Workaround: to unfreeze Files / Nautilus must kill the offending ssh process
ps -Af | grep ssh
will give you a list to pick from

[Bug 1258837] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] ALPS touchpad keeps having state reset

2014-12-01 Thread cometdog
I have the same issue with Ubuntu 14.04 and an E7440.

The problem does not exist at all on Windows 7, using any BIOS I have
tried (A05, A08, A10). That would seem to indicate that it is a driver
issue, or can be solved by the driver.

[Bug 159031] Re: computer freezes when sshfs blocks waiting for connection

2014-05-29 Thread cometdog
Bug reported in 2007, still problem in 2014 on 14.04. Major usability
issue.

The debian bug linked to above mentions not being able to suspend, which
seems like a slightly different problem than the original bug report and
not what I am experiencing.

Nautilus / files locks up, won't open if it is killed, etc. Is there
anything missing from this bug report which would be needed to act on
it? If nothing else, Kevin's workaround above (#49) should be set as
the default configuration for Ubuntu, assuming it works. Simply trying
to reconnect will not help when the remote computer is no longer
available on the network.

[Bug 1171878] Re: Adding/Removing an external monitor causes maximized windows to move to another workspace

2014-04-03 Thread cometdog
I still observe the problem with

$ apt-cache policy compiz
compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.11+14.04.20140328-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.9.11+14.04.20140328-0ubuntu1

Example:
4 workspaces, external monitor plugged in. Applications are maximized to
primary monitors in workspaces 2 and 3. Current worspace is workspace 1. When
disconnecting the external monitor, those maximized applications move from
workspaces 2 and 3 to workspace 1.

Expected behavior: maximized applications should remain on their
original workspaces.

[Bug 1300308] [NEW] select items matching (ctrl+s) only selects one file

2014-03-31 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:
1. open folder in files/nautilus which contains multiple files and/or folders
2. type ctrl+s to bring up the select items matching dialog
3. type glob pattern into text entry field which should match multiple files
4. choose OK

observed behavior:

expected benavior:
 - all matching files should be selected

nonfunctional, and is a regression from earlier versions of nautilus /

[Bug 751605] Re: Multi-monitor - Windows maximize on the wrong monitor

2013-01-02 Thread cometdog
Can anyone comment on two things?
1. What is the nature of the fix that was committed? Two proposals have been
made. A: maximize window to display containing most of window's area. B:
maximize window to display containing mouse. ...I hope the fix was implemented
as option B, since that seems more like correct, unsurprising behavior. If
someone is clicking on a titlebar button to maximize a window, or dragging a
window against the top of the screen to maximize, their attention is on the
display containing the mouse; and the window should go there. They are
unlikely to know what proportion of the window is on what display. In fact one
can easily have the majority of the window on a different display, e.g. in the
case of maximizing a window to an external 800x600 projector connected to a
192x1200 laptop.
2. This fix appears to have been committed to compiz 0.9.8.8 SRU-2. Is it
possible to determine whether that (or any other version of compiz with the
fix) will make it into ubuntu 12.10? I'm never sure how to tell when or if to
expect the fix to appear on my machine.

[Bug 1067326] [NEW] hard lock or freeze after the computer becomes inactive

2012-10-16 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

Letting the computer sit until it becomes inactive results in a hard
lock or freeze. The screen is set to turn off, but suspend when
inactive for in power settings is set to Don't suspend.

The key combination to kill X does not work in this state (even though
it is enabled), nor will magic SysRq combinations. It is also not
possible to ssh into the box over wireless, although I have not tried a
direct ethernet cable connection.

This is completely reproducible with the current version of the kernel

[Bug 987046] Re: shotwell's unity progress bar hangs halfway across

Progress bar diappears for me in 0.12.3-0ubuntu0.1, so seems like that
fixes it.

However my problem with shotwell consuming resources and thrashing the
hard drive for several minutes after startup persists, so I guess I
should open a separate bug for that.

[Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

After upgrading to 12.04 I am now stuck with low (1024x768) resolution

but have the problem identified in this bug. For some reason I can't
coax xrandr or xorg.conf to do the right thing otherwise.

