[Bug 771448] Re: desktop wall edge flipping broken

2013-10-20 Thread bowser
Hi, Paddy Landau,

I am able to get it working conistently finally with help from Ubuntu
forums

Open ccsm, go to Preferences Plugin list and uncheck the box
Automatic Plugin Sorting, on the right panel Enabled Plugins, move
wall to the bottom of the list (or close to the bottom) and then
restart Ubuntu. It has been working consistently ever since.

This works in Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit. I think it would work in 12.04 as
well . For 12.04, I used to go to gconf-editor and go to apps compiz-1
general screen0 options and edited the list and put wall at the
bottom or close to it. This was working consistently in 12.04 but
doesn't work for 13.10 any more (and the list is located at a different
place in gconf-editor)

[Bug 1185616] Re: wings3d does not run on ubuntu 13 that needed dependencies.

2013-07-24 Thread bowser
You can install a static copy of wings3d by simply downloading a .run
file from it website, make it executable and run it. It will install a
static copy of wings3d in /home (or you can run it in /opt) with all the
dependencies bundled with it.

The dependency problem likely will never be fixed (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/erlang/+bug/438365)
It is no big deal as far as wings3d is concern because installing the static
version with the .run file is as easy or easier than apt-get and there is no
dependecy problem to worry about. I add an affect me too simply because I
think they should at least have the courtesy to remove wings3d in the
repository if they can't fix or won't fix the dependency problem. It reflects
badly on Ubuntu to leave packages with known broken dependencies in the repo.

[Bug 1179801] Re: Can't connect to A2DP Device in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-07-12 Thread bowser
Blueman always fails to connect to my srs-btx300 bluetooth speaker with
the error stream setup failed in 13.04 (it works in 12.04 in another
partition on same machine)

However I am able to connect reliably with the gnome-bluetooth applet
that comes with Ubuntu's default install. The problem with g-b applet is
that it cannot find my device, however if I first run in the terminal
hcitool scan, then click Set up New Device on the g-b applet menu
it would be able to discover the device, and once the device shows up
just follow the steps and connection is established quite easilly.

[Bug 1162954] Re: Nvdia blank black windows

2013-07-10 Thread bowser
Hi Andre',

Did you try using alt-tab to pick windows where there are a few
instances of the same application in use (say two pdf files opened with
evince) so that 1) they are minimized and 2) focused to full screen?

As described in post #13 this appears to be the only scenario in which
I would still get the black windows using alt-tab (wth the shift
switcher it is a bit unpredictable, this will always produce black
windows, but there are other scenarios which will result in black
windows only some times, described in #13)

I have never enabled focus animation as far as I can remember (it was
set to 'none', I think). At the moment I have replaced the stock Compiz
build from the repository with version 0.9.10.2 from
https://launchpad.net/~smspillaz/+archive/compiz-experimental and ccsm
doesn't even have a focus option in animation.

Warning. Don't use the Compiz experimental ppa now as the Unity build
apparently has not kept up so upgrading with it at this time would break
Unity. If anyone wants to try wait til the ppa is updated. I have
disabled the ppa after I have upgraded several times and got my sweet
spot.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2013-06-20 Thread bowser
Use Nvidia 319.23 (xorg-edgers) with the Compiz experimental ppa in
13.04 (though I don't think this ppa is essential and sometimes it does
break Unity, so I have stopped updating from it after a while) Here are
how things stand on my system

I) If all windows are non minimized, then no black window switching either with
alt-tab or the shift switcher.

2) if some windows are minimized but there is only one isntance for such
applications (e.g no two instances of evince for two pdf documents),
then no black windows switching with alt-tab

3) if the minized windows (may have more than one instances of the same
applications) restore to non maximized windows than no black windows
using the alt-tab switcher.

4) Always get black windows with shift switcher if some applications are
minimized (regardless of how many instances are in use)

5) Get black windows with alt-tab for applications with more than one
instances in use and minimized AND only for those instances that restore
to maximized windows.

