[Bug 1077616] Re: 10de:0ca3 (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed

2013-06-18 Thread itsjustarumour
So - I reported this bug over 7 months ago, and no sign at all of any
progress? And its only ranked as medium? Surely it should be at the
very minimum marked as high, or even critical.

This bug, causing hard reboots to be required mutilple times every
single day, creates a Ubuntu system that in the real world is unusable
for day-to-day work.

This bug was also reported on the NVidia Developer Forum 3 months ago
btw, and it hasn't even been looked at there either.

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/537302/both-screens-black-xorg-
at-100-cpu-overflow-errors-in-xorg-0-log-nvidia-driver-310-14-quadro-
fx/#3821607

The signs for a successful resolution/fix, it seems, are not good.

From my personal experience, NVidia proprietary support for Ubuntu is
still unacceptably poor for my graphics card, as it was for my graphics
card before that, and the one before that.

Nouveau? Even worse, as it was for my previous graphics card, and the
one before that. A totally unusable system, hard locking within around
40 seconds of desktop loading. All bugs reported elsewhere, some going
back almost 4 years, not a single one ever addressed or fixed.

After 8 years, and after countless hours, days and sometimes weeks of
trying to put something *back* into Ubuntu, its business and its
community, with a sense of huge sadness I've finally reached the point
where I feel any further effort I put in is effort wasted. I had great
hopes for Ubuntu, but I feel I can't live in self-denial any more.
Ubuntu, for me at least, has been a failed experiment - and I have now
lost all faith that that will ever change.

Ubuntu, it appears, is never going to provide me with a stable operating
system that meets my needs. Its quality and reliability are too
woefully inadequate compared to its propritary competitors (MS Windows,
OSX, Android). It doesn't matter what component is to blame for that,
the end-user experience is the same - unacceptably poor.

As such, I'm moving to one of Ubuntu's competitors, and its time for to
close my Launchpad account.

[Bug 1077616] Re: 10de:0ca3 (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed

2013-04-25 Thread itsjustarumour
Updated to 13.04 final today. After rebooting and logging in for the
first time, it took 12 minutes for this bug to occur, requiring a hard
reboot. Not good.

Heres the relevant bit of the xorg.conf file:

OK, managed to get the latest upstream NVidia driver installed on a
different machine. I can confirm this bug does still exist in latest
Raring 13.04 Beta (64 bit).

This bug, or something very similar, has still been happening with the
latest Ubuntu-supplied NVidia drivers, although only rarely (previously
it was several times per day). I'm currently testing with the newest
upstream release as requested by Christopher M Penalver in #26.

OK, sorry but I jumped the gun slightly there. Unfortunately I am *not*
testing the lastest upstream NVidia driver on 13.04 as suggested in #26,
as it won't install on my system (and yes, I have followed the README
instructions exactly from http://uk.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-
x86_64/310.40/README/installdriver.html). I'm not prepared to take any
more risks of knackering my system by manually hacking xorg.conf files
etc, as this is my ***production machine*** and I need it for getting
real work done!

[Bug 1077616] Re: 10de:0ca3 (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed

2013-02-09 Thread itsjustarumour
@Christopher M Penalver - hi, I've been trying out the latest daily
Raring 13.04 build with the Nouveau driver. As with all five previous
versions of Ubuntu I've had installed on this machine, it makes my
system rather unstable (using NVidia GT215/GT240 graphics card btw)
resulting in hard reboots being required within minutes of loading the
Desktop.

Whether this is related to the the bug using the NVidia binary blob I
can't say, as I'm not seeing much in the log files that means anything
to me. The end-user experience however is identical - the screen
locks up, keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, I (usually) can't
ctrl+alt+F5 etc, meaning I have to do a cold reboot via the on/off
button.

The only clues I can see right now are in the syslog file - I've
attached the latest example for this crash.

In this case, my machine was on for 19 minutes before the crash. I
believe things started to go wrong at 00:58:19, and then at 00:58:51 I
get:

Feb 10 00:58:51 COOLERMASTER kernel: [ 1506.331437] nouveau E[ DRM]
GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon

Unfortunately, I can't really offer any more than that at this stage...

@Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) - unfortunately due to current work
and studying pressures, and the fact this is my production/work machine,
I won't have time to do that. Can anyone else subscribed to this
thread, perhaps someone who has already downloaded and installed the
Raring Alpha, offer some help?

