It's OK; I know how it is sometimes.Stuff comes in faster than it can
be handled. Even so, seven years is pretty amazing.
More to the point, I haven't used Thunderbird recently, so I can't confirm
or deny the bug.

[Bug 992366] [NEW] /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper not executable by other

2012-04-30 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

After an upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, pulseaudio didn't work, and
the root cause turned out to be that /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-
launch-helper did not have o+x permissions. See this:

-rwsr-xr-- 1 root messagebus 292944 Feb 22 03:48 /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-
daemon-launch-helper

and then when I did
sudo chmod o+x /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
pulseaudio worked.

As an additional clue, when I started the pulse audio volume control, it
said that /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper failed, and then
when I tried running pulseaudio from the command line, it saud that
dbus-daemon-launch-helper didn't have permissions to execute.

This is either an installer problem or a dbus problem.

I suffer from this bug, too. In my case, it was probably caused by an editing

Re: [Bug 718427] Re: recoll slows system to a crawl

2011-12-09 Thread gpk
Manual adjustment isn't really a practical solution. It's nice to
know that
the problem seems to be triggered by individual large files, but in
order to
be really useful, recoll needs an algorithm that can handle that case.

Basically, I enabled logging and found the large file (About 5GB)
which caused recollindex to use so much memory.
After skipping the file, memory usage is reasonable now.

 Bug description:
   Binary package hint: recoll

I have a lot of files, and recoll slows the system to a crawl when
indexing. Opening up a terminal takes 8 seconds. Getting the
 file
menu on a web browser requires you to hold the button down for 4
seconds. Basically, it's hammeringmy disk. CPU usage is not high,
but the I/O is. This is a reasonably capable system: a 2-core
CoreDuo, 4 gig of memory, a 7200 RPM disk. It ought not be slow.

Recoll should make use of ionice to reduce the I/O probability.
 And,
if that's not enough, it ought to sleep in between operations that
 use
the disk. It should be really really easy to make it a good
 citizen

Basically, if it continues to annoy me while indexing, off it goes

[Bug 868828] [NEW] Which is left andwhich is right?

2011-10-05 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Often, when running the command-line unison, when manually controlling a
transfer, you forget which direction is which.

For instance, when there is a new file on both sides of a transfer, you
need to choose between the and the keys. That's fine for a
small transfer were you can still see the print out of which root is
left and which root is right. But my transfers are often large, and
the names of the two machines have long since scrolled off the top of
the terminal by the time unison asks me to make a decision.

Thus, I don't know whether to hit or because I don't know which
one is associated with which transfer direction.

One fix would be to print out the two root names at each human decision
point. That's overkill.A better option is to print the two roots
when you issue the x command to examine the files more closely.
That's frequently used when you are deciding which way to go, and it
would provide a timely reminder, without cluttering up the terminal too
much.

[Bug 855202] [NEW] What if the network goes down after a message is composed?

2011-09-20 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

The following scenario is rather annoying on a laptop with a dubious wifi
network:
1) compose a message.
2) hit the send button
3) SMTP works
4) network goes away
5) Copy to the SEND folder fails (assume it is on a remote machine)
At this point, you're stuck, because you cannot change the name of the server,
or change to local files. Also, it's effectively impossible to switch to
another wifi network because the Try again pop-up keeps popping up.

Odds are goo that you'll have to retype the message.
Worse, if it is sent, you'll probably lose the record that you sent it.

[Bug 846861] [NEW] 3G modem isn't noticed until unplgged and replugged

2011-09-11 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Basically, I boot my machine with an Alcatel 3G modem plugged in (via
USB port), and the system doesn't seem to realize it exists.
NetworkManager doesn't show it at all, and even in /var/log/syslog, I
only see 'ALCATEL MASS STORAGE' at 380 seconds.

N.B.: This modem has some USB disk for configuration along with the
modem itself.

[Bug 846868] [NEW] Alcatel 3G modem: Network Manager times out before connection

2011-09-11 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

I see the following characteristic sequence of stuff in /var/log/syslog.
In it, the modem starts up nicely, then at 09:02:16, pppd times out.

