[Bug 1085706] Re: pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error

2022-04-27 Thread Ariel Faigon
Confirming issue exists on Kubuntu 20.04.4 LTS.

Every attempt to login from the graphical login screen makes this error
appear in authlog:

/var/log/auth.log:Apr 27 13:56:16  kcheckpass[3516]:
pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error

Quick "fix" of the symptom, i.e. make the error go away is to add the
seteuid-bit permission to kcheckpass (owned by root):

sudo chmod u+s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kcheckpass

However, this seems like a too broad privilege grant so I'm not sure it is a
good idea.
Personally, I prefer to have the spurious error in the log over this broad
privilege grant.

Note that login succeeds despite the error appearing in authlog.

[Bug 1917194] Re: [Dell G5 5590] lspci freezes computer on Ubuntu 20.04

2021-03-18 Thread Ariel Torti
Tried 5.8.0-43 kernel and didn't work.
I also tried booting Manjaro which uses 5.6.15-1-MANJARO and the issue is
present.

I ended up doing a workaround, compiling an ubuntu kernel with `pci-
stub` as builtin and `xhci-hcd` as a dynamic module. That way I can make
pci-stub bind to the culprit device and everything works fine.

2021-03-02 Thread Ariel Torti
Hey !

I'm able to boot and get into a tty. But after a few seconds (even if I
don't do anything) it freezes.

Machine boots fine with the USB stick and running lspci doesn't trigger
a freeze.

Attached is the dmesg log, but it seems to be truncated. I managed to
log into a tty and run `dmesg -w` before it froze. I'll attached the
images below

[Bug 1917194] [NEW] [Dell G5 5590] lspci freezes computer on Ubuntu 20.04

2021-02-27 Thread Ariel Torti
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 my computer started to freeze
when running lspci.

I ended up noticing that it happened when trying to query device
'1f:00.0' a USB port. After some kernel and bios updates the problem got
worse. Now the computer freezes ~5 seconds after booting up.

I tried:
1) Running in recovery mode, also freezes
2) Running an older kernel version (5.4.0-66-generic), also freezes
3) Removing nvidia drivers (just in case), also freezes
4) Running all combinations nodemodeset, acpi=off an nouveau blacklisting
5) Updating all drivers

The computer freezes for ever, I can't switch TTYs, move the mouse,
anything, the only way to leave was to force shutdown. On the last cases
after switching to a tty I could see this messages before the freeze
ocurred:

kernel: xhci_hcd :1f:00.0: PCI post-resume error -19!
kernel: xhci_hcd :1f:00.0: HC died; cleaning up

Running Ubuntu 20.04 from a USB sticks works fine, as well as doing a fresh
install.
All logs were obtained by chrooting to the faulty partition from a fresh
install, if there are any more logs that would be helpful, let me know.

[Bug 1906939] Re: kde frontend, ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'sip'

2021-02-13 Thread Ariel Faigon
Some more info, with the hope this is helpful.

installing python3-sip didn't work for me:

```
% sudo apt install python3-sip
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
python3-sip is already the newest version (4.19.7+dfsg-1ubuntu0.1).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 83 not upgraded.
% /usr/bin/usb-creator-kde
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/usb-creator-kde", line 21, in
import sip
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'sip'
```

This is because of needing to support multiple `python3` versions:

```
% sudo update-alternatives --config python3
There are 3 choices for the alternative python3 (providing /usr/bin/python3).
  SelectionPathPriority   Status
  0/usr/bin/python3.8   3 auto mode
  1/usr/bin/python3.6   1 manual mode
* 2/usr/bin/python3.7   2 manual mode
  3/usr/bin/python3.8   3 manual mode
```

Installing `sip` (for the python3.7 env) with `python3 -m pip --user
--upgrade sip` (keeping the system python install intact, doesn't solve
the problem either). Same import error.

If I edit the shebang line of /usr/bin/usb-creator-kde to the more
explicit:

#!/usr/bin/python3.6

the script starts without failing the import.

However, it fails immediately after with a popup "An error occurred
while talking to the udisks service"

systemctl list-units | grep udisks

shows there's a `udisks2` service but not a `udisks` service.

