[Bug 1952674] Re: Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook)
My machine was pushed the 5.13.0-25 kernel today but this time it did not cause everything to break. All of the things I originally reported as broken on my HP Zbook are now fixed. The internal display works. The trackpad works. The keyboard works. The Ethernet on the Thunderbolt dock works. My system has an NVIDIA GPU (looks like a Quadro T1000) so I do not see the 4700U graphics driver crash that rasdpm reports. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1952674 Title: Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe-5.13/+bug/1952674/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1952674] Re: Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook)
I don't know what happened, but apparently my system doesn't want the 5.13 kernel installed anymore. I just managed to remove it (and the related NVidia kernel module packages) without causing any conflicts or triggering any meta-package complaints... Which is great, because it means I don't have to hack grub into booting the 5.11 kernel now :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1952674 Title: Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe-5.13/+bug/1952674/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1952674] Re: Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook)
I note that /dev/input/event7 to event26 are missing with kernel 5.13. The Thunderbolt dock Ethernet seems to be this device (missing with kernel 5.13). r8152 6-1.3.3:1.0 enx3c52821a24c3: renamed from eth0 I see what looks like the laptop's internal ethernet showing up though. I didn't think to move the Ethernet cable to that port to see if it would work. My external monitors (BenQ FP937s and Samsync SyncMaster) show up for both kernels. Interestingly, I don't see the internal panel showing up under either kernel? But it works with 5.11 and not with 5.13. I only see this with 5.11: (II) modeset(G0): using drv /dev/dri/card0 And then some EDID probing, that maybe includes the internal panel?

[Bug 1952674] [NEW] Kernel 5.13 fails to work with lots of hardware (HP Zbook)
Public bug reported: The Internal display does not work. External monitors connected via Thunderbolt down continue to work. The trackpad does not work. The keyboard does work. The Ethernet on the Thunderbolt dock does not work. Booting the 5.11 kernel allows everything to work. [Bug 1847377] Re: snmptrapd.service uses MIBSDIR instead of MIBDIRS
For a longer description of what I was doing... I have a device that sends SNMP traps and it was sending them to my desktop. I was monitoring snmptrapd using sudo journalctl -f -u snmptrapd. Originally, this provided only numeric OIDs. Installing snmp-mibs- downloader fixed up many of the OIDs but not the custom ones. In order to get the custom MIBS working, I had to add the directory they were in to MIBDIRS and add -m ALL to the snmptrapd.service file (well... I don't know if the commandline change was needed, I was following a co- worker's suggestions). I have attached the modified snmptrapd.service file to this bug. On my system, this file is /etc/systemd/system/snmptrapd.service. This is a command that works to send a trap to my local snmptrapd (running on the same box): MIBDIRS=/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/iana:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/site:$HOME/work/git/ogtrapd/mibs /usr/bin/snmptrap -mALL -v 2c -c log 127.0.0.1:162 "0" OG-TEST- MIB::ogTESTMessage ogTESTMessageStatus s 'test message' I'll attach the custom MIBS needed to make this work too. That should allow you to complete reproduce the issue and fix. ** Attachment added: "snmptrapd.service" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/net-snmp/+bug/1847377/+attachment/5296409/+files/snmptrapd.service -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1847377 Title: snmptrapd.service uses MIBSDIR instead of MIBDIRS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/net-snmp/+bug/1847377/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1847377] [NEW] snmptrapd.service uses MIBSDIRS instead of MIBDIRS
Public bug reported: The snmptrapd.service file (which comes from net- snmp_5.7.3+dfsg-1.8ubuntu3.1.debian.tar.xz rather than upstream) has this line: Environment="MIBSDIR=/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/iana:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/site:/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/mibs/iana:/usr/share/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/netsnmp" However, snmptrapd expects to see the MIBDIRS rather than MIBSDIR so this line is not having the intended effect. This seems to be an upstream Debian packaging issue, but when I looked at their bug tracker they said to use the reportbug program. And when I installed and ran it, it said to use ubuntu-bug. Since there doesn't appear to be anything else useful to add, here's the dpkg.log section from when the update ran: 2018-08-20 15:20:36 startup archives unpack 2018-08-20 15:20:36 upgrade console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status half-configured console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status half-installed console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status triggers-pending systemd:amd64 237-3ubuntu10.3 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status triggers-pending ureadahead:amd64 0.100.0-20 2018-08-20 15:20:36 status half-installed console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 upgrade console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-configured