[Bug 2067816] [NEW] Delayed audio start/stop after Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade, slow pipewire

2024-06-01 Thread J B
Public bug reported:

Anytime I either

* make any bell noise in my gnome terminal, or
* mute/unmute/change volume in gnome, or
* start, pause or continue a video on firefox

I get
1) the quiet but audible pop that you hear when audio is unmuted
2) **a ~5 second (!) delay**
3) the sound playing

When stopping the sound, the same happens in reverse order, with a
shorter delay.

I suspect that the audio system (pipewire) is opening and closing an
interface, and has perhaps some driver issues? How can I debug this
annoying delay?

journalctl shows during such an event:

I see pipewire-pulse running.

This is on a Dell XPS 15, and the problem occurs both with and without
using headphones.

I posted this issue at https://superuser.com/questions/1844051/delayed-
audio-start-stop-after-ubuntu-24-04-upgrade-slow-pipewire?noredirect=1
and 2 other users commented that they also experience this with their

In Windows, delete the entry in Windows Environment:
In Windows Settings, search for environment | Choose "Edit system environment
variables"
Select "Environment Variables" and under "System Variables," DELETE the
environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE
It doesn't matter whether the variable value is set to 0 or to 1 — the mere
presence of the variable appears to cause this problem, including if you try to
send an email from Thunderbird from any browser.

[Bug 2066347] [NEW] Thunderbird Snap cannot access profile outside home after 24.04 upgrade

2024-05-22 Thread J B
Public bug reported:

After upgrading yesterday to 24.04, thunderbird would not open. I got
the error "Thunderbird is already running, but not responding". In the
terminal, it looks like this:

$ thunderbird
Gtk-Message: 10:04:38.068: Not loading module "atk-bridge": The functionality
is provided by GTK natively. Please try to not load it.

thunderbird/url-classifier-skip-urls getLastModified() IndexedDB:   The
operation failed for reasons unrelated to the database itself and not covered
by any other error code.", "resource://services-settings/IDBHelpers.jsm", 18))

The cause of this is that in ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini I list a
profile path that is outside /home in a data directory that sees regular
back ups.

thunderbird is in snap now, and snaps are hardcoded
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/1033344/how-to-give-snaps-access-to-
somedir) to permit no data access beyond /home.

This is the reason it could not start any more.

A possible way forward is to make the data access of snaps configurable.

In the meanwhile, I uninstalled the snap-thunderbird and installed
deb-thunderbird following
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2024/03/install-thunderbird-deb-ubuntu-2404/

** Affects: thunderbird (Ubuntu)

[Bug 2065423] Re: Update AppArmor template to allow confined runc to kill containers

2024-05-21 Thread Christopher J. Ruwe
I am to some extend amazed considering so few users participate in this
discussion.

I'd expect every user of Kubernetes, using containerd and app_armor on
an Ubuntu 24.04 to be affected. To get my clusters in a sustainable
state, I deactivated app_armor for containerd as a stop-gap measure,
expecting the need for bumping containerd to be high and an updated
package to appear soon.

Am I in some respect wrong in my assumption? Is running K8S on 24.04
with app_armor-ed containerd an edge case?

Thanks for your consideration.

[Bug 2064007] Re: execve from NetworkManager fails - wrong path in app-armor profile?

2024-05-12 Thread Christopher J. Ruwe
Hi Seth,

sorry to reply that late, had been rather occupied @dayjob. Thanks for your
explanation. Th system I noticed the problem on is a box which I steadily bump
since 20.4, perhaps even since 19.10. I did not notice the change of the
default DHCP-client and do not have any particular fondness for the one over
the other, so I just changed the DHCP client.

I will not have the time required to implement and accompany a fix for
the ISC DHCP-client, regrettably.

In any case, thank you very much for your effort.

[Bug 2064115] Re: Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Looks like this is a case of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/apparmor/+bug/2046844

What does work as a workaround is to create a specifc apparmor profile
for guix, that is really unconfined and allows user namespaces:

Create a file /etc/apparmor.d/guix:

abi ,
include

profile guix /usr/bin/guix flags=(unconfined) {
  userns,

  # Site-specific additions and overrides. See local/README for details.
  include if exists
}

Then do:

/etc/init.d/apparmor reload
aa-enforce guix

[Bug 2064115] Re: Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Uninstalling `apparmor` and rebooting is the only thing i have found
that makes it work.