So yes, this is a simple dependency issue that keeps growing over time.

[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2020-09-22 Thread Ariel Faigon
@h1bymask

Seems cleaner to share the audio group between the two daemon processes
rather than trying to merge the two separate uids.

/etc/group already seems to do this (on 18.04):

$ grep audio /etc/group
audio:x:29:pulse,timidity

Given that the devices under /dev/snd/ are all read-write by group
audio.

[Bug 1846090] Re: Asus UX580GD (GDX1505:00 27C6:01F1) Touchpad (LCD) screen support

2019-12-19 Thread Ariel
In my case, ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE, Ubuntu 19.10, touchpad is
unresponsive. I somehow made it work by installing xserver-xorg-input-
libinput, xserver-xorg-input-evdev, xserver-xorg-input-mouse, but after
rebooting it stops working again and can't find any solution anymore.
Any tips on how to fix this?

I have reverted my microcode back to original version (removed the

Also attached are errors i get on boot. Most of them have only started
appearing after the fatal kernel update witch caused the hibernation
issue.

[Bug 1008213] Re: Missing depends on whoopsie.

2017-09-14 Thread Ariel Faigon
Just two little suggestions to make the software more friendly:

$ strings /usr/bin/dbus-daemon | grep 'Unknown username "%s" in'
Unknown username "%s" in message bus configuration file

It would be nice if the printer of this error message (dbus-daemon)
would change the error message so:

- Add 'warning:' so it isn't interpreted as an error
- Specify the path of the "message bus configuration file" so it would be easy
to figure out what needs to be edited to get rid of the warning.

Same bug affects me (Linux phg 4.9.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.25-1
(2017-05-02) x86_64 GNU/Linux).

As a simple bypass, add Donn's suggestion to /etc/rc.local :
/usr/bin/setkeycodes e03e 255

After reboot, no more messages of this type in the log files.

[Bug 1682967] [NEW] kdeconnect plasmoid QML ListItem: Binding loop detected for property "width"

2017-04-14 Thread Ariel Faigon
Public bug reported:

I've been using KDEconnect on Xenial (16.04.2 LTS) and a new android
phone for several months.

Generally, it works fine for what I use it: editing/updating music
content on my phone from my linux desktop. I do the updates via 'rsync
--inplace ...'

One worrisome symptom I noticed is this error in my ~/.xsession-errors:

file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.kdeconnect/contents/ui/DeviceDelegate.qml:130:23:
QML ListItem: Binding loop detected for property "width"

Right now there are over 20,000 of these errors in the .xsession-errors
log for about 1 week of uptime.

It seems that something is wrong, and kdeconnect notices it, but I'm not
sure what, so reporting it here.

Will be glad to supply more information if someone with an understanding
of the code can suggest how to further debug this.

The package containing the config file is kdeconnect-plasma according to
this:

$ dpkg -S DeviceDelegate.qml
kdeconnect-plasma:
/usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.kdeconnect/contents/ui/DeviceDelegate.qml

[Bug 1676867] [NEW] Use libgd2

2017-03-28 Thread Ariel Zelivansky
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

libwmf uses GD 2.0.1 BETA (see /src/extra/gd). This is a very old
version of what became libgd2. We need to remove the copied GD source
and instead rely on the maintained libgd2 package.

This issue has security implications (there may be security updates to
libgd that are not applied to the local copy).

clang in 15.04 and 16.04 LTS is pretty unusable without this patch.

Linking against precompiled (with the gcc toolchain) system libraries
fails.

[Bug 1606355] [NEW] clang 3.8 incompatibility with boost since 15.04

2016-07-25 Thread Ariel Faigon
Public bug reported:

Since 15.04, people trying to use clang++ as their compiler fail linking
due to different mangling schemes (ABI versions) between clang-3.8 and
g++.

In Ubuntu 16.04 libboost-* packages are all compiled with g++ 5.x.

