Re: [Bug 848622] Re: X.Org ABI Bump will break virtualbox-guest-X11

2011-09-13 Thread dj_palindrome
I agree you are entirely right on principle; I thought the appearance of
xserver 1.11 in PPAs presaged its appearance in Oneiric, but you set me
straight on that. There would be no sense having packages in the same
repository break one another. Anyone's Oneiric which failed to boot
after an apt-get dist-upgrade (which is probably everybody's Oneiric, at
least the Alphas) would attest to the wisdom of that.

What I did instead is to install two packages from Debian Sid,
_*virtualbox-guest-x11_4.1.2-dfsg-1+b1*/**/_, which survives the ABI
bump quite nicely (and, only because they are twins)
*_/virtualbox-guest-utils_4.1.2-dfsg-1+b1/_.* Although I hate to install
Debian packages on Ubuntu, or vise versa, I sometimes feel I have no
choice. I don't think xorg-edgers particularly wants to become a
VirtualBox PPA.

My HID mouse still works; that's all I can say. I'm sorry if you're more
accustomed to conversing with people who actually know what they're
talking about, but I'm a relative newcomer, and I only get to play
around in virtual sandboxes for the hour or so a day I have to myself.

Looks like the mouse driver is indeed broken with xserver 1.11 (you could
have at least included a link to the upstream bug report).
Still, I fail to see the point of this bug report since Ubuntu doesn't use
that version for the next release and we are not doing upstream development.

[Bug 848622] [NEW] X.Org ABI Bump will break virtualbox-guest-X11

2011-09-12 Thread dj_palindrome
Public bug reported:

I'm sure this comes as no news, but the dependency on xorg-video-abi-10
and xorg-input-abi-12 will be bad news if and when xserver 1.11 oozes
out of its present cage in X.Org Edgers and into Oneiric repositories.

Forgive me if this is entirely misdirected. Maybe Robert or Cyril
should, or will, provide a version of virtualbox-guest-x11 based on
Debian Experimental, which does survive the ABI bump, and will thus not
croak the VM. But they do not seem so inclined if they tossed out
xserver-xorg-video-vmware from video-all because it fails to build
against xserver 1.11 on amd64.

[Bug 839166] Re: mountall hangs while trying to send dbus? messages for /proc

2011-09-11 Thread dj_palindrome
Anecdotally, updating mountall from 2.25ubuntu1 (natty) to 2.31
(oneiric) is what appears to croak my system (which is virtualized). The
system hangs at mountall on the next cold boot.

I thought it was either base-files or initscripts, but since upgrading
either one of these takes mountall with it, my uninformed opinion is
that something is fishy with mountall.

My issue is perhaps a little different. I do not have this issue with
the version you are reporting (2.25). It does exist with 2.31.

I'm not complaining, since I'm not one of your developers, and therefore
do not have to eat your dog food unless I choose to.

Sorry, that's unrelated to any of the above changes and no one else is
reporting such a problem. The more likely culprit here would be some kind
of disk corruption or hardware failure.

How odd, when the hardware in question is completely virtualized, and,
whenever it did occur, it would occur simultaneously in two parallel,
but physically distinct and independent virtualization environments,
both of which emulate completely different hardware, and use distinct
virtual-disk formats.

In fairness, though, this has not happened in quite a while now. I'm
only reminded because it surface for me again today, although the system
was nice enough to recover itself gracefully (on previous occasions,
dpkg --configure -a sufficed):

[Bug 795815] Re: No sound in 11.04 with 2.6.39-3 kernel; alsa-source build fails

2011-08-06 Thread dj_palindrome
While I might still have a valid bug (inability to build kernel modules
from source is a real problem, especially for things like VMware Tools,
in all post-BKL kernels), I've given up completely on Ubuntu virtual
kernels for precisely the application for which they were expressly
designed. For VMware Ubuntu guests, the sound drivers are missing. For
VirtualBox linux guests, the generic drm modules are missing. Moving to
generic kernels moot both issues. I now have sound and direct-rendering
in their respective environments.

