[Bug 159031] Re: computer freezes when sshfs blocks waiting for connection
Bug reported in 2007, still problem in 2014 on 14.04. Major usability issue. The debian bug linked to above mentions not being able to suspend, which seems like a slightly different problem than the original bug report and not what I am experiencing. Nautilus / files locks up, won't open if it is killed, etc. Is there anything missing from this bug report which would be needed to act on it? [Bug 751605] Re: Multi-monitor - Windows maximize on the wrong monitor
Can anyone comment on two things? 1. What is the nature of the fix that was committed? Two proposals have been made. A: maximize window to display containing most of window's area. B: maximize window to display containing mouse. ...I hope the fix was implemented as option B, since that seems more like correct, unsurprising behavior. If someone is clicking on a titlebar button to maximize a window, or dragging a window against the top of the screen to maximize, their attention is on the display containing the mouse; and the window should go there. They are unlikely to know what proportion of the window is on what display. In fact one can easily have the majority of the window on a different display, e.g. in the case of maximizing a window to an external 800x600 projector connected to a 192x1200 laptop. 2. This fix appears to have been committed to compiz 0.9.8.8 SRU-2. Is it possible to determine whether that (or any other version of compiz with the fix) will make it into ubuntu 12.10? I'm never sure how to tell when or if to expect the fix to appear on my machine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751605 Title: Multi-monitor - Windows maximize on the wrong monitor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/751605/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 987046] [NEW] shotwell's unity progress bar hangs halfway across
Public bug reported: I love that shotwell supports the Unity progress bar on shotwell's launcher icon. But, when I open shotwell it uses the CPU heavily for several minutes, during which time the progress bar makes it about halfway across, and then stops. The progress bar stops, and fortunately the CPU usage eventually dies down as well. But then the progress bar merely remains there indefinitely. This process repeats every time I start shotwell. It's entirely possible that shotwell's trying to perform some task (related to making NEF's into jpeg thumbnails, for example?) but never finishes for some reason? So I don't know if the issue is with the progress bar specifically, or with some other task that never completes and then is re-started every time I start shotwell. In any case, I have to leave shotwell open all the time as it is difficult to work with during the extended heavy CPU usage that occurs during every startup. [Bug 970924] [NEW] can't create playlist on iPod in Rhythmbox 2.96 on Precise 12.04 beta 2
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect iPod Photo via USB 2. Click on the iPod Photo in the Devices list in Nautilus, in order to mount it (not sure why it is not mounted automatically). 3. Open Rhythmbox. 4. Right-click on iPod Photo in the Rhythmbox side pane under Devices and choose New Playlist. 5. Drag songs from iPod Photo into new playlist. At this point a playlist appears to be there. If I choose sync with library then the playlist disappears from the Rhythmbox side pane. If, instead, I eject the iPod (and unmount it in Nautilus as well, since ejecting from Rhythmbox didn't make it unmount for me), then disconnect, I can see the new playlist on the iPod but it is completely empty. Expected behavior: I create the playlist in Rhythmbox and it is immediately created on the iPod, and can be found on the iPod after the iPod has been disconnected. [Bug 970989] [NEW] cover art and cover art search plugins do not seem to do anything (undocumented last.fm requirement)
Public bug reported: Running Rhythmbox as default install in 12.04 Beta 1, I didn't see album art for many of my albums. I found that cover art and cover art search were already selected in the plugins, but that did not seem to matter. No documentation appeared anywhere online or in the built-in help related to cover art. There were no menu options that I could see appearing or disappearing when enabling/disabling the plugins. It was impossible to tell whether Rhythmbox couldn't find the cover art, if it wasn't looking in the first place. Furthermore the cover art was missing which was present in some cases with Banshee in Ubuntu 11.10. I was finally trying to submit a bug report, ran rhythmbox -d rhythmbox.log and started searching through that log file. I finally happened upon this line: (13:42:39) [0x1175690] [LastFMSearch.search] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artsearch/lastfm.py:303: can't search: no last.fm account details That is the ONLY place I saw mentioned that a last.fm account might be related to cover art searching. While it's perfectly reasonable to require some kind of service to fetch album art, this requirement is obscure and invisible to the user. There are a couple of bug reports about cover art fetching not working which could easily be a result of this. [Bug 928719] Re: Bring back Intellihide for unity as an option
