More log available. The problem seems to occur when 'something else'
goes wrong, like some network error.

[Bug 1947970] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2021-10-21 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
Public bug reported:

I know I am using non-standard drivers right now, but that was only
after I first experienced the problem. I also already replaced the video
card TURKS->JUNIPER, but the problem is the same. Later mesa drivers
seem to make the problem worse, so I am planning to go back to the
original Ubuntu drivers. They too had the problem and made me try other
drivers. The problem seems to occur after 'some other error, like
network errors', so suspect to me is PCI bus stuff. More logs and info
available. I also reported the problem to the mesa team, but thought
Ubuntu might want to help, as I guess Caonical wants to offer a stable
Linux.

[Bug 1885246] Re: Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop

2020-07-03 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
I removed all the AMD driver stuff and went back to the default 18.04
kernel and the original X.Org drivers and that seems to have solved the
problem.

Still strange that the AMD drivers would be that buggy, although maybe
mixing all kinds of libraries, kernels, etc. may have worsened the
problem, looking back.

The AMD Open Source driver has the same problem, may even be worse. Also
sometimes when rebooting through ssh the computer is locking up, so I
have to hard reset it.

[Bug 1885246] [NEW] Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop

2020-06-25 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
Public bug reported:

For a long time sometimes my desktop freezes suddenly and it took me a
long time to find when. It turns out sometimes the desktop freezes when
I move a window fast from one desktop to another, normally I would move
it to the right.

OS is Ubuntu 18.04 and the issue occurs (as far as I remember) with the
Open Source drivers and the AMD drivers. When using some default
setting/driver the issue does not occur, but then screen updates are
very slow.

I am using an MSI H81M-P33 motherboard, processor i5-4460, AMD Radeon HD
7700 Series (according to AMD driver). Monitor is AOC 1920x1080.

I tried many things, like different kernal versions and different
drivers. The currently installed AMD drivers don't work with the 5.3
kernel. I did not recently use something like kernel 5.0, so I don't
know if the issue is solved in later kernels.

I found some similar reports, but they all or mostly seem to relate to
laptops. While writing this report my desktop crashed again and I was
not moving a window, but just resizing it from the top down.

I can access the system through ssh and just changed the drivers from
AMD pro to AMD open source. Not sure what the effect is. More details
available if needed.

I would appreciate this would be solved, as it is pretty annoying to
restart my computer several times a day and sometimes losing work.

Yeah, really annoying. Happens often to me and no clue when it happens,
but it happens like every fifteen minutes or so. I was just looking to
install another file manager and found this bug report. And I am a

I seem to have the same problem in 19.04. Also it seems to take longer,

[Bug 1764180] Re: System slows down to almost freeze

2018-04-17 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
I changed the scheduler to from 'cfq' to 'deadline' and I increased to
commit times. That seems to have solved the problem for me as today the
system did not slow down to almost freeze anymore with the same load.

To me it somehow still is a bug as I think an OS is not supposed to slow
down that much, no matter what, without clear indication what is going
on and without means to analyze or stop or reboot or whatever.

Re: [Bug 1764180] Re: System slows down to almost freeze

2018-04-16 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
Hi Theodore,

Thanks for your reply.

As far as I know the system is not swapping, at least not a lot, but as
indicated, very hard to figure out what is going on without being able
to use a terminal screen. I also set the swap space to another disk than
the disk that seems to be causing the issue.

And yes, I know it has (probably) nothing to do with e2fsprogs, but I
had to choose something when reporting the error (using command line
utility).

And to me no matter what it is, it is still kind of a bug. I think an OS
virtually freezing like this is not a stable OS.

I am trying to change the disk scheduler now to see if that changes
anything.

Please note I started using ionice and nice for the suspect processes.
That doesn't seem to make any difference.

