[Bug 1571416] Re: System freezes shortly after reaching the desktop (Ubuntu MATE 16.04, PowerPC)
@john This problem was meanwhile worked around by setting radeon.agp.mode=-1 as default in recent kernels (=> 5.0 ?). So you don't need to fiddle around with your settings here. Unfortunately Ubuntu ppc support is dead, only ppc64le option is maintained. But there are other distros (Void, Adelie). Void has very good ppc support, a working Firefox 72 for ppc64 and working epiphany browser for ppc. [Bug 1571416]
Played around a bit with xorg and kernel options on my G5 and worked out that I can drive the Radeon 9650 at AGP x8 if I disable DRI completely via Option "NoAccel" "true" in /etc/xorg.conf. I had no GPU-lockups since then and xorg is much more responsive despite lacking DRI hardware acceleration (radeon.agpmode=-1 with DRI enabled). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1571416 Title: System freezes shortly after reaching the desktop (Ubuntu MATE 16.04, PowerPC) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1571416/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1571416]
It seems the patches to force Radeon cards into PCI-mode (or force it via radeon.agpmode=-1) are no definitive solution. My G4 and G5 Macs hold out longer running X but sooner or later a hard lock is unavoidable. Tested this on a recent software stack: 4.8.1-kernel, xorg- server-1.18.4, xf86-video-ati-7.7.1 and mesa-12.0.3. [Bug 1631895] [NEW] NewWorld-Boot Partition wrongly selected as root partition (Lubuntu/Ubuntu MATE 16.10)

[Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
Added the upstream bug to this tracker. Then I realized that strictly speaking this bug "X doesn't start with r128 driver (ATI RAGE) [powerpc]" has a different meaning from this one here "blotchy graphics". I think it's best to create a new Ubuntu Xorg bug and add the upstream info there. Sorry for the noise! @Fritz: Your xorg.conf looks fine. After altering parameters check your Xorg.log after you restarted X, to look what exactly went wrong with the driver you selected xorg.conf. Just use the different drivers "modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw" with different bit depths and see what happens. If your monitor is capacle also always use the native resolution of your monitor. [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
"r128" is the appropriate driver for your card but obiously does not work properly on your hardware. It would be a good idea to let the upstream devs know that. xorg/driver/xf86-video-r128 is actively maintained and still receives patches (last one 8 days ago). You could file a bug against upstream: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=r128 Just be sure to have a complete Xorg.log ready to post this bug upstream and state that it happens on an Apple PowerMac 3,1. The "Invalid ROM contents"-line does not matter very much, it seems pretty standard on PPC-Apple. My Powerbooks are working fine also though this error shows up. In the meantime you could try to get one of the other drivers "modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw" to work with 24 bit depth. You can use my xorg.conf as starting point and edit it manually. Just put it in /etc/X11. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1541082 Title: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1541082/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Check your boot messages with "journalctl -k" and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log then you will get a hint what went wrong with r128. [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3,1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
Had a closer look at your Xorg.log: [25.862] (II) LoadModule: "r128" [25.863] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module r128 [25.863] (II) UnloadModule: "r128" [25.863] (II) Unloading r128 [25.896] (EE) Failed to load module "r128" (module does not exist, 0) [25.896] (II) LoadModule: "modesetting" xorg tries to load the appropriate driver for your ATI Rage, wich is "r128". Since this driver is not found, it uses the generic "modesetting" driver, which in turn resorts to a 15bpp framebuffer. Just found out that the needed xserver-xorg-video-r128 package is no longer installed by default in Yakkety. Maybe this is also the case in Xenial. So the easy solution for you would be to "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-r128" and reboot. Maybe you get an accelerated 24bpp desktop again without needing a supplementary xorg.conf! >Since the dev had gotten back to me to post the screen shot, and then, >nothing posted/commented back about it, I've come to the conclusion that it >is just the image file itself that is a low spec/low res image. Other >backgrounds, like the "cosmos" one that changes images, some of them are >perfect, and others have this low resolution issue. Nope it is the other way round. The background image is 24bpp but the display driver has to show it on an 15/16bpp screen - it needs to reduce the colours somehow which makes the image appear blotchy. Icons don't have that many gradients which leaves them looking crisp on 15/16bpp.

[Bug 1606089] [NEW] unable to boot after 'entire disk' install (16.10, ppc)
Public bug reported: Just did an entire disk install from todays (24.07.2016) Yakkety daily. Installation procedure went fine, but the automatically created /etc/yaboot.conf seems faulty. 1st stage-boot runs fine, the boot options are displayed correctly, pressing "L" leaves me at the 2nd stage boot prompt where you can choose between "Linux" and "old" boot options. But either of them does not work, throwing the error message: "/pci@f400/ata-6@d/@0:3,/boot/vmlinux: unknown or corrupt filesystem" To rule out other issues I did an openfirmware reset, wiped /dev/sda and tried a second time with a fresh mac partition table. But the problem stays the same, 16.10 is not bootable on my PowerBook 5,6. It did run 16.04 before. Partition layout is the standard created by "entire disk" install, /dev/sda4 is swap. /dev/sda2: LABEL="bootstrap" TYPE="hfs" PARTLABEL="untitled" /dev/sda3: UUID="b7bdb9a4-7316-4966-aa65-1d546b211204" TYPE="ext4" PARTLABEL="untitled" ## yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer boot="/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9808211A_3LF2VVGH-part2" device=/pci@f400/ata-6@d/@0 partition=3 root="UUID=b7bdb9a4-7316-4966-aa65-1d546b211204" timeout=50 install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot enablecdboot image=/boot/vmlinux label=Linux read-only initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="quiet splash" image=/boot/vmlinux.old label=old read-only initrd=/boot/initrd.img.old append="quiet splash" ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.10 Package: yaboot 1.3.16-4ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-31.50-powerpc-smp 4.4.13 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-31-powerpc-smp ppc ApportVersion: 2.20.2-0ubuntu1 Architecture: powerpc CasperVersion: 1.376 CurrentDesktop: MATE Date: Mon Jul 25 00:19:21 2016 LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu-MATE 16.10 "Yakkety Yak" - Alpha powerpc (20160724) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: yaboot UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: yaboot (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug powerpc yakkety -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1606089 Title: unable to boot after 'entire disk' install (16.10, ppc) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yaboot/+bug/1606089/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