There seem to be a significant number of users who like to use the dodge option and are disappointed about its demise, and I am one of them. I like to use it because it is the only way to achieve the following balance: 1. It keeps the launcher visible in situations when I don't need all of my screen real estate. It is convenient to refer to the launcher at a glance, and the launcher looks attractive. 2. It hides the launcher when I need all of my screen real estate, such as when I am maximizing a window. The autohide option achieves point 2, but does not achieve point 1. Therefore it is not an equivalent substitute for those of us who like dodge, as is often argued. The only valid use arguments I have seen against it are: 1. It tested to be confusing for a particular class of users. 2. Leaving it in place as an option can make the choice of launcher behavior more confusing for some people. The first argument does not by itself make a compelling case for removing the option. Many advanced features are confusing for some class of users, but still they are kept. Making sure this is not the default option should be sufficient to keep those users from being confused. If the feature has a legitimate use case, which I argue above that it does, and if a reasonable number of people find it useful, then it should be kept. The second argument is also weak. Someone who is poking around menus to customize the behavior of the launcher is sufficiently advanced that they can handle the overhead of looking at three options rather than two. Even if they do not understand what the option means, there are few enough options that they could even experiment and figure it out if they desired. Keeping this as an option does not somehow take the intimidation factor from Shotwell to Blender equivalent. In any case, if the primary concern is confusion, the best option would be to figure out something different to call it, rather than dodge. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/928719 Title: Bring back Intellihide for unity as an option To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/928719/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 548415] Re: Shutdown timer no longer appears
I also liked the timer -- it served a purpose that provided genuine usability advantages. Choose shutdown once and then leave. If you realize within 60 sec that you really wanted to do something else on the computer, you can cancel the shutdown. This way you don't have to confirm the shutdown if you don't want to (having to confirm is just irritating -- I just told the computer to shut down, right?), but it gives you a grace period in case you forgot something. The shutdown confirmation dialog does not accomplish this. It is actually a usability problem. Nobody sees the confirmation dialog and then sits and tries to figure out whether they really need to do something else before shutting down. It is just an box that one quickly gets trained to click on without thinking. And once one is trained to do so, then it serves absolutely no purpose and would be better if absent. There could be a valid reason for this design decision, but the reason stated by Tim Gould (who changed to won't fix) is not a valid reason. [Bug 532421] Re: Merged menu bar and window border in light themes makes it difficult to grab the right area to move windows
Why is this won't fix for firefox and invalid for openoffice? It's definitely broken in the default ubuntu 10.04 configuration, and it's a frustrating UI inconsistency. Firefox and openoffice don't behave like other applications (nautilus and gedit, for example). [Bug 382708] Re: docky in auto-hide mode only re-appears if user mouses over width of docky panel
I prefer the existing behavior: it reduces the chances of the bar getting in the way when I don't want it. [Bug 411174] Re: Hard to switch between windows grouped by an icon
Another possible alternative solution: Right now I have compiz set to show window previews when I hover over buttons in the taskbar. This also works in gnome-do, but when there are multilple windows grouped under the same icon, it only shows one of them. Would there be any way to set up gnome do such that it showed previews of all the grouped windows at once when you hover over the icon? Then if you could simply mouse up to one of the previews / thumbnails and click on it to bring that window to the front, it would be excellent. I think it would address all of the concerns expressed here. I do think the scrolling feature is very cool; but I've been using gnome-do for a while and I had no idea it was even there until reading this just now. The previews would be easily discoverable and very convenient. And you could keep the existing scrolling functionality. (Also -- I believe any thinkpad should be configurable to scroll with the middle button and the trackpoint, or with the touchpad, or both. In any case this is possible to achieve on Ubuntu. You may have to do a bit of googling.) -- Hard to switch between windows grouped by an icon https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411174 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 306602] Re: [upstream] OOo 3.0 uses comma formula field separators instead of semi-colons
