[Bug 1871781] [NEW] gdk_drawing_context_get_cairo_context: assertion 'GDK_IS_DRAWING_CONTEXT (context)' failed Segmentation fault

[Bug 375242] [NEW] Wireless: iwlagn incorrectly says kill switch on

2009-05-11 Thread zulu
Public bug reported:

On a Dell E6500, after unsuspending my laptop, I noticed my WiFi and 3G
cell card LEDs were off. Tried hitting moving the switch on the side
that enables both, and only the 3G LED came on.

/var/log/messages shows the iwlagn kernel module thinks that:

kernel: [347888.386364] iwlagn: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
kernel: [347888.386370] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking
to work.

However, the switch is on.

Resolved completely in software by first removing modules: 'modprobe -r
iwlagn; modprobe -r mac80211; modprobe -r cfg80211'.

Then did 'modprobe iwlagn' followed by 'ifup wlan0'.

Works fine after that.

[Bug 350776] Re: jockey backend crashed when trying to install nvidia driver

2009-04-26 Thread zulu
Follow up to my above comment: Disabling the local cdrom repository in
my Synaptic settings seems to have worked around this problem.

To summarize:
-- go to System-Administration-Synaptic Package
Manager-Settings-Repositories and uncheck the cdrom with Ubuntu 9.04
'Jaunty Jackalope' checkbox.
-- killed 'cdrom' process that was hung above
-- Run System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects to use Extra and
trigger the driver search. Waited for a few minutes; saw some activity in 'top'
-- rebooted after it was done

After reboot, nVidia driver works, and I can change my Appearance -
Visual Effects settings.

I did notice my wireless connection (wlan0; Intel PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN
[Shiloh] using 'iwlagn' driver ) had trouble right after I did this,
and I had to disable and re-enable it in Network Manager before it
finally reconnected. Not sure if this is related, but that's what I
observed.

[Bug 367721] [NEW] Usability: too many wireless networks makes it hard to find and pick the one you want

2009-04-26 Thread zulu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Near my apartment building, there are almost 50 wireless networks.

I have my own hidden SSID, but it sorts last. So any time I want to
connect, or select one of the menu items at the bottom (Hidden networks,
VPN, Create New ..) it's a slow process of trying to scroll through.
This was more true when I was first setting up my new Ubuntu install and
had some probs connecting (vs. now where things are working and I don't
need to look at the menu often). I also plan to move between about 5
locations with different access points (home, work, friend's places,
etc.) and will need to manage these easily.

I would suggest:

1. An option to connect to a new network you just defined (from the
Network Connections popup reached by the Edit Connections Menu OR
System- Preferences - Network Connections), or one that you had
created before. I'm reminded of Vista where it seems it is worse, but
stems from the same problem: the editing of network definitions is
treated as completely separate from the act of trying to connect, yet
that's typically the reason you're editing/defining it -- so you can
connect to it.

2. An quick menu that shows all the nets you've defined, marking which
ones are available and allowing you to pick one of them OR optionally to
list all available networks you can see (which is the current
behaviour).

Setting a network connection to connect automatically helps, but IMHO
the above will make it even more intuitive.

[Bug 350776] Re: jockey backend crashed when trying to install nvidia driver

2009-04-25 Thread zulu
I encountered the same problem in 9.04 after trying to change
Appearance settings. Hardware is nVidia 160m in Dell E6500. I've always
hated nVidia's stance on open source; this just brings back bad
memories.

I noticed this in my pstree:

 ├─jockey-backend─┬─cdrom───mount
 │ └─{jockey-backend}

and top showed:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

 3885 root 20 0 16664 1740 1452 R 24 0.0 8:55.71 cdrom

 3790 root 20 0 180m 70m 16m S 14 0.9 4:43.00 jockey-backend

 2529 messageb 20 0 22064 1792 808 S6 0.0 2:42.00 dbus-daemon

So I disabled 'local cdrom' in my Synaptic settings and retried. At
first it didn't work, but then I realized the above 'cdrom' process was
still running. So I killed it, and this time it seems to work (at least
it downloads and installed). I'm about to reboot and confirm.

[Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled

2007-06-11 Thread Zulu Eleven
I've been happily using feisty for a while, then I tried to use my canon
lide20 (purchased because it was known to work with Linux). Scanbuttond
works for me, thanks. I'm concerned about the above reports of the
problem persisting in gutsy. Funny thing is I've got dapper on my
laptop, where the scanner just works, and I wasn't aware of any laptop
improvement in feisty regarding suspend.

I don't want to sound harsh, but if a decision had to be made between
laptop suspend and breaking scanners, then I would suggest the feisty
was not ready for release. Though if a large number of folks were
bitching about laptop suspend, then I guess I understand. A lot of
newbies wouldn't bother to trawl the bug reports for a fix.

That said, there's no OS without problems. Ubuntu has been a great leap
forward in ease-of-installation, hardware recognition and usability.
There's no way I'm going back to THAT operating system. And Ubuntu is
the distro I would recommend to newcomers. BUT I will now be
recommending that they install dapper and wait for either a fix or the
next LTS edition. I've also logged bugs regarding gwenview, soundjuicer
and Ukrainian language support, all of which work on dapper.