At that point, the modem is marked as invalid, and when I attempt to
reconnect at 09:02:34, it sees the invalid marking and doesn't even
give it a serious try.

So a time-out leads to an infinite sequence of failed attempts to
connect, because the system incorrectly thinks the modem is not valid.
The only solution seems to be to unplug the modem and re-plug it.

anything else, and also catches the generic case of any extra arguments.

[Bug 835901] [NEW] ssh-copy-id: fails to sanitize arguments

2011-08-28 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

When I run ssh-copy-id with the incorrect flag, I get this failure:

$ sudo bash
# ssh-copy-id -t /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub zzz...@koch.phon.ox.ac.uk
Pseudo-terminal will not be allocated because stdin is not a terminal.
ssh: Could not resolve hostname umask 077; test -d ~/.ssh || mkdir ~/.ssh ; cat
~/.ssh/authorized_keys: Name or service not known
#

The correct flag is -i, rather than -t.

Now, ssh-copy-id is a shell script, and the last line of the error
message is line 44 of the shell script. Apparently, $host is not set
and then the command line is passed to ssh as the address. It's a bit
of a mess.

ssh-copy-id should make some basic checks on its argument list.

Public bug reported:

When I run ssh-copy-id with the incorrect flag, I get this failure:

$ sudo bash

[Bug 812461] [NEW] thunar thumbnailing very inefficient under rm

2011-07-18 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

When I use thunar to open the image folders on a cell phone, and then I delete
or mv files away from the phone, this is what happens:
1) First, the thumbnail folder gets moved away / deleted.
2) Next, thunar attempts to create and re-fill the thumbnail folder as the
files are being deleted.
3) Amusingly, the thumbnailing process and the deletion process happen in the
same order, so if you watch carefully, you can see this:
3a) The upper left file starts out as a default icon.
3b) It is replaced with a thumbnail image
3c) It is deleted/moved away.
3d) A new file, with a default icon then fills the space.

On a slowish USB connection to a typical camera, you can see this
happening with the naked eye. Clearly, a lot of bandwidth is being
wasted writing and deleting thumbnail files on the camera. Remember,
thumbnails are stored on the device itself, so they eat USB bandwidth,
and they also trigger writes to the flash memory, and these writes can
be very slow.

If thunar runs the thumbnailing in a separate thread, and if ionice (or
the syscall equivalent) can operate on just the thumbnailing thread (and
not the rest of thunar), then setting the thumbnailing thread to the
Idle service class would probably do a fairly good job of solving the
problem. And it should nice itself, too.

Or, when thunar detects that the thumbnail folder is missing, the
thumbnailing thread could sleep several seconds before starting to re-
fill itself.

[Bug 768032] Re: gltext seems to leak memory eventually causing oom-killer to run

2011-07-08 Thread gpk
It crashes my computer in Natty. This is a serious bug, because it
causes all kinds of havoc. Loss of data, for one thing.

However, this is not just a bug in gltext: it is a bug in xscreensaver.
Xscreensaver should adjust the OOM killer to preferentially kill its
subprocesses. A screensaver subprocess is *NOT* an important process -- it
should not be allowed to run wild and endanger the operation of the rest of the
system.

A simple manipulation in /proc/[pid]/oom_adj would solve the problem.

open(/proc/%d/oom_adj, w).write(10\n)

would do the trick.

[Bug 807685] [NEW] xscreensaver does not protect the system against its children

2011-07-08 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Xscreensaver should set the oom killer to preferentially attack its children.
See, for example this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xscreensaver/+bug/768032
where a screensaver (gltext) leaks memory and eventually renders the system
inoperable. It's a real problem: it's just frozen several of my computers.

The thing is, a screensaver is *NOT* a critically important part of the
system. It should die early if it is a resource hog. All you have to
do is write 10 into /proc/PID/oom_adj and Bob's your uncle.Until
then, Xscreensaver is failing its duties.