6) One way to avoid ALL black windows would be to enable the scale addon
in ccsm and use a hot corner to pick windows (i.e using Unity like Gnome
Shell) There is no black window under any scenario.

So, if I am switching Windows with the scale addon (like using gnome-
shell) I am able to avoild black windows al together and even if I get a
black window say in using alt-tab in scenario 5 moving the cursor to the
hot corner to refocus the open black window would make it normal again.

Since it doesn't look like this bug will be fixed this is the best I can
do. By using mostly the hot corner I have restored normal work flow
pretty much and haven't seen any black window for quite some time.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

Hmmm..

Just updated compiz and unity with Sam Spilsbury's ppa
https://launchpad.net/~smspillaz/+archive/compiz-
experimental?field.series_filter=raring

Now the blank black windows don't appear (for applications with multiple
instances in use but minimized) with the alt tab switcher provided the
applications don't open to full screen. So suppose I have multiple pdf
minimized and I try to select one of them with alt-tab, if I focus on
an instance which opens to full screen I still see the blank
blackscreen. But if I choose an instance which opens to a smaller window
then it is normal.

2013-04-20 Thread bowser
Hi Andre,

Since the compiz packages in 12.04 is rather old even if they fix the
problem it will probably take a long time for them to backport it if at
all. So I have basically given up waiting and use nouveau on my 12.04
installation. Following the thread (bugs 729979) I thought a fix has
been released for Raring, but it seems that it doesn't really work.

[Bug 1162954] Re: Nvdia blank black windows

2013-04-13 Thread bowser
@Felipe

I watched your video, no sure which DE you are using, but I have never
had the black window problem if I use the mouse to choose applications
from the launcher. The bug is triggered only when I use the alt-tab
launcher(or the shift launcher) to choose among applications that are
already in use, and with raring it only happens when more than one
instances of the same applications are in use. e.g If Firefox (one
instance), vlc (one instance) and two instances of evenice (2 pdf
documents) are in use and all minimized. Using the alt-tab launcher to
choose either Firefox or Vlc doesn't result in black windows, but
focusing on either instance of evince will.

I have replaced the default window decorator with emerald but it doesn't
make a difference.

The only thing that works for me is to disable animation from ccsm,
but that result in abrupt motion when opening closing maximizing and
minimizing windows.

[Bug 1162954] [NEW] Nvdia blank black windows

2013-04-01 Thread bowser
Public bug reported:

When switching applications with Unity's alt-tab switcher (or shift
switcher) the target windows appear to be blank black if more than one
instances of the application are in use (e.g several pdf documents with
evince or several spreadsheets with LibreOffice's Calc) This doesn't
happen when only one instance of the application is in use (e.g just one
pdf document)

This has been reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/729979, it says
that a fix has been released (compiz 0.9.9~daily13.02.19-0ubuntu1) even
though the problem still persists in raring daily build (compiz
0.99~daily13.03.29 Ubuntu1) I am using Nvidia driver 313 on raring daily
build.

I am opening a new bug report because bug 729979 seems to be closed as
a fix is supposed to have been released and it has not have any activity
for a while (other than a few comments asking if the fix would be
backported and two comments,--one by myself,--saying that the fix
doesn't work in raring but have receieved no answer or comment)

Thanks.

[Bug 1038781] Re: -dev packages are missing alternate depends on -extra packages

2012-11-12 Thread bowser
It seems that these problematic packages are backported Precise.
Today I get a bunch of updates for the -dev files which cannot be
updated because of conflicts with the -extras packages. This is not a
big deal for my current install but if I do a new install of Precise
this bug would affect 12.04 exactly as it does 12.10. What happens??

I use om26er's ppa and it solves the problem completely. Tried
Dimitry's steps but cannot reproduce the bug. Ubuntu 12.04 and
LibreOffice 3.6 from ppa. I think it is fixed in 12.10, though I have no
idea whether the fix affects the global menu because I have uninstalled

[Bug 1069635] Re: chromium browser can not load plugin

2012-11-01 Thread bowser
Actually it doesn't work in Firefox either. I will file a separate bug
against it. On Firefox gecko-mediaplayer does start to load but then
will get stuck at 19% whereas the totem plugin works fine on these
stream.