console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-installed console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status triggers-pending man-db:amd64 2.8.3-2 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-installed console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked console-setup:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 upgrade keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-configured keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-installed keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-installed keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.3 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 startup packages configure 2018-08-20 15:20:43 configure keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status unpacked keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:43 status half-configured keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:45 status installed keyboard-configuration:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:45 status triggers-pending initramfs-tools:all 0.130ubuntu3.1 2018-08-20 15:20:45 trigproc ureadahead:amd64 0.100.0-20 2018-08-20 15:20:45 status half-configured ureadahead:amd64 0.100.0-20 2018-08-20 15:20:45 status installed ureadahead:amd64 0.100.0-20 2018-08-20 15:20:45 trigproc systemd:amd64 237-3ubuntu10.3 2018-08-20 15:20:45 status half-configured systemd:amd64 237-3ubuntu10.3 2018-08-20 15:20:46 status installed systemd:amd64 237-3ubuntu10.3 2018-08-20 15:20:46 trigproc man-db:amd64 2.8.3-2 2018-08-20 15:20:46 status half-configured man-db:amd64 2.8.3-2 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status installed man-db:amd64 2.8.3-2 2018-08-20 15:20:47 configure console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked console-setup-linux:all 1.178ubuntu2.6 2018-08-20 15:20:47 status unpacked

[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
I downloaded the Ubuntu 4.6.0 rc2 image (4.6.0-040600rc2-generic) and confirmed the issue remains (as with the last mainline build I tested, it does not show up as quickly, I guess something about the memory layout has changed). I downloaded current linux HEAD source and verified the code still looks incorrect (it does). I downloaded a pre-git Linux history repo (from the internet archive) and traced the bad code to commit ef1bba7ed87a4059ee725565689a1706e9f11534. The driver maintainer seems to be the same person, maybe they have some recollection that helps because the change itself does not enlighten me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
Another data point for consideration... (I didn't think of this until late last night) git checkout Ubuntu-3.10.0-0.6 git revert 313a58e487ab3eb80e7e1f9baddc75968288aad9 # resolve a header conflict - nothing major After building this, I was able to use the network dongle just fine (ie. second and third pegasus-related commits were ok, one of them even removed that warning when inserting the device). I had a look at the commit and it looks ok... I'm guessing from the change in code that the "pool" was not necessary, and that the extra skb buffer objects went unused most of the time. However, I believe they hid a buffer overrun. The skb buffer was previously allocated as PEGASUS_MTU + 2. The new buffer is allocated as PEGASUS_MTU (with optional padding for alignment purposes). From what I can see, this should make the usable buffer consistently smaller than the old structure allowed for (by 2 bytes). The real problem though, is that when reading into the skb buffer, the driver uses PEGASUS_MTU + 8 as the buffer size, a pretty clear buffer overrun to me. I don't know how the kernel is allocating this memory but I guess the underlying allocation pattern of the "pool" code was able to hide the effect of the overrun and this change merely exposed it by changing the allocation pattern. Indeed, the attached patch (which passes the correct buffer size to the read function) also fixes things. I suppose this is the fix that should be committed. I guess this needs to go upstream to the kernel guys though? ** Patch added: "0001-pegasus-Do-not-write-more-data-to-the-buffer-than-it.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+attachment/4620180/+files/0001-pegasus-Do-not-write-more-data-to-the-buffer-than-it.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
The good news is that I have identified the commit that breaks my system. It is 313a58e487ab3eb80e7e1f9baddc75968288aad9 (the first of 3 commits to the pegasus driver). I have attached the bisect log in case it's interesting. Here's some notes on my process... The bisecting was entirely in commits that lacked the debian directories so I used the patches from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v3.9-saucy/ to restore them. Most of the time, the kernel asked about configs that were new. I just accepted the defaults. My build/run process went like this. # remove old kernels COLUMNS= dpkg -l | awk '/linux-image/{print $2}' | grep -v '3\.19' | grep -v lts | xargs sudo apt-get -y remove --purge # backup old packages mv ../*.deb ../old # so the patch works rm -rf debian* # depending on the previous test git bisect good/bad # so I can build for file in ../3.9/*.patch; do patch -p1 < $file; done # set the version to something useful (3.9.0-0+lrx) vi debian.master/changelog chmod a+x debian/rules debian/scripts/* debian/scripts/misc/* fakeroot debian/rules clean fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic sudo dpkg -i ../linux-image-* sudo reboot # test by booting from the kernel, plugging in the USB dongle and pinging the gateway ** Attachment added: "bisect.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+attachment/4619231/+files/bisect.log ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