[Bug 1077616] Re: 10de:0ca3 (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed

2013-01-09 Thread itsjustarumour
@Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) - apologies for the delay in
replying. I can confirm that I'm still seeing this bug, and I've
experienced it with all three of the NVidia drivers that you refer to.
Unfortunately I can't say of its a problem or not with the Nouveau
driver, as Nouveau doesn't work well with my graphics card (GT240) -
with Nouveau my system usually freezes within a couple of minutes of
logging in due to a completely separate problem, so it may be that with
Nouveau there just isn't enough time for this bug to manifest itself...

Still a problem on 12.10 (64 bit) - all 4 CPU cores maxed out and hard
disk being totally thrashed for several minutes every time I boot up and

[Bug 1077616] [NEW] (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed

2012-11-11 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

(Bug reported as requested by Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) - see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1063156)

Random hard locks on fresh installs of Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit), requiring
hard reboot. Keyboard is unresponsive, and unable to Ctrl+Alt+F5 etc.
This happens with any Desktop environment (GNOME, Cinnamon, KDE). Using
NVidia GT240 with NVidia binary blob. This appears to be no pattern to
when this happens - can be using any application. Happens several times
per day.

Same here on Ubuntu 12.10 (64) with NVidia GT240 card with NVidia binary
blob. Same problem on any desktop - KDe, Cinnamon, GNOME Shell.

Heres the relevant bit of my Xorg.0.log.old (and yes it does simply end
abruptly with have b):

I'm seeing the same problem on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5749 Core I-3 4GB

# uname -r

Strangely, when I *do* have a wireless network connection, the system

connection.

[Bug 662077] Re: WxWidgets apps don't have menus

2012-09-04 Thread itsjustarumour
Having this issue on two Ubuntu machines, with 12.04 (32-bit) and 12.10
(32-bit). In my case, on both these machines the menu bar is missing
for:

Banshee
GIMP

I have tried uninstalling appmenu-gtk but no joy.

In the case of Banshee, Alt+M brings up the menus and I can then using
the cursor keys to select what I need. This doesn't work for GIMP
though.

[Bug 696706] Re: `unison -ui graphic' does not show password dialog

2011-05-08 Thread itsjustarumour
Well, as a mere human being Ubuntu user alas I didn't find c442105's
fix pretty easy and in fact couldn't get it to work - so I don't think
this is really an acceptable workaround for the majority of users.

Is there any news on fixing this bug? Unison provides critical
functionality for a lot of people, and the patch seems to have been
available for several months now...

[Bug 500417] Re: nautilus doesn't honor gnome theme

2010-05-03 Thread itsjustarumour
@Pedro - OK, perhaps this is a bug with gnome-settings-daemon, rather
than Nautilus. I didn't mean to appear rude, but I am not a developer,
so I'd don't know which it is (I'm just trying to be helpful, and to
report bugs and get issues fixed). If this is a bug in gnome-settings-
daemon, then I feel the bug should be passed on to somebody who deals
with gnome-settings-daemon, rather than just being marked as invalid.

@everybody - I'm still getting this bug on Lucid 10.04 final. It has
happened with my own icon and GTK2.0 themes, and also with the default
Lucid themes.

@Willjcroz - yup, thats exactly what happens to me...

@Ihotari - thanks for suggesting that workaround - I'll give it a try.

@Pedro - just one last thing - I think there is a duplicate bug of this
one - see bug 516384 - there is some discussion on that bug thread,
which is marked as being a Nautilus bug - that is why I was thinking
this bug should be marked as a Nautilus bug as well - perhaps both bugs
should be marked as a gnome-settings-bug - what do you (and the other

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-04-30 Thread itsjustarumour
I also miss this functionality, as in my day-to-day work, I am very
frequently copying file paths from Nautilus and pasting them into a
terminal.

This change just causes me aggravation, and has severely slowed down my
workflow. At times, I have now found myself using Dolphin because its
quicker and easier to use to perform the regular tasks I need to
perform.

If the change was considered necessary, then there should have been an
option in Nautilus Properties to switch the button back on if that is
what a user wants. Linux and FOSS is meant to be about choice and
freedom, after all.

Telling users to use Ctrl+L is not a valid response to this problem.
That is not a solution, it is a workaround for power users. No
regular users know about this shortcut. In fact, most experienced users
won't know about this shortcut. I certainly didn't.

Keyboard shortcuts are there to provide power users who can remember
shortcuts with a way to perform regular tasks quicker. They should
NEVER be a complete replacement for GUI-based functionality. This
breaks one of the biggest, most basic rules of GUI design.