Downgrade to 1.04 (the Precise version) it still doesn't work but the
behaviour is consistent in Chrome and Firefox, gecko-mediaplayer loads
but then soon stuck.

[Bug 993397] Re: vdpau not working (well) with Ubuntu12.04 Unity

2012-10-22 Thread bowser
Ok, reinstalled 12.04 and upgraded the Nvidia driver with xorg-edgers,
vdpau is working again. But compiz is consumming a lot of cpu cycle even
when idle. The high cpu usage is not observed in 12.10 so it appears to
be a Compiz bug which is fixed in 12.10 but have not been backported to
12.04 yet. A work around is to uncheck sync to Vbank in both Nvidia
settings and ccsm 's OpenGL tab then compiz's cpu usage becomes normal
again.

[Bug 1012952] Re: Screenshot is not saved in ~/Pictures, despite reported upstream GNOME behaviour.

[Bug 1024773] [NEW] gecko-mediaplayer not working in Chrome

2012-07-14 Thread bowser
Public bug reported:

gecko-mediaplayer no longer works in Chrome in Ubuntu 12.04. (currently
Chrome is in version 20, but it has been like that for a while)For
example, go to http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger/test.html and choose
video AVI(divx) from the menu and the gecko-mediaplayer plugin crashes
in such a way that a window for gnome-mplayer pops out of the webpage
and it just freezes. This happens on every site that I have tried. Even
the audio player crashes. For divX streaming I can use the totem plugin
(though not as good) but for sites that require Windows media player
gecko seems to be the only Linux option.

On Firefox everything works without issue. Also gecko-mediaplayer works
perfectly on Chrome (same versions, currently 20) in Ubuntu 11.04 and
Fedora 17. So there may be a problem with the Ubuntu 12.04 build of
Chrome or gecko-mediaplayer.

I have installed gecko-mediaplayer 1.04 from the standard repo and
upgraded to 1.06 from a ppa
https://launchpad.net/~ed10vi86/+archive/video, The same problem exists
for both versions.

[Bug 993397] Re: vdpau not working (well) with Ubuntu12.04 Unity

2012-06-16 Thread bowser
Actually, on my machine DISABLING sync to vBlank(in both Nvidia settings
and ccsm), not enabling it (which is enabled by default) partially
works around the problem (it does not work for full screen), see my post
#3

If furthermore, undericted fullscreen windows is checked in ccsm then
vdpau works perfectly in XBMC but still not work for mplayer and
mplayer2. But it has other side effects such as tearing for Desktop
cube.

IIRC there is an option in KDE which disables Desktop compositing for
fullscreen applications, I think something like that would probably
solve the problem if available in Unity.

[Bug 993397] Re: vdpau not working (well) with Ubuntu12.04 Unity

2012-06-16 Thread bowser
@c10ud

Hi, I am aware of the 'enable gpu acceleration' option in vlc, but it
never works. You have to compile vlc and ffmpeg with the proper options
enabled for vaapi to work.

http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_VAAPI

Moreover, the way VLC uses vdpau (through vaapi) is not efficient (see
first paragraph of link above) so even if that is enabled cpu usage is
still much higher than mplayer, mplayer2 and XBMC. VLC may have other
nifty features, but it is not the best Linux mediaplayer if you watch a
lot of HD videos IMO. If you have a vdpau enabled Nvidia card, mplayer
usually works a lot better, and mplayer2 is the best.

@c10ud

Vlc doesn't use vdpau (if you compile it yourself instead of install
from the repo than it can use vdpau through vaapi, but very
inefficiently) So it is not a proper test for this bug. mplayer and xbmc
do use vdpau, when cpu usage is high for those two then there is a
problem.

