[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups
Next version? This should have delayed the release at least long enough for ipv6 not to be seeded on the LiveCD. People may consider the slow internet on the livecd to be caused by the fact that you're running from a cd, but when they install it they expect it to be full speed, which should be faster than Windows. I know that ipv6 needs to replace ipv4 soon, but if trying to do it slows down the internet, and Windows isn't doing the same thing, then it is considered an Ubuntu problem and not an isp or DNS resolver problem (whether it is or not). A lot of people are willing to take any fault with Linux to an extreme and say that is why you shouldn't use it (even if it isn't true). This will make people like that go nuts because they have found a problem with Ubuntu that isn't in Windows, completely disregarding all of the problems in Windows that aren't in Ubuntu. I have not seen Windows 7, but I have heard that it is a lot to compete against and if Ubuntu has slow internet, people won't even bother looking at it. You can't say that a fix is to go this bug report and look at comment #30. If there is a workaround, it should be applied before it is installed. -- [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups
I am surprised that this isn't release critical. Probably the biggest reason people get on the computer is to use the internet and if people associate Ubuntu with slow internet, no matter how fast you make it boot, they won't want to use it. Even if it is just a workaround that is applied to the final release, it still should be done.
I agree that this bug should be considered release critical, if not just applying the workaround. What could be added to network-manager is a feature for when you connect it tries to obtain an ipv6 dns and if it succeeds, it uses the network dns resolver or if it fails then it uses pdns-resolver (I just don't think that would work for this release, maybe in Lucid) -- [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups
That's a fix in Firefox, but the problem still exists in every other network app (evolution, aptitude, etc.) So web browsing (which is what most users are doing anyway) is normal speed but everything else is behaving like you have dial-up. After the final release, if the bug isn't fixed in every app people might start complaining to their isp or even drop ubuntu (or not upgrade to Karmic) -- [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed
I'm not meaning to sound rude, but I have seen this bug fixed in previous versions, so I don't see why it has come back. However, I do not know much about nautilus under the hood, so there could have been another bug fix that occurred in the newer versions that brought this bug back. I am unable to see why the older versions can't be put into Karmic until this bug gets fixed. [Bug 178953] Re: Cannot switch to Compiz if Metacity compositor is enabled
I am running metacity version 1:2.27.0-0ubuntu3 and I am still affected by the bug. When I log in, the gconf setting for /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager is false, but metacity is running and compiz is not. I had been running compiz flawlessly until a few days ago when it crashed and Desktop effects could not be enabled from System - Preferences - Appearance. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. The problem is that when I do restart my system the problem persists. [Bug 386989] [NEW] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0 appears on screen every few seconds on tty. Thinkpad T43
Public bug reported: Every few seconds, when running the latest kernel (2.6.30-9-generic) Linux appears to think that there is a floppy that it can't read from. I have attached the output of dmesg and I used ubuntu-bug -p linux to report this. When I am typing, however, output of this doesn't occur, however, when I am not typing, every 8 seconds, this appears on a tty (not in gnome-terminal, however). This does not interfere with the command I am typing. For example, if I were to be typing /etc/init.d/g and I pause right there, the message pops up, and I finish with dm restart It would run just fine. The problem also occurs while using a text editor such as nano. The text would appear in the lines that are being edited, however, if I move the cursor over top of them, they go back to what is actually in the text file. I am running a Thinkpad T43 with 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 1.86 GHz Pentium M Processor. There is no floppy drive built in. This bug does not exist in old kernel versions (2.6.24 is the earliest kernel version I remember. I first started using Ubuntu at Hardy). [Bug 367522] [NEW] When holding down Alt+Tab in Ring Switcher, X Restarts
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I have the ring switcher enabled, the application switcher disabled, and any other switcher disabled. [Bug 354089] Re: In the window selector, it shows windows from all workspaces
I have also found that the thumbnail that appears when you hover over a window isn't on the windows that aren't on that workspace. Here is the screenshot. I have the configuration options open on the bottom and the firefox and the e-mails are not on that workspace. ** Attachment added: Screenshot.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24728647/Screenshot.png -- In the window selector, it shows windows from all workspaces https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/354089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 354089] Re: In the window selector, it shows windows from all workspaces
I installed Jaunty alpha 6 and I upgraded to the Beta via apt-get. I use the compiz settings manager, but the problem existed even before I got that. -- In the window selector, it shows windows from all workspaces https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/354089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It's fixed now, I don't know what happened between then and now, but it got fixed. I didn't update anything, however I did subscribe to the akirad repository in an attempt to get Cinelerra. [Bug 350442] [NEW] Fire on screen not full screen when rotating cube with a cube zoom
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I have the desktop cube on a zoom level other than 0 (0.75). (Under Compiz - Desktop - Rotate Cube - General - Zoom). I also have fire enabled (Compiz - Effects - Paint Fire on the Screen). When I have fire on the screen and I rotate the cube (it is a cylinder) the fire gets zoomed out along with the cube, but it doesn't get distorted with the desktop. What I would like is to either have the fire cover the whole screen even when rotating, or to have the fire cover the workspaces on the cube. ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Fire on screen not full screen when rotating cube with a cube zoom https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/350442 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 345145] [NEW] Console Font not loaded when usplash in on
Public bug reported: I have console-setup configured so that it uses the VGA font instead of Fixed. However, when I boot, I leave usplash on and it boots fine. However, if I boot with usplash, and I go to tty1-6, the font is Fixed, not VGA. I have to run the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup. All I do is press enter through the whole thing and the font gets reloaded, but I have to waste time running the command, and I lose my train of thought. I personally think the Fixed font is ugly and I don't know why the Ubuntu developers made it. I am running Ubuntu 8.10. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Console Font not loaded when usplash in on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345145 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
