major
problem, and certainly one which prevents people recommending Ubuntu to
  others.

  Thanks regards,
  Tony

Re: [Bug 579665] Re: Overheating triggers shutdown

2010-05-13 Thread Tony B
Thanks very much, madbiologist. I've been told about a BIOS update before,
but I've also been warned that it could totally stuff up my computer. In
this part of the world, the electricity supply is very iffy at the best of
times, which I understand would make me more vulnerable to a problem during
a BIOS upgrade.

I don't wish to gamble on this basis -- I can think of better things to
spend my old age pension on (like food).

But thanks again for the thought.

 Bug description:
 Dear Ubuntu people,

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, but I had the same problem with 9.10. Both of
these systems were installed on a partition.
Previously, I used Ubuntu 9.04 without problem, but this was NOT installed
 on a partition.

 (b) if the computer is already hot when it's switched on, the fan works
perfectly. Presumably the computer has a separate thermostat to control
this, since we know that Ubuntu isn't switching it on.

I'm sure this has been reported millions of times before. It is a major
problem, and certainly one which prevents people recommending Ubuntu to
 others.

 Thanks regards,
 Tony

This error occurs when one of the installation or removal scripts
 (/var/lib/dpkg/info/PACKAGE.p*) is empty or corrupted.

 == HOW TO REPRODUCE ==
Install a package and emulates a system crash before 30 seconds:
 # apt-get install hello; sleep 20; echo b /proc/sysrq-trigger
 [simulates a system crash]
After reboot both installation and removal scripts are 0 bytes. You will
notice that hello.list was correctly written to disk because of the fsync
 call in dpkg/src/filesdb.c
 $ ls -l /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.*
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 323 2010-02-09 00:42 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.list
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2009-08-15 19:17
 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.postinst
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2009-08-15 19:17 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.prerm

If you replay the test but adding a sync before the system crash:
 # apt-get install hello; sync; echo b /proc/sysrq-trigger
After reboot the files are fine:
 $ ls -l  /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.*
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 323 2010-02-09 00:46 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.list
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 103 2009-08-15 19:17
 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.postinst
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 74 2009-08-15 19:17 /var/lib/dpkg/info/hello.prerm

If I adjust /proc/sys/vm/dirty_expire_centisecs to be below the sleep time,
( for exemple 1000 in the test above ) then data are correctly written to
 disk.

 == WORKAROUNDS ==
Execute the following commands in a terminal
(GNOME: Applications - Accessories - Terminal
KDE: KMenu - Applications - System - Terminal [Konsole] )

Workaround A: Remove the package and reinstall

 $ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/PACKAGE_VERSION.p*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge PACKAGE
 $ sudo apt-get clean
 $ sudo apt-get update

 Then reinstall the package

Workaround B: Finish the install when the package can't be removed

 $ sudo apt-get clean
 $ sudo aptitude download PACKAGE
 $ sudo dpkg --unpack ./PACKAGE_VERSION.deb
 $ sudo dpkg --configure PACKAGE

Replace PACKAGE with the package name which fails to install/remove.

2008-08-01 Thread Tony B - San Francisco
Having same problem, same log entries exactly, on an ACER Aspire 5050 -
except I don't seem to be working every few reboots. I'm going to try
rebooting a few times and hope for the best.