So trying to use clang++ to link with them fails with undefined symbols.
Here's one example of such error:

./libvw.a(parse_args.o): In function
`boost::program_options::typed_value::name()
const': parse_args.cc:
.text._ZNK5boost15program_options11typed_valueImcE4nameEv[_ZNK5boost15program_options11typed_valueImcE4nameEv]+0x27):
undefined reference to `boost::program_options::arg'

This is a regression. Binaries compiled with clang++ used to be compatible with
binaries compiled with gcc/g++.

All the details can be found in the upstream bug here:

   https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=23529

A patch was released back in March 23 2016 which so far has been working
well for early testers.

Why this bug should get more attention?

In my experience, clang on 12.04 was about 2x faster than g++ in compile
times and its generated code up to 6% faster than code generated by the
g++ toolchain (for my application, vowpal-wabbit). So I switched to
clang. The moment I upgraded to LTS (16.04) I discovered I can no
longer use clang on Ubuntu. Essentially, the clang shipped with Ubuntu
16.04 LTS is no longer working with the shipped boost libraries
rendering clang on 16.04 pretty useless.

I'm opening this bug on launchpad to increase visibility into the
problem and help accelerate the integration of this patch into Ubuntu.

[Bug 1468139] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 drops WLAN/WIFI after running for 5 minutes.

2015-11-28 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
Using an external USB wireless adapter, like D-Link DWA110 seems to
work. I'm using it to download wicd to try this workaround:

A possible workaround is to install wicd and wicd-kde, which seems to
work better. You need to stop the network-manager before using wicd-kde.

I confirm the workaround described in #8 but the tradeoff is that it
renders the connection to a sluggish level.

[Bug 1444226] Re: [Kubuntu 15.04 beta] can't connect to wifi with Ralink RT2561/RT61 and NetworkManager

2015-11-28 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
I tried the solution proposed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442908/comments/4
and it worked. You can use wicd-kde instead wicd-gtk; but, besides that,
you must follow the instructions. Wicd doesn't recognizes automatically
the encryption, so you must try the most common: WEP, WPA (passphrase).

[Bug 1468139] Re: Ubuntu 15.04 drops WLAN/WIFI after running for 5 minutes.

2015-11-27 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
I have a Realtek 2561.

I tried putting the line "options rt2500pci nohwcrypt=1" in
/etc/modprobe.d/rt2500pci.conf without success.

Also, tried disabling the power management writing
HOOK_BLACKLIST="wireless" in the /etc/pm/config.d/blacklist; it doesn't
help too.

I think at this moment the only workaround is to install a backport.

[Bug 1493595] [NEW] procps watch -c/--color option doesn't work

2015-09-08 Thread Ariel Faigon
Public bug reported:

This is a bug report on 'watch' from procps.

Essentially, it doesn't seem like -c/--color (ANSI color sequences
support) works.

Here's how to reproduce:

'man watch says':

  -c, --color
  Interpret ANSI color sequences.

This works as expected in bash or dash:

printf "\033[39;1;43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"

And so is this (additional level of protection from the shell):

printf '"\033[39;1;43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"'

When running under 'watch', even when the -c/--color is in effect, the
colors disappear:

watch -c printf '"\033[39;1;43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"'

Same issue happens with simpler (one number) ANSI color sequences, e.g.:
printf '"\033[43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"'# works fine

while:
watch -c printf '"\033[43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"'

the color disappears.

The same happens when the whole ANSI escape sequence is hidden
from watch (wrapped in a shell script like this:)

#!/bin/sh
printf "\033[43mWhite-On-Red\033[0m\n"

call this script 'wor', chmod +x wor and try:

watch -c ./wor

Again, color is gone.

I'm using procps_3.3.9 on Ubuntu.

   procps  1:3.3.9-1ubuntu2.2

Tried to build from source ('apt-get source procps; cd procps-3.3.9/; make')
and the issue is still there.

[Bug 890152] Re: Rekonq run in background when closed

2015-08-14 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
Hi. I am using Kubuntu 14.04 and I still see this bug. When I close
rekonq after using at least one tab with some webpage, the rekonq
process remains in background, along with one or more kio_http
processes. Next time I want to launch rekonq it doesn't appear, and I
must manually kill all the previous processes.

