[Bug 1384062] Re: os-prober kills ceph OSD

2016-02-16 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
I can reproduce this on Wily with

# apt-cache policy ceph
ceph:
  Installed: 0.94.5-0ubuntu0.15.10.1
  Candidate: 0.94.5-0ubuntu0.15.10.1
  Version table:

Packages

 0.94.3-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://eu.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ wily/main amd64 Packages

when I configure two OSDs both with their journal partition on a third
disk. Running os-prober makes the second OSD fail with

 0> 2016-02-16 15:15:17.604773 7fe2c7ec8700 -1 os/FileJournal.cc: In
function 'void FileJournal::write_finish_thread_entry()' thread 7fe2c7ec8700

NOTE: a copy of the executable, or `objdump -rdS ` is needed to

which seems to indicate that os-prober is doing unsafe things to the
journal partitions.

[Bug 1098314] Re: pg_num inappropriately low on new pools

2016-02-16 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
You can set "osd pool default pg num" and "osd pool default pgp num" to
some higher value in your ceph.conf before creating pools if you want
some higher values than the default and do not want to specify it on the
command line every time.

For more complex setups however, you want to match the pg count specific
to your pool requirements anyway, so the usefulness of this approach is
limited. Rather use a tool like

http://ceph.com/pgcalc/

to tune your cluster to your requirements.

Finally, you can increase the pg count for existing pools without having
to remove them, but you cannot decrease it again afterwards, so starting
up with a small default certainly is better than having a default too
large for a single OSD test setup.

[Bug 1505224] Re: Ceph OSDs not started after reboot

2016-02-16 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Sorry for the delay, I must admin that I'm not sure about that anymore.
I tried reproducing this issue with a current installation of Wily, but
failed. So I guess we can assume this to be invalid now.

[Bug 1545237] [NEW] Sync denemo 2.0.2-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2016-02-12 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer
Public bug reported:

Please sync denemo 2.0.2-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Merge from Debian unstable. Remaining changes:
- debian/patches/missing-includes: add missing includes as detected by
  the buildd.
  * The buildd detected some missing includes (implicit declarations) - fix
those.

All missing includes detected by the buildd have been fixed upstream.
The patch can be dropped, the version from Debian could be used
directly.

Thanks.

Changelog entries since current xenial version 2.0.0-0.1ubuntu1:

denemo (2.0.2-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Imported Upstream version 2.0.2
  * Set myself as maintainer with consent from Josue

  * Update Vcs-* URLs
  * Remove patches which have been applied upstream
  * Refresh other patches
  * Update d/copyright
  * Correctly remove obsolete conffile
  * Update d/watch

is an alternative for Cinnamon users:

[Bug 1521613] Re: Default route not installed but received in dhcp offer

This is the expected behaviour if your DHCP server also specifies a
classless static route, see RFC 3442:

If the DHCP server returns both a Classless Static Routes option and a
Router option, the DHCP client MUST ignore the Router option.

This only happen if the package from trusty-updates is installed before
adding the cloud PPA. If libvirt-bin is not installed, the installation
of the new package works fine.

Expected result: The upgrade of libvirt-bin should work without an
error.

Steps to reproduce:
$ apt-get install libvirt-bin
$ echo "http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/
trusty-updates/liberty/main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/os.list
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install libvirt-bin

[Bug 1398999] Re: Block migrate with attached volumes copies volumes to themselves

2015-09-18 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
I think there is some confusion here. As I understand it, the part that
was fixed in libvirt was changing the API so that now it is possible to
define a subset of block devices to be copied during migration. Now to
fix the original issue, another patch in nova will be needed, that uses
this extended API to avoid copying shared block devices to itself.

[Bug 1488962] [NEW] systemd does not notice when apache2 service fails

2015-08-26 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Public bug reported:

The systemd service generated from /etc/init.d/apache2 via systemd-sysv-
generator contains the line

RemainAfterExit=yes

causing systemd to ignore crashes of the service. In order to reproduce
this, add a non-existing address to /etc/apache2/ports.conf, which will
cause the apache2 service to fail.

