Thanks for the request. On an updated Natty, no GPU lockup, since last
post #13, nothing in log files either.

[Bug 364514] Re: cpu frequency is reset to maximum after resume from suspend if governor is userspace

2010-10-14 Thread William Davis
@Fabio: We did what you asked months ago, and yet another release
(10.10) has come and gone with this bug still a problem. Although
confirmed, its importance remains undecided and it has not yet been
assigned to anybody. I wish I were a competent coder, but the only way
I have to contribute to the Ubuntu community is to give feedback to
developers by way of bug reports. Is there any other information that
can be provided by me that will speed the process along?

[Bug 656631] Re: resume from suspend does not initialize the display on 2.6.35 kernel

2010-10-13 Thread William Davis
I just retested suspend on my system, and it works now. There was a
kernel upgrade from 2.6.35-33 to 2.6.35-34 (currently using
2.6.35-22-generic #34-Ubuntu). Of course cpufreq is still stuck at the
lowest step (800 Mhz) upon resume... but that is another bug.

@doesntcount - have you upgraded to the 2.6.35-34 kernel? Did it fix
your problem?

@Greg - your problem sounds quite different from what doesntcount
reported and I also experienced. It might warrant a separate bug report
if one has not already been open.

[Bug 364514] Re: cpu frequency is reset to maximum after resume from suspend if governor is userspace

2010-07-16 Thread William Davis
Thank you for looking into this. I'm uploading two sets of the
requested files (in a single archive) One set after a fresh boot, and
the second after a suspend/resume cycle. I'm currently using the
2.6.34-020634-generic kernel from Ubuntu mainline. The official kernel
shows the same symptoms.

Again, any further assistance I can provide shall be yours on request.

[Bug 364514] Re: cpu frequency is reset to maximum after resume from suspend if governor is userspace

2010-07-16 Thread William Davis
@Fabio: I'm sorry... I didn't mention that I'm using a fully up-to-date
Lucid install. Also, in my case, CPU frequency is set to the minimum on
my system after a suspend/resume with the default ondemand governor.
Interestingly, I can switch to Performance, Conservative,
Powersave, and any of the Userspace settings with expected results.
But when I switch back to Ondemand it is again stuck at the minimum
frequency (800 MHZ on my Intel Core 2 Duo P8700). Again, thank you for
looking into this annoying bug.

@Martin Pitt -- Keep in mind that this bug is a blocker for those who

The attached patch is a back-ported version of
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=26030 -- I can confirm
that it applies cleanly to 2.6.32-21.32, compiles without a problem. On
my system, all tested ACPI functions (Bluetooth and WiFi keyboard
switches work, AC/Battery changes in status detected. I haven't tested
suspend/resume via lid closing yet).

If somebody can test this patch on a system effected by the boot

I hope?)

I ran a diff against the patch I created (see comment #9) and the patch
that you have posted at the link in comment #11, since the former did
not result in a serious kernel problem. The only difference that I
can see that would be of any consequence is where I used u32 bits, u64
*value64, you used u32 bits, acpi_integer *value64 (lines 41 and 47
respectively). BUT, I am most definitely not a coder, so I'm attaching

[Bug 526354] Re: [Dell Studio 1537] temperature sensors and fan stop working following suspend/resume

2010-04-02 Thread William Davis
I believe this bug is a duplicate of Bug #524956. The upstream bug is
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14667

As I noted in bug 524956, this regression effects more than just fans
and temperature sensors. On my machine, it renders the Bluetooth and
WiFi kill switches inoperable (resulting in the built-in bluetooth to be
permanently off and WiFi to be permanently on). Also, the laptop lid
state is not detected.

[Bug 524956] Re: Dell Studio 1555 - ACPI thermal sensors do not work after resume

2010-03-20 Thread William Davis
Please note: this bug does not only effect thermal sensors. It effects
almost all things that might require ACPI. For example, The keyboard
WiFi / Bluetooth/Webcam on/off switches and lid detection buttons also
do not work with current (Lucid Beta 1) kernel. I can confirm that
reversing commit 6a63b06f3c494cc87eade97f081300bda60acec7 fixes all
those issues on my System76 Pangolin (PanP5) when compiling the
2.6.32-9.13 kernel under Karmic. I have not tested the fix in Lucid,
but I can't imagine it not working there as well.

There is a patch for this problem, but I have not been successful
applying it to a 2.6.32 source tree. I believe the patch is for 2.6.33.
Perhaps the best solution is to backport that patch to 2.6.32-* (see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14667#c89 ). It seems pretty
clear that this bug effects more than just one or two laptop models and
needs to be fixed before Lucid becomes final.

since disabling my exchange account, I've had no further instability
with Evolution.

[Bug 445186] Re: cpu-freq applet has set wrong frequency upon resume from suspend

2009-11-02 Thread William Davis
I am having a similar experience since upgrading (both in-place upgrade
and clean install) to Karmic. Additionally (and far more problematic)
when I suspend with the ondemand governor active, the CPU becomes stuck
at the lowest step (800 MHz for my P8700 CPU). All other governors --
conservative, userspace, powersave, performance -- behave as expected
after a suspend, but the instant I switch back to ondemand, it is back
to 800 MHz. Only a reboot corrects the problem. I can find nothing
unusual in the output of cpufreq-info either before or after a
suspend.