[Bug 987046] [NEW] shotwell's unity progress bar hangs halfway across

2012-04-22 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

I love that shotwell supports the Unity progress bar on shotwell's
launcher icon.

But, when I open shotwell it uses the CPU heavily for several minutes,
during which time the progress bar makes it about halfway across, and
then stops. The progress bar stops, and fortunately the CPU usage
eventually dies down as well. But then the progress bar merely remains
there indefinitely.

This process repeats every time I start shotwell. It's entirely
possible that shotwell's trying to perform some task (related to making
NEF's into jpeg thumbnails, for example?) but never finishes for some
reason? So I don't know if the issue is with the progress bar
specifically, or with some other task that never completes and then is
re-started every time I start shotwell. In any case, I have to leave
shotwell open all the time as it is difficult to work with during the
extended heavy CPU usage that occurs during every startup.

[Bug 970924] Re: can't create playlist on iPod in Rhythmbox 2.96 on Precise 12.04 beta 2

2012-04-18 Thread cometdog
It's possible this isn't getting any traffic because of the bug #496681.

I believe this is different because that one was marked fixed in
Rhythmbox upstream in 2010. I chose that #496681 affected me also
(because I can't tell for sure what the issue is from a user
perspective) but I'm concerned that one won't get any traction as it has
supposedly been taken care of...

[Bug 985096] [NEW] ipod does not show up under portable devices in sources list

2012-04-18 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

I plug in my iPod photo via USB. Mount it by clicking on it in the side
pane in Nautilus.

Observed behavior:
The iPod does not appear to be accessible from guayadeque at all.

Expected behavior:
The iPod should show up under Portable Devices in the sources pane in
guayadeque, where my iPod Classic (Video) already shows up. Then I can access
it for updating the library, creating playlists, etc.

Other info:
I can see it in Rhythmbox (2.96), and in Rhythmbox synching with my local
library seems to work. Unfortunately there the playlist creation is broken, so
that's not a suitable workaround...

[Bug 981752] [NEW] can't move selection to bottom of HUD list with arrow keys

2012-04-14 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
Type Alt to open HUD, then type something into the box (e.g. File to get some
file-related entries).

Press the down-arrow. The selection moves down to the next entry, but
almost immediately hops back up to the top on its own. Even if I press
the down-arrow rapidly and repeatedly, I can only occasionally get the
selection to move down to the third item, and I can never get it to go
down any farther than that.

Expected behavior:
If I press the arrow, the selection should move to the next entry down and stay
there. I should be able to move through all the visible rows of the HUD with
the arrow keys. This is a keyboard-driven interface, so it doesn't make sense
to have to use the mouse to select an entry that's not at the top of the list.

[Bug 947863] Re: gtkpod crashed with signal 5 in g_settings_bind_with_mapping()

Any chance this will get fixed in Precise? Between this and Rhythmbox
not working with playlists, I'm totally dead in the water for using my

users who prefer to run Ubuntu for their OS...

[Bug 496681] Re: Rhythmbox does not save playlist on iPod

Not working in Rhythmbox 2.96 on Precise. Can create list in Rhythmbox

disappears. Instead, if I eject the iPod after creating the list but
without syncing, I see an empty playlist on the iPod with that name.

[Bug 970924] [NEW] can't create playlist on iPod in Rhythmbox 2.96 on Precise 12.04 beta 2

2012-04-01 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect iPod Photo via USB
2. Click on the iPod Photo in the Devices list in Nautilus, in order to mount
it (not sure why it is not mounted automatically).
3. Open Rhythmbox.
4. Right-click on iPod Photo in the Rhythmbox side pane under Devices and
choose New Playlist.
5. Drag songs from iPod Photo into new playlist.

At this point a playlist appears to be there. If I choose sync with
library then the playlist disappears from the Rhythmbox side pane. If,
instead, I eject the iPod (and unmount it in Nautilus as well, since
ejecting from Rhythmbox didn't make it unmount for me), then disconnect,
I can see the new playlist on the iPod but it is completely empty.

Expected behavior:
I create the playlist in Rhythmbox and it is immediately created on the iPod,
and can be found on the iPod after the iPod has been disconnected.