Selectively disabling the specific rulset with:

# aa-disable unprivileged_userns

Gives a new error:

$ guix environment -C
guix environment: warning: no packages specified; creating an empty environment
guix environment: error: clone: 2114060305: Permission denied

Same for temporarily turning off apparmor entirely.

[Bug 2064115] [NEW] Conflict between apparmor and guix on Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread W. J. van der Laan
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 24.04 i'm unable to use GNU guix as installed from the apt
repository.

Version:
Package: guix
Architecture: amd64
Version: 1.4.0-6build1

To reproduce:
- Install a fresh 23.10 host
- Upgrade to 24.04 with do-release-upgrade -d (but i’ve heard reports that this
also happens with clean 24.04 install), reboot
- `apt-install guix`
- Create an unprivileged user with adduser
- `guix environment -C` as the user gives:
```
$ guix environment -C
guix environment: warning: no packages specified; creating an empty environment
just reset and send me to the settings for the built-in monitor
I attached a video
[Bug 2062504] Re: Flickering problems on external monitor with HDMI after installing Ubuntu 23.10
2024-04-19 Thread J K
I just removed the oibaf packages with
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers -r
I also tried
sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
but it said no such drivers existed
I rebooted but I'm getting the same flickering problem
My only option now is to reinstall the OS?
[Bug 2062504] [NEW] Flickering problems on external monitor with HDMI after installing Ubuntu 23.10
2024-04-19 Thread J K
Public bug reported:
I just installed ubuntu 23.10 on my thinkpad L13. It works fine on my
laptop monitor. But when I connect an HDMI cable to my other monitor,
then the screen flickers on the laptop and nothing shows on the other
monitor
I know it can't be the problem with the other monitor as I bought it
brand new last week, and the cable works fine on this same laptop when I
run in windows, and it works fine on other laptops with windows/mac
I already installed the driver with `sudo apt install nvidia-driver-535
nvidia-dkms-535` and rebooted, but that didn't help. I then installed
driver 550 and I still have the flickering
This laptop uses an intel Alder Lake-UP3 GT2
I also tried editing `etc/default/grub` by adding 'nomodeset' or
'radeon.modeset=0' within the quotation marks in the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT but that didn't help either
can anyone help?
2024-04-09 Thread Peter J. Mello
In case anyone else happens to land here and similarly discover that
Ubuntu's backporting game is still atrocious, I wanted to leave a
signpost to the work of Launchpad user @linrunner, who backported these
patches to Focal and keeps said package available in the PPA for his TLP
project, available at:
[Bug 2059781] Re: [22.04.4] The computer freezes after standby mode.
2024-04-01 Thread J R
Hello,
Thank you for your answers.
Unfortunately, I don't know which package is experiencing the problem,
it happens even if no application is running. Is there a way I can
narrow down the problem ?
I ran "apport-collect 2059781", I got this message :
jr@jr-E16:~$ apport-collect 2059781
Waiting to hear from Launchpad about your decision...
Package linux-oem-6.5 not installed and no hook available, ignoring
Did it work ?
Thanks
[Bug 2059781] [NEW] [22.04.4] The computer freezes after standby mode.
2024-03-29 Thread J R
Public bug reported:
Hello,
I declared the problem here :
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2494851
I installed the latest 22.04.4 LTS version.
When I put my new Lenovo computer to sleep mode, it freezes (no Internet
anymore and/or programs refuse to launch, I'm logged out, ...).
Usually I have to shut down using the power button.
Expected result : I get a functional environment after wake-up
here is the hardware diagnostics, which seem fine :   https://linux-
hardware.org/?probe=0a59bd119b, nothing wrong at first sight.
Lenovo tells me everything's fine hardware-wise.
Thank you
[Bug 2055021] [NEW] False-positive error "/cow format specified as 'overlay' and no support found"
2024-02-26 Thread Daniel J Blueman
Public bug reported:
When booting a kernel with overlayfs build-in, ie not as a module, booting
incorrectly errors out with:
/cow format specified as 'overlay' and no support found
This turns out to be a false-positive since, in scripts/casper we have:
modprobe "${MP_QUIET}" -b overlay || panic "/cow format specified as
'overlay' and no support found"
This was added previously when there was an out-of-tree overlay
filesystem, now deprecated by the in-tree overlayfs.
