Re: [Bug 848622] Re: X.Org ABI Bump will break virtualbox-guest-X11
I agree you are entirely right on principle; I thought the appearance of xserver 1.11 in PPAs presaged its appearance in Oneiric, but you set me straight on that. There would be no sense having packages in the same repository break one another. Anyone's Oneiric which failed to boot after an apt-get dist-upgrade (which is probably everybody's Oneiric, at least the Alphas) would attest to the wisdom of that. What I did instead is to install two packages from Debian Sid, _*virtualbox-guest-x11_4.1.2-dfsg-1+b1*/**/_, which survives the ABI bump quite nicely (and, only because they are twins) *_/virtualbox-guest-utils_4.1.2-dfsg-1+b1/_.* Although I hate to install Debian packages on Ubuntu, or vise versa, I sometimes feel I have no choice. I don't think xorg-edgers particularly wants to become a VirtualBox PPA. My HID mouse still works; that's all I can say. I'm sorry if you're more accustomed to conversing with people who actually know what they're talking about, but I'm a relative newcomer, and I only get to play around in virtual sandboxes for the hour or so a day I have to myself. [Bug 848622] [NEW] X.Org ABI Bump will break virtualbox-guest-X11
Public bug reported: I'm sure this comes as no news, but the dependency on xorg-video-abi-10 and xorg-input-abi-12 will be bad news if and when xserver 1.11 oozes out of its present cage in X.Org Edgers and into Oneiric repositories. Forgive me if this is entirely misdirected. Maybe Robert or Cyril should, or will, provide a version of virtualbox-guest-x11 based on Debian Experimental, which does survive the ABI bump, and will thus not croak the VM. But they do not seem so inclined if they tossed out xserver-xorg-video-vmware from video-all because it fails to build against xserver 1.11 on amd64. root@ubuntu:~# lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch) Release:11.10 root@ubuntu:~# apt-cache policy virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-x11: Installed: 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1 Candidate: 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1 0 800 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: virtualbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/848622 Title: X.Org ABI Bump will break virtualbox-guest-X11 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/848622/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 839166] Re: mountall hangs while trying to send dbus? messages for /proc
Anecdotally, updating mountall from 2.25ubuntu1 (natty) to 2.31 (oneiric) is what appears to croak my system (which is virtualized). The system hangs at mountall on the next cold boot. I thought it was either base-files or initscripts, but since upgrading either one of these takes mountall with it, my uninformed opinion is that something is fishy with mountall. My issue is perhaps a little different. I do not have this issue with the version you are reporting (2.25). While I might still have a valid bug (inability to build kernel modules from source is a real problem, especially for things like VMware Tools, in all post-BKL kernels), I've given up completely on Ubuntu virtual kernels for precisely the application for which they were expressly designed. For VMware Ubuntu guests, the sound drivers are missing. For VirtualBox linux guests, the generic drm modules are missing. Moving to generic kernels moot both issues. [Bug 811385] Re: reboot hangs at Plymouth logo after upgrading base-files and initscripts
My report appears to be invalid. My Plymouth hadn't been updated to take the /run transition into account, even if initramfs had been. At least that's the conclusion I draw. After reverting to a stable baseline, updating Plymouth, then updating base-files and initscripts, everything worked, even after a cold boot. My apologies. Thank you gentlemen for looking into this. I do not have your skills, so while I suspect something is still wrong somewhere, it's difficult to isolate in a way that would be useful to you. On one virtualized system, Plymouth boots to a black screen, which I'm willing to overlook since the login screen eventually appears. On another virtualization platform, otherwise the same, Plymouth splash works, but hangs if I put the last nail in its coffin (by updating initscripts and base-files). [Bug 807974] Re: debootstrap fails to install libc6 installing oneiric from natty
Excuse me if it is inappropriate to say this here, but a seemingly related series of breaking changes still persists. First, X lost all input devices. Then, there was a hang on boot. The Plymouth logo stopped spinning and the system just croaked; the login screen never appeared. The latest breaking change occurred while upgrading *one* package only (base-files) to 6.4ubuntu2. Supposedly that was expressly intended to fix other devastating bugs. After that, I gave up and reverted to a stable snapshot. I'm all for stealing from Debian Unstable, but when this is done in a piecemeal and uncoordinated manner, and Oneiric is orders of magnitude more unstable than Sid, something is wrong. Really, this is getting to be too much. I'm not talking about an ugly screen or a few missing icons. We are approaching total unusability. Nate, I believe you are on the right track. I know this is not the type of feedback you need (or want) in this venue. After all, my virtual platform is Debian Sid, not Oneiric; and my kernel is 2.6.39-2, not 3.0-rcx. But the underlying problems seem to be from the same causes. And I know all the dire warnings about installing Ubuntu binaries on Debian, or the reverse. Nate, your efforts are much appreciated and I'll be following them with great interest. While I still use the proprietary VMWare Tools [8.4.6 Build 385536] on my Ubuntu 11.04 guest [kernel 2.6.39-3], they seem to be quite broken on Debian Sid [kernel 2.6.39-1]. I was quite sure they would still build on the rc7 kernel for which Debian Unstable obliged me to create my own kbuild infrastructure (quite educational for a novice). Since the Debian version, even in Unstable, is quite ancient [8.4.2-261024-1], I am becoming quite desperate. Desperate enough to perhaps install an Ubuntu package on Debian ;-) Cheers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to open-vm-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/776103 Title: package open-vm-dkms 2011.03.28-387002-0ubuntu2 fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/776103/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 795815] [NEW] No sound in 11.04 with 2.6.39-3 kernel; alsa-source build fails
Thanks for the suggestion, Daniel. On those few occasions when I am really desperate to hear sound, I fall back to the 2.6.38-10-generic kernel (2.6.38-10-virtual has no sound either). In fact, there has really been no sound since Maverick. I believe that's because I've installed the 'linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38-10-generic' package from 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu'. The PPA has server and generic branches for 2.6.38-10, as well as 2.6.38-9, but not for virtual, and nothing for 2.6.39. # uname -r 2.6.38-10-generic # modprobe snd_ens1371 # hwinfo --sound 52: PCI 201.0: 0401 Multimedia audio controller [Created at pci.318] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_1274_1371 Unique ID: GA8e.FGsk7T8RAT9 Parent ID: 7EWs.3XzZP_1GzlF SysFS ID: /devices/pci:00/:00:11.0/:02:01.0 SysFS BusID: :02:01.0 Hardware Class: sound Model: Ensoniq Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI64V, AudioPCI128 Vendor: pci 0x1274 Ensoniq Device: pci 0x1371 ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] SubVendor: pci 0x1274 Ensoniq SubDevice: pci 0x1371 Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI64V, AudioPCI128 Revision: 0x02 Driver: ENS1371 Driver Modules: snd_ens1371 I/O Ports: 0x2000-0x3fff (rw) IRQ: 19 (no events) Module Alias: pci:v1274d1371sv1274sd1371bc04sc01i00 Driver Info #0: Driver Status: snd_ens1371 is active Driver Activation Cmd: modprobe snd_ens1371 Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #18 (PCI bridge) # aplay -l List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices card 0: AudioPCI [Ensoniq AudioPCI], device 0: ES1371/1 [ES1371 DAC2/ADC] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: AudioPCI [Ensoniq AudioPCI], device 1: ES1371/2 [ES1371 DAC1] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 I do believe I've seen enough to conclude the problem is not with hardware virtualization per se, and since I'm unable to build from source, I'm prepared to wait.
