I'm having the same problem.
I have just upgraded to 8.04 and each time I try to change the resolution and 
monitor settings they either arn't saved or are saved but ignored.
I have a Nvidia7300 card with a LG M198WA going into the DVI connection trying 
to run at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is happening whether I test it or not. Restarting X is just taking it back 
to step one, as it rebooting the system.

[Bug 154548] GNOME unable to lock file

Public bug reported:

On login, system reports issues about users home directory should be set to 644 
and should be owned by the users.
The system then proceeds to say that it is unable to lock 
/home/user/.ICEauthority 
After error occurs, the login form reappears. Error is happening to root 
account only.

Only changes made to account have been to menu structure.

Error is occurring on ubuntu 7.10