Please let me know what additional information I can provide to help get
this bug fixed.

System76 Pangolin Professional (PanP5)
P8700 Intel Core 2 Duo
4 G DDR2 RAM
NVidia G105M Graphics Adapter

I can't think of any other system information that would be relevant.

[Bug 455112] Re: VirtualBox performance is much worse when Intel VT-x is enabled

2009-11-02 Thread William Davis
Well, I had THOUGHT that running with just one CPU defined in VirtualBox
was a fix for me, but apparently, it is not. While it is a huge
improvement over defining 2 CPU's, once I try to do anything that needs
a little horse-power, everything goes down hill. Today, I was testing a
PowerPoint presentation because I'm guest lecturing next week and have
no choice but to use the university's computers with MS PowerPoint 2007
-- which I have installed in my XP VM. I use some embedded videos. My
virtualized XP became painfully slow and was barely responsive. I
couldn't finish testing the presentation until I got to my office later
in the morning, completely defeating the purpose of having VirtualBox at
all. VERY disappointing.

[Bug 455112] Re: VirtualBox performance is much worse when Intel VT-x is enabled

2009-10-30 Thread William Davis
I can confirm that this problem still exists with VirtualBox 3.0.10
(PUEL). Also, my experience is the same as Fale's. I was able to run
WinXP in VirtualBox 3.0.8 (PUEL) with VT-x turned on 2 CPU's without
an issue.

[Bug 455112] Re: VirtualBox performance is much worse when Intel VT-x is enabled

2009-10-23 Thread William Davis
michal: How many virtual CPU's do you have for your VM? Through
experimentation, I've just discovered that I can get good performance
with VT-x enabled if I set the number of CPU's to 1 on my Core 2 Duo
machine (P8700). I was able to set it to 2 CPU's under Jaunty without a
problem -- but the performance with it set to 1 CPU in Karmic is
excellent, so I don't know if this is a bug or a feature.

[Bug 456339] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in camel_store_get_folder_info()

2009-10-21 Thread William Davis
This time, evolution didn't crash... it just hung whist fetching
messages, requiring me to kill the process (using xkill). Here is the
backtrace from that session. The more I watch what is going on, the
more I think it has something to do with the evolution-exchange plugin
(see bug #456642) since the trouble all seems to occur when accessing my
exchange account. I've disabled my exchange account to see if that
stops the instability that I've been seeing since the last batch of
updates which also included updates to evolution.

[Bug 444881] Re: [Karmic] Battery monitor applet doesn't show battery remaining time

2009-10-18 Thread William Davis
I can confirm this bug on a System76 Pangolin Performance 5 (PanP5).
I'm getting percentage information, but no time estimate. IBAM also
reports:

$ ibam -b
Bios:0:00:00
Battery time left: 0:00:00
Adapted battery time left: 0:00:00

Recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_ACPI_AC=m corrected this problem in
Jaunty, but has no effect in Karmic.

[Bug 133168] Re: multisync-plugin-evolution cannot conect to remote calendar

2009-07-04 Thread William Davis
While I can successfully sync with calendars and contacts located On
This Computer, I have not been able to sync with my exchange calendars.
As reported above, selecting Make available for offline use does not
solve the problem. The same issue is present for syncing my exchange
contacts (although this is not nearly as problematic for me). This may
be an upstream issue (see: http://www.opensync.org/ticket/510 )

Ubuntu Version: Jaunty (9.04)
Evolution: 2.26.1
Evolution Exchange Connector: 2.26.0-0ubuntu3

[Bug 94089] Re: knetworkmanager crashes on login

2007-05-27 Thread William Davis
This problem seemed to be fixed using a fresh Kubuntu 7.04 final
installation. However, I am now experiencing the original reporter's
symptoms on each and every login when KNetworkManager attempts to
connect to a secured network (WPA or WPA2). KWallet opens and
KNetworkManager disappears leaving a blank space in the system tray. If
I logout/login, KNetworkManager appears and I can select my wireless
network and connect without a problem.

[Bug 92777] Re: Problem installing sl-modem package module not found

2007-05-03 Thread William Davis
Ok, mattsteven's suggestion worked a treat! I downloaded and manually
built and installed the package from linmodems
(slmodem-2.9.11-20070430). I then installed sl-modem-daemon from the
ubuntu feisty repository (2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu1). It did not
work initially, however I noted his comment regarding the Dell Inspiron
6400. I am using a Dell Inspiron E1505, which is basically the same
machine. After editing /etc/default/sl-modem-daemon to change
SLMODEMD_DEVICE=auto to SLMODEMD_DEVICE=hw:0 and then a reboot, my modem
came to life! Tested using wvdialconf and kppp. BRILLIANT, mattsteven!

This, of course, SHOULD work using the sl-modem-source package in the
feisty repositories, so the bug still stands.