[Bug 970989] [NEW] cover art and cover art search plugins do not seem to do anything (undocumented last.fm requirement)

2012-04-01 Thread cometdog
Public bug reported:

Running Rhythmbox as default install in 12.04 Beta 1, I didn't see album
art for many of my albums. I found that cover art and cover art
search were already selected in the plugins, but that did not seem to
matter. No documentation appeared anywhere online or in the built-in
help related to cover art. There were no menu options that I could see
appearing or disappearing when enabling/disabling the plugins.

It was impossible to tell whether Rhythmbox couldn't find the cover art,
if it wasn't looking in the first place. Furthermore the cover art was
missing which was present in some cases with Banshee in Ubuntu 11.10.

I was finally trying to submit a bug report, ran
rhythmbox -d rhythmbox.log
and started searching through that log file. I finally happened upon this line:
(13:42:39) [0x1175690] [LastFMSearch.search]
/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artsearch/lastfm.py:303: can't search: no last.fm
account details

That is the ONLY place I saw mentioned that a last.fm account might be
related to cover art searching. While it's perfectly reasonable to
require some kind of service to fetch album art, this requirement is
obscure and invisible to the user.

There are a couple of bug reports about cover art fetching not working
which could easily be a result of this.

[Bug 928719] Re: Bring back Intellihide for unity as an option

2012-02-19 Thread cometdog
There seem to be a significant number of users who like to use the dodge
option and are disappointed about its demise, and I am one of them.

I like to use it because it is the only way to achieve the following balance:
1. It keeps the launcher visible in situations when I don't need all of my
screen real estate. It is convenient to refer to the launcher at a glance, and
the launcher looks attractive.
2. It hides the launcher when I need all of my screen real estate, such as when
I am maximizing a window.
The autohide option achieves point 2, but does not achieve point 1. Therefore
it is not an equivalent substitute for those of us who like dodge, as is often
argued.

The only valid use arguments I have seen against it are:
1. It tested to be confusing for a particular class of users.
2. Leaving it in place as an option can make the choice of launcher behavior
more confusing for some people.

The first argument does not by itself make a compelling case for
removing the option. Many advanced features are confusing for some
class of users, but still they are kept. Making sure this is not the
default option should be sufficient to keep those users from being
confused. If the feature has a legitimate use case, which I argue above
that it does, and if a reasonable number of people find it useful, then
it should be kept.

The second argument is also weak. Someone who is poking around menus to
customize the behavior of the launcher is sufficiently advanced that
they can handle the overhead of looking at three options rather than
two. Even if they do not understand what the option means, there are
few enough options that they could even experiment and figure it out if
they desired. Keeping this as an option does not somehow take the
intimidation factor from Shotwell to Blender equivalent. In any
case, if the primary concern is confusion, the best option would be to
figure out something different to call it, rather than dodge.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2011-11-18 Thread cometdog
Incredibly bad responsiveness under heavy IO for me on Oneiric. My only
recent point of comparison is Lucid. Unfortunately it's not completely
fair since I had a different HDD setup then. But in any case, desktop
gets nearly unusable when starting up a program, etc. Freezes for
multiple seconds at a time.

[Bug 751689] Re: Thinkpad x201* overheats due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2011-08-03 Thread cometdog
I can confirm the problem on Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo W500 with kernel
2.6.35-30-generic-pae-tuxonice (and every other recent kernel I've
tried).

Can't boot with BIOS AC setting on Balanced, which would allow frequency
scaling to kick in at lower temp to keep things cool.

Temp climbs up to 90C under full CPU load, because fan never goes to
disengaged mode (~4900 RPM) when set to auto. If I manually set to
disengaged, then temp maxes out at 70C or so.

[Bug 742090] [NEW] index scrolls to wrong line when code is folded

When some python code in the source window is folded (click on - sign to

[Bug 257135] Re: notify-send(1) can't replace an existing notification

2011-01-17 Thread cometdog
@ Sebastien Bacher

I want to disclose up front that I really don't know the details of how
bug importance is assigned, or what it really means for this to be Low
importance.