[Bug 568555] [NEW] AWN 0.4.0 Missing functionality/regression - can't move to another workspace

2010-04-22 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: avant-window-navigator

Hi,

I'm using AWN 0.4.0 on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 RC1.

Some functionality appears to have been removed - or is not working - in
AWN 0.4.0 compared to the previous stable version.

When I right-click on the icon for an open application in the AWN
Taskbar, the option to Move to another workspace is not there.

This functionality exists in AWN 0.3.2, and is very useful.

I will attach two screenshots to illustrate...

[Bug 565874] [NEW] Hardware Sensors Applet 0.4.0 forgets settings after rebooting

2010-04-18 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm using AWN 0.4.0 on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 Beta2, on an Intel Q9650-based
quad-core system.

What happens:

After setting up the Hardware Sensors applet and rebooting my machine,
some of the changes to the settings are lost.

I enclose two screenshots - before and after rebooting - to show
what happens.

In the first screenshot, I have un-ticked CPU Temperature because I
don't want this to be displayed, and selected Core 0 to be chosen for
the Sensors displayed in icon.

Everything works fine, and the temperature for CPU 0 is shown on top
of the icon in the AWN taskbar.

In the second screenshot - after rebooting - CPU Temperature is ticked
again. Also, the Sensors displayed in icon defaults back to HDD
Temp (ST3402111AS) - and the HDD Temp is shown on top of the icon in
the AWN taskbar.

What should happen:

Hardware Sensors applet should remember the changes I have made.

Is this reproducible?

Yes - every time.

If you need any more info, please ask!

:-)

Unfortunately I have been unable to find a possible cause for the bug you
are experiencing on Karmic. However, I have been told by another bug triager
(more experienced than I am) that the fact that this problem seems to be
resolved in Lucid qualifies it for the Fix Released status. I'm sorry that
I have not been able to find a workaround for you. If you begin to
experience the bug again in Lucid at any point, then please feel free to let
us know so we can try to address it! Thanks again for reporting this bug,
and please continue to report any other bugs you experience.

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-panel

 What happens:

When I start my Karmic 9.10 machine and the desktop loads, gnome-panel fails
to start. I can start it by running gnome-panel in terminal. As a
workaround, I have to add gnome-panel to the list of Startup
 applications.

I have corresponded with several people on the Ubuntu forums who have had
this same problem, although it seems - surprisingly - that nobody has
reported this as a bug yet (apologies if I'm duplicating an
already-reporting bug here, but I had a search and couldn't find one).

I don't get this problem after a fresh install - only after I have installed
my normal set of programs from the Ubuntu repos and then added my own icon
and GTK 2.0 themes. However - I have got the same problem on every single
install of Karmic 9.10 that I have done (approx 10 installs, between 3
machines) - so it is reproducible every time.

Also, at approximately the same time that Karmic was released, Ubuntu
automatic updates broke gnome-panel on my Jaunty 9.04 install, producing
 exactly the same problem.

 What should happen:

gnome-panel should start when the desktop is loaded, without manual
 intervention from the user.

 Technical details:

Distro Version - Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, 32-bit, default fresh install with
 latest updates
 Desktop Environment - GNOME 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 2009-11-03)

[Bug 529794] [NEW] Lucid 10.04 Alpha3 network-manager 0.8 fails to connect on boot Huawei E172 3G USB modem ***regression***

2010-02-28 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Firstly, apologies but Apport on Lucid 10.04 Alpha3 won't let me report
a bug for network-manager as tells me that The problem cannot be
reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package. I've tried every way
to report this bug properly but to no avail.

What happens:
On boot, network-manager 0.8 fails to automatically start my network connection
using my Huawei E172 3G USB modem stick, leaving me with no Internet
connection. I have to physically unplug the stick and plug it in again, and
then network-manager starts the connection.
This was working perfectly through Alpha 1 and Alpha2, up to
network-manager/nm-applet v0.799. It only broke a couple of days ago when
network-manager/nm-applet was upgraded to v0.8 - so I consider this to be a
regression.

is this reproducible:
Yes, every time.

What should happen:
Network connection using Huawei E172 USB modem should auto-start on boot.

Please can you let me know what config and log files you need, so I can
attach them to this bug report. Many thanks.

[Bug 527231] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crashes on startup

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

What happens:

In approximately 1 in 3 reboots, gnome-settings-daemon fails to start.
This means that Ubuntu loads with the GNOME icon theme and the GNOME GTK
2.0 theme, rather than the default Ubuntu icon theme and GTK 2.0 theme.

