[Bug 484045] [NEW] kswapd0 at 100% cpu

2009-11-16 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

Package ... unknown, going to guess the linux kernel.

The process kswapd0 takes of 100% of one of my processors. I can't kill
it and have no idea why it starts churning away and never stops. Seems
to happen only after suspending the computer.

See http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1315869 for
another report of similar problem.

[Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-11-15 Thread daemacles
This bug is still present. I used the original fix from over a year ago
(nvidia-xconfig then nvidia-settings). Why so hard to add a prompt to
run nvidia-xconfig to the .deb package when it's installed if there's
not a valid xorg.conf on the system? Hours of frustration here.

What happened instead:

[Bug 482727] [NEW] portmap not started, nfs can't mount on boot

2009-11-14 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

Kubuntu 9.10
upstart 0.6.3-10

Expected:
 System actually boots without intervention

What happened instead:
System doesn't boot because mountall fails. I have to drop to a maintenance
shell, start up portmap, manually mount the NFS share then manually remount /
as rw with
   mount -o remount,rw /
and then drop out of the maintenance shell to continue booting. This happens
every time. If / isn't remounted by hand, mountall continues to fail with some
message about 'waiting for mount'.

Within /etc/init/ the mountall.conf upstart file says it emits local-
filesystems. portmap.conf doesn't start until local-filesystems has
been emitted. However, mountall.conf tries to mount an NFS share
defined in /etc/fstab but can't because portmap hasn't been started yet
because portmap was waiting for mountall to finish. Cyclic problem.

there a configuration file to tell flash which audio system to use?

[Bug 236306] Re: firefox 3.0rc1 hangs

2008-06-01 Thread daemacles
John,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately running with the
-ProfileManager flag doesn't help; firefox hangs at exactly the same
place:

connect(24, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(16001),
sin_addr=inet_addr(127.0.0.1)}, 16

before any windows are created, Profile Manager included. Eventually
after a couple minutes of hanging the 'Choose User Profile' window
appears.

Its as though firefox is waiting for a net connection to localhost which
times-out, then continues loading/processing. That it tries to connect
to localhost, but apparently doesn't need the connection as it works for
a bit until the next time a connection is tried, seems odd. Netstat's
output of the port used is below

netstat -anp |grep -E '16001|Proto'
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
PID/Program name
tcp0 1 192.168.1.5:56330 127.0.0.1:16001 SYN_SENT
455/firefox

I'd add that the problem occurs on my laptop (HP pavilion dv1000) but
not desktop (custom), where firefox 3.0rc1 is working fine.

[Bug 236306] Fixed Re: firefox 3.0rc1 hangs

2008-06-01 Thread daemacles
Apparently at some point during the hardy upgrade the loopback device
auto-start configuration was removed. Adding

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

to /etc/network/interfaces fixes the problem. Noticed same hangs
happened with some other programs like gthumb and totem.

This is a ridiculous thing to happen...hard to track down to boot.

[Bug 236306] [NEW] firefox 3.0rc1 hangs

2008-05-31 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Using Ubuntu 8.04

An upgrade through the update manager of Firefox 3.0b5 to 3.0rc1 on 30
May 2008 causes Firefox to hang while initially loading and also
frequently while browsing for minutes at a time.

Removing all plugins, ~/.mozilla had no effect, nor did removing and
reinstalling firefox. Firefox 2 works fine.

Attached is output from 'strace firefox-3.0', highlight below which
seems to be a stall when trying to contact localhost?? After strace
prints the last line, Firefox hangs for a while then continues, strace
spewing out more output. The same line dealing with sin_addr etc is
always what gets displayed when firefox hangs.

[Bug 222887] Semi-working Re: Hardy VFS Kernel panic during boot, no partitions available

2008-04-27 Thread daemacles
I compiled the vanilla 2.6.25 kernel from kernel.org
(http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.25.tar.bz2) following
instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/forum/software/CustomKernel and system
boots normally.

So somehow this is a problem with 2.6.24? There's discussion with SATA
problems with 2.6.24 at http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/14/263 (and related
thread) but those seem to be a little different than what I'm
experiencing.

[Bug 222887] [NEW] Hardy VFS Kernel panic during boot, no partitions available

2008-04-26 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic

Just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. When trying to boot on the new
2.6.24-16-generic kernel am greeted with:

Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0).

The older 2.6.22-14-generic kernel (post upgrade) boots just fine.

Don't know what information is needed to further troubleshoot this,
please let me know.

GRUB menu.lst entries for the two kernels are identical apart from the
vmlinuz files they reference, which are all present in /boot. I'd add
that hard drives are connected through SATA.

[Bug 116539] glame filter net lock-up

2007-05-23 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glame

When applying a custom filter to a selection (or just using filter-nets
at all afaik), some of the filter components are either unresponsive (as
is the case with 'buffer'), or glame becomes unresponsive and the
process must be killed. I don't know what other information would be
useful for solving this because I just started using glame yesterday, so
please let me know.

Thanks

2007-04-12 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-generic

AMD64 3400+

Installed feisty beta 5 amd64, ISO had 2.6.20.12.

System boots fine.

Upgraded to 2.6.20.14.

System encounters a Machine Check Exception early on during boot,
just after running through sata_nv code and showing ata1.00 stats

[Bug 106079] Re: 2.6.20.14 kernel panic MCE

2007-04-12 Thread daemacles
Its the generic kernel. Bug 106086 is reporting a similar problem
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/106086

I tried the lowlatency kernel also, but no success. Looking through
other bug reports it seems that the 2.6.20-14 kernel is causing much
trouble.

[Bug 96741] libmotif-dev 2.2.3-1.5 missing dependancy libxp-dev

2007-03-26 Thread daemacles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libmotif-dev

On Xubuntu Feisty beta-5 with a few web updates:

Xm/Xm.h provided by LIBMOTIF-DEV depends upon
X11/extensions/Print.h. Print.h is provided by LIBXP-DEV but LIBXP-
DEV is not considered a dependancy for LIBMOTIF-DEV. This of course
causes compiling motif programs to fail.

This is similar to bug #6632 which concerned lesstif.

Also discussed in: http://www.motifzone.org/forum/viewtopic.php?=p=3753

I haven't been able to test if this is an issue on other *ubuntu
releases.
