[Bug 418047] [NEW] NetManager crashes from time to time
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager I'm not really sure if this is a duplicate, because it's not clear to me is this the same type of crash as the others I've seen reported. I've used Apport to upload data on this when it happened. It happens on a Lenovo ThinPad R61i laptop. What happens is that it crashes from time to time, for no apparent reason, and it stops managing networks. Interfaces not in dire need of management like the ETH0 continue to work unmanaged, but wireless stops working. Restarting the NetworkManager daemon usually solves the problem, however sometimes the wireless adapter stays down, and I'm unable to bring it back up (tried turning on and off by wlan-killswitch, putting the laptop to standby etc.) Now, I'm not really sure if this is problem with NM bringing down the wlan interface or is it vice versa... It is possible that a faulty driver causes this. However, I've encountered similar problems several Ubuntu versions back, and on a different laptop, so I guess there might be something wrong with the NM. When NM alone crashes, it's not a problem for me, I just restart the daemon. It might be a problem though, for many ordinary users have no clue what happened, let alone knowing how to restart the daemon... When the wlan interface goes down together with it, it does become an annoying problem, because I've found no way to bring it up again other then rebooting. [Bug 355476] Re: 32-bit firefox should be included in AMD64 (x86-64) distribution
All I'm trying is to point out how a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit system is a good idea. My comparison of windows and linux is technically correct here. I've also used 32-bit and 64-bit both linux and windows, including 32-bit vista (yuck), and also tried 32-bit firefox on the 64-bit ubuntu. The final conclusion is simply that 32-bit firefox always works better and more stable (more compatible with plugins and java), and also consumes less memory than the 64-bit. I'm quite a bit diappointed with the 64-bit ff, not only it eats enormous amounts of memory, but java support is so broken that I cannot access my bank's e-banking applet on this computer at all, and it's quite a problem for me. I must say, if there isn't a 32-bit ff in the next ubuntu version, I guess I'll abandon the 64-bit distro altogether and install 32-bit ubuntu. -- 32-bit firefox should be included in AMD64 (x86-64) distribution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 373366] [NEW] [request] Ubuntu configuration manager
Public bug reported: One thing missing from Ubuntu is a unified configuration manager like YaST or DrakConf from other distributions. For system parameters Ubuntu relies mostly on Debconf system which is not quite user friendly for regular users and the few frontends for it are chaotic and somewhat incomplete. For desktop and some system parameters it relies on Gnome configuration tools (or KDE's), which is problematic for the reason it's not consistent across different desktops and some of those may not even be present (when using say WMaker or even Xfce). Therefore I'd say there is a need for a centralized and efficient configuration manager, which would connect with Debconf and mostly replace Gnome and KDE configuration tools. It might be even good for the image of Ubuntu, since now it could be actually interpreted as a highly customized and polished Debian. Not to mention no difference from other distributions since there are no major (and visible by users) Ubuntu- specific tools. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [request] Ubuntu configuration manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373366 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 355472] [NEW] gtk-theme-switch no longer provides gtk1 theme switching
Public bug reported: The package lost GTK1 theme switching along the way. The strange thing is that description for gtk-chtheme contains this: For GTK+ 1.x themes use 'gtk-theme-switch' package - obviously incorrect now. There was a debate before to split gtk-theme-switch to two packages, one for GTK1, another for GTK2, which is supposedly done, but now there is only GTK2 switching in this package. Since this seems to be the only program provided to change GTK1 themes, it should be included again or two different packages created as proposed. ** Affects: gtk-theme-switch (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gtk-theme-switch no longer provides gtk1 theme switching https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355472 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have the same problem on ThinkPad R61i. As of version 2.6.27-12 this hasn't been fixed. I propose the priority of this bug should be raised - as far as I am concerned it makes my laptop near unusable. Therefore I still boot to 2.6.27-10 and I don't intend to boot to any newer revision which doesn't let me control screen brightness. On a side note, 2.6.27-11 has also introduced another annoyance for me which was deactivation of th WLAN adapter when controlling it and BT with Fn-F5 keys. Fortunately it has been fixed in -12. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 289466 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289466 Within the archive is the syslog. I've also included some screenshots... two of them show that nm-applet is actually the dot between the gnome-power-manager and update-manager icons (look carefully!) The evidence for that is the image of the message balloon coming exactly from that dot; also, right clicking on the dot brings up the nm's menu. However, I've discovered that the icon reappears if I move systray applet to a horizontal panel (it is normally on a vertical one). Perhaps it's a bug of the Xfce systray applet? [Bug 68843] Re: croatian keyboard is broken in installation of ubuntu server 6.10
The same happens in Xubuntu 6.10, observed on two very different machines. Two more facts to add: - Tried Slovenian layout because of the interchangeability, and it doesn't work either. - After installing with en_US layout, it is impossible to make the keyboard work properly for Croatian or Slovenian in console. After setting up, the resulting layout is a strange mix of English and Croatian layout (Croatian punctuation/symbols layout, English letter layout - QWERTY instead of QWERTZ, no Croatian graphemes). -- croatian keyboard is broken in installation of ubuntu server, kubuntu and xubuntu - 6.10 https://launchpad.net/bugs/68843 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