Looking forward to more info about how I can figure out what is going
on,

Kind regards,

Guus

[Bug 1764180] [NEW] System slows down to almost freeze

2018-04-15 Thread Guus Ellenkamp
Public bug reported:

For quite a while sometimes my system slows down to almost freeze where
it becomes unusable. The problem seems to be related to heavy disk i/o,
but I have not been able to pinpoint the cause. The problem seems to
occur when I both use the bitcoin core application for Bitcoin Gold and
VirtualBox. I normally use VirtualBox to run two Windows 2008 servers.

It seems in the end the system sorts itself out and starts running
normal again, but it often causes to destroy the status of the Virtual
Machines, sometimes resulting in a Virtual Machine going into 'guru-
meditation' mode.

Normally my system is fast enough to run everything. I have 8 Gb memory,
5 hard disks and an Intel I5. I tried to spread the load over the hard
disks, but that doesn't seem to have any effect on the slowing down of
the system.

My feeling is that the problem is somehow related to some disk i/o
system independent of the individual disks. Mostly the problem is solved
by stopping the Bitcoin Core Gold program, but that is very hard to do,
as even a terminal window takes minutes or up to an hour or so to
respond. That also makes it very hard to identify the problem. I have
several monitoring programs installed, but can't use them when the
system is in this 'almost frozen' mode.

I am using Ubuntu 16.04.4. The problem is not to x.x.4 version of Ubuntu
16.04.

[Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2017-06-14 Thread guus
I think I had the same problem on zesty. It started occurring AFTER I
used nvidia-settings to switch to integrated intel graphics on a Dell
XPS-15 9560 (GTX1050) and completely uninstalled nvidia drivers to get
back to a working laptop.

Indeed it seems to happen while using chromium. My machine was nog
completely crashed though, I could still ssh into it. But restarting X
or even rebooting was impossible, I did need to force power off.

I installed the upstream kernel, to be precise: linux-
image-4.12.0-041200rc3-generic_4.12.0-041200rc3.201705282131_amd64.deb

For about a day now the laptop is very stable and VERY cool. No fan
noise and battery usage seems to be much better than ever before without
nvidia drivers.

Can't wait to get this kernel fully supported.

[Bug 1468742] [NEW] whois returns exit 1 for certain tlds

2015-06-25 Thread Guus Houtzager
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Really strange. The whois binary on precise shows the information it should for
.org domains, but the binary exits with exit 1. If I use the trusty whois
binary on the same server, it works just fine (exits with exit 0). Tried on
several Precise systems, but they all show the same behavior. I've observed it
doing this for these tlds:
.org
.bz

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Release:12.04

$ dpkg -l whois
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold

|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

Any idea what's going on? Thanks!

[Bug 1315978] Re: upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 moved grub to MBR

2014-05-04 Thread Guus Geluk
Addition maybe relevant:

After I got the upgraded partition to start, I noticed that Windows7 no
longer was in the Grub menu. So I launched the app "Grub customizer".
Saving Grub however did not correct this. I then noticed that according
to "Grub customizer" Grub was not in the MBR, so it saved it to the
partition. After choosing "install in MBR" the problem was solved.

So it seems that even though Grub was installed in MBR, Ubuntu itself
was not aware of that.

[Bug 1315978] [NEW] upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 moved grub to MBR

2014-05-04 Thread Guus Geluk
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 via the update manager. Before upgrade
Grub was in the Ubuntu partition and I booted Grub via the windows7
bootmenu (modified with EasyBCD). During the Upgrade grub was
automatically installed in MBR. After reboot it showed Grub, but
choosing Ubuntu, it did initialize a start (Screen changed) then
stopped. (Windows worked fine). I noticed however there was no disk
activity at all. So I suspected something wrong with the Ubuntu Grub
entry. I then installed 14.04 on another partition with the live.iso on
USB, Grub was renewed in the process, and then the upgraded partition
did start and all was well with the upgrade.

Expected behaviour: Keep Grub in the Partition or move it to the MBR
after asking. If allowed to move Grub to MBR, it should at least work.

