Michael, did you install the udev-extras... Does this package exist on 10.04 ? 
What part of the link fixed the problem.
Have the E182E, it does not show up as a modem

Is there any sort of work around for this?
Is it fixed, thus it is just me who know nothing

This is what I get:

mar...@myhost:~$ gconftool-2 -a /system/http_proxy
 use_http_proxy = true
 use_authentication = false
 host = 
 authentication_user = 
 ignore_hosts = [localhost,127.0.0.0/8,*.local]
 use_same_proxy = true
 authentication_password = 
 port = 8080


What should it look like?