This is also a problem in Karmic as of today. Haven't checked on it in Lucid yet. In Karmic, it is not _quite_ as severe. You still can't use Shift+F4 to cycle relative references when you have commas separating arguments. But if you change the commas to semicolons and cycle how you want with Shift+F4, you can hit enter and the formula is accepted by oo.calc; the semicolons are automatically converted to commas. On the other hand, the next time you want to edit the formula you have to manually change all the commas back to semicolons if you want to use Shift+F4 again. The obvious solution would just be to leave the semicolons alone in the first place... -- [upstream] OOo 3.0 uses comma formula field separators instead of semi-colons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/306602 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 446394] Re: Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible
I had the PPA fix installed. Network Manager upgrade yesterday broke my network connectivity completely, both wired and wireless. The versions that broke it for me were: network-manager_0.8-0ubuntu4~nmt4~karmic and network-manager-gnome_0.8-0ubuntu3~nmt2~karmicl. Not sure if these came from the PPA or from the main Karmic repository. No current version from PPA or from Karmic main is working for me. I was sometimes able to get connected intermittently by doing sudo dhclient from the terminal. I had to downgrade to the rc4 versions that used to be in the PPA (still had them on my machine in /var/cache/apt/archives). Posting this info here as it is relevant to those looking for a solution -- PPA above may no longer help anyone. [Bug 446394] Re: Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible
@ Tony Espy This is absolutely a regression and absolutely should be released to the standard repositories. RE: Furthermore, the case outlined here is not the typical use case, as NM should automatically re-connect a hidden network that's been previously connected. It may not be the typical use case, whatever that use case is, but it seriously breaks basic, essential functionality in other use cases, like mine. Automatically re-connecting to networks is no good unless there is only one network in range that you have ever used. I work at a place where the secured intranet is hidden, but there is also an unsecured visitor network that is visible. With my laptop I have to reconnect at hourly as I move between meetings (different access points) and my desk. With this bug, the network manager always connects to the unsecured visitor network, which is useless to me. To work around it I had to lock in the Jaunty version of network manager, which is semi-broken with the Karmic network applet (can't edit existing network connections), which prevents me from getting security updates for these packages, and which also downgrades the bluetooth code. -- Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446394 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 95326] Re: sound juicer aac formatted files skip and...
I have the same problem, AAC audio ripped by sound juicer is skipping. What information do you lack on this bug? Please let me know and I'll try to provide some. Running Feisty Fawn. Originally installed ugly codecs, etc., some stuff from multiverse, I think. Sound Juicer appears to rip the AAC file correctly, results in a file on the disk of reasonable size. Time for the tracks as displayed in Amarok, or by viewing properties in Nautilus, are much longer than the original play times (~12 minutes instead of the original 3, for example). When playing the files they consist of a fraction of a second of audio, followed by a silent gap, then more audio, more silence, etc. I looked at the instructions given by Mike above. I had originally followed some different instructions somewhere for getting the questionable codecs working, so I looked at the packages I had installed. I had many things under gstreamer0.10 installed (such as -ffmpeg, -plugins-good, -plugins-bad, -plugins-ugly, and more), but none of the gstreamer0.8 packages. Per the instructions above I installed gstreamer0.8-faac, -mad, -faad for good measure, and all dependencies. Also installed libfaac0 1.24 and faac 1.24. The problem still exists -- no discernable difference between AAC ripping before or after installing the extra packages. ** Changed in: sound-juicer (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- sound juicer aac formatted files skip and... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95326 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
