[Bug 591489] Re: QEMU_AUDIO_DRV set to none by libvirtd in Lucid

2010-06-19 Thread El Diablo
I also am encountering this bug, with all guests. I have looked for many
hours for a resolution but nothing so far. However I can also say ALL
guests:

Windows 7 (32bit)
Windows XP (32bit)
OpenSUSE 11.2 (32bit)

In the log files also show the AUDIO_DRV=none

One additional thing I tried was to add the following like to
/etc/default/libvirt-bin

export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa

But this still did not resolve the issue, still the log files show none.

OK, I have sound working. I manually launched the Windows 7 guest via
command line, but changing the none to pa and I had audio. So now I will
investigate as to how to ensure than libvirt respects the env. var.

[Bug 591489] Re: QEMU_AUDIO_DRV set to none by libvirtd in Lucid

2010-06-19 Thread El Diablo
I also am encountering this bug, with all guests. I have looked for many
hours for a resolution but nothing so far. However I can also say ALL
guests:

Windows 7 (32bit)
Windows XP (32bit)
OpenSUSE 11.2 (32bit)

In the log files also show the AUDIO_DRV=none

One additional thing I tried was to add the following like to
/etc/default/libvirt-bin

export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa

But this still did not resolve the issue, still the log files show none.

[Bug 68440] Re: X does not work in Xen, causes crash

2008-07-03 Thread El Diablo
Ok, I'm no Xen guy... however after experiencing a load of lock up's
when booting the 8.04 Xen kernel (64bit) , destroying my fs by powering
down by holding the button... I found this lame fix:

Now I can't speculate as to what is wrong, and I'm not going to...
however try this (It also worked for ilowe in #ubuntu):

edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and force xorg to use Vesa driver
reboot, at grub select your xen kernel... all being well, GDM should
start

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver vesa
EndSection

Hope it helps (until somebody fixes the damn linux-xen kernels)...

FYI: If you have an nvidia card, change the line to

Driver nv

[Bug 173495] gfxboot NOT PATCHED to support KVM guest boot in Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 1

2007-12-02 Thread El Diablo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gfxboot

Here I go AGAIN :-)

This applies to previous comments I logged with regard to 7.10

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gfxboot/+bug/140713

This is patchable so PLEASE PLEASE let's get this upstream. It missed
out (just!) being on 7.10.

KVM is one superb VM, and it is frustrating to have to modify the
original ISO just to have a working KVM guest ISO.

The easiest method I've got is the following: (This should I believe
also apply to any other guest distros that have the same issue)

1) Install ISO Master http://littlesvr.ca/isomaster/index.php

2) Open your Ubuntu ISO image in ISO Master

3) EDIT the file in /isolinux/isolinux.cfg

4) REMOVE the two lines refering to gfxboot

Example in 8.04 Alpha 1
---

GFXBOOT bootlogo
GFXBOOT-BACKGROUND 0xB6875A

5) SAVE your modified ISO image under a new name

6) Boot your new ISO in your kvm host.

7) Enjoy

Now, ladies, gentlemen and devils Hello, this to me is high
priority when it comes to Ubuntu Server...

[Bug 140713] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install

2007-11-20 Thread El Diablo
Ok, don't flame me for repeating myself here, but flagging this as
Medium is wrong in my view. Wrong for the following reasons:

1) It's easy and quick to patch, and (to me and others) SHOULD have been
done prior to the release of 7.10

2) I work as a systems administrator, and use as much as possible Ubuntu
Server (generally LTS, but on occasions latest release), and we are
about to any day now put into productions a suite of virtual servers
using KVM. The installation of guest RHEL5/CentOS5 works in KVM (53),
but Ubuntu Server... no, I have to remaster the ISO to remove the
gfxboot, ok no major issue, but it should not be like that, it SHOULD
boot.

3) As I assume most KVM end-users will be geeks and admins, it's
annoying to people to find that booting your guest Ubuntu is a no-go

I'm hoping that this get cleared up ASAP, it's been reported, it's been
patched, it's been acknowledged , ... erm, PLEASE lets get it sorted.

I'm also toying with the idea of writing a GUI (Mono GTK#) and / or
console app to remaster any given Ubuntu CD/DVD iso to a KVM friendly
bootable ISO...

Sorry for ranting :P

[Bug 140713] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install

2007-10-01 Thread El Diablo
Ok, some interesting info, and a fix / work around.

To install a guest (Tested this with Ubuntu Gutsy Beta), remaster the
ISO with the bootlogo file removed. At the boot line, use vga mode, eg:

install vga=791

Your guest installation will install fast, and perfectly.

Anthony has written a small C application to remaster an ISO with the
bootlogo file removed, I expect he will release the code shortly.

