Hello Brian

Problem resolved: I've tested and confirmed that one of the two memory
cards on the PC is faulty. Hence the problems when memory use was more
intensive, e.g. booting, using Gimp or Firefox!

New set of memory cards is due to arrive tomorrow - PC is currently
running with just one memory card (1 GiB) and exhibits none of the
previous faults.

Sorry to have added unnecessarily to your burden.

[Bug 994640] [NEW] Crashed during installation from a disk.

2012-05-04 Thread Tony Wood
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 overnight and it appeared to work in the
morning. Computer began to crash randomly but would reboot. I tried updating
but although updates downloaded into cache, they did not complete; I found my
computer constantly downloading the same updates.
I downloaded the .iso and made a live DVD. My 'Home' folder is in a separate
partition so I did not format that when I booted off the live disk I burned.
Stopped with error message.
I checked the list of bugs reported and there was one suggesting that an
unformatted 'Home' partition could be a problem. IIRC it was listed as 'fixed'
so I downloaded the .iso again and burned a second live disk using my netbook
and an external DVD drive, hoping that .iso might have been updated.
I have a backup of the PC's 'Home' partition so this time allowed installer on
PC to format all three partitions (root, swap and Home) using third option
regarding partitioning screen.
Same outcome.
The netbook upgrade to 12.04 64-bit from the first live disk was successful, so
I have that for day-to-day use.

[Bug 824921] Re: Unable to login without logging into the terminal first

2011-10-19 Thread Tony Wood
If you are having problems logging onto the new Ubuntu 11.10. Then give
this a go:

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1
login
sudo chmod 777 -R /tmp
sudo reboot

we have 3 machines with this problem. we have had a go with most of the post
that people have published.
What fixed it for us (bad practise I know, but for now we can login)

[Bug 282825] Re: winbindd stops and takes up 60%-100% CPU

2010-09-14 Thread Tony Wood
Possible fix:
Greetings: We have been getting CPU 40-50% for months on winbind. I have
finally got of my backside as had a go at looking for a fix. I have just done
the following commands and the CPU dropped to 1% It basically re-joins the
Domain, even though we already have a Server account in the AD

sudo kinit administra...@your-ad-domain-name.net
net ads join -U Administrator

Good luck
Tony

[Bug 410887] Re: alsa-mixer.c: Your kernel driver is broken: it reports a volume range from 18.00 dB to 18.00 dB which makes no sense

2009-11-29 Thread Tony Wood
Greetings again. As promised:

I did this and it worked first time. Logitech 9000 on Ubuntu 9.10

Remove skype first with sudo dpkg -r skype

Then run the following as one line

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
   --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
  sudo apt-get -q update
  sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring
  sudo apt-get -q update

Then install skype
sudo apt-get install skype