2015-05-29 Thread Ariel Keselman
hi, I have the same issue however none of the above fixed it for me:

- kernel 4.1rc2 doesnt fix it
- booting with bluetooth of doesnt fix it either

it just says connecting and the goes back to disconnected state, exactly
as stated above.

I also have a Y50 with an Intel 3160. I also updated the firmware but
nothing seems to help...

[Bug 1435061] Re: KDE 5 is corrupted, after updating Kubuntu

2015-04-25 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
Also, the akonadi failed miserabily, leaving me without my PIM. The
network interfaces, while I can manage to use, are really slow, and
keeps failing within minutes.

The removable storage fails too, randomly, so you can't make a reliable
backup.

And, finally, every configuration in Power Manager is changed.

DON'T UPGRADE TO 15.04 unless you're a tester. You can lose your data.

[Bug 1435061] Re: KDE 5 is corrupted, after updating Kubuntu

2015-04-25 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
I upgraded to 15.04 and now I have the following issues:

· I cannot login to KDE desktop in failsafe mode, and is a nightmare to get in
the plasma desktop
· The Network Manager is having random issues: the wifi is disconnecting after
several minutes, so I can't even do a proper aptitude upgrade. I'm having
trouble even to fill this bug report.
· Everytime I login onto the Plasma desktop I get a black desktop, with
apparently nothing on it: if I hover the mouse where the panels are suppose to
be, I get notifications, but this situation is unnaceptable for a release.

I did what Sherif told, also killing some processes in order to get a
workaround to use the desktop.

Really, this situation is unnaceptable. I can't work, and I think I can
barely do an emergency backup to a pendrive in orden to reinstall the
14.10.

Is important to point out that I'm using a 64-bit version of Kubuntu, in
a MSI M670 laptop. I expected some things to be more slower than normal,
but this is ridiculous.

[Bug 1445706] [NEW] Missing import feature in KJots

2015-04-17 Thread Ariel Sebastián Becker
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 14.10
Release:14.10
64 bit version
-
kjots:
  Installed: 4:4.14.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 4:4.14.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.14.1-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://ar.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
-
Older versions of KJots had a feature to restore or import books exported with
the same app (an useful feature for migrations) but this version doesn't have
it.

OK, this is not serious; I can extract the information from the XML
file, but think about the rookies there.

Also I tried the kjotsmigrator utility but without success.

I've attached a screenshot of the file menu. You can see the export
option, but not any import.

It seems that you have to put a .book extension to the file you've
exported before. Then, using the kjotsmigrator tool with the
--interactive parameter, everything goes smooth.

My english is bad, so here's a good reading (PDF): http://docs-

[Bug 570601] Re: Doesn't recognize S, M keys upon mount error

2015-03-22 Thread ariel cornejo
Bug persists in 14.10. I had to put the missing drive back to be able
to boot.

A few observations:
* pressing Control-Alt-F(1-5) results in an unresponsive black screen with just
the five dots being repainted.
* pressing Control-Alt-F7 to go back shows the same as above, except every key
pressed while trying to skip to that VT is visible and further keystrokes are
also echoed.

[Bug 1313042] Re: console-kit-daemon Glib-CRITICAL warning

2014-07-07 Thread Ariel Faigon
I figured the reason for my hangs was unrelated to the GLIB warning.
I had a sub process of the main job blocking on stdin input when arguments were
missing, the main job was waiting for the sub process to finish so it didn't
exit(1). Bottom line: the hang cause was a silly bug in one of my own
scripts.  Sorry about that.

So there's no hang issue in this bug - there's only a GLIB misuse and
console warning.

I updated the bug description to be shorter/simpler accordingly.

I consider the severity/priority much lower now.

Minor heads-up:
Those using Christopher's PPA need to either hold the relevant package
versions, or tweak the APT policy:

$ cat /etc/apt/preferences.d/townsend-compiz
Package: *
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-townsend-compiz-nvidia-refresh-test
Pin-Priority: 600

Otherwise, the numerically-higher version of compiz in the Ubuntu repo
will replace the patched package.