That said, it does look like you have looked at bug #390508 (I see that
you responded there), which many people have been quite vocal and upset
about. In my opinion fixing this bug (#257135) in notify-send so that
it can replace notifications would solve many people's problems on
#390508. That is, I think it would solve the underlying issue for those
who want to be able to specify a shorter timeout. With that in mind,
would it be reasonable to increase the importance to something higher
than Low? My concern is that if it is rated Low it may never really
get worked on.

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-10-04 Thread cometdog
@ Adam Dingle

Chiming in on the request for an option to strip tags on export. It's
all too easy to tag a bunch of photos with names, locations, etc., and
then export them to who-knows-where without thinking. It would also be
good if it always showed up as a visible option on any export dialogs --
it can really be a serious security and safety concern; and many people
may not even consider where their sensitive personal information is
going if the option is hidden deep in preferences. Additionally, it's a
preference which would generally need to be considered per-export, as
the location to which it is being exported is normally the deciding
factor.

[Bug 455378] Re: Can't resize windows to be displayed on several monitors

2010-09-01 Thread cometdog
@mback - if you still need a workaround
1. install CompizConfig Settings Manager
2. Under the category Window Management, turn on Resize Window
3. Assign your desired keyboard shortcut to the last entry on the Bindings tab,
Initiate Window Resize. I'm using AltF8.
Use the keyboard shortcut followed by mouse movement to resize the window
across multiple screens. This works for me on 9.10; I assume it would be the
same or similar on 10.04.

2010-09-01 Thread cometdog
You're running Ubuntu 10.04 probably, where not only were the icons
removed, but that tab in Appearance Preferences was also removed to make
it harder to get them back. In my opinion Gnome developers made the
wrong decision; I don't think the extra tab made the interface too
cluttered, and the settings were in a sensible place.

In any case, if you want a GUI to add them back in, then install InterfaceTab.

[Bug 548415] Re: Shutdown timer no longer appears

2010-07-25 Thread cometdog
I also liked the timer -- it served a purpose that provided genuine
usability advantages.

Choose shutdown once and then leave. If you realize within 60 sec that
you really wanted to do something else on the computer, you can cancel
the shutdown. This way you don't have to confirm the shutdown if you
don't want to (having to confirm is just irritating -- I just told the
computer to shut down, right?), but it gives you a grace period in case
you forgot something.

The shutdown confirmation dialog does not accomplish this. It is
actually a usability problem. Nobody sees the confirmation dialog and
then sits and tries to figure out whether they really need to do
something else before shutting down. It is just an box that one quickly
gets trained to click on without thinking. And once one is trained to
do so, then it serves absolutely no purpose and would be better if
absent.

There could be a valid reason for this design decision, but the reason stated
by Tim Gould (who changed to won't fix) is not a valid reason.
Basically, if the dialogs come up fast enough
it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to have them count down as
well. People will see and respond to them.
This is invalid because it doesn't indicate an understanding of genuine
usability issues which support the countdown timer on the shutdown / logout
confirmation dialog.

[Bug 532421] Re: Merged menu bar and window border in light themes makes it difficult to grab the right area to move windows

2010-06-15 Thread cometdog
Why is this won't fix for firefox and invalid for openoffice? It's
definitely broken in the default ubuntu 10.04 configuration, and it's a
frustrating UI inconsistency. Firefox and openoffice don't behave like
other applications (nautilus and gedit, for example). Maybe I
misunderstood the upstream bugs, but it sounded like the problem
couldn't be fixed in firefox without changing the firefox code...

[Bug 411174] Re: Hard to switch between windows grouped by an icon

2010-06-04 Thread cometdog
Another possible alternative solution:

Right now I have compiz set to show window previews when I hover over
buttons in the taskbar. This also works in gnome-do, but when there are
multilple windows grouped under the same icon, it only shows one of
them.

Would there be any way to set up gnome do such that it showed previews
of all the grouped windows at once when you hover over the icon? Then
if you could simply mouse up to one of the previews / thumbnails and
click on it to bring that window to the front, it would be excellent. I
think it would address all of the concerns expressed here.