I have been running a Lucid 10.04 test install, and updating it daily
(currently at Alpha 2). Everything has been working fine since 10.04
Alpha 1 was first released.

TI first saw this bug after the updates to Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 on 22nd
February 2010.

I have previously had exactly this same problem on all 3 of my Karmic 9.10
machines - see bug reports here for example:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/500417
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/516384

Is this reproducible:
No - its random - but it happens every day.

What should happen:
gnome-settings-daemon should not fail to start on system startup. Correct
Ubuntu icon theme and GTK 2.0 theme should load.

[Bug 527194] Re: Notification bubbles appear to left of screen

@Omer - thanks for taking a look at this bug report.

I checked and I don't have notification-daemon installed on my Karmic
machine. I enclose a screen shot of a list of what I do have installed.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - I've been scratching my head trying to work out the cause of
this bug.

Do you have an ideas about what might be corrupted, to cause this
problem? Is there a particular config file in ~/home that I can try
recreating to see if I can fix it? Or is there a particular
process/daemon that needs to start, to make the gnome-panel load? Or
anything else I can look at to perhaps get some clues? (feel free to go
all technical on me at this point, if it helps!)

When I first got this bug I did try numerous fixes on the Ubuntu forums,
but nothing worked...

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - OK, heres my xorg.conf There doesn't actually seem to be
very much in there...

This is for my main NVidia-based desktop machine btw (I can't give you
the xorg.conf from my Intel-based laptop as well, because yesterday's
Karmic updates hosed GRUB 1.97~beta4 and right now I can't mount my root
file system on that one!)

I've also attached a couple of screenshots from Synaptic in 9.10, just
so you can see what I've got installed in terms of Xrandr and
Xinerama...

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - Hmm, I had a look at the latest gnome-panel .deb package but
it needs 35 dependency packages installing as well and the too scary
light has come on, as this is now my only functioning Karmic system at
the moment and I need it for doing real work on so I'm a bit worried
about breakage...

apart from this bug still exists for me in Karmic 9.10 with latest
updates, and Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 is still working fine...

[Bug 500417] Re: nautilus doesn't honor gnome theme

2010-02-21 Thread itsjustarumour
OK, more bad news I'm afraid.

I have been running a Lucid 10.04 test install, and updating it daily
(currently at Alpha 2). Everything has been working fine since 10.04
Alpha 1 was first released.

Todays updates on Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 (21st February 2010) triggered
this same bug.

I hope this can help pin down what the problem is.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-18 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall  ubuntu-files
gives me the following list that I've added as an attachment - does this
give you what you need?

For info, since setting up these machines and getting this bug, I have
added some extra software packages from 3rd-party repos and PPAs -
including Lotus Symphony 3.0 Beta, and GIMP 2.7.1 (unstable). So if you
do some testing and try to set up a machine to reproduce this bug, there
is no need to install these packages as I know they are not the cause of
the problem.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen.  Hello again.

No joy with Jaunty 9.10 I'm afraid, I was hoping I might have time to do
a fresh install at the weekend and install all the packages again, but
unfortunately I didn't have time.

However, the good news is I haven't managed to reproduce the bug on my
Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 install. I have installed almost everything on
Lucid that I had on Jaunty, and gnome-panel always starts OK. The only
thing I haven't tested yet is google-desktop-linux.

@mikef187 and trev - I'm not sure if what you guys are seeing is the
same bug as me. With this bug, gnome-panel fails to start at all, and
so I have no panels at either the top or the bottom of the screen. With
what you are describing, the panels load but they are blank (no icons or
applets etc) - please could you confirm, or perhaps enclose a
screenshot? Many thanks.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - I've just finished my testing with Lucid 10.04 - I've
installed all the packages that I had on Karmic 9.10 - including google-
desktop-linux. I have done lots of experimenting, and tried very hard to
break Lucid - but so far I can't replicate this bug.

So - I consider my final verdict to be: This bug appears to be fixed in
Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2.

[Bug 500417] Re: nautilus doesn't honor gnome theme

2010-02-15 Thread itsjustarumour
I am getting this bug.

I am not using translucency caused by enabling RGBA support in GTK+. I
am simply using standard GTK 2.0 themes (I get this problem with any GTK
2.0 theme I try)

Running gnome-settings-daemon in terminal gives me:

^[[a...@coolermaster2:~$ gnome-settings-daemon
