[Bug 219950] Re: Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new

2008-05-14 Thread Veichtlbauer
Thanks for the link, I fixed the problem myself by altering xorg.conf.
Just in case someone does not know where to find it, its in /etc/X11/

Add the following lines to the "Device" section:

Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"

Save the file, then restart the X server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

[Bug 221332] [NEW] The tiemu package is heavily outdated

2008-04-24 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tiemu

Why is the tiemu package still stuck in version 2 of tiemu? The emulator is
still being updated and got some nice improvements over the last couple of
years. Version 2 is still being maintained (synced with Debian at least).
Latest announcements: http://lpg.ticalc.org/prj_tiemu/news.html

[Bug 219950] Re: Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new

2008-04-24 Thread Veichtlbauer
Thanks for your comment, but in this case, I am not so sure it is solely
a nvidia-glx-new problem, because the dpi seem to be correctly detected
by X:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1680 x 1050
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (129, 127); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config

Given the facts that the screen is 15.4", the resolution 1680x1050, and the
aspect ration 16:10, the following calculation can be made (yes, I know it is
not elegant, but it gets to the point):

(16x)²+(10x)²=15.4²
which resolves to
x=0.8161

screen width = 16*x = 13.0592
screen height = 10*x = 8.16198

dpi(x) = 1680/13.0592 = 128.645
dpi(y) = 1050/8.16198 = 128.645

Given this result, the DPI set by X to 129,127 is pretty damn close, and should
not have such a huge impact.

[Bug 220500] [NEW] Intel Q35/82566DM network connection is disabled on reboot

2008-04-21 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

Working on a machine with Intel Q35 Express Chipset Family, the 82566DM
gigabit network connection is disabled/non-functional on reboot of
ubuntu. Resetting the IP address or subnet mask via the network manager
or ifconfig re-enables the connection. Until this is done, you get
"destination not reachable" errors en masse.

This is a major showstopper, since likewise-open will fail to
authenticate against LDAP/Active Directory when the network connection
is broken, thus rendering the whole machine rather useless for the user.

[Bug 219957] [NEW] Default 16bit color depth on nVidia Quadro 140

2008-04-20 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

After doing a default installation of Hardy release candidate on my Dell D830
with a nVidia Quadro NVS 140, the X color depth was set to 16 bit by default,
resulting in some quite ugly background picture. Editing the xorg.conf was the
only way to switch to 24 bit color depth.
I would suggest fixing this bug, but a much more generic solution - like
including color depth settings in the display resolution applet - would be very
much welcome.

[Bug 219950] [NEW] Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new

2008-04-20 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

The following happens on a Dell D830 laptop with the nVidia Quadro 140:

After installing Hardy Release candidate, the login screen fonts for
entering the username and password looks fine. Then, I downloaded the
nvidia-glx-new package to make use of accelerated 3D. After rebooting
the machine, the font in the password box is extremely big. At first,
this seemed to be a duplicate of some other bugs reported here, but
changing the xorg.conf did not actually help the problem. After
reverting to the nv drivers and reconfiguring X, everything was back to
normal.

Maybe it is worth mentioning the system 15" screen has a resolution of
1680x1050, so its probably related to the high DPI?

Hardy had all updates applied as of the time of writing.
