[Bug 1571416] Re: System freezes shortly after reaching the desktop (Ubuntu MATE 16.04, PowerPC)

2020-01-19 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
@john This problem was meanwhile worked around by setting
radeon.agp.mode=-1 as default in recent kernels (=> 5.0 ?). So you don't
need to fiddle around with your settings here. Unfortunately Ubuntu ppc
support is dead, only ppc64le option is maintained.

But there are other distros (Void, Adelie). Void has very good ppc
support, a working Firefox 72 for ppc64 and working epiphany browser for
ppc. Also live images are avaiable: https://voidlinux-ppc.org/

[Bug 1571416]

2018-12-05 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Played around a bit with xorg and kernel options on my G5 and worked out
that I can drive the Radeon 9650 at AGP x8 if I disable DRI completely
via Option "NoAccel" "true" in /etc/xorg.conf.

I had no GPU-lockups since then and xorg is much more responsive despite
lacking DRI hardware acceleration (radeon.agpmode=-1 with DRI enabled).

[Bug 1571416]

2018-12-05 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
It seems the patches to force Radeon cards into PCI-mode (or force it
via radeon.agpmode=-1) are no definitive solution. My G4 and G5 Macs
hold out longer running X but sooner or later a hard lock is
unavoidable. Tested this on a recent software stack: 4.8.1-kernel, xorg-
server-1.18.4, xf86-video-ati-7.7.1 and mesa-12.0.3.

See my comment at Bug 94877.

Yep. And I was astonished to see the desktop running faster actually. ;)

[Bug 1620286] Re: firefox crashed with SIGSEGV in moz_abort()

Hiya! Thanks for your feedback. But as the bug was on 16.10 and 16.04
ist the most recent version for PowerPC machines (which is phased out
furthermore) additional testing won't make much sense.

I would test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version if there was one
for PowerPC. AFAIK Ubuntu MATE 16.04 is the last supported version on
this cpu architecture.

Will mark as 'fix commited' as the fix will be in the next stable

[Bug 1545442] Re: ubuntu-updater hangs after finishing the update

Seems to be fixed in Ubuntu MATE 16.10. But sometimes you have to wait
ages until ubuntu-updater finishes, e.g. more than 20min on my PowerBook
G4 5,8.

Updating via apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade is way faster.

[Bug 1606089] Re: unable to boot after 'entire disk' install (16.10, ppc)

2016-10-13 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Good to hear! GRUB2 is actively developed and works fine on my
amd64-boxes. Hopefully causing less headache on OpenFirmware-machines
too?

I suppose it's too much effort to adapt some ubiquity script to create
this ext2 boot-partition by default as is creates the ext4 / and swap by
default during the "entire disk"-install option?

Yes, Xenials daily iso of yesterday also worked.

I even tried to get this upstream via yaboot-de...@lists.ozlabs.org as
stated on https://lists.ozlabs.org/listinfo/ but there my message sits
waiting to get approved by the list moderator since 2 weeks...

"Hello!

https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/yaboot/+bug/1606089

Seems yaboot 'lost' the ability to boot into current (newly formatted)
ext4 partitions. Booting into ext2 partitions still works.

[Bug 1631895] [NEW] NewWorld-Boot Partition wrongly selected as root partition (Lubuntu/Ubuntu MATE 16.10)

2016-10-10 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Public bug reported:

On PowerPC Apple machines with mac-partition layout a NewWorld-boot
partition is needed, formatted to HFS-filesystem.

Recent Ubiquity can no longer handle this. There is no option to format
a partition to HFS. Ubiquity can create a newworld-boot partition (means
the boot flag is set corretly), but this partition has no filesystem and
its mountpoint is also set to "/" which is wrong. You get no appropriate
error message and if continued the install simply stalls infinitely.

As a workaround you need to use gparted first to appropriately create
this HFS-formatted newworld-partition.

2016-10-03 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Todays (03.10.2016) daily iso is still unbootable on my G5, though it is
a lot more verbose about not finding a media containing a live
filesystem. See attatched screenshot.

Now as I see theres error messenges I rememember the same error happened
during the beta phase of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 too, at least the error
messages were exactly the same. It got fixed later in the beta phase of
16.04.

I cannot add logs with apport-collect because the non-working kernel

Tried to boot todays daily Yakkety iso on my PowerMac G5 7,3 which failed:
"Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" (see photo). Same
problem also for Lubuntu's daily Yakkety iso.

The same iso boots however on my PowerBook G4 5,6 + 5,8.

2016-09-05 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
After a reinstall with an ext4 / partition I finally got a 4.8.0-rc4
mainline build running. At least there's no instant crash any longer.
The system was running for about 3 hours or so, but with some drm CP
ring warnings.

[Bug 1612448] Re: Ubuntu MATE 'entire disk' installation crashes (16.10, ppc)

2016-08-28 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Tested again with todays (28.08.2016) daily iso. The entire disk
installation finishes now correctly but in the end the system fails to
boot due to Bug #1606089.

Installation with manual partitioning works again as long as an ext2
boot partition is used.

Finally got around compiling a proper mainline Ubuntu 4.8-rc3 kernel.
Unfortunately it does not boot into my root partition due to an btrfs

2016-08-26 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Nope, it does not work. Just tested it. So this must be a regression,
installation with manual partition worked on earlier dailies.

[Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-29 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Added the upstream bug to this tracker. Then I realized that strictly
speaking this bug "X doesn't start with r128 driver (ATI RAGE)
[powerpc]" has a different meaning from this one here "blotchy
graphics". I think it's best to create a new Ubuntu Xorg bug and add the
upstream info there.

Sorry for the noise!

@Fritz:

Your xorg.conf looks fine. After altering parameters check your Xorg.log after
you restarted X, to look what exactly went wrong with the driver you selected
xorg.conf. Just use the different drivers "modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw"
with different bit depths and see what happens.
If your monitor is capacle also always use the native resolution of your
monitor. The Rage 128 is able to do 1920x1080 if you got the most recent PM 3,1
(http://identimac.com/modelDetails/Power%20Macintosh%20G4/23.html)

[Bug 1607128] [NEW] Lubuntu 'entire disk' install crashes (16.10, ppc)

2016-07-27 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Public bug reported:

Tried to to an 'entire disk' install from Lubuntu 16.10 daily iso on my
PowerBook 5,6 (PowePC). Ubiquity shows an error window (see screenshot)
and crashes later. Unfortunately apport-bug did not open any browser
window so I was not able to use apport-bug...

On 2nd try I found out that yaboot simply was not installed on todays
daily iso. After manually installing it via "apt-get install yaboot",
the installation process completes! Though I hit another bug afterwards
(#1606089).

[Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-27 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
"r128" is the appropriate driver for your card but obiously does not
work properly on your hardware. It would be a good idea to let the
upstream devs know that. xorg/driver/xf86-video-r128 is actively
maintained and still receives patches (last one 8 days ago). You could
file a bug against upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=r128 Just be sure
to have a complete Xorg.log ready to post this bug upstream and state
that it happens on an Apple PowerMac 3,1.

The "Invalid ROM contents"-line does not matter very much, it seems
pretty standard on PPC-Apple. My Powerbooks are working fine also though
this error shows up.

In the meantime you could try to get one of the other drivers
"modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw" to work with 24 bit depth. You can use
my xorg.conf as starting point and edit it manually. Just put it in
/etc/X11.

Check your boot messages with "journalctl -k" and your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log then you will get a hint what went wrong with r128.

On current Ubuntu versions there is no need for an xorg.conf, only if
you need to tune some specific parameters. No fiddling around with "sudo
Xorg-configure" needed.

I tried an install with manual partitioning, and made a seperate 1 GB

Are there any known issues regarding yaboot & ext4 & partition size?

[Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-25 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Had a closer look at your Xorg.log:

[25.862] (II) LoadModule: "r128"
[25.863] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module r128
[25.863] (II) UnloadModule: "r128"
[25.863] (II) Unloading r128
[25.896] (EE) Failed to load module "r128" (module does not exist, 0)
[25.896] (II) LoadModule: "modesetting"

xorg tries to load the appropriate driver for your ATI Rage, wich is
"r128". Since this driver is not found, it uses the generic
"modesetting" driver, which in turn resorts to a 15bpp framebuffer.

Just found out that the needed xserver-xorg-video-r128 package is no
longer installed by default in Yakkety. Maybe this is also the case in
Xenial. So the easy solution for you would be to "sudo apt-get install
xserver-xorg-video-r128" and reboot. Maybe you get an accelerated 24bpp
desktop again without needing a supplementary xorg.conf!

>Since the dev had gotten back to me to post the screen shot, and then,

Nope it is the other way round. The background image is 24bpp but the
display driver has to show it on an 15/16bpp screen - it needs to reduce
the colours somehow which makes the image appear blotchy. Icons don't
have that many gradients which leaves them looking crisp on 15/16bpp.

@Fritz:

>From the XorgLog.txt you posted I gather that you are running the "ATI

which causes your blotchy images:

Do you use some config-file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ or is this the
default behauviour of the ATI Rage 128 PRO in your Power Mac 3,1?

[Bug 1606089] [NEW] unable to boot after 'entire disk' install (16.10, ppc)

2016-07-24 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Public bug reported:

Just did an entire disk install from todays (24.07.2016) Yakkety daily.
Installation procedure went fine, but the automatically created
/etc/yaboot.conf seems faulty.

1st stage-boot runs fine, the boot options are displayed correctly,
pressing "L" leaves me at the 2nd stage boot prompt where you can choose
between "Linux" and "old" boot options. But either of them does not
work, throwing the error message:

"/pci@f400/ata-6@d/@0:3,/boot/vmlinux: unknown or corrupt
filesystem"

To rule out other issues I did an openfirmware reset, wiped /dev/sda and
tried a second time with a fresh mac partition table. But the problem
stays the same, 16.10 is not bootable on my PowerBook 5,6. It did run
16.04 before.

Partition layout is the standard created by "entire disk" install, /dev/sda4 is
swap.

[Bug 1101881] Re: software-properties-gtk crashed with TypeError in __new__(): object of type 'NoneType' has no len()

2016-06-25 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Works for me! Version tested: software-properties 0.96.20.2

I got no choice of mirrors any longer (for ppc in Austria), so no crash.

when trying to select a mirror server from the software-properties. I
already filed a bug-report for this issue: #1582017.