[Bug 1291969] Re: No usb on resume from suspend

2014-04-18 Thread Guus Geluk
I have the same problem here after a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04. When
I suspend I can still wake up de computer with my USB mouse or keyboard,
but they no longer function correctly. For instance the mouse cursor
will still move but clicking no longer works. I can wake up with the
keyboard but then it stops working. USB memory stick also seems frozen.
Reconnecting devices does not help. My keyboard lights up briefly but
that is all. The mouse completely stops working after reconnect.

On another partition I first did an upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04. Suspend
works fine here. I did a fresh install on another partition bescause it
would not boot. After the new install the grub menu was updated and it
works fine now. But then I noticed the suspend problem on the fresh
install.

[Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks

2014-04-10 Thread Guus Geluk
Ubuntu 13.10, FF 28.0. Did some more testing. Problem indeed starts when
you press ALT en type something. Due to my huge bookmark collection hud-
service takes 1.3 GB and unity-panel-service 900MB (FF 800MB after
start) and for some reason it stalls FF eventhough CPU usage is only 3%.
After ending the services FF becomes responsive again.

2014-04-10 Thread Guus Geluk
Using 13.10. I have thousands of bookmarks in firefox 28.0. I disabled
the unity extensions in Firefox. Most of the times it works okay, and I
did not have the problem on earlier versions of Ubuntu. But lately Hud-
service and unity-panel-service reach gigabytes of ram, totally stalling
my computer. I do not understand what triggers it. It even happens if I
did not use the HUD. Unity Panel service now is more than 1 gig and I
cannot end the process anymore in system monitor.

In privacy settings I disbabled:
- use of file and app usage
- internet search results
- I excluded the firefox webbrowser

So why is it still collection browser information?

[Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start

2013-10-29 Thread Guus Bonnema
Hi Joseph,

I installed the image files and tested and it runs.

However, as before I could not install all: specifically the tools file gave a
problem.
Not sure if it matters for you or not, so
I copy the last part of the messages, so you can see it seems to be a
dependency error.

[Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start

2013-10-15 Thread Guus Bonnema
Not sure what went wrong. First I compiled the kernel, and I saw that
the name was the same as an existing kernel. It didnt work, same error.
However, to be sure I uninstalled all the handmade kernels using
synaptic and now I cannot compile the kernel.

Also, I am missing one deb if I compare with the other kernels: they all
had 3 files: 2 header files (one AMD64, one all) and one kernel image.

The error message I get is simply :

"
Errors were encountered while processing:
 linux-headers-3.8.13-03081304-generic
"

Do I need the 3rd header file?

I want to be sure it is indeed not working using this kernel, because as
4 works, it would be weird if this one doesn't (would mean this patch is
to blame I guess).

[Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start

2013-10-11 Thread Guus Bonnema
I installed the kernel, but it shows the same errors. Weird though, if
this is the only commit related to Areca Raid Controller.

What I notice is that the messages are mostly from "arcmsr2" like: "arcmsr2:
executing hw bus reset " and
"arcmsr: scsi bus reset eh returns with success" and also: "Areca Raid
Controller2: F/W v1.46 ...(etc)..."

Could the problem be a different patch / commit as the driver names
differ?

Right. Done that. Not sure how you got to these 2 kernels, but you are
absolutely right!
3.8.13.4 works: just booted, logged on and rebooted. No problem there.
3.8.13.5 had the same symptoms as the non-working kernels. i checked with the
recovery kernel and got largely the same output. It had the same problem.

So, what do we do now?

The kernel you proposed to install, I installed. It produces pretty much the
same behaviour. So I guess it is not solved upstream.
I cannot change the status to "kernel-bug-exists-upstream", it is not part of

Hopefully you can change the status properly.