[Bug 681183] Re: Thunderbird hangs and greys out for 10-20 seconds

2011-06-23 Thread gpk
I tracked my problem down to really, *really* bad behaviour of SQLite
databases on a btrfs file system. That, and updatedb for the locate
program was taking may hours to scan my disk. Conseqeuently, very
little of my disk was in RAM and performance was awful.

Between tweaking updatedb's conf file, changing btrfs compression from
gzip to lzo, and getting the 2.6.38 kernel with various btrfs fixes,
things have improved dramatically.

Also, I wrote the following script to defragment btrfs. This runs overnight
and seems to help:

#!/bin/bash
# This finds files with lots of fragments, then defragments them. Thunderbird
has sqlite databases
# that get *very* fragmented.

{
for tree in $(mount | awk '$2==on  $4==type  $5==btrfs {print $3;}')
do
  ionice -c3 find -L $tree -xdev -type f -size 320k -mtime -60 -execdir
filefrag {} +
done
} |
awk '{n=$(NF-2) + 0; if(n40) {i=match($0, : [0-9]+ extent.*found); print
substr($0, 1, i-1);}}' |
{
while read f
do
  btrfs filesystem defragment $f
done
}

[Bug 792929] [NEW] you cannot stop a program that makes lots of windows

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfwm4

Write a little program that produces hundreds of windows. Then try to
stop it: you'll find that you cannot. Your mouse and keyboard actions
get ignored.

Execute this with python. I use the python-matplotlib module to make
plots simply because that's where I first got burned, and that's an easy
way to make lots of windows:

sudo aptitude install python-matplotlib
python ENDEND
import pylab

for i in range(400):
pylab.figure(i+1)
pylab.plot([1,2])
pylab.show()

I should mention tha t I really have no good idea who is responsible for
this bug. It could be the X server instead of the window manager.
Possibly other packages instead.

[Bug 781132] Re: corrupted /var/lib/apt/lists

2011-06-03 Thread gpk
OK, so it's perhaps not a security problem, but it sure is a problem!

From anyone but an expert's point of view, if that happens, your Ubuntu
system appears to be broken. One cannot install new software or get
updates. Worrying error messages will appear.

Proper system behaviour would be to:
(a) detect malformed files before the old files are trashed.
(b) do not throw away the old files until the new ones are confirmed,
(c) Produce an intelligible error message, something on the order of
Your attempt to update Ubuntu failed because the updates are corrupted.
Please check your network connection, check the server, and try again.

[Bug 783066] [NEW] When exercising btrfs via nfs4, system hangs and claims no disk space

2011-05-15 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

I have an underlying btrfs filesystem which is mounted across 3 Ubuntu
machines via NFSv4. I was running an application that caches some
intermediate results on the disk; it produces about 5 files/sec
(combined total across the three machines), each file is about 100k.
The files are deleted randomly in groups of 30, and there is some
directory creation/deletion mixed in. So the filesystem is moderately
busy (but with some visible pauses).

After several hours of this, the application fails, claiming no space.
When I looked, shortly afterwards, though, there was still 25% free
space. Also, the system was very slow, because things were wedged and
timing out in the kernel. Dmesg had some interesting messages
(attached as dmesg.txt).

A reboot fixes the immediate problems. This has now happened twice in
a row, with a reboot in between.

FYI, the relevant system calls (the ones that happen in the active loop)
are stat(), statvfs(), open(), write(), close(), rmdir(), mkdir().

[Bug 765735] Re: mountall should cause fsck to show progress on text console

2011-05-02 Thread gpk
Also observed in Natty.Given that full fscks are rare (like, once
every 6 months), it is not the first thing you think about when your
machine seemingly hangs forever in the boot process.

I ended up booting the machine with a rescue CD and mounting the disks
by hand in order to find out what the heck was going on. That was an
hour wasted. I'd much rather have seen a progress bar or the little
twirly thing: -/|\-/|\-...

This is *also* a problem in the regular desktop ubuntu.

[Bug 775392] [NEW] fsck happens silently - this looks like the machine is frozen.

