[Bug 676486] Re: [needs-packaging] Apache Thrift

2019-01-11 Thread Tony Mancill
The Debian package is failing to build on Ubuntu with 1 test failure
that I don't yet grok. From the amd64 build logs:

make check-TESTS

I'm wondering if this might a difference in the compiler flags used
between Ubuntu in Debian, but that's just a guess at this point. I'll
take a look, but it might not be until after the Debian Buster freeze.

It appears that your DISPLAY is not set correctly, or that the user you
are using to invoke cssh cannot connect to your Xserver. Ensure that
you can invoke "xterm" and get a window. If that works but cssh does
not, you can try increasing debug with:

Hi Vincent,

At this point, I think the problem is that the .Xauthority file is being
corrupted by some other process than clusterssh. After searching a bit,
it seems like there are many (somewhat scattered, not always
reproducible) reports of issues with .Xauthority files being corrupted.
The only common theme I thought I saw emerging is related to
someone/something running an X app via sudo (instead of gksudo).

If you can come up with steps to reproduce the reported behavior, that
would be helpful.

Tony, first of all, thank you for investigating this problem.

What is missing from the bug description is that this problem is not
omnipresent, but arises spontaneously. That's why you do not see it with
a new and vanilla installation. All I can report is that it may occur at
any time after cssh has worked fine, and I always could solve it
(remove the problem) it by deleting my .Xauthority file.

I agree that corruption of .Xauthority may be the cause, however, it is
unclear what this corruption is, when it occurs, which agent causes it,
and why cssh seems to be the only client that seems to object to this.

Sorry if this is not very helpful, though.

Hello Rüdiger,

Actually, this is helpful in further classifying the issue (and so I
know that I need to try harder to reproduce it locally... :) Thank you

clusterssh is just trying to open a X client, and the error indicates a
short read from .Xauthority. So I suspect something bad is happening to
your .Xauthority file.

A couple questions:

1) Do other X clients (e.g. xterm) work in this situation? That is,
from the same command window where you're launching cssh, can you launch
an xterm successfully?

2) What does xauth think about the file? Can it open it? Does it think
it's healthy. For example, you can try the info and list commands
to query it.

 tony@boson:~$ xauth -f ~/.Xauthority
 Using authority file /home/tony/.Xauthority
 xauth info
 Authority file: /home/tony/.Xauthority

Hi,

Please try defining your clusters in the file ~/.clusterssh/clusters.

From the clusterssh manpage:

 FILES
/etc/clusters, $HOME/.clusterssh/clusters
These files contain a list of tags to server names mappings. When
any name is used on the command line it is checked to see if it is
a tag. If it is a tag, then the tag is replaced with the list of
servers. The formated is as follows:

tag [user@]server [user@]server [...]

In addition to Gregor's response regarding the ordering of tangible vs.
virtual dependencies, it is difficult to know a priori what package
names (outside of those distributed directly by Debian or Ubuntu) will
satisfy the JRE/JDK dependency. If you would like to use a non-distro
JRE/JDK, you can use equivs (or a similar mechanism) to ensure that the
package will satisfy java6-runtime.

Yes, Duncan Ferguson has done a nice job with clusterssh. It looks like
the support for command has been pulled out of the configuration file

In the meantime, can you achieve the same functionality with the

be useful to support this via the configuration file.

Hello Rüdiger,

Thank you for the bug report and pointing out this behavior. It is a
bit strange - it appears that the upstream author pruned the support for
the command configuration option, but left the empty in place.

It's a simple patch to restore the functionality. I'll look at

Re: [Bug 884129] [NEW] Clusterssh problem (cssh) Perl issue

2011-10-31 Thread Tony Mancill
This is an example of the maxim no good deed goes unpunished. It all started
with a bug report in Debian a while back asserting that the clusterssh package
should have a binary called clusterssh (which is treated as synonymous with
cssh for Debian/Ubuntu, but isn't known to upstream). The issue has been
patched in the most recent upload of clusterssh to Debian unstable.

[Bug 749269] Re: jabref version 2.6+ds-4 failed to build on i386

2011-04-03 Thread Tony Mancill
The (automated) log snippet in the bug report is a red herring, as those
are only deprecation warnings. Reviewing the full build logs, the
compilation failure is due to the BstParser, which is turn due to using
antlr3 3.0.1 [1], but allowing it to satisfy the build dependency
antlr3 (= 3.2).

The Debian source package for jabref handled the transition to antlr 3.2
just before the freeze for squeeze. In order to build against the older
version of antlr3, you can try removing debian/patches/05_antlrv32.patch
and restoring debian/patches/05_antlr.patch. (If you go that path,
you'll need Debian source package 2.6+ds-3 for the 05_antlr.patch). Or
you can move forward and build against a true antlr3 3.2.

I realize that it's late in the natty release cycle, and so going to the
2.7~beta1 is probably not an option (it requires a newer version of
libpdfbox as well), and so you may want to have a look at Debian #615251
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=615251). The bug
exists in 2.6+ds, and there is a patch in the BTS.

Hope that helps,
tony

And from that package's changelog:

  * Revert back to 3.0.1+dfsg-4ubuntu2 for Maverick, since this version
introduces too many new main dependencies, too late in the cycle
(LP: #614393). Remaining changes:
- Runtime depend on java2-runtime-headless rather than java2-runtime.
  * Drop antlr3-gcj to a Suggests

We would be willing to run an instrumented/debug version of lftp in
production if it would help diagnose the problem. As it is, someone is
getting paged every time one of these jobs fails.

ripperX gave me all tracks encoded and properly named, but without ID3-tag

 solution.
 a) using dynamically allocated memory *is* overkill. And even if it has
little to none performance impact in this case, if all bugs would be fixed
like this, I'd still be sitting here watching my box boot instead of writing
 this.
 b) according to red book standard (available for $300 or so :() the number of
tracks on a compact disc is limited to 99 (ever wondered why your CD player
has a two-digit display only?), so a static char buffer of size 3 is
sufficient. If you use snprintf to limit the number of characters you're fine.
So please refrain from 'spoiling' my favourite mp3-encoder by using malloc to
 fix this bug.