The correct fix is to change the line to:
modprobe "${MP_QUIET}" -b overlay
If there is no overlayfs support, the later 'mount' command will fail.
Btw. this bug should also include the win64 implementation.
[Bug 1939612] Re: pdl package in focal omits PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface
2022-06-06 Thread Ed J
bionic's libpgplot-perl used libpgplot0, a partially-compatible
replacement for PGPLOT based on Giza, instead of pgplot5. Nothing has
changed since then. pdl should not bundle any pgplot or binaries, since
that is not how packaging systems work. If one wants to use PGPLOT with
pdl, then one should install libpgplot-perl.
[Bug 1867561] Re: regression: twm won't launch in focal
2022-04-29 Thread J G Miller
At one time in Bourne shell and derivatives
LANG=C twm &
may have worked but because of all the other LC variables which are now
setup and which are not overriden by setting LANG=C, the work around for
the bug in twm being unable to open the fixed font for UTF-8 and other
encodings is to specify
LC_ALL=C twm &
You may even find that
LC_ALL=en twm &
where "en" is "English" also works (along with other two letter language
variants) but anything more specific cauting UTF-8 enocding to be
invoked such as en_GB or en_US will give the same error as "unable to
open fontset fixed".
[Bug 1969986] [NEW] AMDGPU driver confused by two AMD GPUs
2022-04-22 Thread J-B Vosteen
Public bug reported:
When I start a game (Surviving Mars) via Steam the framerates are
abysmal, somewhere between 10 to 20 fps. On 17.4.22 it still hit 60 fps.
When my screen is attached to the 6600 XT card and the game is running,
the following can be seen:
jan-bart@barts-tuxbox:/sys$ cat
./devices/pci:00/:00:01.1/:10:00.0/:11:00.0/:12:00.0/pp_dpm_sclk
1: 700Mhz *
2: 2900Mhz
jan-bart@barts-tuxbox:/sys$ cat
./devices/pci:00/:00:08.1/:30:00.0/pp_dpm_sclk
0: 200Mhz
1: 700Mhz
2: 2000Mhz *
jan-bart@barts-tuxbox:/sys$ lspci | grep VGA
12:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi
30:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
For some reason the clock of the unused graphics device is increased.
[Bug 1707695] Re: radeon 0000:03:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 10000msec
2022-04-21 Thread j spam
This is still an on going problem.
It was working fine on Mint 18.3, then I upgraded(downgraded?) to Mint 20.3
I have been having lockups, freezes, ssh in for a while before it locks up,
etc..
Very similar to above mentions of problems.
Here is the basic error that happens:
[37664.592883] radeon :01:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 14948msec
[37664.592889] radeon :01:00.0: GPU lockup (current fence id
0x003b1a11 last fence id 0x003b1a26 on ring 0)
Here is the system info:
System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-109-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.4.0 Desktop:
Cinnamon 5.2.7 wm: muffin
[Bug 1907878] Re: wrong var declaration in if-up.d/resolved (nm-dispatcher[54417]: /etc/network/if-up.d/resolved: 12: mystatedir: not found)
2022-03-25 Thread Wladimir J. van der Laan
FWIW this is still a problem as of Ubuntu 22.04. I'm aware that using
/etc/network is deprecated in favor of netplan, I guess that's why the
script can stay in a broken state for so long. I'll be looking at
porting my configuration to that.
[Bug 1965804] [NEW] Dropbox keeps downloading the same upgrade over and over again on Ubuntu 20.04.04: dropbox-upgrade-144.4.4491.tar.gz
2022-03-21 Thread J-K
Public bug reported:
I use Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS and following version of nautilus-dropbox:
2019.02.14-1ubuntu1
Problem: The dropbox syncing daemon keeps downloading the same upgrade
over and over again: In this case dropbox-upgrade-144.4.4491.tar.gz.
There are already several copies in folder
$HOME/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache/tmp_dirs/ .
I have a slow internet connection and it's very annoying that dropbox is
blocking it more than needed. I also don't understand why dropbox won't
continue to download a partially-downloaded upgrade file (e.g. caused by
a timeout or a suspend of the computer) but instead starting over again.
I've seen several download attempts in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS already but now
it loaded it 10x without success.
I expect that the upgrade file is downloaded only once and that an
already partially-downloaded file is continued instead starting to
download from byte 1 again.
[Bug 1960947] Re: Graphical issues for GtKGL in software rendering
2022-02-16 Thread J-P Nurmi
I can confirm that libgtk-3-0 3.24.20-0ubuntu1.1 from focal-proposed