I have narrowed it further to these builds. 3.9.0-7.15 - good 3.10.0-0.6 - bad I've managed to fetch the saucy repo. git says there's around 14,000 commits between these two tags?! I'm going to first verify that when I build both of these tags I get the same behaviour as I do with the binary builds. Then I'll start the git bisect properly. Unfortunately, as slow as my internet is, downloading kernels is quite a bit faster than building them appears to be :( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
Sigh. I was forgetting about the linux-image-extra package. This proved to make a difference. Indeed, the post-Saucy versions that were succeeding were only doing so because the image-extra package was missing. Strangely, the USB dongle worked without that package but clearly there's an interaction with something else that needs a module from that package. Armed with this new knowledge, I re-tested some of the builds I had tested previously (now with image-extra) and found this. 3.9.0-0 - good* 3.11.0-26 - bad These are the first and last kernels of Saucy. The first one does not have an image-extra (the image package is larger). The last one does have an image-extra. I guess some time during Saucy, the packaging was changed? My testing yesterday was booting with the USB dongle inserted (so that networking config could be applied during boot, similarly to how I intend to run the system). Today, I have been inserting the dongle after the system boots. I have attached netconsole5.log, which shows the kernel warning/error I got when I plugged the dongle in (on kernel 3.9.0-0). Note that despite this output, the system continued to run just fine. ** Attachment added: "netconsole5.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+attachment/4612938/+files/netconsole5.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
In the absence of a reply to my question, I tried downloading various binary kernels to at least narrow down the scope of the bisecting I'll have to do. After trying older releases and having no failures, I unexpectedly found that 14.04 kernels only cover 3.11 to 3.13. But I'm running 14.04 and I'm on kernel 3.19?! It seems the 14.04.x updates include kernels from newer releases. So this bug is much more recent than I originally anticipated. How recent? Vivid recent. Kernel 3.19.0-7 is good. Kernel 3.19.0-51 is bad. That cuts way down on the search space. I might try some more binary kernels in this range while I sort out how to do source builds (in case there are more commits than binaries - which is what I'm expecting). I think this means I'll be able to download git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-vivid.git to get the appropriate tags to bisect from. I found a hint to use fetch --depth=1, then fetch --depth=1000, etc. to incrementally fetch a large repo.

I had to jump through some hoops to update the BIOS (since the updater was a Windows binary and this machine does not have Windows on it). But I finally sorted something out. dmidecode output: 68PDV Ver. F.20 12/08/2011 The adapter seems to be stable now. I brought it up, did some pings, even some file transfers. As per the original description, apport-collect launched a browser (in my case, apparently this was lynx). [Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: This is a rather old USB ethernet adapter. It worked fine for me with older distributions (including Ubuntu 10.04). I noticed it causing problems after upgrading to 14.04 and stopped using it as a result (since I needed reliable USB ethernet for work). I was also not completely sure if it was this device causing the issue or interplay between this device and a number of other networking USB devices that were used at work. I'd like to use this ethernet adapter at home but the machine is running Ubuntu 14.04 and the issue persists. I have collected some information that might help. I'm happy to try more things to collect information if that will help. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 server 64-bit. I just rebooted so I'm running the latest updates. I was told to run ubuntu-bug linux but I'm not sure how much useful stuff is included in that. I'm including the kernel log which has some bad stuff happening in it. Not sure if it got the system-freezing oops or just the errors leading up to that. It feels like a bug in the driver that corrupts memory because I see issues with network-related things (eg. a ping crashed, but the next ping didn't), leading to a full-system freeze. This machine has been happily running Ubuntu for a looong time (though it was only recently upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04, previously it had been running 10.04). I have not had stability issues with the machine but plugging in the USB Ethernet reliably makes it freeze within minutes. The symptoms also match what I saw on my machine at work. [Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