[Bug 811385] Re: reboot hangs at Plymouth logo after upgrading base-files and initscripts

2011-07-18 Thread dj_palindrome
My report appears to be invalid. My Plymouth hadn't been updated to take
the /run transition into account, even if initramfs had been. At least
that's the conclusion I draw. After reverting to a stable baseline,
updating Plymouth, then updating base-files and initscripts, everything
worked, even after a cold boot.

My apologies. Even if the updates really did make their appearance at
the same time, it became increasingly difficult to keep track of which
package triggered any given consequence.

[Bug 812022] Re: plymouth regression: text missing in initramfs (again)

2011-07-18 Thread dj_palindrome
Thank you gentlemen for looking into this. I do not have your skills, so
while I suspect something is still wrong somewhere, it's difficult to
isolate in a way that would be useful to you. On one virtualized system,
Plymouth boots to a black screen, which I'm willing to overlook since
the login screen eventually appears. On another virtualization platform,
otherwise the same, Plymouth splash works, but hangs if I put the last
nail in its coffin (by updating initscripts and base-files). As soon as
I'm convinced I'm good again, the logo stops spinning and croaks.
Obviously this would be useless as a bug report so I don't file one. But
I'm very glad individuals of your talent are looking into this.

[Bug 807974] Re: debootstrap fails to install libc6 installing oneiric from natty

2011-07-15 Thread dj_palindrome
Excuse me if it is inappropriate to say this here, but a seemingly
related series of breaking changes still persists. First, X lost all
input devices. Then, there was a hang on boot. The Plymouth logo stopped
spinning and the system just croaked; the login screen never appeared.
The latest breaking change occurred while upgrading *one* package only
(base-files) to 6.4ubuntu2. Supposedly that was expressly intended to
fix other devastating bugs. After that, I gave up and reverted to a
stable snapshot.

I'm all for stealing from Debian Unstable, but when this is done in a
piecemeal and uncoordinated manner, and Oneiric is orders of magnitude
more unstable than Sid, something is wrong. Really, this is getting to
be too much. I'm not talking about an ugly screen or a few missing
icons. We are approaching total unusability. More often than not, dpkg
receives a segfault during routine upgrades.

[Bug 811385] [NEW] reboot hangs at Plymouth logo after upgrading base-files and initscripts

2011-07-15 Thread dj_palindrome
Public bug reported:

Please excuse me if I am reporting against the wrong package, or even if
this report is invalid altogether, but I was told in no uncertain terms
that today's update of initramfs-tools resolved this issue. It does
not. I survived the botched, uncoordinated migration to /run, and tried
to avoid upgrading all packages at once. I had the current versions of
udev and initramfs under my belt before attempting the following:

initscripts: 2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu4
base-files: 6.4ubuntu2

A warm reboot of the (virtual) machine seems OK, but a cold restart
hangs at the Plymouth logo. Eventually, Plymouth stops spinning and the
login screen never appears. Recovery mode of the same kernel version
(3.0.0-5-virtual) still works.

Thanks in advance for putting up with the observations of a clueless
outsider ;-)

* The transitional-package approach, which I think is what you used for
open-vm-toolbox in ppa15, worked nicely.

* The conflicting-package approach, which I think is what you are using
for open-vm-toolbox in ppa19, achieves the same result, although with
benign errors that can be ignored. This is probably just due to the way
I had to install (using dpkg rather than apt or Synaptic).

* The most important thing, that DKMS actually works, has been true
since the earliest ppa's and continues. GOD BLESS YOU!!