fixes the rendering issue.
I have tested with:
1) the attached minimal test case:
gcc -o testcase testcase.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtk+-3.0`
./testcase
2) a full-blown flutter app:
snap install --classic flutter
flutter config --enable-linux-desktop
flutter create test_app
cd test_app
flutter run
[Bug 1960947] Re: Graphical issues for GtKGL in software rendering
2022-02-16 Thread J-P Nurmi
Hi all. The conditions for reproducing the issue: CSD + OpenGL + swrast.
Notice that the GTK GL example doesn't use CSD i.e. it doesn't set a
custom GtkWindow titlebar. I have attached a small test case that
reproduces the issue.
[Bug 1887703] Re: [Regression] 5.4 is not identifying all ports on Intel x710-TM4 10GbE controller
2022-02-09 Thread J
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1893956 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1893956
This appears to still be an issue on the latest 5.4.0-99-generic kernel.
I'm using a 2 port 10GSFP+ card. The PCI driver isn't bound according to
lspci, and the interfaces don't show up in dmesg or "ip link".
# lspci -nnk
31:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection X722
[8086:37cc] (rev 09)
DeviceName: 10Gb Ethernet1
Subsystem: Lenovo Ethernet Connection X722 [17aa:4021]
...
version:2.8.20-k
description:Intel(R) Ethernet Connection XL710 Network Driver
...
vermagic:   5.4.0-99-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
Strangely the ports don't even come up with the latest 5.13.0-28 kernel.
# modinfo i40e
(no version)
vermagic:   5.13.0-28-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
The card works perfectly in another distribution with the i40e driver,
but that's running a 4.18 kernel.
[Bug 1951733] Re: My screen freezes during a USB live session and I can't install Ubuntu
2022-01-20 Thread J R
Hello,
Might be related to Ubuntu anyway :
- the company where I bough the computer (Windows specialist) said they tested
successfully the RAM with W10
- the other company that found the problem came form the memory (Linux
specialists) said they stopped using Corsair RAMs due to some "past problems"
(I don't have more details). They put a Crucial RAM and now the problem is
solved.
But this problem will probably be next to impossible to reproduce.
Thanks for your time anyway
[Bug 1958248] [NEW] Screen garbled on login and freezes on unsuspend
2022-01-18 Thread Vic J
Public bug reported:
1. The login manager works but as soon as I log in, the screen is filled
with colored vertical stripes and is unusable.  I found that if I change
the screen resolution to the maximum (1920x1080), then the screen is ok.
Any other resolution that I've tried (eg (1440x900 used to be my
preference) causes the unreadable display and it does not revert back,
requiring a reboot.
2. Coming out of suspend, the password entry screen is displayed, but
there is no response to keyboard or mouse, requiring a reboot.
And again
sudo apt autoremove --purge -y
Seems to have deleted a couple files.
Well I installed it in the common way I'd say : USB drive, erase all
disk and install encrypted version with LUKS. I connected to a wifi
network during the installation.
Then I ran the following commands to reinstall the packages I had on my
previous computer (attached file) :
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dselect
sudo dselect update
sudo dpkg --set-selections < liste-des-paquets
sudo apt-get -u dselect-upgrade
(I've been doing this a couple times from previous systems, starting in 20.04,
now I'm in 20.04.3).
Do you see what happened ?
Thanks
[Bug 1956398] Re: [Ruby Pass] Ubuntu with AST2600 mini DP Display doesn't work (OS Mode)
2022-01-12 Thread Jason J
@jeff
  The current ASPEED AST2600 driver fails to install on Ubuntu 21.10.
With Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the display is blank until the driver is
installed.
Can you try this with the latest daily image for 22.04 (as the target is
22.04)?:
[Jan/11] We still face same issue. Installed the image (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy
Jellyfish) Daily Build: https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/) Screen
can’t display during installation & enter to OS.
These 2 methods (install driver to 20.04 LTS and patch) are short term
method to continue our EVT testing without problem. Can we have
Canonical team build an 20.04 OS image to include AST 2600 Driver?
Long term, we'd expect that AST2600 driver will be part of 22.04 LTS
image.
Thanks
-Jason
[Bug 1788060] Re: du program crashes on /var/lib
2022-01-04 Thread Robert J
Adding on to this to say we're experiencing this issue on all Ubuntu