[Bug 1237392] [NEW] kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start

2013-10-09 Thread Guus Bonnema
Public bug reported:

All kernel updates on ubuntu following kernel 3.8.0-27 result in an
empty screen with no indication of startup, no response to the keyboard.
I can only start up using kernel version 3.8.0-27-generic. All following
numbers (up to and including 3.8.0-31-generic) do not result in a
running system. Also, the display no message at all when starting up
(after grub).

I checked the logfiles with "grep -n "Linux version 3.8.0-" *" and found
only 27 to be logged, nothing for the other kernels. I am at a loss how
to continue.

I am running the most recent version of Ubuntu server.

Two days ago I reinstalled Ubuntu with essentially the same result. The
installation kernel version 3.8.0-19 works fine. The updated kernel
3.8.0-31 does not work.

The following is the situation:

When I let the machine start on itself I get no output at all.
When I manually tell ubuntu to start the most recent kernel, I get 2 lines:

"Loading Linux-3.8.0-31-generic ..." "Loading initial ramdisk ..."

that's it.

When I manually start the recovery kernel, I get a lot of
information. Finally it drops to a terminal and indicates it could not
load the LVM partition /dev/mapper/Server-Root. This is why I never see
any result in my message or dmesg on disk.

The problem seems to be with the Areca Raid controller. It does a reset
of the scsi bus eh until it finally gives up and drops to a terminal. A
while after the system goes berserk with messages of non responding scsi
bus.

As I cannot reach my harddisk, is there a way to find out what is wrong?
Why does everything work fine up to and including kernel 27 and starts
to malfunction after that? Did the Areca software change in some way?

P.S. When I start kernel version 3.8.0-19, everything works fine.

[Bug 1046840] Re: [UIFE][FFE] Install Amazon and Ubuntu One Music Store webapp items in the launcher by default

2012-09-20 Thread Guus
If Amazon gets included by default, wouldn't it make sense to use the
local Amazon?

Amazon has websites for Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy,
Japan, Spain, UK and the US.

So if for example a French user opens the Amazon webapp he/she will
expect to see the French version.

Just a thought.

[Bug 1053090] Re: tomcat7 cannot find server.xml in /usr/share/tomcat7/conf

2012-09-20 Thread Guus Bonnema
I think I found what was wrong. In stead of calling
/usr/share/tomcat6/shutdown.sh directly, one should call "service
tomcat6 restart" : that works fine.

Will close this bug. Maybe docs do need some adjustment as the default
tomcat server still points to executing the shutdown.sh directly.

P.S. Not sure how to close this bug: can someone do it for me, please?

[Bug 1049087] [NEW] gunit missing in antlr3

2012-09-11 Thread Guus Bonnema
Public bug reported:

Hi,

The antlr3.jar file from the website since version 3.1 contains gunit
functionality.
In the (K)ubuntu repository, antlr3 package has no jars containing gunit.

Gunit is a submodule of antlr3 provided to do junit-like testing on
antlr grammars.

Is it possible to include gunit in antlr3 ?

[Bug 1034065] [NEW] Additional Radio Channels

2012-08-07 Thread Guus
Public bug reported:

Hello Developers of this fantastic lens,
As of today it seems that you are using radio.at, radio.de, radio.fr and rad.io
.
While these have a huge support for online channels (7.000), I think I found a
website that supports even more radio channels.
I was wondering if you took the time to check out tunein.com before you started
creating the lens.
The amount of channels they support is significantly bigger : 70,000 stations
and two million on-demand programs .
I'm in no way related to them but I was just wondering if you considered them.
Thanks,
~Guus

[Bug 811441] Re: Unable to connect to the system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: Connection refused (oneiric)

2011-10-15 Thread Guus van Charante
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 858122 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/858122

After following the instructions from #24 I discover in directory
/run/lock another directory was created named "lock", in directory
/run/lock/lock/ again a sudirectory "lock". This is repeating for more
then 42 levels in dept. Using command "rmdir lock" in /run/lock delivers
the message "failed to remove 'lock' : Device or resource busy"

Any suggestions how to solve this?