2011-05-02 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

When fsck happens on a large disk, it looks like the machine is frozen.
Well, not quite -- the little dots on the screen tell you it's trying to
do something, but when they keep going for 15 minutes, one begins to
believe that something serious has gone wrong. (After all, the normal
boot time is more like 15 seconds...) This has cause me to reboot the
darned box several times and eventually use a live CD so that I could
mount the disks by hand, one at a time.

If a naive user buys a terabyte disk and fills it with videos, his first
fsck (which happens about 6 months after installation) could cause him
to reinstall the entire O/S.

The *really* bad use case is when you use a Ubuntu laptop for a
presentation at a conference. You're standing in front of 300 people,
you turn your laptop on, and it starts booting, and you wait, and wait,
and three helpful people from the audience come up to try to fix it. It
gets rebooted 4 times. Meanwhile, you're trying to give your
presentation verbally, without the computer, while the audience is
distracted by all the computer repair attempts. It is a career-
wrecking disaster, and all the while it is saying Ubuntu on the
screen...

Day after tomorrow, I'm off to give a talk, using my Ubuntu laptop,
running Natty. I'll fsck the disks today...

Indeed, you are correct. Its says Xubuntu. Sorry for the
imprecision: it's only a 1-byte error. :)

On 02/05/11 20:47, Steve Langasek wrote:
You say that you get a screen that says 'Ubuntu' on it, but your bug
report says that you have the Xubuntu plymouth theme configured. This
appears to be a bug in the xubuntu plymouth theme; with the default
Ubuntu theme, the fsck messages appear as expected.

The plymouth script plugin unfortunately requires code duplication
between each theme. It looks like the xubuntu theme needs to be re-
 synced with the Ubuntu one.

[Bug 759561] [NEW] updatedb.mlocate should warn if it takes too long / time out

2011-04-13 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mlocate

In the course of doing some numerical computations, I've created several
tens of millions of small files. (If you're curious, they are a cache
of intermediate results; this computation runs for several weeks. And,
no, the cache couldn't be drastically smaller without impacting
performance.) During that time, I started wondering why the heck my
system 's performance was so poor: it would be running it's disk all the
time, but nothing that showed up on top was doing that much disk
activity.

Anyway, it turned out to be updatedb.mlocate grinding away, taking
nearly 24 hours to scan my disk. That's fine -- I fixed it by tweaking
the configuration file -- but it's hardly the first program you think of
checking when your system grinds to a halt. Nor does it really show up
as active on top because it uses very little CPU time.

Anyhow, life would be more pleasant if updatedb.mlocate recognized it
was well outside the bounds of normal operation and sent an e-mail, or
left a message in syslog. Something like mlocate.updatedb still
running after 2 hours: either you have a lot of files to index or
/etc/updatedb.conf may be misconfigured. One of the configuration
options would be the warning timeout interval.

Since mlocate isn't used intensively, and since it's run once per day,
the timeout shouldn't be set too high: I'd recommend 2 hours.

[Bug 759574] [NEW] mlocate.updatedb does not call ionice

2011-04-13 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

updatedb.mlocate can cause a lot of disk activity, and it is not a time-
critical process. Therefore, it should call nice and ionice so that
it does not steal cycles or disk activity from foreground processes.

Re: [Bug 704110] Re: Corrupt screen in lower right corner

2011-03-27 Thread gpk
There are some similarities, but the symptoms are not identical.
It always occurs (occurred?) in the bottom right corner, independent of
where you might have had flash running.
Possibly, it is triggered by the use of flash; I don't always see it.
To be honest, I haven't seen it in the last week or two.

[Bug 737452] [NEW] man 5 proc has obsolete info

2011-03-18 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Doc for /proc/pid/stat wchan refers to /etc/psdatabase, which seems to
be obsolete.

More modern information ( http://weichong78.blogspot.com/2006/10/wchan-
waiting-channel.html ) says that the symbol name is readable from
/proc/pid/wchan , which is indeed true (I checked it).So
/etc/psdatabase does not exist on my Ubuntu system nor is it necessary.
It looks like the information that used to be in /etc/psdatabase is now
in /proc/kallsyms.

