[Bug 418047] [NEW] NetManager crashes from time to time

2009-08-24 Thread akromic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm not really sure if this is a duplicate, because it's not clear to me
is this the same type of crash as the others I've seen reported. I've
used Apport to upload data on this when it happened.

It happens on a Lenovo ThinPad R61i laptop.

What happens is that it crashes from time to time, for no apparent
reason, and it stops managing networks. Interfaces not in dire need of
management like the ETH0 continue to work unmanaged, but wireless stops
working. Restarting the NetworkManager daemon usually solves the
problem, however sometimes the wireless adapter stays down, and I'm
unable to bring it back up (tried turning on and off by wlan-killswitch,
putting the laptop to standby etc.)

Now, I'm not really sure if this is problem with NM bringing down the
wlan interface or is it vice versa... It is possible that a faulty
driver causes this. However, I've encountered similar problems several
Ubuntu versions back, and on a different laptop, so I guess there might
be something wrong with the NM.

When NM alone crashes, it's not a problem for me, I just restart the
daemon. It might be a problem though, for many ordinary users have no
clue what happened, let alone knowing how to restart the daemon...

When the wlan interface goes down together with it, it does become an
annoying problem, because I've found no way to bring it up again other
then rebooting.

Kind Regards,
Arny

[Bug 355476] Re: 32-bit firefox should be included in AMD64 (x86-64) distribution

2009-06-14 Thread akromic
All I'm trying is to point out how a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit system
is a good idea. My comparison of windows and linux is technically
correct here.

I've also used 32-bit and 64-bit both linux and windows, including
32-bit vista (yuck), and also tried 32-bit firefox on the 64-bit ubuntu.
The final conclusion is simply that 32-bit firefox always works better
and more stable (more compatible with plugins and java), and also
consumes less memory than the 64-bit.

I'm quite a bit diappointed with the 64-bit ff, not only it eats
enormous amounts of memory, but java support is so broken that I cannot
access my bank's e-banking applet on this computer at all, and it's
quite a problem for me. I must say, if there isn't a 32-bit ff in the
next ubuntu version, I guess I'll abandon the 64-bit distro altogether
and install 32-bit ubuntu.

[Bug 373366] [NEW] [request] Ubuntu configuration manager

2009-05-07 Thread akromic
Public bug reported:

One thing missing from Ubuntu is a unified configuration manager like
YaST or DrakConf from other distributions. For system parameters Ubuntu
relies mostly on Debconf system which is not quite user friendly for
regular users and the few frontends for it are chaotic and somewhat
incomplete. For desktop and some system parameters it relies on Gnome
configuration tools (or KDE's), which is problematic for the reason it's
not consistent across different desktops and some of those may not even
be present (when using say WMaker or even Xfce).

Therefore I'd say there is a need for a centralized and efficient
configuration manager, which would connect with Debconf and mostly
replace Gnome and KDE configuration tools. It might be even good for the
image of Ubuntu, since now it could be actually interpreted as a highly
customized and polished Debian. Not to mention no difference from other
distributions since there are no major (and visible by users) Ubuntu-
specific tools.

[Bug 355472] [NEW] gtk-theme-switch no longer provides gtk1 theme switching

2009-04-05 Thread akromic
Public bug reported:

The package lost GTK1 theme switching along the way.

The strange thing is that description for gtk-chtheme contains this: For GTK+
1.x themes
use 'gtk-theme-switch' package - obviously incorrect now.

There was a debate before to split gtk-theme-switch to two packages, one
for GTK1, another for GTK2, which is supposedly done, but now there is
only GTK2 switching in this package. Since this seems to be the only
program provided to change GTK1 themes, it should be included again or
two different packages created as proposed.

2009-04-05 Thread akromic

Binary package hint: firefox

There are several reasons to do this - first and foremost for 32-bit plugin
compatibility and without using the quirky nspluginwrapper, and there are still
some other rough edges including some java issues. 32-bit version also uses
less memory .