Note if I plug in the device but don't send traffic over it, the system manages to remain running for longer. I brought the interface up with a static IP and the system remained up for well over 5 minutes before it died. I was monitoring ifconfig and it had around 30 Rx packets and 300 Tx packets. I'm not sure what caused that, since it was static and no traffic should have been going out. With DHCP, pings, etc. going over the interface it kills the machine much quicker (all the previous crashes involved me sending data over the link, mostly just pings and whatever DHCP sends). ** Attachment added: "netconsole4.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-vivid/+bug/1547838/+attachment/4576588/+files/netconsole4.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-vivid/+bug/1547838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I think the first netconsole missed some data at the start (I got a belated firewall warning) so here's a second capture that seems to start earlier. [Bug 1328360] Re: Linux 2.6.32-61 futex changes break existing applications
I don't run Ubuntu 10.04 because I want to. There is a problem with the futex backport in the -61 kernel that the proposed -62 kernel fixes. As bug 1327300 makes clear, this is a lucid-specific problem so clearly the issue will not be present in any newer release. Supported or not, breaking existing systems and telling users to change releases is a little... unhelpful. And you seem to be suggesting that this only affects desktop apps. My Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER at home would probably disagree with your assessment, but I'm not stupid enough to run a kernel I know to be broken on it just to prove a point. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1328360 Title: Linux 2.6.32-61 futex changes break existing applications To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1328360/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1328360] [NEW] Linux 2.6.32-61 futex changes break existing applications
Public bug reported: I upgraded to this new kernel this morning and after rebooting, 2 applications failed to work (consistently). These apps are: google-chrome-stable=27.0.1453.110-r202711 - process runs but no UI is visible skype=4.0.0.8-0lucid1 - UI is visible but connection to network never happens While originally trying to figure out what was going on I rebooted a few times and observed some other issues. [Bug 640198] [NEW] chromium 6 hard locks the machine when opening a new window
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: chromium-browser Chromium 6.0.472.53 was installed on my machine sometime in the last week. There is a problem that causes my entire machine to lockup (kernel oops, as far as I can tell). System setup/info - Linux bq-erebus 2.6.32-24-generic-pae #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 15:37:22 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux - The nvidia-current package is providing a driver for the NVIDIA card in the machine (GeForce 9500 GT). - Ubuntu 10.04 - Kubuntu installed and active (ie. KDE 4 is my desktop) Steps to reproduce 1) Start chromium which opens the windows/tabs from before. For me this is 4 windows with 20-30 tabs between them. The contents of the tabs include Pulse, JIRA and Bugzilla installations. Unfortunately, they're all intranet sites or I'd supply URLs. 2) Open a new chromium window by clicking the icon in the panel (this runs chromium-browser which tells the running instance to make a new window). Expected behaviour 1) Window opens. 2) Home page loads. Observed behaviour 1) Window opens. 2) Machine locks up hard. 3) Keyboard lights flash. 4) Machine cannot be pinged. 5) Hard drive is not making noise. 6) Display does not update. 7) Keyboard/Mouse have no effect. 8) Power must be manually cycled. Note that this is not 100% reliable. I believe I had Chromium 6 running for several days before I first had this problem. I have not experienced this problem 3 times over 2 days. Given the way this fails, reproducing it may prove to be difficult. I'm not sure if the existing windows/tabs have any impact on the issue. I'm including some hints from our IT guys (who have dealt with similar symtpoms). - Desktop Effects/Compiz are known to cause these symptoms. I was running Compiz and had Desktop Effects enabled. However even after disabling Desktop Effects and switching to KWin the problem persists. - I was using the non-PAE kernel. I switched to the PAE kernel to get access to the full 4GB of RAM installed in my machine. That involved re-installing the NVIDIA driver. This had no effect on the problem. - I cannot reproduce this with Chromium 5.x. - The previous instances where similar symptoms were observed was traced down to some mixup/race between the compositing stuff in X and the input event stuff in X. Based on the above, my completely speculative suggestion is that Chromium 6 includes some kind of accelerated rendering (eg. WebKit using OpenGL directly) and this is triggering a bug down in X or the kernel or the driver. Downgrading to Chromium 5.x has given me a browser that works but it can't read the profile and I can't find a backup of the profile. Since I'm already in a compromised situation I might try backing up the chromium profile, blowing it away and seeing if I can reproduce the bug without the intranet sites loaded. [Bug 640198] Re: chromium 6 hard locks the machine when opening a new window
So the good news is that even after I removed my profile (~/.config/chromium), I could still reproduce this problem. Also, my icon runs chromium-browser --new-window, in case that matters. So the steps to reproduce are just: 1) Start Chromium. 2) Run chromium-browser --new-window. However, while this reproduced the problem for me it's still not 100% reproducible. I have tried and failed to reproduce it a few times after booting the machine after it locked up before. -- chromium 6 hard locks the machine when opening a new window https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640198 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
