I have the same here with: Linux Mint 12 AMD Athlon 64 x2 4400+ ATI RS880 (Radeon HD 4200) Open Source Driver After I did some adjusts, it stops freezing (since tomorrow): 1) install cinnamon-session 2) full remove MATE (from http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42t=86813 // Remove MATE Altogheter) 3) remove mint-meta-gnome and mint-meta-mgse I know that is not a depend sequence and, probably only one of this steps hade killed the #freeze.way.of.life, but I wish that this information could help somebody.