[Bug 993397] [NEW] vdpau not working (well) with Ubuntu12.04 Unity

2012-05-02 Thread bowser
Public bug reported:

vdpau works very poorly in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on Unity3d. Same 1080p
movies use around 6-10% of cpu in 11.04 and 11.10 shoots up to 50-60% of
cpu usage in 12.04 with vdpau and mplayer (all under Unity 3d) . I have
tried several nvidia drivers and the results are the same (Nvidia
current 295.40, 295.20 and 295.33 32 bits) Videocard is Nvidia G105M

This seems to be a Unity rather than a Nvidia bug as cpu usage drops
back to around 6 -10% for same movies in Gnome shell.

precise this doesn't work in Unity 3d, have to do it in Unity 2d or GS
because of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/adobe-
flashplugin/+bug/865672)

Then use flashvideoreplacer addon for Firefox with gecko-mediaplayer as
the backend (set gnome-mplayer to use vdpau to get gpu acceleration.
This allows you to watch Youtube in the Firefox without flash (there are
also dedicated Youtube players like minitube and Smplayer,--the latest
version from ppa has a Youtube viewer)

Alternatively the blue tint will go away if you enable hardware
acceleration for flash but then it becomes very unstable and crashes on
many sites.

[Bug 993397] Re: vdpau not working (well) with Ubuntu12.04 Unity

2012-05-02 Thread bowser
Just upgraded the Nvidia driver to 302.07 (via xorg-edgers) Still the
same, vdpau works perfectly in Gnome Shell but only semi working Unity
3d (without vdpau CPU usage ~100%, with vdpau cpu usage ~ 50-60% in
Unity 3d, 6-10% in Gnome Shell,--and Unity3d for 11.04 and 11.10)

It seems that Unity3d in Precise is the culprit, so I have added that to
affect package.

[Bug 983277] Re: vdpau HW decode not working with session types 'ubuntu' and 'gnome-classic'

2012-05-02 Thread bowser
Found a partial workaround. Disable 'sync to vbank' in both ccsm (under
OpenGL)and Nvidia Xserver Settings (under Xserver Xvideo Settings) and
vdpau works again for mplayer2 (haven't tested with mplayer)

This however doesn't work for xbmc(cpu usage still at ~60% with vdpau
under Unity 3D and it drops to ~6% in Gnome Shell) Also, disabling
'sync to vbank' has the side effect of introducing tearing when rotating
the Compiz cube.

[Bug 982710] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40 driver is extremely slow

2012-05-01 Thread bowser
I also notice watching video with vdpau consumes abnormally high cpu
usage. For the same video, in Natty the cpu usage using mplayer2 with
vdpau (Nvidia295.20) is somewhere between 5 to 15%, in Precise it is
around 50% even though vdpau is enabled (I know it is enabled aside from
terminal output because it works in gnome shell, see below)

But I am not sure if this is just a Nvidia driver bug because cpu usage
drops drastically when I switched to gnome-shell (even though still a
few percentage over Natty with Nvidia295.20) I will file a separate bug
if necessary.

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-04-29 Thread bowser
Why would you break vdpau and cripple your graphic card drastically just
because of Youtube?? This has to be the most insane suggestion I hear.
:)

You don't need flash for Youtube! Here are a few alternatives (the bug
affects only Youtube)

flashvideoreplacer, a Firfox addon

 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashvideoreplacer/

literna magica , a script that play videos without flash on many
websites including Youtube

http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org/

smplayer (latest from ppa has youtube player)

All use mplayer as backend (if you install gecko-mediaplayer and since
you have Nvida card you get hardware acceleration with vdpau.

So it would be nice if adobe fix the problem, It is no big deal even if
it doesn't.

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-04-29 Thread bowser
@ Linards Ticmanis

If Ubuntu can't ship a fix, then ship a workaround, for heaven's sake.
If flashplayer is unmaintained, it's time to throw it out and go with
one of the clones, even if they're not perfect. There *will* be bad
security holes discovered even in 11.2 at some point in the not too far
future, you can bet on that.