I do think the scrolling feature is very cool; but I've been using
gnome-do for a while and I had no idea it was even there until reading
this just now. The previews would be easily discoverable and very
convenient. And you could keep the existing scrolling functionality.

(Also -- I believe any thinkpad should be configurable to scroll with
the middle button and the trackpoint, or with the touchpad, or both. In
any case this is possible to achieve on Ubuntu. You may have to do a
bit of googling.)

[Bug 306602] Re: [upstream] OOo 3.0 uses comma formula field separators instead of semi-colons

2010-04-30 Thread cometdog
This is also a problem in Karmic as of today. Haven't checked on it in
Lucid yet.

In Karmic, it is not _quite_ as severe. You still can't use Shift+F4 to
cycle relative references when you have commas separating arguments.
But if you change the commas to semicolons and cycle how you want with
Shift+F4, you can hit enter and the formula is accepted by oo.calc; the
semicolons are automatically converted to commas. On the other hand,
the next time you want to edit the formula you have to manually change
all the commas back to semicolons if you want to use Shift+F4 again.

The obvious solution would just be to leave the semicolons alone in the
first place...

[Bug 446394] Re: Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible

2010-02-25 Thread cometdog
I had the PPA fix installed. Network Manager upgrade yesterday broke my
network connectivity completely, both wired and wireless. The versions that
broke it for me were:
network-manager_0.8-0ubuntu4~nmt4~karmic
and
network-manager-gnome_0.8-0ubuntu3~nmt2~karmicl.

Not sure if these came from the PPA or from the main Karmic repository.
No current version from PPA or from Karmic main is working for me.

I was sometimes able to get connected intermittently by doing
sudo dhclient
from the terminal.

I had to downgrade to the rc4 versions that used to be in the PPA (still
had them on my machine in /var/cache/apt/archives). Posting this info
here as it is relevant to those looking for a solution -- PPA above may
no longer help anyone.

Any updates on the possibility of getting a working version in Karmic
main?

[Bug 446394] Re: Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible

2010-01-23 Thread cometdog
@ Tony Espy

This is absolutely a regression and absolutely should be released to the
standard repositories.

RE: Furthermore, the case outlined here is not the typical use case, as
NM should automatically re-connect a hidden network that's been
previously connected.

It may not be the typical use case, whatever that use case is, but it
seriously breaks basic, essential functionality in other use cases, like
mine. Automatically re-connecting to networks is no good unless there
is only one network in range that you have ever used.

I work at a place where the secured intranet is hidden, but there is
also an unsecured visitor network that is visible. With my laptop I
have to reconnect at hourly as I move between meetings (different access
points) and my desk. With this bug, the network manager always connects
to the unsecured visitor network, which is useless to me.

To work around it I had to lock in the Jaunty version of network
manager, which is semi-broken with the Karmic network applet (can't edit
existing network connections), which prevents me from getting security
updates for these packages, and which also downgrades the bluetooth
code.

[Bug 95326] Re: sound juicer aac formatted files skip and...

2007-09-07 Thread cometdog
I have the same problem, AAC audio ripped by sound juicer is skipping.

What information do you lack on this bug? Please let me know and I'll
try to provide some.

Running Feisty Fawn. Originally installed ugly codecs, etc., some stuff
from multiverse, I think.

Sound Juicer appears to rip the AAC file correctly, results in a file on
the disk of reasonable size. Time for the tracks as displayed in
Amarok, or by viewing properties in Nautilus, are much longer than the
original play times (~12 minutes instead of the original 3, for
example). When playing the files they consist of a fraction of a second
of audio, followed by a silent gap, then more audio, more silence, etc.

I looked at the instructions given by Mike above. I had originally
followed some different instructions somewhere for getting the
questionable codecs working, so I looked at the packages I had
installed. I had many things under gstreamer0.10 installed (such as
-ffmpeg, -plugins-good, -plugins-bad, -plugins-ugly, and more), but none
of the gstreamer0.8 packages. Per the instructions above I installed
gstreamer0.8-faac, -mad, -faad for good measure, and all dependencies.
Also installed libfaac0 1.24 and faac 1.24.

The problem still exists -- no discernable difference between AAC
ripping before or after installing the extra packages.