18.04 systems and we're also running xfs for a filesystem. It seems to
be related to /var/lib/lxcfs on all of those systems. When we exclude
/var/lib/lxcfs from du, it completes without core dumping.
root@system:/var# du --exclude 'lib/lxcfs/*' -h -d 1 .
3.1G./log
14M ./backups
3.0G./cache
480K./crash
444M./lib
0   ./local
4.0K./mail
0   ./opt
1.3M./spool
4.0K./tmp
12K ./www
6.5G.
root@system:/var# du -h --max-depth=1 .
873M./log
14M ./backups
178M./cache
Aborted (core dumped)
[Bug 1951733] Re: My screen freezes during a USB live session and I can't install Ubuntu
2021-12-23 Thread J R
Hello,
The problem is finally solved by a change of RAM!
Apparently Corsair RAM (I had 2x 8GB DDR4) sometimes causes problems with Linux
(when everything works fine with Windows).
It was changed by a company specialized in Linux which uses Crucial or Kingston.
I agree with you.
Nowadays, if I close and open Shotwell again, the comment appear normally under
the photo and in the extended informations panel. But they become "binary
Well, it actually works, but by default the event description is folded in (I
just see the title), and I must click on the small arrow to unfold it.
This is not convenient at all since, when an invitation is sent, the receiver
most likely wants to see the description.
[Bug 1953234] [NEW] Unable to detect cache hierarchy for CPU 0
2021-12-04 Thread J
Public bug reported:
I'm getting a slight boot lag and an error comes up indicating "Unable
The system-
Raspberry Pi 4B 4Gig - Latest Firmware
Ubuntu 20.04 Server with Xfce - Updated
Raspberry Pi OS is having the same issue - for reference:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/Raspberry-Pi-OS-64bit/issues/195
This may be related to missing cache directory in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0
(per the reference)
I'm requesting assistance to have the cache be detected.
Please let me know what additional info to provide (or if this request
belongs elsewhere) - Thank you
[Bug 1952131] Re: Extra output from host command causes issue with ssh
2021-11-25 Thread Dr Philip J Naylor
Further investigation indicates that this looks to be something weird about the
WSL2 resolver implementation.
Replacing the out of the box /etc/resolv.conf (which uses the host computer as
a name server) with one
using an external name server (e.g. 8.8.8.8) restores the expected behaviour.
I guess I'll need to raise this with Microsoft instead.
[Bug 1952131] [NEW] Extra output from host command causes issue with ssh
2021-11-24 Thread Dr Philip J Naylor
Public bug reported:
Coincident with the host command now outputing the names and IP addresses of
the DNS servers, as well
as the host information requested, ssh seems to be getting the same
(multi-line) response which it then
treats as a round-robin response.  As a result, if the host is down, the ssh
connection is redirected
to the first DNS server in the list, resulting in a "possible DNS spoofing"
error.
This is with the packages:
bind9-dnsutils   1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9 amd64  Clients provided with BIND 9
bind9-host   1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9 amd64  DNS Lookup Utility
bind9-libs:amd64 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9 amd64  Shared Libraries used by BIND 9
openssh-client   1:8.2p1-4ubuntu0.3  amd64  secure shell (SSH) client, for
secure access to remote machines
On:
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Release:20.04
Expected result:
"connection timed out" error.
Actual result:
"possible DNS spoofing" error.
ProblemType: Bug
[Bug 1951733] [NEW] My screen freezes during a USB live session and I can't install Ubuntu
2021-11-21 Thread J R
Public bug reported:
My computer was working fine with Ubuntu 20.04 and all of the sudden it
started to freeze all the time, including on the purple log in page.
The computer hardware has been extensively tested (the SSD and
motherboard have been changes by the manufacturer) but I still can't
even launch a USB live session : it freezes after ~30s : I tried with
18.04.6, 20.04, 20.04.3, 21.04, 21.10, 22.04 and Mint 20.2 "Uma" -
Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit).
But it worked with 18.04 (but I lost wifi and bluetooth) and also in
safe graphics/compatibility mode with all the previous versions.
I declared this problems in several forums with my specs and no solution so far.
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2467035=40cc8a4ea7d149b61e1e8b16a69d5c9b
https://www.linux.org/threads/my-computer-freezes-when-i-use-a-usb-drive-boot-and-i-cant-reinstall-ubuntu.37745/
The computer should be compatible with Linux : it's a custom Clevo
NL51LU made by PC specialists.
Thanks