However, systemctl status apache2 will still show active(exited),
e.g. will not recognize the service as failed. In particular, systemctl
is-failed apache2 will still return active instead of failed.

Expected result: systemctl is-failed apache2 should return failed,
so that monitoring script can detect the error.

The solution would probably be to include a proper native systemd
service definition instead of using the converted sysv service.

[Bug 1488954] [NEW] systemctl is-active udev returns unknown

2015-08-26 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Public bug reported:

There is a symlink in /lib/systemd/system from udev.service to systemd-
udevd.service, however, running systemctl is-active udev returns
unknown instead of active initially. This can be solved by running
systemctl status udev once, but for monitoring the service it would be
nicer if the is-active would be working out of the box.

[Bug 1473602] [NEW] Elantech touchpad not detected after few days in ubuntu 14.04.2 in acer aspire one d255e

2015-07-10 Thread Dr Anirban Mitra
Public bug reported:

I am reporting this manually as ubuntu-bug reports all packages as Not an
ubuntu package . Moreover I have very poor connectivity at home where I use
the ubuntu laptop so that i can not even use apt-get to install packages.
This problem started with 13.10 then with 14.04LTS and now I am using 14.04.2
with kernel 3.16. My touchpad works initially for few days but after that it is
not detectable so that i have to use an external usb mouse. As per solution
given in askubuntu.com when I boot with i8042.nopnp as a boot option, it is
detected and works fine with all multitouch functions.
I have tested with mainline kernel 4.1.1-040101 from kernel-ppa and found that
the problem persists.

2015-07-06 Thread Dr Anirban Mitra
Sorry for the typo. I meant the new mainline kernel is successfull in
detecting the touchpad only if Single is given as a boot time parameter.
Once detected, it remains detectable even by the 3.16 ubuntu kernel on
reboot. But if I power off, it becomes not detectable again. I know I
should file a fresh bug, but my laptop is offline, and i need to collect
necessary log files to file a bug.

2015-07-06 Thread Dr Anirban Mitra
I had a similar problem with my acer aspire one. Downloading and
installing the latest manline kernel 4.1.1 did not help in detection.
Then I found that newer kernel if Single is added as a boot parameter.
Once it is detected the stock ubuntu kernel 3.16 also detected the
touchpad on direct reboot. However on shutting down the laptop, the
touchpad is not detected again. Hope this helps.

corrected in later realseses of Ubuntu.
Thank you all for all the help.

 Title:
USB attached keyboard and mouse don't work at the login time to Ubuntu

 Bug description:
After the update to kernel 3.13.0-51-generic from kernel 3.13.0-45
generic, in Trusty Tahr 64 bit, USB devices don't work at login time.
The login screen comes up but one cannot login because both the
keyboard and the mouse are USB attached devices, and are not working.

I was able to login and use the computer by using the advanced mode in
Grub and then reverting to kernel 3.13.0-45 generic.
I could also login if I used the advanced mode and then loged in to the
recovery mode of kernel 3.13.0-51 and just selected the resume entry in
   the offered menu.

[Bug 1450989] Re: USB attached keyboard and mouse don't work at the login time to Ubuntu Trusty Tahr 64 bit

2015-06-09 Thread Dr JD Wallach
Hi,
A workaround for this bug is:
Start the machine from scratch with all the USB devices plugged in.
Wait for the Grub menu to show on the screen.
Using the keyboard select Ubuntu as the operating system to load.
Right after selecting the Ubuntu OS, disconnect the USB mouse (be it direct USB
plug-in or remote).
When the Ubuntu login screen comes up it will be possible to use the keyboard
to enter the user-name and the password.
Once the Ubuntu environment is established, reconnect the USB mouse., and use
it normally.
Problem solved, although a bit annoying.
Hope this helps.

[Bug 1448533] Re: Packaging bug prevents install of PXC 5.6

2015-05-12 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
I think there is still something wrong with the packaging here, I get:

~# apt-get install percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6/proposed-updates
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6-dbg' for regex
'percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6'
E: Release 'proposed-updates' for 'percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6-dbg' was not found

and the package percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6 itself seems to be missing.