* Anything I said about initialization scripts or mounting is completely
inappropriate and beyond the scope of this bug report and its
resolution. I just didn't know who else would be listening to me ;-)

* I couldn't agree more that it is confusing to read documentation about
vmmemctl and vmware-user that even *I* suspect are just no longer true.
But I think the point about DnD is still valid because I've played with
it. In other words, the observations are uninformed by knowledge, but
empirical. I still suspect something is rotten in Denmark because a
force-reload of my modified open-vm-tools script frequently fails
(mount: mount point /proc/fs/vmblock/mountPoint does not exist). Loading
vmblock is *supposed* to create /proc/fs/vmblock (it does) and two nodes
therein (dev and mountPoint). The former it always does; the latter, not
always.

Nate, I wish I was more than a newcomer; I'd gladly help you, since I am
getting obsessed to an unhealthy and unnatural degree with making VMware
work from am end-user perspective. I realize this is sick ;-)

If I weren't so frustrated that the Debian package maintainers seem to
be indifferent, absent, clueless, or just paralyzed, I wouldn't have
reached out to my Ubuntu brothers. Debian has had grave bug reports for
at least four months on their totally obsolete, supposedly latest
version of Tools and hasn't even classified any of them. Much less
uploaded a new package to unstable or experimental.

So I was reaching out to you in desperation; I had you pegged as someone
actively working to get a solution I could steal.

So while I'm sorry for treading on your ppa, I *have* successfully
installed ppa9 in a semi-Oneiric Natty (basically a 3.0.1 kernel with
as much of the internals and build infrasturucture upgraded as I can
without breaking my desktop, which is fragile because, of course, VMware
doesn't support direct-rendering in linux guests). DMKS built all
modules without any problems whatsoever.

I would like only to observe that distro package maintainers have to
look thought the eyes of the recipient to ensure that end-users will
have a good experience. This is what I mean:

* Even if shared folders are always enabled in the host, the guest will
not auto-mount them. Timing issues in loading the necessary modules
makes using fstab problematic.

* Drag and Drop operations from the *host* to *guest* will fail because
the open-vm-tools initialization does not seem to provide the necessary
environment, and once created, that environment is volatile, since
VMwareDnD has to be created in \tmp.

After doing some reading, I've modified the startup section of my
/etc/init.d/open-vm-tools as follows (I make no claim about knowing what
I'm doing, or that it is sufficiently general):

Nate, I believe you are on the right track.

I know this is not the type of feedback you need (or want) in this
venue. After all, my virtual platform is Debian Sid, not Oneiric; and my
kernel is 2.6.39-2, not 3.0-rcx. But the underlying problems seem to
be from the same causes.

And I know all the dire warnings about installing Ubuntu binaries on
Debian, or the reverse. But one of the reasons I virtualize non-
production environments is so that I *can* screw them up ;-)

But the great news is that DKMS *finally* doesn't croak:

Nate, your efforts are much appreciated and I'll be following them with
great interest. While I still use the proprietary VMWare Tools [8.4.6
Build 385536] on my Ubuntu 11.04 guest [kernel 2.6.39-3], they seem to
be quite broken on Debian Sid [kernel 2.6.39-1].

I was quite sure they would still build on the rc7 kernel for which
Debian Unstable obliged me to create my own kbuild infrastructure (quite
educational for a novice).

Since the Debian version, even in Unstable, is quite ancient
[8.4.2-261024-1], I am becoming quite desperate.

Desperate enough to perhaps install an Ubuntu package on Debian ;-)

Cheers.

Re: [Bug 795815] [NEW] No sound in 11.04 with 2.6.39-3 kernel; alsa-source build fails

2011-06-11 Thread dj_palindrome
Thanks for the suggestion, Daniel.

On those few occasions when I am really desperate to hear sound, I fall
back to the 2.6.38-10-generic kernel (2.6.38-10-virtual has no sound
either).

In fact, there has really been no sound since Maverick.

I believe that's because I've installed the
'linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38-10-generic' package from
'http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu'. The PPA has
server and generic branches for 2.6.38-10, as well as 2.6.38-9, but not
for virtual, and nothing for 2.6.39.

I do believe I've seen enough to conclude the problem is not with
hardware virtualization per se, and since I'm unable to build from
source, I'm prepared to wait.