Considering what says on this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

this bug could even be marked as High importance because it satisfies
several of the listed criteria:

High: A bug which fulfills one of the following criteria:

* Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated) ---
* Makes a default Ubuntu installation generally unusable for some users
---
o For example, if the system fails to boot, or X fails to start, on a
certain make and model of computer
* A problem with an essential hardware component (disk controller, laptop
built-in wireless, video card, keyboard, mouse) ---
* Has a moderate impact on a large portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)

[Bug 261400] Re: trackpoint scrolling is not working

2009-03-06 Thread akromic
I have TP R61i with Intrepid and made the FDI settings and it doesn't
work... sort of. Strange thing is, it actually DOES work, just I'd need
to keep the trackpoint in scrolling position about a minute for a line!
Sometimes after suspend, it does work properly when the laptop wakes,
and it remains so until the next suspend or reboot, then it reverts to
the useless mode I first described.

[Bug 313231] Re: Backlight control doesn't work anymore on thinkpad

2009-03-01 Thread akromic

I have the same problem on ThinkPad R61i. As of version 2.6.27-12 this hasn't
been fixed. I propose the priority of this bug should be raised - as far as I
am concerned it makes my laptop near unusable. Therefore I still boot to
2.6.27-10 and I don't intend to boot to any newer revision which doesn't let me
control screen brightness.

On a side note, 2.6.27-11 has also introduced another annoyance for me
which was deactivation of th WLAN adapter when controlling it and BT
with Fn-F5 keys. Fortunately it has been fixed in -12. I wonder what
they did to the kernel in -11?

If a log would help, please ask and I'll send...

[Bug 291737] Re: nm-applet doesn't show in tray

2008-12-08 Thread akromic
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 289466 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289466

Ok, seems noone is interested in this, and nobody listens when i say it
has nothing to do with /etc/interfaces. Right. Moving on...

Now, I'm not really sure if this is a bug of NM or perhaps of the Xfce
systray. I think I'll repost this bug as pertaining to Xfce systray, but
I'm not sure which package it belongs to. Since I haven't found a
separarate binary/process for it, I guess it is part of Xfce Panel. If
someone could confirm so not to post in the wrong place...

[Bug 291737] Re: nm-applet doesn't show in tray

2008-11-03 Thread akromic
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 289466 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289466

Within the archive is the syslog.
I've also included some screenshots... two of them show that nm-applet is
actually the dot between the gnome-power-manager and update-manager icons (look
carefully!) The evidence for that is the image of the message balloon coming
exactly from that dot; also, right clicking on the dot brings up the nm's menu.

However, I've discovered that the icon reappears if I move systray
applet to a horizontal panel (it is normally on a vertical one). Perhaps
it's a bug of the Xfce systray applet? (See screenshot of the horizontal
systray)

[Bug 291737] [NEW] nm-applet doesn't show in tray

2008-10-31 Thread akromic
Public bug reported:

It does work, it does provide notification baloons, and if I click

be seen, perhaps like it has shrunken into a single pixel.

The system is Xubuntu Intrepid/8.10, upgraded from Hardy/8.04 (since
first Intrepid Beta). It worked fine in Hardy, since the upgrade, the
icon has vanished.

[Bug 85660] xfce4-taskmanager displays wrong units

2007-02-16 Thread akromic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-taskmanager

Package: xfce4-taskmanager
Version: 0.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu1
Severity: normal

xfce4-taskmanager displays kB in the VM-Size column, but the numbers
displayed are obviously in _bytes_, since the value would represent
_gigabytes_ on a system which has less than gigabyte VM storage.

Example:initVM-Size: 1667072 kB RSS: 118 kB
firefox-bin VM-Size: 154693632 kB RSS: 8058 kB

Of course, init uses 1628 KB and firefox 147 MB as reported by gPS and
top. I was confused for some time, until I realized it's a bug.

I generated this report using reportbug.

Regards,
A.K.

[Bug 68843] Re: croatian keyboard is broken in installation of ubuntu server 6.10

2007-02-16 Thread akromic
The same happens in Xubuntu 6.10, observed on two very different
machines. Two more facts to add:

- Tried Slovenian layout because of the interchangeability, and it
doesn't work either.

- After installing with en_US layout, it is impossible to make the
keyboard work properly for Croatian or Slovenian in console. After
setting up, the resulting layout is a strange mix of English and
Croatian layout (Croatian punctuation/symbols layout, English letter
layout - QWERTY instead of QWERTZ, no Croatian graphemes).

Also I disagree it has anything to do with the quality of cd-media, it

Oh yes, exactly the same was happening with LILO.