The only way I can think of would be by taking some kind of memory image
via the kernel.
Unless you know a way, I think you'd best be happy with the strace output.

I should add that the .recoll directory is on a compressed btrfs file

recoll needs to be a better citizen and not hog the disk.

[Bug 718427] [NEW] recoll slows system to a crawl

2011-02-13 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: recoll

I have a lot of files, and recoll slows the system to a crawl when
indexing. Opening up a terminal takes 8 seconds. Getting the file
menu on a web browser requires you to hold the button down for 4
seconds. Basically, it's hammeringmy disk. CPU usage is not high, but
the I/O is. This is a reasonably capable system: a 2-core CoreDuo, 4
gig of memory, a 7200 RPM disk. It ought not be slow.

Recoll should make use of ionice to reduce the I/O probability. And,
if that's not enough, it ought to sleep in between operations that use
the disk. It should be really really easy to make it a good citizen
instead of a resource hog.

Basically, if it continues to annoy me while indexing, off it goes into
the bit bucket.

[Bug 718427] Re: recoll slows system to a crawl

2011-02-13 Thread gpk
I just experimented: running

ionice -c2 -n7 nice -19 recoll

does the trick beautifully. It means that the indexing is no longer
annoying.

Note: This is not an entirely satisfactory work-around. because it can make
the search user interface slow. The correct solution is for the recoll code
to call ionice and nice when it spawns off the indexing process.I'll
provide a patch, if anyone cares.

2011-01-11 Thread gpk
On Abiword 2.8.6, go to the Insert menu, and go down to the fifth
item, Text Box.
That gives you a biggish, open plus sign.Click somewhere in the
middle of a block of text.
That gives you a black square with little green handles.
Grab one of the handles and pull.

That's also exactly how I'd describe the idea of allowing all users to set
timezone without authentication on laptops. :-p

Well, then the easy answer is to do neither.

Anyway, it's not the place to discuss the choice of automated timezone
detection: go to the gnome-control-center list if you really to want to
 argue this.

No thanks. People love to add features. You can't stop someone who
has a pet idea that they haven't
thought through very carefully. They just produce self-justifying
reasons and don't listen.

Me, I'll just turn it off when it appears. Then in 5 years, either it
will become useful,
or the distros will cause it to default to off.

Re: [Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-04 Thread gpk
Actually, on consideration, I don't think that automatic detection of
the timezone
is a viable solution. It suffers from all kinds of potential problems
like
What does it do if it's connected to a VPN?. If I connect via VPN
to my
office in the UK when I'm in France, I'd get the incorrect time.

Or, if I'm in the airport and I'm not yet connected to a network in my
new location,
it will be silently giving me incorrect timezone information. It'll be
telling me
what time it is in the other country. That's acceptable if you know
you have to
set it manually, but people will depend on an automatic system, and miss
their
connecting flights.

The trouble this will cause is a classic computer problem: it will be a
system that is
smart enough to be right most of the time.Being mostly right, people
trust it
and depend on it, and then get surprised in those cases where it is wrong.

Besides, there is a laptop-detect package in Ubuntu:

 $ aptitude show laptop-detect
 Package: laptop-detect
 State: installed
 Automatically installed: no
 Version: 0.13.7ubuntu2
 Priority: optional
 Section: utils
 Maintainer: Ubuntu Core Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
 Uncompressed Size: 57.3k
 Depends: dmidecode ( 2.8-2)
Description: attempt to detect a laptop
laptop-detect attempts to determine whether it is being run on a
 laptop or a
desktop and appraises its caller of this.

So, it is certainly technically possible to tell if you're on a
laptop.Therefore gnome can make
decisions based on that fact.

OK.I agree it would not make sense as the desktop default.

We can't change PolicyKit permissions depending on whether the system is
a laptop or not. So we'd have to make the change for all systems, which
is not necessarily what people expect. And even laptops can be used e.g.
in kiosks or schools, where you don't want people to play with system
 settings.