I would rather not because the 'clones' (lightspark and gnash if that is
what you mean) doesn't work almost 100% of the time. It is going to give
Ubuntu a really bad reputation if it is shipped with these. Like I
said, you don't need flash or any of its 'clones' for Youtube ( and the
clones don't even work 99.99% of the time, check them out yourself) ,
and you can still use flash for everything else where it is needed. With
the 'clones' you have near zero access to all flash contents, peroid
(except for the demos they put out, of course)

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-04-27 Thread bowser
It only affects Youtube and only when you have a Nvidia card. The most
elegant solution is to simply not use flash for Youtube. Install the
flashvideoreplacer addon for Firefox and use the gecko-mediaplayer as
the backend. It works better than flash anyway, and you can get hardware
accelearation via vdpau (since it is mplayer)

If you don't use firefox, install the latest smplayer from rvm's ppa,
it has a Youtube viewer, and since it is mplayer you get great hardware
acceleration via vdpau.

[Bug 962629] [NEW] rendering pdf converted from ps

2012-03-22 Thread bowser
Public bug reported:

I find that when evince opens certain pdf files most of the contents are
blank while Okular can display these same files with no problem. For
example, the pdf version of this file http://arxiv.org/abs/0909.4561

With more experimentations it seems that that problem only happens with
pdf files which have been converted from postscripts. For example, in
the link above, evince could display the .ps version of the article, but
if convert it to .pdf (with ps2pdf) and try to open it with evince
again, one gets the same garbled display same as what happened when one
download the pdf file from the link and open it with evince. I cannot be
sure, but it seems that all the pdf files I have had problems were
converted from ps files (downloaded from academic sites which always
have a ps version) Again Okular displays all these files with no issue.

Ubuntu version 11.04, evince 2.32.0

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-05 Thread bowser
Mark,

We understand that there is a cost to every option, that is not the
issue. The issue is whether it is a good trade off, I am sure you
understand that too, otherwise why not just remove all options and then
end of story? I think the disagreement is whether including the dodge is
a good trade off, many of us think it is because this is a very nice
feature that makes Unity look and feel really sophisticated. Moreover,
it is not a new feature request, it is something that has been working
very well since Natty, therefore we don't think it is an unreasonable
request, it is not like we expect you to create something new from
scratch.

The reason you gave is that some new users may be confused, now some of
us are actually new users under any reasonable definition. As someone
above mentioned he has started using Ubuntu only since Oneric. Is that
new enough? I am sure there are more new users who would feel the same,
but they just don't know that the dodge is removed in 12.04 and how to
file a bug report.

I don't know how you conduct your focus groups and how many people you
have surveyed, but here there are almost 90 people who care enough to
file a bug report,--as usual people who care enough to file a bug report
are just a small percent of those who feel the same but either too lazy
to or not knowing how. The list seems to be growing everyday too. I
think as far as opinions and feedback go, ours is just as valid as those
users who find the dodge confusing.

As an aside I just don't understand how the doge would be confusing
after maybe 5 minutes of use. If they can't wrap their heads around the
dodge then they probably would find all of Unity confusing and windows
XP a lot more to their taste. I think this is part of the reason that
some of us find your explanation not very convincing. But as other said,
all you need to address that would be to change the default.

Finally, please don't be so antagonistic. We are not demanding, this is
just a request. As I said before, we do like Unity and appreciate that
you and your team has created it. This is not one of those Unity sucks
and why not stick to gnome2 conversations, please don't react as if it
is.

Thanks.

2012-03-02 Thread bowser
Please reconsider Mark. The people who post here are not Unity haters,
but some of its most enthusiastic users, or they wouldn't even care,
just switch to classic fall back or gnome shell and that would be it. We
are not asking for new feature, just that please don't remove an already
existing feature which has worked very well for many of us, and has
been advertised as one of the cool features unique to Unity. Some of the
people who will miss it are definitely new users, so why us that our
voices carry no weight for you? Thanks.