[Bug 583450] [NEW] No mouse cursor after resuming from suspend

2010-05-20 Thread Guus Geluk
Public bug reported:

I disabled the pasword for resuming from suspend, this way:

Applications Menu, System Tools, Configuration Editor.
select apps, then gnome-power-manager.
Scroll down to lock_on_suspend and uncheck.

Now ununtu resumes without asking pasword, but the mouse cursor is
invisble though the mouse still operates normally. When I switch
CTRL+ALT+F1 and back with CTRL+ALT+F7 it is restored.

When I enable the password again, I works okay again

[Bug 569865] Re: gallery2 installation fails

2010-05-02 Thread Guus Houtzager
Hey Teun :)

Correct that this is an annoying issue, but it's not the actual problem. I'm
installing on Lucid, I assume you are too?
Some googling got me here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/95098
And sure enough once I changed

mysqli_options($this->_connectionID,$arr[0],$arr[1]);

to

mysqli_options($this->_connectionID,$arr[0],$arr[1][0]);

in /usr/share/php/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysqli.inc.php (line 98)

it went ok. I did restart the whole procedure after changing this line.

Now the question: in this a bug in Gallery2 or in libphp-adodb where
this file is from? And did I break other stuff with this modification??

Regards,

Guus

[Bug 359774] [NEW] incorrect directory for sql scripts in installer_config.py

2009-04-11 Thread Guus
Public bug reported:

in the skytools 2.1.6 package the following default configuration is
present:

The default directory pointed to in installer_config.py is:
/usr/share/skytools

If the skytools-modules package is installed the sql files are placed in:
/usr/share/postgresql/8.3/contrib/

As skytools has skytools-modules as dependency it would be nice to see this
path set to the correct value
Not changing this path creates errors when using skytools.

[Bug 292488] [NEW] During upgrade of 7.04 to 8.10 with adept-manager atop could not be installed

2008-11-01 Thread Guus Bonnema
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

During the installation phase of the upgrade, the upgrade-manager informed me
that installation of 'atop' did not succeed.
The error message shown (Dutch) was:

"subproces post-installation script gaf een foutwaarde 1 terug"

which means: "subprocess post-installation script return an error value
of 1".

Currently I do not know whether atop was installed partially or not
installed at all.

I am in the process of upgrading from the most recent version of 7.04 to
8.10.

P.S. I will leave it to you to close the question and the bug.

[Bug 78513] Current ACX driver will not let USR5410 card function properly.

2007-01-08 Thread Guus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Using Feisty (dist-upgraded January 8th, 2007), my US Robotics USR5410
card wouldn't work properly (while it worked fine in Ubuntu 6.10).

The card uses the ACX driver. Following instructions on
http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Distribution_list/Ubuntu (look for
the addition made January 4th, 2007) I was able to connect to my network
again.

The most eye-catching symptoms where that one of the LEDs on the card
was active and that there's a wlan0 reported by iwconfig, but wlan0 is
labelled 'no wireless extensions' by iwconfig.

I ended up downloading the driver tarball again, recompiling it and
using that. There was no need to download another firmware version - I
used the tiacx111c16 firmware that is provided in the 'default' folder
in /lib/firmware/`uname -r`/acx/default (symlink to ../1.2.1.34
directory).

Note that I'm not familiar with Linux kernel/driver/firmware development
at all. I'm hoping that these steps give a more knowledgeable person an
indication that enables him/her to fix the problem constructively.

Basically, what I did was this:

# cd /usr/src/
# wget http://lisas.de/~andi/acx100/acx-20070101.tar.bz2
# tar xjvf acx-20070101.tar.bz2
# cd acx-20070101
# make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
# lsmod | grep acx
# modprobe -r acx
# cp /lib/firmware/`uname -r`/acx/default/tiacx111c16 /lib/firmware/
# insmod ./acx.ko