2014-05-18 Thread Ariel Faigon
Hi johnnyb0y,

Your system feeling lethargic is unlikely to be related to the GLib-CRITICAL
warnings appearing in the logs.
They are just coincidental.

Check the output of `top` for heavy processes. In particular upgrade to
14.04 starts a very heavy new search indexing process called
`/usr/bin/baloo_file` which I had to disable to get speed back. Check
other bugs related to baloo for solutions.

[Bug 1313042] Re: console-kit-daemon related ssh session hang w/ Glib-CRITICAL warning

2014-04-29 Thread Ariel Faigon
The GLib-CRITICAL error applies to many applcations which call
g_source_remove() with garbage parameters.

libglib2 changed recently to check for this error, instead of silently
ignoring it, so the error started showing in multiple places.

The hang in consolekit happens independently of the call to
g_source_remove() which is I suspect is simply a part of closing down
the session.

Also: turns out: ssh was just coincidental
I am now able to reproduce the hang _without the GLib error_ in a local konsole
session too.

To try and reprodce (not always, only happens intermittently)
1) Upgrade to 14.04
2) Open a konsole window and create several tabs in it
3) Run a command which is both CPU intensive on multiple cores, and generates
output. I was much more successful reproducing when the command takes more
than a minute to run and generates several hundred lines of output.
4) When the command finishes the konsole window tab in which the command was
run no longer accepts input

[Bug 1264368] Re: GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID was not found when attempting to remove it - warning when leaving Network menu of g-c-c

2014-04-25 Thread Ariel Faigon
Quote from an upstream (bugzilla.gnome.org) comment:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=721369

GLib recently started throwing a warning when g_source_remove()
is passed garbage (as per warning). Your applications have probably been
broken
for a while, and there's no telling what could actually have happened in the
past when g_source_remove() would happily close any random source because
the
programmer got the wrong argument to g_source_remove().

So if true, it looks like this should be reasssigned either to Glib, or
to all the affected applications.

The problem isn't just the error (log pollution). When the error
occurs, I see ssh sessions actually hang when console-kit-daemon prints
the error. This is a regression in 14.04 vs 13.10.

[Bug 1264368] Re: GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID was not found when attempting to remove it - warning when leaving Network menu of g-c-c

2014-04-21 Thread Ariel Faigon
Also affecting console-kit-daemon:

Apr 21 18:15:22 xx console-kit-daemon[3357]: GLib-CRITICAL: Source ID 462 was
not found when attempting to remove it
Apr 21 18:15:22 xx console-kit-daemon[3357]: GLib-CRITICAL: Source ID 48 was
not found when attempting to remove it

Apr 21 18:15:25 xx console-kit-daemon[3357]: GLib-CRITICAL: Source ID 86 was
not found when attempting to remove it
Apr 21 18:15:25 xx console-kit-daemon[3357]: GLib-CRITICAL: Source ID 86 was
not found when attempting to remove it

In my case it started happening immediately after the upgrade from 13.10
to 14.04.

[Bug 1307530] [NEW] Error in init script

2014-04-14 Thread Ariel Wainer
Public bug reported:

With the default init script, this when trying to stop the daemon:

# /etc/init.d/atop stop
Stopping atop system monitor: start-stop-daemon: unrecognized option '--retry'
Try `start-stop-daemon --help' for more information.

Removing --retry 2 from line 40 fixes the issue.

[Bug 1267871] [NEW] Getting Aw, Snap! from all web pages (excluding internal pages or localhost)

2014-01-10 Thread Ariel Zelivansky
Public bug reported:

Version detail: Version 31.0.1650.63 Ubuntu 13.10
(31.0.1650.63-0ubuntu0.13.10.1~20131204.1). I should also mention I am
using Xubuntu.

All pages start loading for less than a second, and then the Aw, Snap!
page shows up. However, pages from localhost show without an issue, also
internal chromium pages (such as settings) appear correctly.

Additionally, common workarounds aren't helping (that is, disabling
extensions, running chromium with --temp-profile flag).
