[Bug 1043031] Re: ja/zh fontconfig configuration only applied when locale is set 'natively'
Hey guys, I have just installed Raring (13.04) after using Precise (12.04) for the last year and ran into the same problem as Ding Zhou and Ryou Ezoe above when I couldn't find fontconfig-voodoo. I frequently need to work with Simplified Chinese and, to a lesser extent, Japanese, so I always run sudo fontconfig-voodoo -s -f zh_CN on new systems, but despite having played around with Language Selector, I have so far been unable to get fonts to look properly (see attached screenshot). Thank you for looking into this, Steve. My experience is the same as Resat's, though. Changing the language settings in language selector and logging off and on again (or rebooting) does not affect the desktop language in any way on the standard Ubuntu Desktop version. I have set up Ubuntu on a number of different systems, including virtual machines, and have consistently encountered this problem, always using a fresh image from ubuntu.com, typically completely formatting the hard drive and fully updating the system before running any tests. While the comgt workaround does not seem to work anymore on 12.04, deactivating the PIN on my SIM card did the trick this time. [Bug 993818] Re: Language selector fails to set language and regional formats on user level (Precise)
** Description changed: Just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin (64 bit) last weekend and noticed that changing the display language and regional formats via language selector does not have any effect unless changes are applied system-wide. Steps to reproduce: 1. On a clean Precise install, navigate to System Settings - Language support 2. Select desired display language (e.g. German) by moving it to the top of the list; select desired regional format setting (e.g. German/Germany) from the Regional Formats tab 3. Log out and back in, open a terminal and run locale Expected result: Display language and regional formats are set according to user's choice -- i.e. here German and German/Germany. Terminal shows that all locale variables are set to de and de_DE respectively. What happened instead: The display language remains set to (American) English and terminal reports that locale variables remain set to en and en_US. The system does not honour the settings applied through language-selector. Workaround: Clicking Apply system-wide on both the Language and the Regional Formats tabs on language-selector will change the language for the whole system. [Bug 425881] Re: language panel does not show up
From my experience, the bug started appearing on Maverick, when the default behaviour of the iBus language bar was changed to embedded instead of when active, and hasn't disappeared since. Changing the setting to when active in the iBus preferences does not always make the language bar come up when iBus is active. A workaround, which termporarily fixes the issue for me, has been to click on the iBus panel icon and select restart from the context menu. When iBus has restarted, the language bar behaves properly. The issue reappaears after a reboot of Ubuntu, though. I have so far observed this problem on every Ubuntu installation I have set up for myself or friends. I suppose most people don't bother changing the panel's default behaviour in the preferences, and restarting the daemon from the panel menu is uncomplicated. But from my experience, this is a major dealbreaker for Asian users. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/425881 Title: language panel does not show up To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ibus/+bug/425881/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 882702] Re: ibus-tegaki crashes on Ubuntu Oneiric
After playing around a little more and googling for the terminal error message, i found that this is actually related to a bug in ibus itself. i had unchecked use system keyboard layout in the advanced tab, but this caused ibus to crash when switching to ibus-tegaki. after activating the option, ibus now stays active and does not crash when performing the steps above. so i will add ibus to the list of affected projects. other than that, tegaki still does not behave quite as expected. after switching away from ibus-tegaki to another input method, tegaki's drawing pad still remains open. this is not intended (it does not happen on other platforms running the same version of ibus-tegaki) and it's a bit of a nuisance. it may be a good idea to have a look at how ibus- tegaki and the current version of ibus interact to find the root of the problem. ** Summary changed: - ibus-tegaki crashes on Ubuntu Oneiric + ibus-tegaki crashes iBus on Ubuntu Oneiric ** Also affects: ibus Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882702 Title: ibus-tegaki crashes iBus on Ubuntu Oneiric To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ibus/+bug/882702/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 792735] Re: Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG
Thank you for your reply, Gunnar. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I set up Lucid and Natty on a virtual machine and ran a few more additional tests. Also, after reading through the Language Support help document and the previous discussion at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/553162 I now have a much better understanding of how language preferences are set on Ubuntu, and how those settings have changed over time. As I understand it, until a while ago, when selecting a certain language at login through GDM, this would change all language-related variables (i.e. $LANG and all $LC_* variables), which means that the display language as well as regional formats were altered. The change you (@Gunnar) have introduced only changes the display language and leaves regional formats unchanged, so you can run an US English language- session of Ubuntu which displays date, time and currency values in