[Bug 784828] Re: Using Light DM throws up startup screen during password prompts

2011-07-07 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Hi,

I confirm that it's ldm - LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) display
manager.

I had to uninstall it first using the terminal because it made reporting
this bug impossible. Whenever I tried to fill in some words in the
fields of the bug report page, I'd get thrown back to the startup
screen.

2011-05-21 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
I'm can't be 100% certain but I do recall clearly that this problem
didn't exist until the update.

For one, scrolling through the list of download files in amule didn't
produce any lag in the past. I have attached a screenshot of what
appears on my screen when I do that.

Absolutely. Normally, if there's been an interruption, such as a bad
internet connection, the system would roll back the changes. In this
case, it didn't.

In my case, it was not due to any internet connection failure - the
system was missing some updates.

I should have run the update before upgrading to the next version, but I
forgot to do that in that instance.

[Bug 734960] [NEW] akregator crashes upon startup

2011-03-14 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: akregator

The app crashes everytime I start it up.

I have managed to duplicate the problem by copying the data files in
/.kde/share/apps/akregator to another computer. It seems that the
files have somehow been corrupted by the app, even though I had shut the
app down cleanly before the problem surfaced.

I have discovered that the problem is caused by a corrupted .mk4 file.
Isolating and removing the offending feed file using a cut and paste
approach with a file manager allowed me to solve the crash problem
without losing my data.

[Bug 730225] Re: grub-install trashes ntfs partition when sector 32 of the hard disk is occupied by Adobe FlexNet

2011-03-12 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Hi bsfmig and billbear,

In my case, chkdsk didn't work as even Windows XP couldn't recognise my
partition. For chkdsk to work, a partition must first be recognised as
a Windows partiton, be it NTFS, FAT16 or FAT32. My corrupted partition
was recognised as a raw filesystem.

Also, I do not have FlexNet installed.

In my case, the only utility that worked to repair the partition was
TestDisk (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/TestDisk).

Using this utility, I recovered the MFT.

Perhaps this might offer a clue as to what is going on.

[Bug 730225] Re: grub-install trashes ntfs partition when sector 32 of the hard disk is occupied by Adobe FlexNet

2011-03-12 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Hi billbear,

I don't know how I got infected with FlexNet. All the while, grub
hadn't be causing any problems and nothing on my Windows system had
changed, with the exception of a few updates.

You do think that changes in grub2 caused this, don't you? Well, I
think so too.

Yes, I did try chkdsk. I booted into the recovery console using the
Windows setup disk. The partition was corrupted.

At this moment, I do not have access to that dual boot machine, but I'll
let you know once I've tried your suggestion. Thanks.

I needed to boot into Windows to play a game and realised that I

Windows partition was still corrupted.

Again, I used Acronis to recover the Windows partition.

One thing I've noted is that this problem only started occurring when I
upgraded to Natty. The previous 2 versions of Ubuntu did not give me
the same problem whenever grub2 was updated. In the worst case, I would
only lose my Windows entry in the grub menu, which could be easily
recovered by booting into Linux and running update-grub2 in a terminal
window.

http://chanweiyee.blogspot.com/2009/09/windows-missing-in-grub-2-menu-
ubuntu.html

Might there have been any changes in grub2 for Natty that might have
caused this problem?

2010-12-11 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Desktop reverts to no visual effects after visual effects applied.

1. I right-clicked on the desktop which brought up the
gnome-appearance-properties window.
2. Under the Visual Effects tab, I selected the Extra option and was prompted
to keep or discard settings.
3. I selected Keep Settings and closed the gnome-appearance-properties window.
4. Once again, I right-clicked on the desktop to bring up the
gnome-appearance-properties window but noticed that the visual effect selected

My sources.list file was modified by update-manager due despite an
unrealised upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1. I have restored the
original sources.list and I'm now fixing the problem.

[Bug 687542] [NEW] Update-manager does not restore original sources.list when upgrade fails

2010-12-08 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Update-manager does not restore original sources.list when upgrade
fails. An upgrade to 11.04 was attempted, without realisation that the
system was missing some updates. As such, the upgrade did not
actualise. However, the /etc/apt/sources.list file was not reverted to
the original one, thus resulting in some dependency problems when an
update was run later on.

The original repositories file had to be manually restored from the
sources.list.save file.

[Bug 686555] [NEW] Restoring file from Trash Bin causes pcmanfm to Shut Down

2010-12-07 Thread Wei-Yee Chan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmanfm

Note: This applies to files on external USB drives only. Local files
are *not* affected. This problem does not exist in the previous version
of Ubuntu, that is 10.10.

Restoring file deleted by pcmanfm from the Trash Bin using pcmanfm
causes the application to shut down. The files do not get restored as a
result. Cutting and pasting the deleted files back to the original
directory produces weird full path filenames.