Re: [Bug 662654] Re: Vertical lines in characters

2010-10-25 Thread Tony Mancill
I've done some testing on Ubuntu 10.10 and the problem is immediately
reproducible as reported - i.e. once the user sets System - Preferences
- Appearance - Visual Effects to Extra

A temporary work-around is to hit Alt-r (retile) whenever the
garbage/vertical characters get too annoying. I've experimented with a
patch that automatically retiles every time the user sends a carriage
return. This isn't ideal - the vertical characters still accumulate
while a command is being typed, and it won't help much inside vi or
other editors - but may help folks some until the cause of the issue can
be addressed. If you'd like to try it locally, edit
/usr/share/perl5/App/ClusterSSH.pm and add retile_hosts(); after line 851.

Related to the vertical characters there appear to be other drawing
issues with the effects turned on. For example, some of the status line
in vi is cut off on my terminal.

It's certainly reasonable to assume that you wouldn't have to do that.
I haven't observed this issue yet, but once I'm able to reproduce it,
I'll post back if there is a configuration setting or command-line
option that will help. Otherwise, I suspect that this has to do with
some poor interaction between perl-tk and the default display settings

the OS rendering the terminal content incorrectly.

Re: [Bug 660236] [NEW] clusterssh no longer respects setting username

2010-10-13 Thread Tony Mancill
Hi Graeme:

This issue was addressed in the Debian package in June, but

clusterssh (4.00.05-2) unstable; urgency=medium (closes important bug)

  * Add patch to restore --username/-l option. (Closes: #587378)

I believe you should be able to install the current version of the package from
Debian without any dependency issues. You can retrieve here:

As of the release in 10.10, this no longer works. As well, all the other
options specified in the man page fail to work either, including
--username (the long form of the -l flag), or setting the LOGNAME
 environment variable.

The only form that does still work is specifying u...@host individually
for each hostname, which is incredibly cumbersome.

I've tested on 10.04 and this bug doesn't occur when using ripperX to
encode to OGG. The issue seems to be when id3lib writes a string longer
than one character to ID3FID_TRACKNUM when writing to an MP3.

I'm still trying to sort out why the issue doesn't exist in Debian sid.

Hi Ben,

Does the problem exist when running another window manager? I suspect the issue
may lie in the interaction between perl-tk and the WM, or in a change to the
terminal emulator being used. It sounds as if the issue is occurring when CSSH
attempts to open a terminal.

Thank you,
Tony

 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: clusterssh

 Release: Ubuntu 9.10 x64
 Package version: 3.26-1
 Perl version: 5.10.0-24ubuntu4

Symptoms: upon starting clusterssh with a host list of 1 or more, or
starting clusterssh and manually opening a host, cssh will start
consuming massive amounts of memory and not performing the requested
task. For instance, this is output from top approximately 5 seconds
after running cssh hostname (or specifying a host after cssh is
already running). Note RES and SHR:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
   4837 username 20 0 2126m 2.0g 416 D 62 52.0 0:24.66 cssh 0

Entering debug 4 in the configuration file does not yield any output
when cssh is run from a terminal. If the process is not killed quickly,
it will hang the system when it runs out of RAM and VM.

This problem consistently replicates itself across reboots. It started
to occur just recently without any csshrc changes; I'm using the stock
 csshrc file with cluster definitions.

Additionally, I am running the awesome window manager, and the
unattended-upgrades package is installed (potentially narrowing down how
 this regression occurred).

This is similar to how it behaves under XFCE4. You can try adjusting

seems to help. You might need to adjust terminal_reserve_top as well.

2007-10-17 Thread Tony Mancill
I finally got around to trying this last night as well, using the latest
fglrx available from ATI. It did change the behavior of my system, as it

to reboot.

Laurent Bonnaud wrote:

Thank you for the hint! However it does not solve the problem. This
problem is not related to the fglrx kernel module at all. Even if I
boot the laptop without the fglrx module, the suspend/hibernate problem
is still there. I applied this patch nevertheless because it may be
useful to solve resume problems (wake-up from suspend/hibernate) if I
ever manage to suspend/hibernate this laptop.

2007-10-16 Thread Tony Mancill
Is it possible this is the same as bug 133363 [0], with a fix here [1]?
There is a is fix posted there, but I haven't been unable to test it yet
due to some other complications. First off, module-assistant thinks
that the name of the fglrx drivers source package is fglrx-kernel-src,
when it is actually fglrx-kernel-source. Secondly, after extracting
the sources by hand, the build fails.

2006-08-07 Thread Tony Mancill
Public bug reported:

xubuntu installs hang at 69% reproducibly on my Thinkpad 600X. I'm not
sure how to go about troubleshooting this problem. The hang isn't
complete - i.e. you can CTRL-ALT-F2 to get out of the GUI and get to a
command-line, and even enter a command, but no output will be produced.
(For example, I've tried to get a ps listing on one of the virtual
consoles), and it never produces any output.)

Oddly enough, ubuntu 6.06 installs fine on this hardware (it's just kind
of slow on a 500MHz PIII).