the Swedish format, for example. You have achieved this by setting the $LANGUAGE and $LC_MESSAGES variables to the selected language, but leaving the other $LC_* variables unchanged, which thus retain the setting from gnome-language-selector - Text. Hence, setting $LANGUAGE and $LC_MESSAGES on a per-programme basis allows a user to run programmes in a different language, e.g. env LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8 firefox env LANGUAGE=en gedit If I understand correctly, env LANG used to work on earlier Ubuntu versions because $LANGUAGE still wasn't being used then. Under those circumstances, altering $LANG would change a programme's language. To achieve the same behaviour on Natty, $LANGUAGE needs to be unset: unset LANGUAGE; env LANG=en_US.UTF-8 gedit While changes you have applied appear logical to me, I am wondering if this is in line with how most applications handle language settings? What I mean is, are you sure all programmes either use $LANGUAGE or $LC_MESSAGES to determine their display language? Are there applications which look at other variables, e.g. $LANG, to determine their display language? Are such problems to be expected on the user's side? Ironically, both commands you suggested above (env LANGUAGE and env LC_MESSAGES) also work for me now. Not sure if I did anything wrong before, but it seems this bug report is invalid. I'll track this issue for a few more days and, if no illogical behaviour appears again, mark the bug as invalid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792735 Title: Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/792735/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 792735] [NEW] Language selection at login overrides language selection via env LANG
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm After installing Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) on my system, I started experiencing problems where the language selection at login (GDM) overrides any language selection which I apply on a per-programme basis via env LANG. I usually run Ubuntu in Chinese, but start certain programmes in English by setting the $LANG variable to en_US.UTF-8: env LANG=en_US.UTF-8 gedit Expected result: gedit will open up with an English GUI (this used to work throughout the last three versions of Ubuntu, i.e. Karmic to Maverick) What happens instead: gedit opens up in Chinese (see attached screenshot env-lang-problem.png) The same applies for other programmes which I used to run in English using the above command, e.g. firefox and thunderbird. I tried using env LC_MESSAGES (env LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8 firefox) as suggested here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/553162), but this didn't make a difference either. Using export also didn't change anything. The language selected at login sticks and all programmes open up in Chinese. I have attached an output of locale below and hope that this helps to track down the problem. Other than selecting iBus as my input method and installing support for Chinese and a few other languages, I didn't apply any other changes through gnome-language- selector. Suspicious behaviour: Throughout the last three Ubuntu versions, when selecting an Asian language at login, that language would be written in its native characters, e.g. 汉语(中国)or 日本語(日本). Since Natty, all languages are displayed in English, e.g. Chinese (China) or Japanese (Japan). Not sure if this is related, but I thought it might help ... [Bug 749871] Re: Attempt to Use Realtek RTL8192CE Wireless Causes Computer to Freeze
I can confirm what Chad Billman said in post #4. The Realtek 8192CE driver which is currently included in the Natty kernel is very unstable. I also experience situations where no traffic is sent or received for a period of a few seconds up to a few minutes. This happens 2 to 3 times a day. Sometimes the connection also drops completely, forcing me to reconnect. Installing the official Realtek driver improves stability a bit. Yes, of course. Firefox wasn't running when I executed the env LC_MESSAGES and env LANG commands. I also tried running the command with other programmes, such as gedit, but always got the same result: contrary to my expectation, the programme would not open up in the language specified, but in the language I picked at login. This didn't happen on Lucid, and, as I pointed out above, stopped happening on Maverick. Do other users also experience this problem? [Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing
I am not sure if this is related, but I am experiencing problems with GDM overriding language selections I apply on a per-programme basis via the env variable. Normally, when I select Chinese (China) at the login screen, I can still run programmes in English by prepending an env argument, e.g. env LANG=en_US.UTF-8 firefox. That way I can run an English instance of Firefox in a Chinese language Ubuntu session. This was working fine up to Lucid. Maverick was the first Ubuntu release that caused problems. After installing Maverick, whatever language I specified at the login screen would stick, and I couldn't run programmes in an alternative language by prepending env. The issue disappeared somewhere along the way after an update, though. However, I just finished setting up a fresh install of Natty and the problem reappaeared. [Bug 686333] Re: include Realtek RTL8192ce driver in Ubuntu
I confirm that the driver for the Realtek RTL8192CE card is loaded by default now on Natty. However, the connection is very unstable. On Maverick I used to work with the original Realtek driver (version 2.6.0005.1116.2010) from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=48PFid=48Level=5Conn=4DownTypeID=3GetDown=falseDownloads=true#RTL8188CE , which I compiled myself. Although this wasn't ideal, since I always had to recompile after a major upgrade, I had a working internet connection. However, after upgrading to Natty, my connection became very unstable. Very often, even though I am connected to wifi, I can't transmit any data. Less often, but still rather frequently, I get completely disconnected and have to reconnect. Could this be related to a wrong configuration or the wrong kernel modules being loaded on Natty? I am running Ubuntu Natty 11.04 on a Japanese Core i5 ThinkPad Edge 13. lspci -v tells me the following: 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. [Bug 607708] Re: Nautilus is generally slow
