After the recent update to Unity 5.10, preformance on my laptop seems to have degraded. This is espacially noticable when I have Unity's dash in maximised mode (my prefered mode). I had to switch over to Unity 2D (which is excellent BTW) for the time being. Compiz idles at about 25% CPU. Under Unity 2D, the system idles near zero. It also runs a lot cooler than before. [Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
The global menu seems confusing to some users I've introduced to Ubuntu. Some of them never got the hang of it without me pointing it out. I suggest some sort of hint to the presence of a menu, but I have no idea what it could be. I vote having the menu localized to a frame when not maximized. I think the global menu is the only real issue people I know have with unity, otherwise they are quite impressed. Also the global menu doesn't let me 'bee line' the cursor to a menu item. I have to move my mouse to the bar (in the approximate location with practice and memorization) and then adjust its position if it wasn't on target. Seems to be a pretty big problem given my PC doesn't have a lot of RAM. I'm currently using a GeForce 460 with the proprietary driver. Public bug reported: On some occasions when I boot the computer, the restart and shutdown options do not work. When selecting them in the indicator applet, it just logs out. When I delete the indicator applet, there is no shutdown or restart option in the System menu. I need to shutdown using the terminal. Other symptoms are also present, such as the audio not working and being unable to unlock any of the configuration applets notably login screen. As far as I know the problem is seemingly random and Ubuntu 10.04 most of the times boots up flawlessly (none of these problems present). This problem was not present in previous version of Ubuntu on this hardware configuration. The machine however is still powered up and will remain on until the laptop's power button is held down.