I think the whole point will become obsolete anyway when GNOME 3
introduces automatic detection of location based on network. See
 http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/DateAndTime for a rough
mockup, which is partly implemented upstream.

People using VPNs are not the majority, and we can disable automated detection
of timezone if we're connected over a VPN. Plus, we can also use GPS devices
 when present.

OK. Kind of OK, anyway. But that means a traveller has to know
and remember the rule
about VPNs. If they don't, they will swear at you. You will get
people saying I know I
connected to the network, why didn't the damn thing set the clock properly?

And, doubtless, developers will respond RTFM. But RTFM is a
hopeless task these days!
My Ubuntu system has tens of thousands of pages of documentation. You
have to design a
system that will not mislead people in important ways, even if they have
had better things
to do than read the Gnome documentation.

If people are smart enough to change their timezone manually, they are smart
enough to understand their laptop still uses the previous timezone
because it has no way of finding out you've moved.

Wrong. It's a very different process in the two cases.

Manual case: you just have to remember did I set it or not?*You*
are the only actor.

Automatic-but-imperfect case: You have to understand how the automatic
time-zone setting logic works.
1) You have to know that it gets its time from looking up its IP address
in a table.
2) You have to keep track of whether the computer has connected to a
network.
2a) It may connect without your knowledge -- if you go somewhere you
have been before, it
may detect up a WiFi network where it has the password and
autoconnect.
2b) It may fail to connect somewhere you expect a connection.
Hardware could be down,
or overloaded, or the signal could be too weak, or a password
expired...
3) Even if it does connect, do you know that it has a global IP address
in the right country?
 3a) There's the VPN problem.
3b) There's the possibility that you have a IP address behind a
firewall. You may be getting
data, but it might not be able to deduce where it is.
3c) You may be getting your IP address from a cellullar base
station on the other side of the border.
4) The software is depending on a map from IP addresses to geographical
location.
4a) How accurate is that map?
4b) How rapidly is it updated if some big ISP moves a block of IP
addresses from one time zone
to another?

In principle, you need to run through that entire checklist each time
you've looked at the clock.
That's a different, and harder task from just remembering to set the clock.

Or, to be sure, you can open up the timzeone widget and check to see if
the computer's idea of the
time zone agrees with reality. But, if you're going to do *that*, you
might as well just set it.

Another argument is that from a human social point of view, blaming your
computer for having
the wrong timezone just doesn't work when you miss an appointment.
Whoever you
try to apologize to will just be thinking What an idiot! Everyone else
can keep track of
what time zone they're in.

Anyhow, it's one of these things that isn't a good idea to automate,
unless you can do it
really well.

So you'd suggest computers should always wait for users to do things manually,
just to avoid being smarter than them? The automated solution is better
than nothing. Anyway, discussing this here is pointless since it will be
implemented in GNOME and I'm not involved at all in this work.

No. I suggest that UNTIL THE AUTOMATED SYSTEM IS 99.999% CORRECT, it
is better to do it manually. The automated solution can be far worse
than nothing.

Just imagine! You fly into Paris for a job interview. You glance at
your laptop
and decide you have time for a espresso. You don't even think about
network
connectivity and clocks. You arrive an hour late for the interview
because the
darn time zone is wrong.

Are you going to be happy?

Essentially, the trade-off is a minor convenience 99.999% of the time,
versus a
modest (or major) disaster 0.001% of the time.

[Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-01 Thread gpk
Oh, that's silly!

It's a laptop, darn it!The other users will (almost certainly) be on
the console, and they'll be in the same time zone your are in. (Unless
they have *very* long arms.)

What you are proposing is not the normal use case for a laptop -- you
seem to be thinking that I carry my laptop around so that people can ssh
into it. That's quite rare.

[Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-01 Thread gpk
Sorry. Let me be a bit more formal.

I suggest that laptops are either:
1) single user
in which case changing the time zone won't hurt other users,
2) physically shared amongst several people