I reopened the bug report because this is still an issue and has not changed over the last three Ubuntu releases (Karmic to Maverick). I am currently running Ubuntu Maverick on a Intel i5 quad core CPU and Nautilus is still extremely slow to open. The first time Nautilus opens a folder it takes about 2-3 seconds until the window finally shows up. Also, as Mohamed pointed out above, folders that contain a large number of files are very slow to load, and take at least 5 seconds, even on this machine. I have tested this on a wide variety of systems, from high end desktop PCs (= quad core) to laptops (= dual core 1.6 mhz) to netbooks (single core atom cpus), in various Linux distributions (Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.10, Fedora 12 and SUSE 11.2) and in 32 as well as 64 bit architectures, and I can confirm that this is not hardware related as Nautlius is very slow in all these configurations. Nautilus is typically slower by a ratio of 2:1 to 3:1 when compared to Windows Explorer (Windows 7) on dual boot systems. This is very much an issue considering that there are many fine Linux file managers out there that outperform Nautilus by far. [Bug 98890] Re: SCIM wont work with Java
Hi everyone, I realize this bug hasn't been a high priority since iBus was introduced, but as far as I can tell there is still a conflict between Java and SCIM of some sort. I am currently running Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 and SCIM input doesn't work in Java applications, even though I have applied the changes outlined by Ryu above. The reason I want to use SCIM is because iBus still has some problems with Java of its own (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/481656) -- and that didn't change throughout the last three Ubuntu versions. So I decided to give SCIM a try and use it for the applications that don't work properly with iBus. I set up SCIM by installing the following packages through Synaptic: scim, scim-hangul, scim-modules-table, scim-chewing, scim- tables-ja, scim-tables-ko, scim-pinyin, scim-anthy, scim-tables- additional, scim-chinese, scim-tables-zh. When running Firefox using env XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 GTK_IM_MODULE=scim firefox I can use SCIM throughout the programme without any problems. The tray icon comes up, I press CTRL + Space, choose the desired input method and type away. However, when running the same command with Java applications, like netbeans, for example, SCIM remains inactive. That is, its tray icon appears, but I cannot activate it using the keyboard shortcut. You will notice that I ran all applications using the LANG=en_US.UTF-8 argument to avoid running into the same problem as Ryu. I applied his changes to the SCIM config files (/etc/scim/global and ~/.scim/global) nonetheless, to rule out any peculiar conflicts, but to no avail. Some users on the Ubuntu Forums suggested copying the user SCIM settings from ~/.scim to /root/.scim (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=338991). I tried that too, but this didn't help either. I should probably mention that I have rebooted each time after changing a configuration file, and that the iBus daemon was not running when trying the above commands. So far without any results. I hope someone who is more knowledgeable than me can help. All the above works perfectly fine in openSUSE, so as far as I can tell, this bug is still valid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98890 Title: SCIM wont work with Java -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 120281] Re: Opening a message from the drafts folder for editing does not remove added linebreaks
I can confirm that this bug still exists in Thunderbird 3.1.7 on Ubuntu 10.10 and has *not been fixed*. To reproduce the bug, set up a standard installation of Thunderbird (all settings on default, no extensions installed), create a new email and type in some random text (let's say more than 200 characters). Thunderbird will by default wrap lines at 72 characters. However, when the email is saved as a draft and reopened later, it contains hard returns at the positions where text has been wrapped before. When adding new content, lines now all break at the wrong position, which has to be corrected manually using the [del] key. To illustrate the problem I have set up a new email, put in some sample Lorem Ipsum text and saved it as a draft. After reopening the email I added new text to the second sentence. Note how Thunderbird retains the original wrap positions as hard line breaks instead of continuing the original text after the word HERE: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vestibulum NEW TEXT ADDED HERE ultrices posuere nibh sit amet auctor. Aliquam ut nisl augue. Mauris ac lacus quam. This is a very major bug which makes using drafts nearly impossible. [Bug 481656] Re: iBus blocks input in Java application
In my experience Java programmes also crash very often when iBus is enabled, potentially causing severe data loss. There seems to be a certain incompatibility between iBus and Java -- both Sun Java and OpenJDK. Hope the Peng can look into this. @unimatrix: This workaround only terminates the iBus daemon when a Java application is launched, doesn't it? We still have the problem of not being able to work with iBus in Java applications, e.g. when you need to enter text in a language that requires an input method framework. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/481656 Title: iBus blocks input in Java application -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set