[Bug 1450989] Re: USB attached keyboard and mouse don't work at the login time to Ubuntu Trusty Tahr 64 bit

2015-05-08 Thread Dr JD Wallach
As per your instructions the
linux-headers-4.1.0-040100rc2-generic_4.1.0-040100rc2.201505032335_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.1.0-040100rc2-generic_4.1.0-040100rc2.201505032335_amd64.deb
linux-headers-4.1.0-040100rc2_4.1.0-040100rc2.201505032335_all.deb
were downloaded and installed in the Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit operating system that
run inside the Dell 3847 computer..
At first the installation ended with errors, but after un-installing Oracle
corporation’s Virtual Box and re installing the above kernel headers and image
the installation ended successfully.
When the computer was started from scratch and the advanced Grub menu was
selected, it showed the newly installed kernel as a one of the possibilities
for booting the computer.
Once the newly installed kernel was selected for booting the computer, it was
possible to login into the Ubuntu operating system as both the mouse and the
keyboard were now operable.
It should be said, however, that the resulting Ubuntu operating system
environment was very unstable, but that was not the point of the test.
So now what is next?

[Bug 1447807] Re: systemctl enable fails to enable a SysV service

2015-05-06 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Thanks for the fast fix, is there already a package built from the patch
somewhere that I could test?

Also you might want to amend the title of the bug, as enabling the
service is in fact performed properly, systemctl just throws an error in
the end when it should simply terminate successfully instead.

[Bug 1451797] Re: rc.local should require network-online.target

2015-05-05 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
While I agree that this may never have been guaranteed, it has been
working with all previous init systems. For me, the implied policy of
using rc.local is: Run after all other init stuff has finished.

For example, https://github.com/puppetlabs/razor-server uses modifying
rc.local in order to trigger some post installation actions to happen
once the node has rebooted after being installed. This works pretty well
with Precise and Trusty and also seems to be fine with most other
distros.

Also, having a server with no network connectivity ever will also not be
very useful. This is certainly different for desktop systems, but then,
why would you have the

After=network.target

at all?

[Bug 1451797] [NEW] rc.local should require network-online.target

2015-05-05 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Public bug reported:

The current definition in `/lib/systemd/system/rc-local.service` uses
`After=network.target`, which is pretty useless, as `network.target`
according to
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/NetworkTarget/ only has
relevance during shutdown, which never happens for rc.local.

The result is that tasks in rc.local may get started before the network
is properly setup, which may cause them to fail, as this is a
significant change from the old SysV init behaviour.

The solution would be to change the dependency to

Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

see also the notes in
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.special.html for
that.

Looking at the source code a bit, I see that in
systemctl.c:enable_sysv_units there is a comment that it should
reshuffle the args array, but it seems it never does that? So
strv_isempty(names) in enable_unit never matches, causing the call to
systemd which is failing, because there is no unit file.

Re: [Bug 1450989] Re: USB attached keyboard and mouse don't work at the login time to Ubuntu Trusty Tahr 64 bit

2015-05-04 Thread Dr JD Wallach
Hi,
Here are the results from the command sudo dmidecode -s bios-version
sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

trusty64@trusty64-1015PX:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version
A06
trusty64@trusty64-1015PX:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
01/15/2015

Sad to say, but after updating the Dell 3847 computer BIOS from version
A04 (4/3/2014) to version A06 successfully, and after re booting the
computer the problem is still present.

Here are several bits of information that might be of interest:

When turning the power switch on the computer, and then choosing the
Ubuntu operating system from the Grub menu, there is no connect message
and the mouse and the keyboard are inoperable and therefore it is
impossible to login into the Ubuntu operating system.

The Ubuntu operating system login screen functions only if one logs into
the windows operating system first and then RE-STARTS from there into
Grub and eventually Ubuntu..

Once one is in the Ubuntu operating system environment, one can
successfully RE-START back to Grub and eventually the Ubuntu operating
system, as both the mouse and keyboard are operable after the connect
message comes on.

The BIOS update was done within the windows 7x64 Pro environment, as the
instructions for the BIOS update on the Dell support website were
windows 7x64 Pro specific.