[Bug 896709] Re: Unity - selecting instances of a minimised application is not intuitive or simple

2011-11-27 Thread bowser
I would just like to say that I agree with Chris.

Since Unity is ostensibly designed to attract new users, I think the
experience of new user (rather than Ubuntu veterans) should be
paramount in this discussion. It is not uncommon even for relatively
inexperienced computer users to say, open a bunch of documents or pdf
files. If the instances are minimized, it is natural for the user to
reach for the Unity bar and attempt to open an instance. In Windows 7 if
you hover the mouse above the application's icon window preview will
show all the instances in thumb nails and the user would simply have to
choose and click one. In the Cairo dock each instance has a separate
icon, it may not be very eficient but it is easy enough to use.

In Unity there is no way to choose instances of minimized instances of
program with simple point and click. Just no way!

When you click on the icon all instances will be unminized. That is
rather unsophisticated for a launcher. Yes, alt+tab and super + w + `
(not work in Natty) works fine if you already know the hot keys but it
is neither obvious nor intuitive. Remember the rationale for Unity is to
reach for new users and Mark Shuttleworth's ambition of reaching 200
million users. I suspect most of those new users wouldn't be keyboard
jockeys and probably wouldn't be too interested in learning a whole
bunch of rather arcane and arbitrary key combos to do simple task
because Unity's design has focused so much on the keyboard and neglect
simple point and click use cases.

Finally I agree with Walter that many applications *should* have tab,
but often they don't. I have yet been able to find a native Linux pdf
reader that supports tab. So until the evince devs decide to create tab
support what are users supposed to do if they have to cross reading a
bunch of pdfs?

[Bug 144699] [gutsy] nvidia driver not loaded by default after upgrade

2007-09-25 Thread Joe Bowser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-dev

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Setup Edgy Eft with two monitors connected to an NV43 card using the nvidia
driver
2. Switch from Edgy Eft to Gutsy Gibbon by chaging the apt repositories and
doing an apt-get dist-upgrade

Expected:
The same settings will appear after boot

What happens:
They don't appear. It seems that the nvidia drivers aren't loaded properly.
The blacklist file has to be edited manually to de-blacklist the nvidia driver.
However, for some reason when an lsmod is done, the nvidia driver still
appears. It'd be nice to have the option of installing the nouveau driver if
nvidia is going to be blacklisted, and to not have to use Twinview for Dual
Monitor support. This appears to be more of an installation script issue than
an issue with the nvidia driver, but I'm not sure where else to put this bug.

[Bug 77294] gparted won't detect swapfs on Feisty Herd1

2007-01-03 Thread Joe Bowser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

On my Dell Inspiron 5150, after having problems with the Flash 9 firefox
plugin freezing the entire system, I decided to start fresh and test
Feisty Fawn on it at the same time. (It was upgraded from Dapper to
Edgy) However, when I ran gparted, it didn't recognize my 2GB swap
drive when I chose to manually edit the partition table.

I was able to delete the swap and recreate it from gparted, but it
should have recognized it as a swap partition instead of an unknown
partition.

** Affects: gparted (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 69369] Upgrade breaks init script

2006-11-01 Thread Joe Bowser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: freeradius

When upgrading from Dapper Drake to Edgy Eft using the Update Manager,
the Update Manager would exit because of an error code 0. After
investigating what was causing it, I discovered that the
/etc/init.d/freeradius script was not sourcing /lib/lsb/init-functions
properly. It contained the line:

source /lib/lsb/init-functions

I looked at /etc/init.d/apache, and I changed my freeradius init file to read
. /lib/lsb/init-functions and somehow it works, but this seems to be a bug with
the latest freeradius package during the upgrade from Dapper Drake to Edgy Eft.

** Affects: freeradius (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

3. Change the Layout to Landscape and back to Portrait

Expected:
The graphic on the upper right corner of the window will refresh showing the

After switching back to Portrait, the portrait page graphic appeared on top of
the landscape page graphic.