The last weeks have seen a lot of discussion on the bug, and it seems the general consensus is that this behaviour isn't desired by most users and is, in fact, a major issue for most people. People have pointed out that this feature is very standard in most major operating systems and there seems to be a common desire for a quick and stable solution to this problem. Apparently, the window manager isn't the only one at fault, but changes in the applications' handling of window positions/size are required as well. However, there seems to be room for improvement in the window manager -- which is only reasonable, since obviously these things work well with other window managers. Considering the importance and visibility of this issue, would it perhaps be possible to include this bug in the one hundred paper cuts project? -- provided this issue fits the scope of the project. https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/12/get-involved-with-the-one-hundred-paper-cuts-project/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 Title: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 33883] Re: hidden files not included in directory 'properties'
I confirm this bug for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and Nautilus 2.30.1. The preferences window doesn't show the right file size and the workaround provided in the description doesn't change this. Even with View - Show hidden files enabled the file size file count in the preferences window are still wrong. This is extremely confusing and annoying behaviour and should be fixed asap. [Bug 615771] Re: acroread 9.3.3 sometimes fails to respond to mouse clicks
I've found a semi-feasible solution to this problem by trying an old hack that I used to use on Windows back in the days. You can speed up Adobe Reader by removing some of the plugins that ship with it. I've tried this with Acroread 8, the folder names may be different for other versions of Reader. 1. Run gksu nautilus /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins in the terminal 2. Move the plugins to a subfolder plugins_disabled Note that this will remove functionality from Adobe Reader. Depending on which plugins you disable, you will lose the capability to search through a document, for example. Most features though, like the capability to read out a document aloud, are used by very few people. So it doesn't make sense to load all features at startup. And you can always re-enable components by moving the plugin api-file back to the default folder. This solved the problem of random freezes for me. This will also make Adobe Reader start up much faster :-) -- acroread 9.3.3 sometimes fails to respond to mouse clicks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615771 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Running Lucid Lynx. The problem is still there. After starting Adobe the system locks up completely for a couple of seconds. I tried Acroread 9 from the Repos and Acroread 8 from Adobe's homepage. Both versions cause this problem. Furthermore, once Acroread has recovered and you start scrolling around the programme ocassionally locks up again. I have absolutely no clue what is causing this, but I'd be happy to help sorting this out. -- Kubuntu 9.04 Xorg/KDE freeze starting adobe reader 9.1.0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386905 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Looks like I was a little too fast. The problem still persists, although it's not as bad as before. The connection still drops out frequently, but comes back after around 30-60 seconds. I'm not sure what is causing this, but it's definitively one of the most annoying problems I've had with Ubuntu so far and, as sad as it is, but I might ditch it for this reason. If you can give me a few hints on how to retrieve the information you need, I'd be happy to help. Cheers. ** Changed in: ekiga (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- Could not register with SIP server on same machine https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369050 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 497040] Re: OpenOffice Writer always scrolls back to cursor after click
I can confirm this behaviour. My research also suggests that this issue has been around for quite a while: http://www.google.com/search?hl=enq=openoffice+scrolling+annoyingaq=foq=aqi= I wasn't able to find a solution or a workaround online. Digging through OO Writer's settings also didn't yield any success. [Bug 493342] Re: wifi will drop out at ramdomly, I am using a Toshiba NB205 with ubuntu 9.1
I am on a Samsung NC130 anynet netbook which also uses the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express). I have similar problems with WiFi dropping out randomly. I am occasionally able to reconnect, but usually only a reboot fixes the issue. -- wifi will drop out at ramdomly, I am using a Toshiba NB205 with ubuntu 9.1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/493342 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 439538] Re: Grub2 don't provide a option for rename menuentry on /etc/default/grub
I think this bug should have more priority. Most notebook they have a recovery partition to recover to factory settings. grub2 takes the menuentry with nearly same name Name in grub.cfg - Windows Vista (/dev/sda1) - This one boots Windows - Windows Vista (/dev/sda2) - This boots the recoverymode - With this its possible to delete hole Linux partitions So I want this to rename for other people to clearly see that this is really dangerous to start. Is it possible to change by hand ? and how? -- Grub2 don't provide a option for rename menuentry on /etc/default/grub https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439538 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