Once the BIOS update was done successfully he computer was RE-STARTED
back to windows 7x64 Pro via Grub.

Once the windows 7x64 Pro environment was completely established, and
after verifying that the environment was working properly after the BIOS
update, the computer once again was RE-STARTED.

Once the computer RE-STARTED and the Grub menu for the choice of
operating systems came on, Ubuntu 14.04 was chosen.

Eventually the Login screen came on, and immediately received a message
on the upper right hand side of the screen informing that the computer
was now connected to the network (you are now connected to etc.).

Once the connection message disappeared both the mouse and the keyboard
were operable and login was possible.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Dr JD Wallach, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
 better. As per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-

computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A06). If you update to

 change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide
the output of the following terminal command:
 sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status Confirmed.

 Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1366519] Re: Incredibly slow editing of documents when connected to network

2015-03-22 Thread Dr Michael Brooks
Workaround from upstream:
clear the recent documents list (File-Recent Documents-Clear List)

This doesn't work for me. Why? Because clicking on any item in the
Recent Documents List, including Clear List actually just opens up the
first Recent Document!!

Most enterprise users will load and work on files from network drives.
This slow editing bug is really hurting us. I suggest you bump up the
importance if LibreOffice aspires to attract business users.

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2015-03-03 Thread Dr. Horst Armbruster
Bug Confirmed! to persist through several updates.
I learned programing on an Altair, used DEC computers and decided recently not
to use Windows any more on my personal computers due to the mess the constant
updating of MS Windows 8.1 created for the use of an HP printer. I unpluged an
Ethernet cable on a computer running National Instruments' LabView to prevent
it from being updated automatically. If Ubuntu cannot update Ubuntu for
whatever reason I just shall buy an Apple computer for my private use.

[Bug 1423943] [NEW] Buffer overflow in prayertime/src/astro.c part of libitl_0.7.0.

2015-02-20 Thread Dr Djalel Chefrour
Public bug reported:

Salam

In libitl-0.7.0/prayertime/src/astro.c +812
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/utopic/libitl/utopic/view/head:/prayertime/src/astro.c#L812

R4sum = R4[i][0] * cos(R4[i][1] + R4[i][2] * JM);

The R4[] array (declared in in 525) has only one element therefore R[i] where i
is always =2 (from previous loop) is an invalid access.
The C compile cannot pick this kind of errors. Other languages do.
By chance memory after R4 is filled with another array declared just after R4
in line 529. So no memory violation happens during runtime.

I don't know how to fix it though. May be replacing i with 0, but then why use
a 2D array!

Is this bug linked with the FIXIT comment at line 768?

Anyway this bug doesn't seem to crash the program or alter the good
results of prayer times (at least in my simple tests).

Found on:
Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
libitl0:
  Installed: 0.7.0-3build1

Best regards

[Bug 1276960] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 upgrade broke click-and-drag

Also apparent in 14.04 with Synaptics Touchpad. If the cursor is in
motion while the left touchpad button is pressed, the click event only
occurs after a long delay.

I've tried all sorts of synclient settings, nothing improves the
situation. Interestingly a USB mouse works fine, it's just the touchpad
that is affected.

scanimage -L does list the device at first, it also is listed (always)
doing an lsusb. Trying to use a scanning application (skanlite, xsane or
vuescan) each app is not able to find the device and it does not show up
any longer with scanimage -L but still under lsusb.

[Bug 1308451] Re: Epson Perfection 1670 (Snapscan) isn't working, some kind of crash after first initialisation

2014-06-27 Thread Dr. Juergen Helmers
I solved my problem by redownloading the firmware file which I had place
in /etc/sane.d. The file that works for me :

fc6ef4674ffe8d2afa403f79cc8dbc0e esfw30.bin

Scanning works now.

Turns out my problem turned out to be somewhere else and I noticed upstream had
not updated their so numbers even.
Still, a confusing situation, the mismatching numbers, but not a bug as such.

Affects me too. Stock upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04.

The arrogance and buck-passing behaviour of the Ubuntu devs on here is
astounding.