The second option , that I have not fully tested, is to tell KVM/QEMU to
boot the kernel and initrd directly off the CD/ISO, this therefore by-
passes the gfxboot completly and goes straight to installation. I will
attempt to finish testing this out, and with other guest distros if
possible, this evening.

[Bug 140713] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install

2007-09-24 Thread El Diablo
Hi TJ,

I have no problem booting installed guests (Gutsy, XP, Vista = 100%)
when running KVM (kvm-44), from what I hear you saying, you can't boot
an installed Gutsy guest... if so, that's odd, however I am running
32-Bit host and guests.

Hopefully this gfxboot issue will be resolved, as personally I think it
is very important, especially when it comes to Ubuntu Server
installations! (anyone agree with me on this?). We use Ubuntu server
widely (6.06LTS mainly), and I am keen to push KVM usage in our company,
the idea of waiting hours does not appeal to me to install, but worst
case schenario will be extracting a qcow2 image of a working base
installation guest.

For my testing here at home, I made some modifications to my guest
structure.

I have got in the host a 500gb SATA-II (/dev/sdb). I only have one shell
script to boot the guest:

/usr/local/bin/kvm contains

#!/bin/bash
/usr/local/kvm-44/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -soundhw all -localtime -m 1024 -hda
/dev/sdb

I also have in my /etc/rc.local

echo 1024 /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq /dev/null
chmod o+rw /dev/sdb /dev/null

I find having a dedicated drive much easier to manage my guests, and
improves preformance. All the partitions can be mounted in my host, etc,
etc.

Sorry the above is off topic, but maybe a useful bit of info for some.

Regards

[Bug 140713] Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install

2007-09-18 Thread El Diablo
Public bug reported:

When attempting to install Gutsy as a KVM guest, you are unable to do so
unless disabling KVM support in qemu.

This causes the installation to preform VERY slowly indeed, however,
once installed and booted, Gutsy preforms very well indeed.

My system:

Ubuntu 7.04 (Running custom Core2 kernel 2.6.22.6)
KVM-40 (Compiled from latest tarballs)
Intel E6600 Quad

I do not have a lot of information as to the cause, however the
following may or may not be fully correct: (This is information I have
attempted to understand from #kvm)

That this problem (may) only show when using kvm-intel (due to sw
emulation (needs confirmation)), but not on kvm-amd

That this problem does not happen when installing SLEx10 guests
(according to someone on irc) (I will attempt to test this tonight)

Any more information anyone can add to this?

[Bug 106843] Re: No sound - ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia (Fixable!)

2007-04-19 Thread El Diablo
I can confirm that worked... just rebuilt the modules and sound works
correctly.

For anyone wanting to do the same do the following:

Install linux-source:

sudo aptitude install linux-source

Make a directory where you can use to extract the source:

mkdir ~/xyz

cd ~/xyz

Exact the source to that directory: (Check the version of the tarball
prior to this)

tar jxvf /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.20.tar.bz2

Enter the root of the kernel source:

cd linux-source-2.6.20

Copy the config file to the source tree:

cp /boot/config-2.6.20-15-generic .config

make menuconfig (When you get the menu, just exit)

Enter the directory where the intel driver source code is:

cd linux-source-2.6.20/sound/pci/hda/

Now find the line number to edit, and or check if it needs modified:

grep -n '#define AZX_MAX_CODECS' hda_intel.c

You should see an output simiar or the same as:

201:#define AZX_MAX_CODECS 3

Now edit the hda_intel.c file with your favorite text editor, and change
the 3 to 4, and save the file.

Build the new modules:

make -C ~/xyz/linux-source-2.6.20/ M=$PWD modules

You will have two files:

snd-hda-codec.ko
snd-hda-intel.ko

Now copy those to the kernel modules with:

sudo cp snd-hda-*.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/.

Reboot...

You should have sound.. (You mixers will be muted tho, so unmute them)

[Bug 106843] Re: No sound - ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia (Fixable!)

2007-04-18 Thread El Diablo
I have not had the chance to do the above tests...

I've just downloaded the RC of Kubuntu, and will try a fresh install,
but I imagine it will do the same. If so, I will be forced to compile
2.6.20.7 from Kernel.org again.

Shame I filed the bug report after the kernel freeze eh :-((

[Bug 106843] No sound - ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia (Fixable!)

2007-04-15 Thread El Diablo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic

Laptop: Samsung R20 (Spanish)

Sound Card: ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia

Problem: No Sound. Only detects the modem

Tests: Re-installation of ALSA. Compilation of ALSA from latest source
tar balls. Assistance from #alsa ... nothing worked...

Fix: I compiled from kernel.org 2.6.20.7 using the .config from
Kubuntu's 2.6.20-15 configuration file. I made no alterations. When
booting to the self compiled kernel, the sound works correctly, and
mixers etc are available.
