I don't really know what happened since I was having the same problems
with Azureus but, I just downloaded the latest version of Azureus and
installed it over the version that seems to be on the Ubuntu
repositories and it works just like it was intended to! For some reason,
it seems to be using my Java 5 RE and not Java 6 RE but I'm happy that
it's not showing me the start up screen and then hanging when it shows
me part of the Azureus display!