This is a very definite critical bug where the update process is failing
to handle what seems to be a common situation. Stop arguing and start
fixing, there clearly is a need.

[Bug 1256832] Re: Canon Selphy CP510 not recognised by CUPS

2013-12-07 Thread dr
I found a long discussion on one website, that gutenprint hat developed
an better backend for the canon Selphy printer. There for CUPS may not
include a backend for that printers.

http://gutenprint.996281.n3.nabble.com/Updated-spooler-for-Canon-Selphy-
dye-sub-printers-td6198.html

And indeed, I found an entrance in cups-1.7.0 source code which says it
is blacklist:

# Canon SELPHY CP510
0x04a9 0x3128 blacklist

But the manual of gutenprint says:
“Gutenprint 5.2 no longer provides the epson and canon back ends provided by
earlier releases of Gutenprint to return printer status information. Instead,
the standard back ends (such
as the usb backend) should be used.”

Hey folks, does this mean we now have no backend for canon Selphy
printers at all?

I only have the wish to print some picture-cards for my family.:-(

“lpinfo” and “check-device-ids.py” does not show the printer.

My Brother laser printer was recognised by CUPS immediately and works
perfect on that system.

On an older linux installation with CUPS 1.5.4-22 the CP510 printer
works without problems.

[Bug 1247833] [NEW] Printout problems of German 13.04 manual

2013-11-04 Thread Dr. Heimo Wissing
Public bug reported:

Hello

I tried to make a printout of the german 13.04 manual from the download of the
printer friendly version, using a HP color LaserJet 2600nse, running Ubuntu
13.10, using the printer drivers provided. The printout quality is poor, normal
printing seem to have a shadow, bold printing generats curious signs.
Using Windows XP and Acrobat XI reader Printout is of good quality, but there
are merly black bars instead of the Text on the Title Page. So I wonder,
whether the Bugs are in the text or the Printer Drivers provided with Ubuntu,
as both Versions Printer and Display appear fine on the Screen.

Regards
H. Wissing

[Bug 1234469] Re: Network does not come up after resuming from suspend.

2013-10-20 Thread Dr. Dabbles
How was this not a blocker for release? We're talking about impacting
every single Ubuntu user that suspends their computer, and the entire
goal of Ubuntu is to make Linux easier for the average user! I happen to
be knowledgeable enough to know NM has a power state within itself that
I can set. My family, however, would never even know to look for this.

[Bug 1234469] Re: Network does not come up after resuming from suspend.

2013-10-14 Thread Dr. Dabbles
that: That error indicates the issue happened during suspend/hibernate.
NetworkManager never completed or reported completion of the sleep task
it was sent. Could be why it never got woken up.

[Bug 1237200] [NEW] stunnel4 startup script ignores second configuration file

2013-10-08 Thread Dr Grischa Meyer
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 13.04
stunnel4 version 3:4.53-1

I have to *.conf files in /etc/stunnel/ but only one gets started by the
init.d script.

Ie.:
$ sudo service stunnel4 start
Starting SSL tunnels: [Already running: /etc/stunnel/nfs.conf] [Already
running: /etc/stunnel/redis.conf] stunnel.

However only one is running.

I can start the second one by running
$ sudo stunnel4 /etc/stunnel/redis.conf
and then it runs fine.

So the issue is somewhere in the init.d script.

[Bug 1236170] Re: grub install fails during install of Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Beta2 64bit on Asus EEEPC 1215B

2013-10-07 Thread Dr Paul Brewer
CLUE:

Tried the chrooted grub reintall and manual fix procedures at
http://superuser.com/questions/376470/how-to-reinstall-grub2-efi

apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64 fails with Killed and
an error about missing systemd

/bin/efibootmgr is present in the chrooted environment

manual fix efibootmgr -c --disk /dev/sda --part 1 also fails with
Killed

Nothing else, just Killed. No hint of what killed it.

dmesg contains an OOPS
note: efibootmgr[3424] exited with preempt_count 1
BUG: scheduling while atomic: efibootmgr/3424/0x1002
Module list.

Will attach the dmesg file if possible

** Attachment added: dmesg file showing kernel(?) error when running
efibootmgr
